RYOO Seung-wan Remakes Short into Feature

[by Nigel D’Sa (KOFIC) - 2008-01-18]

Director RYOO Seung-wan has cast brother RYOO Seung-beom and actress KONG Hyo-jin in an expanded remake of his 35-minute short film Dajjimawa Lee (2000), originally made exclusively to screen on the internet. Actor LIM Won-hee (Le Grand Chef), who also starred in the original, will join RYOO and KONG in the updated version.

Dajjimawa Lee became a sensation when it was released over the internet, receive more than a million views. The film followed on the success of director RYOO’s low budget astonishing debut Die Bad, a US $65 000 action film with gripping if gritty visuals and an adroitly woven plot.

Dajjimawa was intended as a parody of / homage to Korean action films of the 70s. The term dajjimawa was often used in the film industry to describe action scenes. Dialogue in RYOO’s spoof was often taken verbatim from genre films of that era, such as “Kyung-ah, there’s nothing do. How ‘bout a little kiss?” RYOO reportedly was also deeply influenced by the films of cult-auteur KIM Ki-young.

The new version, produced by Owe-yoo-nae-kang, appears to have sidelined RYOO’s period-set zombie action feature Yacha for the time being.

‘Dachimawa Lee,’ Ryoo Seung-wan’s spy spoof

By Mark Pollard • June 24, 2008

Ryoo Seung-wan, director of THE CITY OF VIOLENCE, is back with a new movie and it’s something a little different. DACHIMAWA LEE is a spy-action spoof of ’60s and ’70s Korean cinema, right down to the exaggerated acting, crazed martial arts action and post-production dubbing. The film is based on Ryoo’s first work, a short film produced in 1998.

Under Japanese Imperialism, a Korean national treasure known as the Golden Buddha is stolen. The interim government appoints legendary Korean spy Agent Dachimawa Lee(Lim Won-hee) to recover the fabled statue and reveal the plot behind the theft. The first attempted operation fails miserably with Agent Lee losing both the statue and his sexy partner. He discovers that he was betrayed by an insider. Fueled by a desire for revenge, he faces off with the shadowy figure behind the plot on a snowy field in Switzerland where the statue is believed to be hidden.

The film co-stars Park Si-yeon, Kong Hyo-jin and Ryoo Seung-bum (CRYING FIST). Lim Won-hee began his acting career in Ryoo’s original short and is reprising the role for the feature film. Since 1998 he has appeared in numerous films including NO BLOOD NO TEARS and CRYING FIST.

A teaser trailer below is apparently not footage from the movie but a marketing gag to use the character to spoof the James Bond franchise. If the polish on this teaser is any indication, the movie itself is going to offer some serious eye candy.

"Dachimawa Lee" opens August 14th (S. Korea)

Posted by luna6

Likely the second most anticipated South Korean movie for summer 2008, “Dachimawa Lee” has made August 14th its official opening date. What’s so special about “Dachimawa Lee” you may ask? Well, the movie is directed by none other than Seung-wan Ryoo, maker of such films as “City of Violence,” “Crying Fist,” “No Blood No Tears,” “Arahan,” and “Die Bad.” There’s also Won-hie Lim (Le Grand Chef) playing a suave (Mike Myers type?) secret agent. If the thought of Won-hie Lim doesn’t wet your appetite, well the supporting cast surely will.

Supporting cast features a troika of lovely South Korean actresses: Hyo-jin Kong (Happiness/M/Family Ties), the lovely Si-yeon Park (The Fox Family/A Love), and the wild and crazy Bo-ra Hwang (Shim’s Family/Radio Days). You might also to think to yourself whats a Seung-wan Ryoo film without the appearance of his brother Seung-beom Ryoo? Well fear not, Seung-beom Ryoo (Radio Days, Crying Fist, Arahan) also appears in the movie in a supporting role.

“Dachimawa Lee” was originally released as a short internet film back in 1998, directed by Seung-wan Ryoo and featuring Won-hie Lim and Seung-beom Ryoo. The 2008 version promises a lot of summertime fun & action on the level of “The Good, The Bad, and The Weird.” More about this film will be posted closer to release date.

Ryoo Seung-Wan Parodies Bond In The First DACHIMAWA LEE Teaser

Posted by Todd Brown

Oh, man ... I’m totally of two minds on this. On one side there is the fact that Cannes award winning Crying Fist director Ryoo Seung-Wan’s period set espionage-action-comedy-martial arts flick Dachimawa Lee is an incredibly vibrant and colorful piece of work, a playful and unique exercise in style, and I just hate that the first teaser for the film shows absolutely no footage that actually appears in the film itself. Instead they’ve opted to shoot a mostly unrelated gag. On the other side there’s the fact that the gag - an extended riff on James Bond - is pretty funny and very well executed. I’ll let you have this one, Ryoo, just make sure you show us something from the actual film soon, okay?

First Image From Ryoo Seung-Wan’s Feature Length DACHIMAWA LEE!

Posted by Todd Brown

DachimawaLee_3.jpg

Long before he began turning heads around the globe with films such as the Cannes award-winning Crying Fist, South Korea’s Ryoo Seung-Wan turned heads at home with an energetic short film titled Dachimawa Lee. Rarely seen in the western world it introduced Korean audiences to Ryoo’s kinetic style and served notice that a major new talent had arrived in the country. Ryoo likes to be busy and so when his period zombie martial arts picture Yacha took longer than expected to get off the ground he opted to return to his roots and expand that early short out into a feature. Slated for a late summer or early fall release, the feature version of Dachimawa Lee is being shot now and the first image has arrived.

<<<Under Japanese imperialism, Korean national treasure Golden Buddha is stolen. Finally Some Action from Ryu Seung-Wan's 다찌마와 리 (Dachimawa Lee)

Posted by . X . at 7:51pm.

Oh oh, the action kid is back. If you remember, right after Ryu Seung-Wan released 죽거나 혹은 나쁘거나 (Die Bad) in 2000, he joined an Internet project along with Jang Jin and Kim Ji-Woon. The idea was to make one short film each, and exclusively distribute them online, even though eventually they found their way to DVD. The other two were a success as well, and Kim Ji-Woon's 커밍아웃 (Coming Out) in particular is quite good. But Ryu's 다찌마와 리 (Dachimawa Lee) was just straight up cult material, right from the beginning. A parody of just about everything Ryu grew up watching (the machismo kitsch of 70s Korean action films, Jackie Chan, Shaw Brothers, etc.) the little short film is now getting the feature treatment, courtesy of our good old action kid, who's apparently shelving 야차 (Yacha) for the time being. And looking at the cast, it seems Ryu has signed some of the most interesting youngsters in the biz, including Gong Hyo-Jin, Hwang Bo-Ra, and the shockingly improved Park Si-Yeon. Wrapping up the cast are obviously the Ryu Seung-Wan regulars, Im Won-Hee, Ahn Gil-Gang and Ryu Seung-Beom on top. This trailer finally shows some footage, and it looks deliriously over the top, with some badass action.

Film will release on August 14. You can find the trailer below the break. And you can bet this will get monster coverage.

Wedding bells for Ryoo Seung-beom and Kong Hyo-jin not until after November.

20080721-57.jpg

The star couple has been in the spot light for a long time. Even though the fans are waiting for the wedding dates, it seems it won't be anytime during this year.

The two stars have been very open in their dating through vacations and church going together. However, Ryoo Seung-beom will be a special guest actor in the movie "Dajimawa Lee" directed by his own brother Ryoo Seung-hwan. This action movie is produced in a huge scale so Ryoo Seung-beom will be helping out his brother in this big project starting this August.

If his special casting is definite, he will be filming until this November. Ryoo will be concentrating on this movie, so there won't be any news of wedding bells ringing.

Ryoo's part will be as a gangster who in the end comes to aid justice. He will also be acting with a Ho-nam dialect, thus it will a new challenge.
