I don't get it when people try to discredit album sales, when the income generated is the lifeline of the music industry.

So if, say, a certain entertainment company chooses to flood the market with incessant products (inc. endorsements) -- & the fandom lap it up -- then give them their due.

It's a more legit validation than streaming-music libraries or illegal downloads or Youtube viewers or even TV ratings. Very little actual royalty payments from these sources, if at all.

The other profitable revenue stream are appearance fees & concert box offices, esp. overseas.

The post-RAIN generation is still taking baby steps in this, but the language barrier & lack of crossover hit songs are obstacles.

Even JYP is playing to converted audiences on his annual "world" tours (in reality only a handful of dates).

Whereas WG is becoming a trailblazer by constantly touring & performing (daily shows at their busiest; weekly shows when the pace slows) since relocating out of Korea.

IMO No current Kpop artiste works as hard on a global scale. Too bad this feat is largely undermentioned & undervalued, even by fellow WFs when the girls don't go to their region.

I also don't knock Kpop artistes for eyeing Japan. It's a lucrative market (2nd biggest in the world).

WG was not targeted for Japan at the outset cuz it was a different idol market then.

Instead, JYP decided to earmark them for China in 2007 -- the USA  market was 2 years later -- & have the girls study the language.

For that reason, I think WG will continue to focus there if their Korean & global popularity wanes.

There were bubblegum artistes around in 2007, but overall Jpop was more 'pop'-driven with genuine singing prowess required. SM Town had found the ideal crossover artiste in BoA.

Girlgroups, as I posited before, were not as trendy since the MAX & Speed heyday. It revived only after TVXQ made 'visual' idol music hip again & the likes of Kara venturing over to convert a new audience.

So, again, let's give them their due: they were trendsetters. JYP only jumped on the bandwagon insomeways with 4Minute (yeah, I know they are signed with Cube Ent.) last year.

I am looking more at the industry networking viewpoint. Cube, which is autonomous, broke into Japan with the help of Universal Music, whereas JYP works with the same partner for WG's Chinese releases for now.

That said, I hope WG will visit with Japanese WFs. Other Asian fans have enjoyed the privilege.

Musically, it remains to see how the idol market evolves in Japan with the Kpop influence.

IMO WG's chances there depend more on the old-school 'talent singer' model, ala MAX & Speed. The 'aegyo'  direction of So Hot & Eebabo was a long time ago; the girls are also much older now.

LiaoningTV has started discreetly recording their annual CNY show. Yesterday (January 15), they held a dress rehearsal before rolling the cameras. This year's event is star-studded with numerous celebrities participating. It will air on the evening of twelfth lunar month 29th day (Tuesday, Feb 1 2011) as an appetizer for Chinese New Year Eve (Feb 2).

I am still browsing YouTube for Monster Awards 2011 clips, but it seems that the Wonder Girls ones have been all published.

It's amazing how the Wonder Girls were allowed last minute to open for such a huge lineup -- some "Bring the funk back" times 10 -- if JY was there I bet he was spazzing like a kid.

Monster seems connected with many important musicians, not limited to current stars -- this alliance looks like a very good one.

Another little hint of the whole world domination to come: JYP Nation - This Christmas was broadcast on a French TV channel last December, apparently on a program that has no links with Asian or Korean music. A comment caught the announcer having trouble pronouncing "JYP"^^

I'm delighted by the hints that the next Wonder Girls record will feature different producers with JYP taking a low-profile position (really? After all the hard learned lessons in the US pre-2009, I bet he's checking every aspect of the next record). There are so many possibilities: this might mark the end of the retro concept hits, or just add more musical flavors to the usual Wonder Girls style. As underscored recently in the Pivot Conference, we should not expect a conversion to plain US mainstream genres.

Ahhh... cant' wait any longer!

JYP talks about the Wonder Girls' return

We've previously reported on the Wonder Girls' possible return. JYP has furthered the rumors and said, "I wrote the Wonder Girls' songs while filming KBS 2TV's Dream High. I really feel good about this one. Girls, I think this is pretty good, look forward to it. Sunye, it's not because of the present you gave me this morning" on his Twitter.

When fans asked him about the new album, JYP responded, "The best song writers in the world helped make this album. I'm the worst composer on the album, doesn't that make you look forward to it? ^^ It's going to be the best album ever, so please look forward to it."

- 가장 큰 장벽이 있었다면.

“아무래도 언어다. 언어는 단순한 말이 아니라 문화이기 때문에 익히는 데 시간이 걸린다. 원더걸스의 경우 라이프스타일을 몸에 익히기 위해 영어 회화와 별도로 연기 수업을 받기도 했다.”

- 어느 정도 궤도에 올라섰다고 자평하나.

“아직까지 연습게임을 치렀다고 생각한다. 본 게임은 원더걸스의 EP앨범이 나오는 3~4월쯤 시작된다. 이전엔 한 곡짜리 싱글 앨범밖에 없었으니까. 6~7곡이 담기는 이번 앨범엔 로드니 저킨스·클라우드 켈리 등 미국의 유명 뮤지션들이 작곡으로 참여한다.”

- 미국에서 7년간 활동하면서 가장 많이 달라진 점은.

“한국 가수들에 대한 시선이다. 맨 처음 도전할 땐 웬만한 음반사에선 문도 잘 안 열어줬다. 하지만 요즘은 먼저 연락을 해오는 경우가 많다. 원더걸스의 EP 앨범도 3대 메이저 음반사 가운데 한 곳에서 발매될 것이다.”

- 미국이 K-POP에 주목하는 까닭은.

“미국 음반시장이 포화 상태에 이르면서 아시아 시장으로 눈을 돌리기 시작했다. 아시아 시장에서 단연 앞서가는 K-POP에 주목하는 건 당연한 일이다. 미국 음반사에서도 한국에서 음원이 뜰 경우 아시아 전체를 커버할 수 있다는 걸 알고 있다.”

- 유튜브 등 손쉽게 미국에 진출할 수 있는 길이 열렸는데.

“유튜브는 어디까지나 보조 수단이다. 현지에서 직접 네트워크를 형성하고 음반을 발매할 수 있어야 팬층도 넓어지고 안정적으로 활동할 수 있다.”

Hi, I'm an SNSD fan, but I'm also a WG fan and I have to say that ANTIS can be one of the most annoying things in this world. I don't see why they'd hate these girls especially SunYe who's always well-grounded and very talented. qoxie, thanks for the heads-up. What I get from the google-trans is that Europe is expected to be one of the next expansions of Hallyu (of course ^^).

The Youtube ranking on the map lists Asia at the top, followed by North America, Europe, and South America. Very encouraging - if just Italy was in Europe front-runners it would be perfect to me.

In the article there's a part about France - Recently a France 2 TV special about Korea was aired -- I've seen it this week but did not mention, cause I thought it was off-topic.

France 2 "Eye on the world" (Un oeil sur la Planète) is a 2-hours long documentary about South Korea aired Jan 3. It reports about economy & technology (with a long segment dedicated to Samsung), the trouble with North Korea, dramas, kpop music, and religion. Very interesting and well made, sadly the kpop part was short and focused on the competition.

There's a full upload of it on the internet and the poster has begun subbing it in English.

Waiting for a translation, I saw in the Google-translated to English JoongAng Ilbo interview to Rainstone this standout phrase:
