Rain reports instigators of malicious rumors to the police

After a false rumor made the rounds on the Internet, singer Rain reported the instigators of the rumor to the Gangnam Police Station on charges of libel and defamation, 'Entertainment Relay' reported.

A netizen had released a photo of a naked man online recently, claiming that it was a photo of Rain that was taken from the phone of his girlfriend, Kim Tae Hee. This picture, along with the description, spread like lightning on the Internet.

"Rain received a notice from his agency on the 13th, saying that there was a malicious rumor spreading on the Internet," his lawyer said. "Looking into the case, we discovered that they had no bearing on the truth. We decided that these rumors were of a malicious nature, and filed a criminal complaint on the basis of spreading false information and defamation."

"Including the original source, we reported approximately 20~30 people," they said. "If the case becomes clear that libel was the intent, the punishment can range from up to seven years in prison or 50 million won in fines."

With the on-going case of the spread of a fake nude photo, Rain has filed charges against the original leaker, as well as approximately 30 other netizens who helped spread the leak, of the photo.

On a broadcast of MBC’s Section TV which aired on November 16th, a report on Rain’s recent nude photo rumour was mentioned during a segment titled, “Rain Taking Legal Actions.”

Section TV reported that the Gangnam Police Department’s Cyber Investigation Team received the filed charges along with the purpose and claim of the lawsuit, which is Distribution of Falsehood as well as Defamation of Character.

Currently, as revealed on Section TV, the star and his representatives have sued the original leaker and roughly 30 other individuals who have been caught for redistributing the said photo and rumour onto other online communities and platforms.

Rain’s representing attorney, Kim Nam Heung, stated during an interview with Section TV, “On the 13th, through Rain’s agency, we became aware of the vicious rumours that were spreading on the internet and verified that they were all false. We came to the conclusion that the rumours were all ill-natured and filed for Distribution of Falsehood and Defamation of Character.”

Attorney Kim Nam Heung continued, “Including the original leaker, an additional 20 to 30 other individuals were charged and sued. If it is revealed that these netizens were intentionally redistributing these false rumours in an attempt to slander Rain, they may be facing up to a maximum of seven years in prison or a fine of 50 million won (approximately $45,442 USD).”

Kim Nam Heung also stated, “We plan to take strong legal actions and will decide the severity of punishment after observing the whole situation and lawsuit as it proceeds.”

Last week, Korean pop star Rain was the subject of a new nude photo scandal, and the singer is reportedly taking the matter very seriously.

The photo in question is a fake, according to both Rain and his record label CUBE DC, and the persons responsible for sharing it online are now the subjects of a lawsuit brought on by the singer.

Rain, whose real name is Jung Ji Hoon, has reportedly filed charges against the person allegedly responsible for the original image as well as up to 30 others said to have further spread the image online.

Kim Nam Heung, the attorney representing Rain in the proceedings, was interviewed by Korean television media Section TV regarding the matter for the November 16 broadcast in a segment titled Rain Taking Legal Action.

"On November 13, through Rain's agency, we became aware of the vicious rumors spreading on the internet and verified that they were all false," said Kim. "We came to the conclusion that the rumors we all ill-natured and filed charges of Distribution of Falsehood and Defamation of Character."

"Including the original leaker, an additional 20 to 30 individuals were charged and sued," the attorney added.

"We plan to take strong legal action and will decide the severity of the punishments after observing the whole situation and lawsuit as it proceeds," explained Kim who also said that those charged may face a maximum sentence of seven years in prison or a fine of up to 50 million won (or roughly $45,500 USD) if the accused are found to have distributed the photo in an attempt slander the pop star.

Last week, it was rumored that Rain's girlfriend, actress Kim Tae Hee, had lost her cell phone and that a naked image of the singer had been found within its contents. The photo quickly spread though online fan cafes and the popular Korean messaging app Kakao Talk.

The first film to be adapted from Amy Siu-Haan Cheung's classic novel, For Love Or Money, seems to suggest that fan frenzy can turn a mediocre production into a box-office hit.

Based on the Hong Kong best-selling author's book of the same name, the movie has fetched a total of 54.8 million yuan ($8.9 million) in box-office revenues in the first week since its release on Nov 7, according to 58921.com, a box-office tracking website.

But, the romance, featuring a somewhat vicious version of Cinderella's story, got a low reception on a dozen major film review websites, such as douban.com (with a score of 5.2 points on a scale of 10) and mtime.com (with 5.5 points).

Most reviewers have criticized the stereotypical storyline and coarse shooting of the movie, which is the first feature-length attempt by TV series director Gao Xixi.

Gao, 52, has shot to fame for a series of epic TV productions, including the new version of The Romance of Three Kingdoms.

"Undoubtedly, the only highlights in the movie are lead actor Rain and actress Liu Yifei. The ticket is worthy just for admiring their pretty faces on the big screen," a blogger wrote on douban.com. The comment was reposted on the site.

Rain, the stage name of South Korean A-list actor and singer Jung Ji Hoon, plays the character of a handsome artist, who falls in love with a café owner, Liu’s role.

The romance is revealed as a delicately schemed trap for the artist, as his mother hires Liu to lure her son and then break his heart for a reason, "you have no money", in an attempt to force the artist to quit his painting dream and take to his family business.

During the 10-city promotional tour for the movie across the country earlier this month, Rain's fans traveled with their idol and even purchased all of the tickets at a cinema hall to support their star. Some fans posted on Baidu Tieba, an online forum, that they watched the film several times.

Liu’s fans weren't behind. They have been posting positive comments about the movie on Sina Weibo, China's equivalent of micro blog Twitter. The movie topic trended for a while too.

"If numerous fans praise a film and make it an Internet sensation, it will raise non-fans' interest in the production and lead them to the cinemas," said Zheng Ye, a veteran showbiz critic.

He cites the examples of how low-budget movies, such as Mysterious Island and My Kingdom, were tailored for the fans of its lead pair to win box-office revenues.

Previously, an alleged picture of Hallyu star Rain showering in the nude circulated the internet and the celebrity vehemently denied that this was him.  A digital forensics expert on the November 19 episode of SBS's 'One Night of TV Entertainment' backed this claim by comparing pictures of Rain with the pictures of the man showering.  After an analysis, the expert claimed they appeared to be two different men.

The photo in question had been circulating the internet with the comment, "Rain's girlfriend Kim Tae Hee lost her phone, and his naked photo has been leaked."  However, the agency had stated, "Those are not pictures of Rain and Kim Tae Hee has not lost her cell phone."

 

Now, Rain's side has filed a charge against the netizen who had circulated the false picture.  The police remarked, "We are not sure of the first person who circulated [the picture] and are currently investigating into the first person who posted it onto a blog."

 

 

Additionally, 'One Night of TV Entertainment' got ahold of an expert who could analyze whether it was really Rain in the picture.  The specialist said, "For identification purposes, I usually look at the ears. The ears play a big part in distinguishing.  In the picture, there are no earlobes, but Rain's earlobes are thick and big.

 

The form of his eyebrows are also different for sure.  In conclusion, this is not Rain.  The fact that the eyes are covered in the picture means there is a 90% difference from this particular person."
