(Yonhap Interview) Actor Kim Soo-hyun: 'I'm still clumsy but try to be closer to perfection'

Actor Kim Soo-hyun said Tuesday he gave his all to the forthcoming Korean action thriller "Real" to become an actor trusted by the audience.

The film about a conspiracy surrounding Asia's biggest casino has drawn anticipation for being Kim's comeback to the big screen four years after "Secretly Greatly."

In "Real," the 29-year-old actor plays two different roles both named Jang Tae-young -- one a vicious crime syndicate boss and the other a mysterious investor who looks just like the boss.

Kim has an R-rated love scene with Choi Jin-ri, a singer-turned-actress better known as former f(X) member Sulli, and performs splendid action sequences that look like a mix of boxing and modern dance.

"I wanted to extract all of what I have done, felt, studied and learned for the film," he said during an interview with Yonhap News Agency at a Seoul cafe.

The movie was unveiled for the first time through a press screening on Monday and showered with largely unfavorable reviews from film reporters. Kim, however, showed confidence that the audience will discover the film's hidden beauty.

"At first, they are not exposed because of the so-called visually 'strong' scenes. But when the lid of the movie opens and the power of the scenes are lost, many devices hidden in the movie will be revealed and the audience will find them out."

He conceded that he pondered a lot before deciding to join the work because of some of its violent and obscene scenes and the film's quite unfamiliar theme.

"I decided to appear in it on the thought of how happy I would be if I could express the two people differently."

However, the hero of "My Love from the Star" said he didn't intend to totally change his image through the R-rated movie.

"My goal is to become an actor trusted by the audience, and this character is on that path," he stressed.

Kim also touched on his chemistry with Choi.

"Before doing this film, I had no idea about how she speaks and acts," he said. "But she was so easygoing that it was comfortable working with her."

Debuting as a main actor in the KBS 2TV teen drama series "Dream High" in 2011, Kim rose to Asiawide stardom with other popular TV series, including "The Moon Embracing the Sun" and "My Love from the Star."

Many people may think his life has always been on track, but Kim said his 20s were mentally hard for him.

"After 'Dream High' and 'The Moon Embracing the Sun,' I had a lot of worries about people. It was difficult to look at people properly and to talk about myself."

And he was suddenly shocked to realize that he was like a princess who can do nothing on her own, and he wanted to fix that as soon as possible.

"I now feel the distance between Kim Soo-hyun in real life and actor Kim Soo-hyun is narrowing. I think I have come to have a broader mind," he said smiling comfortably.

Then what is he like in "real" life?

"I'm a person who is still clumsy in many ways but tries to be closer to perfection," he answered.

Directed by Lee Sa-rang, "Real" is to open in local theaters June 28.

Thanks, @klky007, for sharing this. Sounds like there will be pretty explicit scene.. :flushed:

It is extremely painful to read majority of netizens' harsh comments which focused solely on the explicit scene and the actress herself, discounting the excellent work and effort of others, especially KSH's dedicated acting. It will be so unfortunate if people are giving Real a miss due to these negative comments!

Hoping that KSH will not be too greatly affected by it, Real, fighting!

I've read close to 10 loosely-translated Korean media reviews, though not exactly favorable ones (on movie REAL), but almost all gave due credits to KSH for his good/convincing performance in it.

Frankly, I felt his pain after reading those harsh reviews.  He worked hard and did well depicting the 2 characters.  Most of all, he took up a challenge that not many are willing to risk.

Nevertheless, I will always remember what he said before...

"I have confidence in myself.  The problem is, the more confidence I have, the more nervous/timid I am.  If the characterization is perfect, but the project does not catch people's attention, it also cannot be helped.  If the project catches people's attention and gain popularity, but the characterization has flaws in it, to me, this is a terrifying failure." ~ KSH 2013

"Looking at those projects I chosen might feel I am a weird person who choose to take the muddy path and not the easy path.  I wish to take my path even there's no wealth or fame.  Popularity might not always stay, but I'm still young I believe I can pick myself up again.  Compare to those performance roles that match my age, I would prefer to show the acting skills which only Kim Soo Hyun can do!" ~ KSH 2014

REAL Fighting!  It is still leading the pre-sale rate registered at Korean Film Council

Hi Khlgpc! From what I know, Korean movies have strong, adult themes very regularily. So the mock outrage of netzens is funny.^_^ Already 'Real' is introducing very many new filming technologies and experimental ideas that are new and fascinating, so the film itself is a turning point in Korean film industry. It is also an international collaboration and the great pre-sales are indicative that people pay for what they care to watch and not listen to problems or controversies etc. Just Kim Soo-hyun's name is enough for people to trust in a great project.

Also movies are watched by a lot of audiences with a large age group and gender. So even if there are a few negative comments, it is not going to affect KSH. He already has a lot of support from his loyal fans. He and the movie are going to be fine.:)Real, Fighting!:D

That's true, @klky007 and @iluilu, in fact most of those negative comments that I read are so horrible that they are almost certainly coming from the die hard KSH haters! :fearful:

When I first saw him crying in Twitter, I felt really bad. Although the negative reviews were not directed at his performance in REAL, he would have been affected equally the same.  He poured everything he had into this movie.  In his interview, he said he felt like his soul left his body after receiving the harsh reviews. :(

NEWS

Kim Soo-hyun, 'Real' VIP premiere eventually burst into tears

Actor Kim Soo-hyun showed his tears at the VIP premiere of the film 'Real'.

Kim Soo-hyun showed tears as he introduced the movie to the audience at the 'Real' VIP premiere held at Wangsimni CGV in Hangdong-dong, Seongdong-gu, Seoul on June 27.

Kim Soo-hyun appeared on the screen and said, "Hello. It is Kim Soo-hyun who plays the role of 'real' Jang Tae-young. I really waited for a long time today. "And at the same time, he showed tears and at the same time he swallowed it.

At the audience, a man cheered, saying, "It's okay." Kim Soo-hyun tried to change the atmosphere by shouting the buzzword that cheered on him in MBC entertainment program "Infinite Challenge" recently.

Kim Soo-hyun said, "Today is expected and tension is high. Sometimes, movies can be unkind to you. "

This appearance is evident when a viewer who attended the VIP premiere at that time disclosed the video through SNS and the netizens are saddened.

The reason why Kim Soo-hyun showed his tears is that he not only caused controversy because of "pre-release" and "director's replacement" from before opening "Real," but also because he was puzzled by the criticism of the movie released after the premiere.

'Real' is an action noir that depicts the huge secrets and conspiracies of the two men surrounding the largest casino in Asia, including Kim Soo-hyun, Choi Jin-ri (Sully), Lee Sung-min, Seong Dong Il, Cho Woo-jin and Lee Kyung-young.

NEWS (English)

I extracted part of the news only as both articles are quite long.  For complete news, do click on the links below.

Actor Kim Soo-hyun takes dual role in 'Real'

Kim did not receive the severe criticism that his new film is receiving as many critics say Kim saved the movie with his acting to a certain point.

Despite playing two different characters with the same name and making an identical appearance in one of the scenes, Kim managed to differentiate the two characters through distinguished psychologies. The actor said he focused on the attitude of each Jang Tae-yeoung and this helped him naturally make different gestures as he was engrossed in each of the characters separately.

"Real" had the highest ticket sales as of Tuesday with 27.7 percent at the local box office.

Alter egos, drugs, psychoanalysis: Cast, director explain eerie charm of ‘Real’

(This article explains better the different characters in REAL)

In the film, Kim plays the dual role of casino gang boss Jang Tae-young who is suffering from a multiple personality disorder, and his alter ego, a freelance reporter.

Kim gives vigorous performances as the dangerous drug-addicted mobster engaged in a turf war with a rival gang, his eerie doppelganger and a meek reporter investigating the effects of a powerful new drug.

I completely agree with him!

Kim Soo Hyun Reveals What He Thinks Makes Him Charming

Actor Kim Soo Hyun talked candidly about what he thinks his charms are on the June 27 broadcast of KBS Cool FM’s “Lee Hong Ki’s Kiss the Radio.”

During the broadcast, Lee Hong Ki complimented Kim Soo Hyun, saying, “You have a nice voice.” Kim Soo Hyun said shyly and humbly, “It’s not always nice. It’s sometimes okay.”

Lee Hong Ki then asked him, “What are you most confident about out of face, voice, and your acting skills?” Kim Soo Hyun answered, “I think, very honestly, my charm is that I am not the best at any of the three things you mentioned. However, because I’m not the best at any of them, the combination of those three things makes for something charming.” He then added, “It’s the balance that’s important.”

Do you agree with Kim Soo Hyun?
