*** The movie looks good. JJH will be playing a private investigator who is accused of murder and his female partner now is Choi Sung Eung to help clear his name. She took over the role after Han So Hee bowed out last summer due to health concerns. Again super excited for this one for JJH after his last drama "Jirisan". Not familiar with the female lead, though so, I checked her on Google, out of curiosity.  :Ohboy3:

*** Finally..............I was able to watch continuously this time his latest drama "Jirisan".   The drama has maintained a good amount of suspense and the chemistry between all the characters is worth watching! It’s a happy-ending since the finale brought together all the loose ends of the mystery as Seo Yi-kang (Jun Ji-hyun) and the rest of the characters uncover the killer.  Watching the drama, I was able to learn something about mountaineers. Unfortunately, “Jirisan” is not available for online streaming on Netflix. Also, too sad that the ratings have gradually declined in the following few episodes and have not been able to bounce back since. Overall, the setting and plot of “Jirisan” are refreshing.  :kaching3:

12 Great Gateway K-Dramas To Introduce To Your Friends

Trying to get that friend into the wonderful world of K-dramas? There are a lot out there, and one is bound to suck your friends in. All it really takes is one good drama! We’d visited this topic before about K-dramas to introduce to your friends, and although it is a solid list, here are 12 more to add.

4. “Kingdom”

kingdom-.jpeg

“Kingdom” is the hit series starring Joo Ji Hoon as Lee Chang and Bae Doona as Seo Bi. It’s a zombie drama that is set in the Joseon period, which sounds pretty awesome. Joo Ji Hoon is crown prince Lee Chang who is trying to find out why he is not allowed to visit his father. In order to find out, he goes out to look for the doctor who is treating his father. It’s on this journey where he encounters Seo Bi and the storm of zombies that are slowly taking over the country.

“Kingdom” did a great job of being entertaining to those who do not even like the zombie or horror genre. Set in the backdrop of a historical setting, it is thoroughly entertaining to see how the characters make do against the zombies without having any heavy artillery. It’s a script that hasn’t been done before and one that people will appreciate. You also have the added pleasure of being on the edge of your seat throughout most of the series, wondering how everything will turn out. It’s undoubtedly a good watch for any of your friends who will give it a shot!

*** There is a new trend in the K-drama industry in which now many popular series end with just 12 episodes. Before it would end with 16 episodes or even 18 episodes at times. However, I noticed that there has been a change in this trend as they are closing with just 12.  The change in viewing patterns started with the popularity of Netflix and is also changing the TV drama production. According to industry experts, the company that started this short drama trend is the global video streaming platform Netflix. The original Netflix drama that first gained popularity in Korea was the drama 'Kingdom.' The first season of the drama only had six episodes but gained immense popularity. I love this new trend now. I love short EP dramas. (12) is pretty good & perfect for me. Long EPs K-dramas get draggy & slow-paced most of the time. Short one makes the plot much easier to digest. I think it's a good trend. A really good writer may be able to adjust their story and pacing accordingly.

Soompi & Viki Staff Talk: What Was The 1st Drama That Got You Into K-Drama World?

Along with our recent feature on great gateway K-dramas to introduce to friends, some of our staff members took time to reflect on which K-dramas first got us hooked (and eventually here at Soompi and Viki).

Here are the stories of our K-drama-loving crew:

Ginny: “Princess Hours

princess-hours.jpeg

The first drama that got me into K-drama world is “Princess Hours,” a 2006 series starring Yoon Eun Hye, Joo Ji Hoon, Kim Jung Hoon, and Song Ji Hyo. It is a live action television adaptation of the manhwa and set in an alternate world where the Korean monarchy still exists. I cried when Shin Chae Kyung (Yoon Eun Hye) and Lee Shin (Joo Ji Hoon) couple was in crisis and felt for Lee Yool (Kim Jung Hoon) when he confessed his love to Shin Chae Kyung. When Shin Chae Kyung and Lee Shin fell in love with each other, I was happy for them like they are my own friends. I continuously listened to “Perhaps Love” and “Ice Pond” from the drama’s soundtrack as the songs vividly recreated the scenes in my memory. After falling in love with “Princess Hours,” I started watching more K-dramas to feel that emotional connection again.

Watch “Princess Hours” below:

I like it too but I think it depends in the story and how it's written. RomComs like Business Proposal feels right with 12 episodes. The mystery time-loop of Reset at 15 episodes (but at only 40mins each) is perfect too. But some sprawling epics need a higher episode count though. The key I guess is in the writing.

9 Korean Movies We Wish Could Be Made Into K-Dramas

Sometimes when we watch a Korean movie, we wish it could be made into a K-drama. The reason for this is because it’s so good that we want to see it drawn out into a long series so we can cherish what was great about the movie. Films that have a lovable and charming cast, a compelling storyline, and sometimes even the cinematography make you hope for more. Here are nine movies that we wish could be made into K-dramas.

4. “Along With the Gods: The Two Worlds

along-with-the-gods.jpeg

Taking place in the afterlife, three grim reapers, played by Ha Jung Woo, Kim Hyang Gi, and Joo Ji Hoon, guide a firefighter named Kim Ja Hong (Cha Tae Hyun), helping him for the next 49 days. They are to pass seven trials within those days, and if they are successful, he will be reincarnated. The grim reapers will also be one step closer into being reincarnated themselves.

“Along With the Gods: The Two Worlds” has such a unique concept, which is probably why it was so successful. The actors and the production value were all impeccably planned, making it one of the highest grossing movies of all time. Seeing this particular movie made into a K-drama series would be the first of its kind, and one that would keep viewers on the edge of their seats.

12 “Enemies To Lovers” K-Drama Couples With Fiery Chemistry

We all love this trope. In K-dramas, when a man and woman meet and absolutely despise each other, they are quick to discover that they may actually have feelings for each other. There is a fine line between love and hate after all, am I right?

This trope is always successful in bringing all the feels as we’re able to see the cold-hearted OTP turn from being hateful and angry towards each other to being warm and loving. Here are 12 “enemies to lovers” K-drama couples that exude intense chemistry.

1. “Hyena”

hyena-drama.jpg

In “Hyena,” Yoon Hee Jae (Joo Ji Hoon) falls in love with Jung Geum Ja (Kim Hye Soo) and makes it pretty obvious that he wants to be with her. What Hee Jae doesn’t know is that it’s all part of Geum Ja’s master plan. Hee Jae is a lawyer at an elite law firm and Geum Ja, who is also a lawyer, is trying to do whatever she can to get high profile cases so that she can make more money. The two realize that they’re total opposites and are better off staying away from each other, that is, until a specific case forces them to work together.

This is a noona drama that really doesn’t feel like one. There are not many noona K-drama main leads that can pull this off. Joo Ji Hoon’s mature acting, character, and aura definitely made us a believer in his connection and feelings for Kim Hye Soo’s Jang Geum Ja. There is so much tension and angst between them whenever they are on screen. This chemistry carried the series, making it one of the best of the year. Just look at the way Joo Ji Hoon looks at Kim Hye Soo!

Some of the Best K-Dramas with storylines based on arranged and contract Marriages

1652423132-arngmrg.png

What drama could provide you with a mix of heart-fluttering scenes, some parts of heart-wrenching moments, and a whole lot of unresolved tension and pining? Arranged and contract marriage-themed dramas can surely satisfy what you look forward to in a drama!

No matter what the setup is, may it be mutually decided to be arranged, something they originally wanted to go against, or marriage out of convenience, the trope still hits hard for those who enjoy it. The trope isn't even limited to present-day and slice-of-life concepts. It is heavily influential and instrumental in sageuks as politically involved arranged marriages are much more frequent.

4. Princess Hours

Main Leads: Ju Ji Hoon as Crown Prince Lee Shin, Yoon Eun Hye as Shin Chae Kyeong

Summary: Set in an alternative universe where Korea maintains monarchy, Crown Prince Lee Shin is forced to marry Shin Chae Kyeong, a commoner to whom he was betrothed by his grandfather, the late Emperor Seongjo, in an agreement with the girl's grandfather. They face a series of struggles aside from their reluctance towards each other, including the fight for the throne and even each other's affection.

*** HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Oppa!  :heart3:

Happy Joo Ji Hoon Day: Looking back at the astounding career of ‘Kingdom’ and ‘Princess Hours’ star

On this joyous occasion, let’s take a look at the dazzling career of experienced actor Joo Ji Hoon.

jjh_main.png?width=752&format=webp&t=pvo

Joo Ji Hoon (born May 16, 1982) is a South Korean actor and model. He had various bit parts in television dramas, but it was in 2006's romantic comedy ‘Princess Hours’, based on the manhwa ‘Goong’, that he achieved breakthrough. The drama was a hit domestically with a peak rating of 28.3%, and internationally across Asia, catapulting Joo Ji Hoon into Korean Wave stardom.

He played the role of Crown Prince Lee Shin, a smug, indifferent and insensitive man, who is actually lonely on the inside. After getting rejected by his girlfriend Min Hyo Rin (Song Ji Hyo), he decides to proceed with his arranged marriage to Shin Chae Kyeong (Yoon Eun Hye). Though he was initially annoyed by her naivete and enthusiasm, he gradually begins to open his heart to her. This role won him Best New Actor award at the MBC Drama Awards along with his co-star Yoon Eun Hye.

In March 2007, Ju starred in KBS2' revenge drama ‘The Devil’, opposite Uhm Tae Woong and Shin Min Ah. The same month, he received the New Asian Star award at the 1st Astar TV Drama Awards for his performance in ‘Princess Hours’ and ‘The Devil’. Joo Ji Hoon's film debut was in ‘Antique; (2008), based on the manga ‘Antique Bakery’.The film was invited to the 59th Berlin International Film Festival. He then reunited with ‘The Devil’ co-star Shin Min Ah in the romantic comedy ‘The Naked Kitchen’.

He made his film debut in China with ‘Love Suspicion’, a romantic thriller. In 2014, he was paired up with Ji Sung and Lee Kwang Soo in ‘Confession’, a neo-noir film that brutally explores the aftermath of three men's friendship after the death of one's mother. From 2017 to 2018, Joo Ji Hoon starred in the two-part fantasy epic ‘Along With the Gods’. The film was the second highest grossing film in South Korea, and Ju became known for his role as Haewonmaek.

In 2019, Joo Ji Hoon made a comeback to the small screen with two television series; Netflix's zombie period drama ‘Kingdom’, and MBC's fantasy legal drama ‘Item’. In the former drama, he played the role of Lee Chang, the Crown Prince of Joseon and heir presumptive to the throne. Although he is the King's only child, his late mother was unmarried, meaning that a son born from the Queen Consort would become the heir apparent and new Crown Prince. Suspicious of the illness afflicting the King, and his recent lack of public appearances, his investigation not only uncovers a dangerous plague that brings the dead back to life, but also a plot to betray the Royal family and usurp him as heir. Without a doubt, this was one of his best works. One, because it was great to see him back in a period drama but in a more matured and action-heavy way.

In 2020, he reprised his role in the second season of ‘Kingdom’, and starred in the legal drama ‘Hyena’ where he played the role of Yoon Hee Jae, a pedigreed and elite lawyer who is confident in his abilities. He possesses a brilliant mind that is wrapped around his ego, but he misses the grit of Geum Ja (Kim Hye Soo) and gets outsmarted by her on many occasions. Definitely an extremely underrated role of his, he did an amazing job as a lawyer with a comedic streak in him.

2021 was the year he starred in the awaited tvN drama ‘Jirisan’ alongside ‘Kingdom’ co-star Jun Ji Hyun. It was supposed to be the best drama, seeing the star-studded cast and the production value but the story didn’t hold up. This was not his best work but we hope to see him in new dramas in the coming year!

*** According to OSEN, Ju Ji Hoon has recently decided to hop on the production of the new drama "Dominant Species "(literal title). Per his agency, he’s positively reviewing the offer. Currently, he is filming the movie "Kidnapped" with Ha Jung Woo. If he does join the show, he’ll start shooting "Dominant Species" in September. It tells the story of superior genes, viruses, and a world where people ingest food as pills. The show will most likely be released on an OTT platform, and Ace Factory will be producing. Besides this movie, Ju Ji Hoon will greet the audiences with several movies that pushed back their release due to the pandemic, including Silence, Kidnapped, and Gentleman. Wahhh..... so many to look forward to for him.   :Fist1:
