‘Closer to Heaven’ actors win Blue Dragon awards

Director Bong Joon-ho’s critically acclaimed movie “Mother” and the two leading actors from the tearjerker “Closer to Heaven” took top honors at the Blue Dragon Film Awards in Seoul on Wednesday.

The Blue Dragon Film Awards, which is celebrating its 30th event this year, is a major film awards ceremony in Korea along with the Daejong Film Awards held early last month.

Actor Kim Myung-min, who is well known for his rigorous self-discipline and his ability to adapt to different roles, actually shed 20 kilograms (44 pounds) to play a patient with Lou Gehrig’s disease (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) in Closer to Heaven, for which he was awarded the Best Actor award. Kim’s dedication to his work was also recognized at this year’s Daejong Film Awards, and he earned top acting honors there as well.

“I thank God for giving me the talent for acting, but I’m more thankful for not having received more of it so that I can always strive to be better,” Kim said in a memorable speech after receiving the award.

The highlight of the event came when actress Ha Ji-won was named Best Actress. Although Ha has proven herself as a powerful actress on both the big and small screens over the past 14 years, she had not won any major awards for her work until her Blue Dragon award win. She did, however, win acting honors at an awards ceremony for the fifth University Film Festival of Korea, an emerging festival that was held on Tuesday, the night before the Blue Dragon Film Awards.

And even though her performances in this year’s box-office hits “Haeundae” and “Closer to Heaven” were well received by both critics and audiences, Ha also had the misfortune of being excluded from the Best Actress nominations at the Daejong Film Awards due to a voting controversy that riled Ha’s supporters.

“I wondered if this day would ever come,” Ha said in a tearful acceptance speech.

The Best Director prize went to Kim Yong-hwa for “Take Off,” a fictionalized account of Korea’s national ski jumping team.

Meanwhile, budding actor Jin Goo of Mother and seasoned actress Kim Hae-sook of Park Chan-wook’s “Thirst” took home awards for Best Supporting Actor and Actress, respectively.

'Mother' wins Blue Dragon

December 03, 2009

"Mother."

HONG KONG – "Mother," South Korea's contender for the foreign-language Oscar, was Wednesday named as best film at the Blue Dragon Film Awards in Seoul.

The Bong Joon-ho-directed picture also picked up a best supporting actor win for Jin Goo and best cinematography.

The best director prize went to Kim Yong-hwa, for sports comedy "Take Off," a win which was a repeat of his victory at last month's Grand Bell awards.

"Closer to Heaven" earned Kim Myung-min and Ha Ji-won the best actor and best actress prizes, respectively.

Kang Hyoung-Chul was names as best new director for hit "Scandal Makers," while Yang Ik-june, who wrote, directed, and starred in his debut film "Breathless" won the prize for best new actor. Kim Kko-bbi of "Breathless" and Park Bo-young of "Scandal Makers" shared the prize for best new actress.

The ceremony, held at the KBS Hall, also included a prize for "Haeundae" as the film with the biggest audience of the year (11.5 million spectators and an estimated box office of $69 million) and a posthumous award for Jang Jin-young. The two-time winner of the best actress award died of stomach cancer in September, aged 35.

English-subbed video of KMM's speech here.

091207 - Why didn't Kim Myung Min's win cause a dispute?

21088141.jpg

Due to the decline of authority and confidence in the fairness and winner selection process of television, film and music award ceremonies, continuous criticism have been initiated towards the recipients. Consequently, television stations have canceled music award ceremonies, which then spread the criticism toward television and movie awards, many people even requested that the award ceremonies be canceled.

In the midst of all this came a star who attracted everyone's attention: Kim Myung Min. Kim Myung Min, who swept Top Acting Awards and Best Actor Awards, was never questioned as an elected winner, many people even thought that "the award went to the most deserving."

"I never thought I deserved to win, thank [God] for not giving me enough acting talent, so that I need to work 2 to 3 times harder."

Kim Myung Min of "Closer to Heaven" received the Best Actor Award at last month's 46th Daejong Film Festival, and later, on the 2nd of this month at the 30th Blue Dragon Film Festival, he won the Best Actor award again. After hearing his acceptance speech, most viewers and netizens expressed the same sentiment towards his win: "The most deserving person won the award", "The win was a matter of course for Kim Myung Min, who is an outstanding actor", "The acting 'bonjoa' (champion, the best) is still Kim Myung Min".

Especially in cases where Kim Myung Min shared his award with someone else, no matter if they were chosen according to drama ratings, or to assure that a young popular star was included, or to maintain balance, which exposes the many defects of the television company and its award ceremony, Kim Myung Min is one of the few actors who would never be questioned in receiving an award.

Ever since 2005, winning the television Top Excellence Awards has been the norm for Kim Myung Min. He played the title character in "The Immortal Lee Soon Shin", and garnered the biggest award at the 2005 KBS Awards, the Korea Visual Arts Festival's Photogenic Award, and the Korea Broadcasting Awards for Best Talent. After "The Immortal Lee Soon Shin", he played the entirely different mannered Oh Dal Gun in the SBS television drama "Bad Family", and won the SBS Drama Awards for Best Actor, the PD Award, and the Producers Awards of Korea for Best Performer.

He then appeared in "White Tower", and the always dedicated Kim Myung Min won the Grime Awards for Best Actor, the PaekSang Arts Awards for Best TV Actor, the MBC Drama Awards for Best Actor, and the Korean PD Awards for Best Performer.

Through last year's performance in "Beethoven Virus", Kim Myung Min swept all the television acting awards, and set a new record. The awards Kim Myung Min received for "Beethoven Virus" include: the 2nd Korean Television Association Awards, the 2008 MBC Drama Awards Grand Prize, the 2009 PaekSang Arts Awards for Best TV Actor, the 2009 Producers Awards of Korea for Best Performer, and the Korea Broadcasting Association Awards for Best Actor.

You're welcome! ;)

Yeah, that issue has been raised by the translator in MMI.

However, we did not change it since that article is a direct translation of the original Korean article. We will get in touch with the reporter from MyDaily and we hope that the error will be corrected soon.

^ To be honest, I think mydaily article's a bit too much even though Kim Myung-Min is definitely great.

Unlike the winners at the controversial MBC drama awards, Song Kang-Ho and Kim Yoon-Seok are considered two of Korea's Best Of The Best actors. I don't think there would be a dispute if the award goes to either of them. And Ha Jung-Woo is extremely talented, he was chosen Best Actor at this year's Pusan Film Critics Association Awards (this one is considered the most fair). Critics Choice Awards gave Best Actor to Lee Beom-Soo. Both chose Kim Hye-Ja for Best Actress.

[EDIT] Best Actor winners at various award shows this year:

Chunsa: Song Kang-Ho

Pusan Film Critics Association: Ha Jung-Woo

Buil: Ha Jung-Woo

Grand Bell: Kim Myung-Min

Critics Choice: Lee Beom-Soo

The youku link had only 1 part, therefore it didn't show my lovely couple in there. (I thought they skipped broadcasting/recording the best actor & actress award.)

I'm very happy to see the 2nd part of tudou. I'd greatly appreciate for your time finding the links ^_^

Probably the writer still upset with last MBC. might be the netizen too.

Last MBC daesang so memorable. they might be think that Kim myung min was treated unfairly by MBC .

so that why we say he deserved to win .

i think this is one of the best, all actors in nomination are Great actors .

Ha jung woo, kim yoon seok, Jang dong Gun , Song Kang Ho .

Valleygirl: I didn't mean to say that KMM didn't deserve winning it, he's a brilliant actor.

i thought the writer said that he's the only one who should win Best Actor at Blue Dragon, I probably misunderstood it.

'Thirst,' 'Mother' stars named best performers by Korean directors

SEOUL, Dec. 17 (Yonhap) -- Veteran actor Song Gang-ho and actress Kim Hye-ja have been selected as the best performers of the year by South Korean directors for their respective roles in the internationally acclaimed "Thirst" and "Mother," the directors' network said Thursday.

Song, who played the role of a Catholic priest-turned-vampire in "Thirst," will be honored with the best actor title at the Directors' Cut Awards for the fifth time, the Korea Directors' Network said in a press release.

"Thirst," directed by Park Chan-wook, won the third-highest Jury Award at the Cannes International Film Festival this year.

Song, 42, is recognized as one of the most influential actors in South Korea, winning several local awards for his roles in "Joint Security Area, (2000) ," "The Host (2006)" and "Secret Sunshine (2007)."

Kim Hye-ja, 68, a popular TV celebrity widely known for her on-screen persona of a benevolent mother, surprised fans with her intense performance in "Mother," the fourth feature by director Bong Joon-ho.

Noted for her intense portrayal of obsessive and peculiar maternal love in the Cannes-invited mystery thriller, Kim was also named best actress by the Asia Pacific Screen Awards and China's Golden Rooster and Hundred Flowers Film Festival this year.

Director Park of "Thirst" will be honored the best filmmaker of the year, while Ounie Lecomte of "A Brand New Life" has been named the best emerging director. Yoon Je-kyoon of "Haeundae" has been selected as the best producer of the year and Yang Ik-joon the best independent filmmaker for his internationally acclaimed "Breathless," the directors' network added.

The Directors' Cut Awards were established in 1998. Some 250 South Korean directors take part in the vote each year.

The award ceremony will be held in Seoul on Monday.
