An end is often a new beginning and that certainly applies to the heartwarming Korean melodrama Thirty-Nine, which ended its 12-episode run with the expected death of a main character on March 31, the same day that series lead Son Ye-jin tied the knot with Hyun Bin off the screen.

While Son’s new beginning is a very happy one, the one experienced by her character Cha Mi-jo is one that’s forced on her against her wishes – a life without her best friend, Jeong Chan-young (Jeon Mi-do).

At first Thirty-Nine placed a lot of focus on the challenges of dating for working female professionals, but while Mi-jo, Chan-young and Jang Joo-hee (Kim Ji-hyun) all pair off with men pretty quickly, the importance of these relationships fades over time.

In the end, the show is about the friendship between these women, what it means to them in the moment, and how to keep on without it when it’s cruelly snatched away.

Most of the show’s dramatic weight is carried by Chan-young’s pancreatic cancer diagnosis and the finite road it sends her on, but there were some other major moments in the show. The tensest of those arose from Chan-young’s complicated romantic entanglement with Kim Jin-seok (Lee Mu-saeng), her lifelong love, who is married to Kang Sun-joo (Song Min-ji).

Jin-seok finally asks for a divorce to escape from his loveless marriage, but Sun-joo, acutely aware of the history between Chan-young and her husband, is in no mood to grant it.

Sun-joo kicks up a fuss time and again and on one particularly inopportune day, she knocks on Chan-young’s door; the problem is, Chan-young’s friends and parents are inside. Mi-jo whisks her away to the parking lot and drops to her knees, begging Sun-joo to walk away just this once. She does, but it’s a temporary reprieve.

Sun-joo’s next move is to visit Chan-young’s parents, where she spills the beans. Furious, Chan-young’s parents call her and her friends down to reprimand them for this shameful carry-on, a moment foreshadowed at the beginning of the series when a jilted wife and her two friends mistakenly accused Mi-jo of adultery after barging into her clinic.

Rather than let her friends be berated by her mother, Chan-young chooses this moment to reveal to her parents that she is terminally ill. Suddenly, a bad day for them has gotten unimaginably worse.

Another big reveal concerns Mi-jo’s biological mother, who is in jail for fraud. Mi-jo plucks up the courage to visit her, but it’s not the reunion she might have hoped for, and before long, one of her mother’s shady creditors darkens her clinic’s doorsteps.

Mi-jo promptly cuts her biological mother out of her life, sparing herself any future trouble. While the danger evaporates a little too conveniently, the brief episode nonetheless brings an important point home for Mi-jo: her true parents are the people who have raised and cared for her all these years, genes be damned. Home, after all, is where the heart is.

Other dramatic counterpoints are less successful. Juxtaposed with Mi-jo’s fortunate experience as an orphan who was embraced by her new family is the half-baked tale of Kim So-won (played by former Wonder Girls member Ahn So-hee). So-won is the adopted sister of Mi-jo’s sweet new squeeze Seon-u (Yeon Woo-jin) and they both spent time at the same orphanage.

So-won’s relationship with her adoptive father, who worries about his bloodline and inheritance and would rather disown her, has the makings of a phoenix-rising-from-the-ashes story. But her journey from a seedy karaoke bar back to her beloved piano stool is thinly sketched; as a result it lacks emotional resonance.

Joo-hee also gets a tough run during the series. She is very much the third wheel in the friendship and seems to have the most forlorn existence.

She lives with her mother, where she guzzles beer alone most evenings, and has been working for a decade as a cosmetic sales girl in a department store, a stark contrast with her friend’s more impressive professions (though she does eventually quit and strike out on her own).

Her suitor, a younger restaurateur in the neighbourhood, is the least well defined of the romantic leads, and when all the men fade into the background as Chan-young’s condition nears its crisis point, in many ways so does Joo-hee.

Even Chan-young doesn’t seem too concerned about Joo-hee, as she worries more about how Mi-jo will react to her impending death.

Thirty-Nine winds to an emotional close, which is brought home by the emotional performances, particularly Son’s, who vividly captures Mi-jo’s fear and sorrow.

Yet the show’s best moments were without a doubt those that captured the special friendship shared by these three women. They laughed and cried together but they also got up to wonderful mischief ahead of repeated trips to the police station. Bad girls often make for good TV.

Jeon Mi-do met actors of the same age, Son Ye-jin and Kim Ji-hyun, in 'Thirty, Nine' and built a 'real friendship'. He said, "Since we are women, our common interests were different from others. In the past, there were times when I listened to men talking, and there were times when I watched them play like elementary school students and wore clothes alone, but since they are women, we often talked in detail. In a way, it's natural, tough, and easy-going when you're with women. In the meantime, I've come to live differently. I think it's a bit more of a natural look."

Actress Jeon Mi-do expressed her feelings about attending the wedding of Son Ye-jin who she worked with in the drama “Thirty, Nine”.

Jeon Mi-do, who wrapped up the JTBC drama “Thirty, Nine” on the 31st of last month, met with reporters at the “Actor & Learning Art Center” in Nonhyeon-dong, Seocho-gu, Seoul on April 4th to deliver her thoughts on the end of the drama and various stories surrounding it.

On the same day, Jeon Mi-do talked about Son Ye-jin‘s wedding which overlapped with the airing time of the last episode of “Thirty, Nine“, “We didn’t have that intention, but the date turned out to be like that. Maybe it coincidentally matched because we had postponed a week due to the presidential election or the Olympics,” she said.

“At Son Ye-jin’s wedding, we talked about how we couldn’t watch the 11th episode because she was busy preparing for the wedding and how we should watch it all at once. The date also fit perfectly. It’s like a perfect ending for both. We couldn’t talk for a long time because she was too busy,” Jeon said about the last broadcast.

“I went into the bride’s waiting room and Joo-hee (Kim Ji-hyun) and I both cried. It felt like sending a friend who has been my friend since high school to her husband’s house. Strangely, seeing her in a wedding dress made me cry. I think I wanted to see Mi-jo (Son Ye-jin) getting married in the drama. I think that’s why. Seeing us like that, Ye-jin burst into laughter, saying, ‘Why are you crying?’”

It is said that as all three of them are actually the same age, they were able to get closer after working together. Jeon Mi-do said of her collaboration with Son Ye-jin and Kim Ji-hyun, “We’re the same age, so we actually did it very comfortably. Each character has a similar aspect to our real characteristics. Yejin is straightforward and has leadership like Mi-jo, and Ji-hyun is considerate of the people around her. I had a lot of similarities with my character like how I say everything I want. I think I spent my time filming as if I were talking and playing as my character. Ye-jin is very playful. We laughed a lot while playing around on the set,” she said.

“It was a short time, but we got close. As the pandemic intensified, we didn’t meet much in private. During my previous work “Hospital Playlist”, I got close to the cast because I had so much time to meet them other than filming, like the band practices. But we couldn’t do that during ‘Thirty, Nine’, however, I think we got close quickly and got a lot closer despite the lack of time,” she said.

In addition, when asked whether there was a sense of competition in the trio’s acting process, Jeon Mi-do said, “I don’t know about others, but I don’t think there was any competitive feeling at all. We were grateful for Ye-jin’s help. I couldn’t find the camera because Ji-hyun and I didn’t have much experience in acting before the camera. Ye-jin always stood by our side and showed us how to do it. I’m sorry and thankful for her, and I’ve learned a lot. I think it’s just our synergy. That alone shows how good our combination was,” she said with satisfaction.

“There was nothing uncomfortable during our acting process. Ji-hye and I have been friends for nearly 10 years. We acted together a long time ago and even though we hadn’t been able to do it for a while, we did it together this time, and as expected, she is a good actress. It goes without saying that Ye-jin is good as well. I had a good time among good actresses,” she added.

Meanwhile, “Thirty, Nine” is a real-life human romance drama about the friendship, love, and life of three friends who are just around the corner of turning 40. The 12th episode, which aired on the 31st of last month, achieved its highest viewer rating of 8.1% (based on Nielsen Korea’s paid households) and achieved a successful ending. Jeon Mi-do, who worked with Son Ye-jin and Kim Ji-hyun as a trio close friends, played the role of Jung Chan-young, a character who spends her last time in life with her friends ahead of her death.

SEOUL, Apr. 6 (Yonhap) -- "I think it easier to play the doctor than the patient.”   S. Korean actress Jeon Mi-do (40) expressed her feelings about playing a patient instead of a doctor in JTBC's Wednesday and Thursday drama “Thirty-Nine” during an interview in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, on Apr. 5.

Jeon, who played the role of doctor Chae Song-hwa in the drama “Hospital Playlist,” transformed into Jung Chan-young, who was diagnosed with terminal illness on the brick of turning 40.  In the drama, Chan-young is a character with an easy-going and outspoken personality, and touched the heart of the viewers by taking care of others rather than being in sorrow even when she had less than six months left in her life. 

"There were many times when I had to hold back emotions. It was hard to control my feelings because I was worried that Chan-young would collapse. There are moments when I wanted to be greedy in terms of acting but looking back, I wonder if some scenes were expressed too peacefully."



Jeon confessed, "As I have appeared in dramas that deal with life and death, such as ‘Hospital Playlist’ and ‘Thirty-Nine,’ my thoughts about the surrounding people and the time I spend with them have changed a lot.  However, she carefully mentioned in terms of the relationship between Chan-young and Jin-seok (Lee Moo-saeng), a married man, which was criticized for romanticizing affairs, "I was worried at first," adding, "I wanted to express the two as comfortable and close friends who shared a lot of things for a long time."

The drama has received favorable reviews as it focuses on the “womance (a neologism that combines the word woman and romance)” of three women by depicting the scenes of friends who are eager to make Chan-young as the most beautiful terminally ill patient.

Jeon expressed her gratitude towards fellow actresses Son Ye-jin and Kim Ji-hyun, who are in the same age, saying, “Three of us fit perfectly with the characters.” 

The actress, who visited the wedding of a star couple Son Ye-jin and Hyun Bin, said, “Ji-hyun and I broke into tears at the moment we saw Son in her dress,” adding, “Even though it has only been 5 months since we have first met, it felt like my friend from high school was getting married.”  (END)
