class="content-title"Celebrities Receive Special Treatment in the Military? January 8, 2013

After the public outcry regarding Rain’s preferential treatment because he’s able to go on dates with actress Kim Tae Hee when he’s supposed to be on duty, there is increasing interest in the special treatment received by all entertainer soldiers. Recently, an online community forum posted several pictures under the title “This is the actual condition of entertainment soldiers” and is quickly being circulated around the internet. Inside the pictures, the celebrities currently serving as entertainment soldiers are mosaiced to protect their star image. Rather than being dressed in military uniform and going through physical training, they are seen in comfortable wear and taking a break near the sea. Netizens who saw the pictures commented, “Huh.. preferential treatment for celebrities,” “Dang, so what if they’re celebrities.. that’s too much,” “The real life of entertainment soldiers.. it’s a serious problem.” Source:soompi

The Ministry of National Defense has decided to give Rain a one-week probation. The global star has been in the news lately for issues concerning holidays and favorable treatment for celebrities in the military. He’ll be confined to the army base for one week of self-reflection. The Ministry of Defense stated, “After a decision by the disciplinary committee of his unit, Rain will be confined to his [barracks and the army base] for seven days of [self-reflection and introspection]… He violated regulations by having private meetings while on official duty.” After photos of Rain on a date with actress Kim Tae Hee surfaced online earlier this year, many messaged the ministry’s website calling for the star to be disciplined. Rain, who enlisted in mandatory military service on October 11, 2011, will return to civilian life this coming July.

He must have learned his lessons and be more cautious in his future endeavors and life's challenges.  I've read that the probation starts today (Jan. 9) till 15Jan.

(LEAD) Singer Rain disciplined for dating during service

(ATTN: UPDATEDS with more details in paras 2-3; ADDS comments by vice minister from para 8)

SEOUL, Jan. 8 (Yonhap) -- A military disciplinary committee said Tuesday it has ordered K-pop star Rain to not leave his unit for one week, the lightest form of military discipline that can be administered, over dating a top TV actress while on official military duty.

The move comes after the 30-year-old singer, who was spotted dating actress Kim Tae-hee while he was on leave last month, faced strong backlash from the public over the special treatment of celebrities while they fulfill their mandatory military service. All able-bodied South Korean men are conscripted to serve roughly two years in the armed forces.

class="art_title"Rain Disciplined for Bunking Off Military Duties

2013010900703_0.jpg

Singer and actor Rain has been grounded for one week as punishment for bunking off military duties to meet his girlfriend, actress Kim Tae-hee, the Defense Ministry said Tuesday.

The decision was made by a disciplinary committee at the Army entertainment corps, to which Rain belongs. A ministry spokesman said Rain's offense was failing to obey a senior officer. "Rain was told not to have private meetings while on military duty and is being punished for failing to obey the order," the spokesman added.

It was the lightest available punishment.

According to the ministry, Rain left his base citing official duties on Nov. 23, Dec. 2 and 9 to work on a song for a military event at a recording studio in Gangnam. On all three occasions he met up with Kim between 9 and 10 p.m. after working on his music and apparently was dropped off in front of his base by Kim's car.

Altogether the star has spent over 90 days off base since he started his military service, vastly more than any ordinary conscript could dream of.

RAIN Placed on Seven Day Probation

20130102_rain_holidays2.jpgThe Ministry of National Defense has come to a decision over their investigation of celebrity soldier, Rain…that decision is seven-day probation.

The decision was made on January 8th because he violated the decree on military service.

The military of defense determined that Rain was involved in post-production editing for a new song in Cheongdam on three occasions (November 23, December 2nd and 9th). However, after his work was completed he met with his girlfriend, Kim Tae Hee privately and returned to the army in her car thus violating the decree.

Rain Meted Out Light Punishment For Dating Actress

By JONATHAN M. HICAP January 9, 2013

MANILA, Philippines - Korean pop star Rain has been meted out punishment of one-week probation by the Ministry of National Defense following media reports showing that he dated actress Kim Tae-hee.

The singer, who is completing his mandatory military service, violated a military rule that prohibits enlisted citizens from having private meetings.

A Korean entertainment website posted pictures of the singer and the actress together.

However, his dating came under fire from Koreans, who said he was being given preferential treatment because he was a celebrity.

The light punishment a disciplinary committee imposed is that Rain will be confined to barracks for one week for self-reflection.

Reports said Rain dated Kim Tae-hee on Nov. 23, Dec. 2 and Dec. 9, the dates in which he was outside the military base on official business.

"Kim [Tae-hee] apparently drove him back to his base in the ministry compound every time, and Rain reported back at around 10:30 p.m.," according to the Chosun Ilbo.

The issue of Rain's days spent outside the base also became an issue.

The Chosun Ilbo said Rain took 94 days of leave or a fifth of his 450 days of service and had 28 days of regular holidays.

Another report said Rain had 44 days of overnight leaves to fulfill his official duties and 27 days as his vacation and to perform in shows as part of his duties as an entertainment soldier.

After the photos of Rain and Kim Tae-hee were published, the actress' agency confirmed that the two were dating.

It was reported that the actress left South Korea a few days ago to celebrate her father's birthday.

Rain and Kim Tae-hee are two of Korea's most popular celebrities.

The date controversy surfaced as Rain is just months away from completing his military service. He will be discharged on July 10.

[08-Jan-13][straitstimes]Korean pop icon Rain confined to barracks to 'repent'

Posted by memo-rain on January 9, 2013

SEOUL (AFP) - South Korean pop icon Rain has been confined to barracks for a week, the defence ministry said on Tuesday, after his dating put him on the wrong side of the country's strict military service rules.

"Under a decision by the disciplinary commission of his unit, Rain will be confined to his barracks to spend seven days of repentance," a defence ministry spokesman said.

The 30-year-old singer is a little over halfway through the two-year military service that is mandatory for all able-bodied South Korean men.

The country's well-oiled celebrity gossip machine went into overdrive last week when it was confirmed that Rain had begun dating Kim Tae Hee, 32, a TV drama star with a massive following in Japan.

But fan excitement was tempered by questions over how the couple had managed numerous reported dates. During their military service men are given little free time, even for family visits.

"He breached regulations against having private meetings while on official duty," the ministry spokesman said.

The punishment was one of the lightest options open to the disciplinary committee.

Rain, whose real name is Jung Ji Hoon, is one of the biggest names in the world of K-pop, which commands a huge following in South Korea, across much of Asia and beyond.

After tabloid pictures of his dates with Kim emerged, the defence ministry's website was bombarded with messages calling for him to be disciplined.

Some suggested he be forced to repeat his military service like the Gangnam Style star Psy, who was made to serve twice after it emerged he had furthered his showbiz interests during his first stint.

Military service is taken extremely seriously in South Korea, which remains technically at war with North Korea because the 1950-53 Korean War ended with a ceasefire rather than a peace treaty.

Apart from those with physical disabilities, exemptions are rare and anyone refusing to serve - for moral or religious reasons - faces an automatic jail term.

Celebrities are frequently caught attempting to evade military service for fear they might be forgotten by their fans while in uniform.

Just as he was about to be called up in 2002, Korean-American pop singer Steve Yoo gave up his Korean nationality and became a naturalised United States citizen.

The South Korean government considered it an act of desertion and he was deported and banned from returning for life.

class="entry-title"Rain’s military controversy causes future celebrity recruits to rethink their decision

January 11, 2013

Celebrities who were considering entering the army as celebrity recruits are now rethinking their decision after Rain‘s controversy.

The label of a famous vocal group recently stated, “Three of the members have to go to the army right now. They are considering going to the army and not as a celebrity recruit. It’s not even that celebrity recruits have it easy, but taking that position is controversial and there are many pitfalls in doing so. They’re going to have a hard time hearing things such as, ‘they just have it easy’ at the army.

Another label of a solo male artist stated, “We don’t know what branch of the military he’s going to go in, but he won’t go as a celebrity recruit. We think it is the wisest to just go quietly for 2 years.

In the past, male celebrities used to avoid the army, and even though some would enlist as a celebrity recruit they would be universally accepted just for going to the army. However, after the recent controversies, celebrities are under more scrutiny and they are judged on what they do and how they perform in the army as well. To the public, going as a celebrity recruit seems like they didn’t really enlist properly but just had their celebrity life extended into the army.

20130110 국방FM 위문열차 공연을 앞두고
2013.01.12

credit:huda@rain-cloud.co.kr

Translation of an article by the writer of DEMA FM Consolatory Train Programme

Upcoming Consolatory Train Performance

The Consolatory Train Performance gives a special strength that cannot be found in other performances. Compared to girl groups, the DEMA members received even more passionate cheers from the soldiers who packed the seats.

Sergeant Park Hyo Shin singing “Snow flower” without musical accompaniment all year long at the request of the soldiers. Corporal Jung Jihoon bringing joy to the soldiers with his passionate performance, and convincing and begging the commander to give a special day off as gift to the soldiers. The Untouchable team running around the stage until they were wet through and through. The DEMA members did their best and the soldiers chanted their names in one voice to cheer for them. Gaining energy from the passionate response, the DEMA members gave an even more passionate performance.

The duty of the DEMA members is not just to boost the morale of the soldiers. They also perform the role of bringing our army and the citizens together. Through regional consolatory train performance, they gave unforgettable memories to residents who live nearby. During Expo, over 30,000 people attended the K-pop festival in order to watch the performance of the DEMA members. Through their participation in local activities and national events which bring civilians and army together, DEMA members help create a positive image on our nation’s army.

But recently all their efforts were destroyed as if they were nothing by two words: ”special privileges”. The memories jointly made by them and the soldiers are fading away and this is sad.

If one only looks at the number of leave days and sleep out days of the DEMA members and compare them with the leave days of ordinary soldiers, it’s inevitable to see that DEMA members have more days in terms of number. The sleep out days because they have to rehearse for their stage and because they have to do broadcasting programmes, and the sleep out days when they have to go to regional army bases to perform Consolatory Train, were all included as their leave days. They were labeled as receiving “special privileges” and were being criticized. It is unfair to them.

Especially, due to production reasons, the stages of Consolatory Train look similar week by week. To avoid this repetitive feeling DEMA members have been requested to prepare new songs and new stages. We really feel bad that they have to accommodate our request under such difficult circumstances.

The DEMA members willingly swap their weekends and leave days for Consolatory Train performance and radio broadcast programmes, as well as participating in various activities. This is because they are fully aware of their duty, the help they will give in boosting the morale of the soldiers, and they are proud of their roles.

In 2013 the Consolatory Train will continue to go to various army bases. The DEMA members will continue to go on stage. When the soldiers watch them on stage, let’s hope they do not see these DEMA members as celebrities living a different military life than their own. Rather, let’s hope they will see them as comrades, and continue to enjoy their stages passionately like they always have.

[Quick Guest Review] Korean Movie "R2B: Return to Base"

  2013/01/11

photo272994.jpg

Rain returns to Korea with a big blockbuster starring in "R2B: Return to Base", a remake of Shin Sang-Ok's film "The Red Muffler". It tells the story of a hot shot pilot, Captain Jung Tae-Yoon played by Rain who is sent back to the force after a dangerous stunt with the Elite Black Eagles during an air show.

Rain does a good job at portraying the cocky pilot. There isn't anything too outstanding about his performance but he does get you to laugh a few times. He is also supported by a great cast who all play their parts well. One in particular was Kim Sung-soo. This was the first time I have seen him in a film and he played the part of the old academy senior and flight leader. I immediately liked him from his first scene with Rain. All the actors made you believe they were all once close friends.

One thing though, this film is set up as an action film. The trailer gives you two minutes from one of the plane battles and you expect to see a lot more of this. However, the scene they show is one of the two battles that take place in the film. The film seems to focus more on Tae-Yoon trying to woo over his mechanic played by Sin Se-kyeong and as well as beating his rivals in the air games. Still, the movie is a lot of fun and I don't think you will be disappointed.

If you are looking for a fun movie or are a big fan of Rain, then this is the film for you. Rain's performance in "R2B" is a huge step-up from his last role of playing a ninja. I give it 3 out of 5 stars and will probably make its way to my movie collection.

Available on Blu-ray and DVD from YESASIA
