mailene, so happy & glad to hear that you like the compilation. Hope it doesn't clog the thread traffic too much. It may sounded pretty lame to some people but compiling pics (though panda here gets all crossed-eyed, the more the merrier! ^^) and indexing stuff about Byunghun-ssi .. sharing everything about him albeit just in cyberspace and often times in monologues.. is what keeps me going all these years. Won't change it any other way.

I know there some more pics from the press conference that we haven't seen.. must find those!

Seems that IRIS will be in Hungary next.. or it it Hungary the last spot? Hope Turkey is still on..

Lee Byung-hun hops from 'G.I. Joe' to 'IRIS'

Spy thriller looks to be one of Korea's biggest movies of the year

By Patrick Frater

m135.jpg

CANNES -- Lee Byung-hun, who next appears in "G.I. Joe," has been tapped to headline "IRIS: The Movie," a $20 million spy thriller that is set to be one of the biggest Korean movies of the year. International rights have been acquired by indie sales firm Fine Cut.

Lee, in Cannes last year with "The Good, The Bad, The Weird," plays a spy whose agency turns against him and who ends up as the love rival of his best friend.

Production is by Taewon Entertainment, which has set up the project as both a movie and a TV series. Directors are TV director Kim Kyu-tae and film director Yang Yun-ho ("Fighter in the Wind").

After kicking off in Japan, the project is now shooting in Korea and will wrap after further work in Hungary.

Lee also stars alongside Josh Hartnett in the forthcoming Franco-Asian picture "I Come With The Rain" and guest starred in Japanese hit "Hero."

Korean producer Taewon Chung is producing the project, through his production outfit Taewon Entertainment, as a feature film and TV series simultaneously. Yang Yun-ho and renowned TV director Kim Kyu-tae are co-directing both the film and TV series.

Lee plays a secret agent who is betrayed by his closest friend at his own agency. Then both men fall in love with the same woman – a profiling specialist played by Kim.

Meanwhile, Finecut has also picked up international rights to Kanikosen, a black comedy from award-winning Japanese director Sabu which stars Ryuhei Matsuda (Nightmare Detective).

Lee Byung-hun: "I was shocked by the ajimas who came into the open-air onsen"

20090514073812.jpg

Korean star, Lee Byung-hun revealed an incident that has happened at the open-air onsen.

Lee Byung-hun who was at the press conference of "IRIS" held at the 9th Avenue on 12th May, talked about what happened at the open-air onsen when the reporters asked him if there was anything interesting during his stay in Japan.

Lee Byung-hun said: "During my filming in Japan, I had a day break from filming. So, I went to a well-known open-air onsen in Akita with my manager in the evening. When we were relaxing ourselves in the dip, I was shocked to see a group of ajimas came walking in suddenly. As the place is very steamy and visibility is only about 2 meters, we were lucky that we were not being noticed and were able to leave the place safely."

He said: "I experienced the cultural differences from this personal encounter at the Japanese onsen and I will not forget the fans that came to visit."

He continued to say in a surprise tone: "It does not matter whether it was late in the night or early in the morning, we were always watched by 200-300 fans during our filming. It was really a very interesting experience. The fans would arrive early at the shooting site and they were always earlier than our staff."

Jung Joon-Ho, his co-star in IRIS said: "Lee Byung-hun has mentioned that he love to drink red wine in his fan meet and interviews, so the Japanese fans sent a lot over. Inside Lee Byung-hun's room, there were several hundred bottles which he can enjoy the whole year-round.” This confirms the high popularity of Lee Byung-hun.

Summer movie preview

200905150015.jpg

Top: Drag Me to Hell/Mother/Memento Mori 5

Middle: G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra/Terminator: Salvation/Angels and Demons

Bottom: Public Enemies/Transformers 2: The Revenge of the Falle/Halloween

With the long sweltering summer season ahead, those wanting to seek refuge from the blistering heat and humidity will undoubtedly seek solace in the safe air-conditioned confines of their local multiplex.

What they are likely to watch are sequels of big-time franchises in the same vein as "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," a Marvel-based comic book film which pulled in over $70 million in its opening weekend at the North American box office.

Despite highly unfavorable reviews, the film performed well above early projections. Tracing back the roots of Wolverine (Hugh Jackman), the prequel came into the Korean box office behind the hotly anticipated Park Chan-wook vampire noir "Thirst," which opened at top spot. But steep weekly declines are projected for "Wolverine" as is expected with other summer films that open big but wane quickly from audience's attention.

This year's roster of summer fare includes continuing sagas about robots ("Transformers 2: The Revenge of the Fallen," "Terminator: Salvation"), museums ("A Night at the Museum 2"), teenaged wizards ("Harry Potter and The Half Blood Prince"), and Muay Thai acrobats ("Ong Bak 2").

Joining in on the quest for box office bounty will be new entries its studios hope will become new franchises. A pair of high profile titles this summer and another in November will feature Korean actors in both supporting and leading roles.

Rain will headline the James McTiegue-helmed "Ninja Assassin," set for a November release, Jun Ji-hyun will be the lead in "Blood," and Hallyu-star Lee Byung-hun will have a supporting role as a Ninja assassin in "G.I. Joe."

For more refined and less casual moviegoers, the 2009 summer season will be one to look forward to as veteran auteur and visual maestro Michael Mann goes back to what he does best with the epic crime saga "Public Enemies."

"Spider Man" and "Evil Dead" series director Sam Raimi will also go back to his roots by revisiting the horror genre with the bluntly-titled "Drag Me to Hell," while pulp genre extraordinaire Quentin Tarantino will be back in the game with the World War 2-based film, "Inglourious Basterds," about Nazi-hunting Jews gone wild.

'G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra' (TBA)

Paramount Pictures and Hasbro, whose previous collaboration was the worldwide blockbuster "Transformers," join forces for another potentially lucrative action-adventure franchise in "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra." From the Egyptian desert to deep below the polar ice caps, the elite G.I. Joe team uses the latest in next-generation spy and military equipment to fight the corrupt arms dealer Destro and the growing threat of the mysterious Cobra organization to prevent them from plunging the world into chaos. Directed by Stephen Sommers of "The Mummy" franchise fame, the film will feature Hallyu-star Lee Byung-hun as Storm Shadow, a retired Ninjitsu expert who trains the G.I. Joe team.
