Cause of Actor's Fatal Accident Remains a Mystery

Source: The Chosun Ilbo

An autopsy of actor Kim Joo-hyuk has found no signs of a stroke or heart attack that might have led to his fatal car accident last month.

There was also no evidence that Kim was drunk or had taken drugs. The only lead police have that something unusual happened just before his Mercedes-Benz SUV careened into the sidewalk and down a flight of stairs is the testimony of a witness, who said the actor was leaning on his steering wheel and appeared to be in pain.

Police in Gangnam said Tuesday, "As an initial autopsy report showed, the direct cause of Kim's death was massive head injury."

According to forensics experts who conducted the second autopsy, only a small trace of antihistamines was found in Kim's body, but no traces of alcohol.

"It looks like the medicine was taken at least a few days before his death and does not appear to have played a role in the accident," a police spokesman said.

The antihistamines were apparently intended to treat skin problems and can cause heart problems. But police said the amount found in Kim's body was too small to lead to such side effects.

Kim's SUV collided twice with a sedan on Oct. 30 before careening on the sidewalk on a busy boulevard near COEX in southern Seoul. The SUV then crashed down some steps and into the side of an apartment complex about 150 m away.

Police said they cannot completely rule out the possibility that Kim suffered some sort of physical problem just before the accident. Lee Yoon-sung, a forensics expert at Seoul National University, said, "A person can suddenly lose consciousness due to angina or arrhythmia, and that can be difficult to detect in an autopsy."

Police are now focusing their investigation on the car. It has been hauled off to the National Institute of Scientific Investigation and the final results of analysis are expected in about a month. There was a black box inside, but it only contained footage of the street in front of the vehicle and no audio recordings.

"Kim appears to have turned the audio recording function off," the police spokesman said.

[Video] Police release black box footage from late actor's car

By Lim Jeong-yeo The Korea Herald

Gangnam Police Station on Tuesday released black box footage from actor Kim Joo-hyuk’s car showing the moments leading up to the crash that killed him.

The police discovered the black box beneath the passenger seat of Kim’s Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen.

The video shows Kim’s car suddenly slowing, then steering erratically. It hits another car while attempting to change lanes, before suddenly veering off the road, across the sidewalk and into a building.

The video has no audio recording, lending little help to finding the exact cause of Kim’s accident.

Kim died on Oct. 30, shocking those who knew him both personally and through his filmography.

The actor’s most recent work was TV series “Argon.” Two posthumous films, “Heungbu” and “Dokjeon” are scheduled for release in 2018.

Fans of veteran actor killed in crash have two films to look forward to

"Heung Bu," starring the late South Korean veteran actor Kim Joo-hyuk (left), opens in theaters in the Lunar New Year holiday season in early February.

By Ko Dong-hwan The Korea Times

Two movies starring a popular actor killed in a car accident in October will be released this year.

In February, period drama "Heung Bu," starring the late Kim Joo-hyuk, opens in South Korean theaters. The movie is based on popular Korean folklore novel "Heungbu and Nolbu," a story promoting virtue and reproaching vice. It features embittered younger brother Heungbu and greedy older brother Nolbu.

The film, set during the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910), follows a prodigal author named Heung Bu (played by Jung Woo) who writes a novel, "Heungbu and Nolbu." Kim plays Heungbu in the novel, a debonair man who pities people of low social class. Nolbu is an opportunist with a constant desire for money and power.

Kim Joo-hyuk played the leader of a North Korean criminal ring in "Confidential Assignment" (2017).

Fans remember Kim in real life as not so different from Heungbu. In the KBS reality comedy show "2 Days & 1 Night", the actor was gentle, full of joy and caring.

"Kim's actual character has a large common denominator with his role in the movie, which will make the movie doubly reminiscent of him," a netizen said about the film that opens close to the Lunar New Year holiday season in early February.

Crime-action movie "Drug War," starring Kim, also opens in theaters this year, but a release date has not been set. The actor, who portrayed various heroes and villains over almost 20 years of acting, plays a drug dealer in China.

Kim, 45, died in October after his Mercedes SUV hit the rear of a Grandeur sedan, crashed into the wall of an I-Park apartment in Samseong-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, rolled down steps to the apartment block and overturned. He was taken to Konkuk University Hospital but died.

Police said the National Forensic Service found no trace of alcohol or drugs in the veteran actor's body. The state crime lab said it found nothing other than a small amount of antihistamine in the toxicology test.

The investigation reaffirmed the preliminary conclusion that Kim died of a severe head injury inflicted in the accident.
