@wonderr23

i agree heavily with the point the writer tried to make but in the end most people would still prefer manufactured idols rather than proper singers/musicians. our love for idols is just adding to the problem lol. Watch out for 2011 cause that year is gonna see a surge in idol groups etc...

true. at the end of the day, idols still OWNS the music industry. It's kindah sad though that some idols who doesn't deserve all the credit..gets it. And those who are truly talented like the veterans are shunned. To me nothing in Korea is original anymore.haha I'm more of in a neutral sight though. The only idols i truly support are wonder girls. For me, their music is real music. Besides WG..uhmmm NONE. I like veteran musicians like Hot Potato and Yurisangja. Those artists produce their own music.

Mandu looked straight at mindot!XD You can see a little bit of Hyerim here too.

Are Vapid Girl Bands the Best We Can Do in Music?

Oooh, someone did not have a good Xmas. :P

'Manufactured' is such a harsh word. I can live with 'prefabricated', which is more neutral.

Actually, it's an old argument. Dance music rules cuz the market prefers it for the idol genre. (Seo Taiji had attempted different genres in the '90s.)

So it's a matter of delivering quality stuff. To me, the entertainment companies have mostly delivered, even though one of them -- the most corporate one *cough* *cough* -- loves to flood the market with supplementary material.

The 'fatigue' results from this business strategy. Unfortunately, they dominate the market so the other players get blamed too.

With the sweeping criticisms, what is always ignored is the brilliant songwriting craft & genre innovation (hip hop, R&B, ballads, electronica, etc.). The songs are much more interesting than America's, which are more formulaic (from Backstreet Boys to Jobros).

What is worrying is the lack of Kpop renewal. The 2007 & earlier idols still eclipse their hoobaes in credibility, even though this "sunbae class" (except SM Town's) have mostly relocated overseas.

Then again, they are all selling to a youthful market which can be very impressionable -- & fickle.

At least JYP is enough of a visionary to realize the Kpop fad may not last forever. Hence the overseas collaboration with Mnet & having WG/missA learn Chinese & English, etc.

The power struggles in Korea -- SM Town vs. Mnet; YG vs. MBC; now SBS wants to start one with the MAMA attendees -- are just narrow-minded.

As for TV overexposure, the idol-associated variety shows underwhelm in the ratings anyway, despite their online popularity.

I don't think having guitar groups or real musicians on these shows would have made a difference. They also have limited appeal for the infotainment shows.

Meanwhile, the respected TV personalities still dominate the medium. The entertainers who lose out to the idols here are, rather, up-&-coming comedians & actors.

So TRUE. This is so true!! and this is what upsets me the most!! -_- Now i should better halt before i start ranting over this.

Some of your points though..i can't agree. Again it's all about one's perception and mindset of everything. Still...great words of wisdom from you.lol

Anyways...the OST that Sunye was supposed to sing for DREAM HIGH. The people at daum are still talking about it. They seem to be affirmative about the OST happening (which i'm most wishing for to be a reality)! Please JYPe make it happen!

Ah, I must concede SM hitmaker Yoo Young Jin is guilty of re-writing 'Sorry Sorry' too many times. That rascal... *wink*

Still, I think it's glaring how WG & the Big Bang boys blew away the likes of 2PM & 2NE1 in showmanship skills at the MAMA Awards.

IMO That event really expose the gap level in live performances, once everyone is taken out of the packaged Korean music shows.

(WG did not even get to rehearse much, except for the acrobat stunt. They had performed in Hangzhou the previous night.)

As I once said, the girls are now 'talent singers' (实力派) & not 'idol singers' (偶像派), to borrow from Chinese categorizations.

Hey, I was about to post those May Pang's AMIN photos too.

They are from a new blog. I saw their JYP Nation report yesterday but decided to wait until they upload the photos.

FYI The Sunye pics are from Dec 24, i.e. she performed at JYP's concert (same venue) after the JYP Nation show ended.

The 1st concert started 6:30pm; the other one started 11pm. Poor girl must have been on call for at least 6 hours at night!

Here is the blog account of the JYP concert:

JYP NATION Rocks Out with Team Play For Christmas Eve

Posted by Christina Jacildo On December - 25 - 2010

jypnation300x199.jpg

December 24th marked the day of Christmas Eve and a bitter cold day in Seoul, Korea. However that did not stop JYP Nation from showcasing their special holiday concert called “Team Play” that evening at Olympic Park Gymnastics Stadium. It was a really great experience for me especially, since this would be my first concert in Korea and what other way to spend it with JYP Entertainment! Team Play showcases performances from JYP himself, Wonder Girls, 2PM, Miss A, Lim Jeong Hee, JOO, and San-E.

The concert started at around 7:30 and I was really expecting just artists performing their set of songs, leave, and then another artist comes up and sing their set. Oh no, I forgot that this is JYP. They definitely did something different. The show opened with JYP rapper San-E (December 24th marked his 100th day since his debut) singing his debut hit “Delicious San-E” with Miss A’s Jia and Fei and Wonder Girl’s SoHee and Sunye as his back up dancers. Then I realized the artists were going to be singing each other’s songs! For example 2PM would sing Wonder Girls’/Miss A songs and vice versa; which was amazing because it definitely showed a different side to each artist.

A bunch of awesome things happened at this concert, but I will narrow it down to my top three.

Let’s start with number one. It would have to be the video showing the history of JYP Entertainment. It showed his hard work and dedication he put into developing his artists, which showcased a list of all the artists he has produced. He also explained in the video that he is a leader, however, it isn’t easy to be a leader. His definition of a leader was pretty humorous, but me explaining it would be very difficult. It was one of those ‘you had to be there moments.’ I’ll just give an example. He said ‘A leader must present himself in a professional manner’ and it showed 2AM’s Jo Kwon acting out.

Next, would be G.O.D.’s Kim TaeWoo and Son HoYoung joining the Wonder Girls and 2PM, singing their hit songs. Did you know that JYP produced G.O.D. back in the day? If not, you do now!

Lastly, of course, was RAIN popping out of the floor like a daisy! Seriously, I was not expecting that at all. He sang “I Have a Woman” with JYP and he sang his hit song “It’s Raining.” JYP and Rain had a special moment on stage. They both exchanged a few heart warming words following JYP asking the audience “Do you wanna see MBLAQ?” resulting in Rain playfully pushing him.

JYP Nation was a lot of fun. In fact, I did wish to see more of Lim Jeong Hee, she was amazing!!! As for JOO, I wish she would come back. She has an amazing voice and dances so well! If given the opportunity again, I would gladly attend. They got the crowd jumping with energy as well as geared up for the holiday season.

A very big thank you to JYP Entertainment for their hard work and letting us attend and cover this event. We had a great time!

Stay tuned for photos from this event!

[Omitted one photo of JYP + RAIN.]

LOL some years ago I thought I was not going for prefabricated music anymore... and here I am.

I'm totally with qoxie, to me the Korean "prefab" productions are fresher and have good quality. I would just love a bit less of electronics and less pre-recorded music on-stage, but that's a plus when the music is good.

I must also say that to me the musical range appearing on tv seems wider in Korea than in many countries, covering from classical to mainstream to alternative. Here for example real indie performers are confined to MTV sub-channels in MV form only.

I am not comfortable with the 'renewal' issue, because I don't like the short arc of the typical idol group. Some past idols were good enough to deserve a longer career. BTW how to debut new groups in 2011 in the current overcrowded arena?

--

Packing my bags now -- gonna return next year. I'll miss the flood of pics and news

Happy holidays Wonderfuls!

sorry if my comment is long..I know some of might disagree with my comment but I totally agree with article that is posted by wonderr23 as much as I love KPOP but their is nothing original about KPOP all the music that is produced sound exactly the same and some how is copycat of "tell me" I mean all most every song that came out after tell me sound exactly like tell me the whole addictive and repetitive lyrics which some how it shows that Korean producers are not working hard to be original but instead they are copying each other...also it is sad that idol groups are the only ones that is doing good in Korea and if u are not idol ur career is simply over... I don't want to compare but if u look at JPOP yes u will have idol groups like Arashi and AKB48 that is doing amazingly good but at the same u will still have groups like Mr children a rock indie band that debut back in the late 80s that can still sell over million of copies with zero promotion or perfume a electropop female group to me this what makes JPOP in whole different level .. I love kpop but all I wish is for the producers to start being more original and I hope their will also be a balance between artists and idol groups.

It's bubblegum dance music. Sure there are copycats (blatant ones like Girl2School & Nine Muses quickly got the thumbs down this year) but the recycled factor is another thing.

You have to evaluate the latter on their own terms: singalong, hooks, melodies, personality, catchiness, timelessness &, for the most part, contrived innocence. Plus the visual concept.

The Jpop equivalent nowadays, eg. Hello Project (Morning Musume) & AKB48, partake in self-parodying themes for the otakus -- how many schoolgirl/sailorgirl concepts have they gone through? -- unlike the Kpop versions (esp. JYP, YG girlgroups) which are celebratory in nature.

Their relentless products are just the kind of 'corporate' music I alluded to, except Kpop (esp. SM, DSP) has surpassed them in packaging & slick dances.

Also, the 'better' Jpop bubblegum songs belong to a different subgenre anyway, i.e. guitar-based bands influenced by punk music.

Keeping the conversation to idol music:

I always thought TVXQ was able to succeed there cuz Jpop failed to renew itself with newer boybands to compete against older versions (Arashi, Kat-Tun, News, etc.)

SM Town spotted a vacuum & quickly filled it. Jpop still hasn't found native successors yet, which is why I suppose 2PM is going to give it a shot.

The Jpop girlgroup heyday arguably ended long ago, after MAX & Speed broke up. Kara & now SNSD want to revive it; best of luck to them.

Old fanpics. WG & 2PM arriving in Taiwan for Mnet Ultimate. (Can't spot MBLAQ.)

I remember this was when Sohee started wearing flats without feeling self-conscious.

She looks really short here, like a kid.
