“Descendants of the Sun” Sold to Japan in Biggest Deal in 3 Years

KBS2’s “Descendants of the Sun” reignites a dying interest in Hallyu dramas in Japan.

According to an entertainment industry representative, “Descendants of the Sun” has been sold to Japan for an estimated $100,000 per episode. The 16 episodes of “Descendants of the Sun” had a price tag of almost 2 billion won (approximately $1.7 million). This signifies a rebound from the sudden drop in the amount that Japanese companies were willing to spend on Korean dramas in the past three years.

With “Winter Sonata” as the catalyst back in 2002, Japan was the biggest market for Korean Hallyu for almost 10 years, with Japanese broadcasting companies fiercely fighting for the publication rights of various Hallyu dramas. Thanks to this, the cost of these rights also sharply rose.

Well beyond $100,000, the average price per episode for Korean dramas was steadily around $200,000 until 2012, when “Love Rain,” starring Jang Geun Suk, was exported for $300,000. However, its less-than-satisfactory production was unable to live up to the immense cost, and the drama was regarded as a failure, both domestically in South Korea and overseas in Japan, causing a quick decrease in the popularity of Korean dramas in Japan. Other dramas besides “Love Rain” were also seen as disappointments, adding to this downward trend.

On top of this, in 2012, in response to Song Il Gook’s participation in a swimming event promoting South Korea’s claim to Dokdo Island, the Japanese Minister of Foreign Affairs at the time stated through a broadcast, “We’re sorry, but it will be hard for him to enter Japan. We think that represents the Japanese people’s feelings as a whole.” This controversial event also contributed to the sharp decrease in Japanese interest in Hallyu dramas. 

After this, the Japanese export prices for Korean dramas fell well below $100,000, and have been stuck in the five-figure range for the past three years.

In the midst of such a situation, “Descendants of the Sun,” with its domestic popularity as a backbone, has managed to break this trend, pleasing many in the drama industry.

One industry representative states, “After its popularity exploded in both South Korea and China, Japanese buyers wanted to be the first ones to buy ‘Descendants of the Sun.’ Because it stars Hallyu actress Song Hye Kyo and recently discharged Song Joong Ki, as well as having a positive response that it is entertaining, the drama had an increasingly expensive price tag, and the competition among buyers became more fierce.”

However, it seems like it will be a while before export prices for Korean dramas can reach $200,000 again. 

Broadcasting companies are expecting SBS‘s “Daebak,” which will star Jang Geun Suk and premiere on March 28, to also aid in the revival of the popularity of Korean Hallyu dramas in Japan.

Anyone know if SHK is doing any other projects right now?. Or is she just taking a break right now?. She should consider doing Asia fan meetings!... As far as I know she has huge fan following in China, Japan, Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong, Philippines just to name a few of the Asian countries she could travel to.

Wow! DotS already sold in Japan.

At first their target was China aside from their home Korea. But It wasn't just big in both countries, but it turned out to be a sensational-phenomenal-record breaking drama.

It's not that secret that for the past few years there is already a decreased of interest of hallyu in Japan. But because DotS is making waves at home and China that the good news about its greatness already reached Japan. So it is great that Japan make an interest in it eventhough it is not on the half of its airing yet. And they didn't hesitate to buy the rights and made the price paid even higher than the current price of any k-dramas at this moment. Another history in the making? 

And i'm sure that other countries which loves k-drama is on the heat to buy the rights, the like of Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia and more.

The last time that the great hallyu dominated the South East Asia region and even East Asian nations was the time of BOF when Asian's went crazy go loco at K-drama. After that there is still some drama that is well received but not to the point that it was sensational in this countries. So i hope that DotS will receive this craziness again. 

I have this feeling that it it will be. Because in Korea alone it is writing history and breaking records in the newest era of Korean entertainment drama industry.

The parodies were good. It is adding fuel to heat of the drama. I was so surprised about the Infinite Challege when we saw the casts wearing military uniforms as we know that IC is under MBC.

It is making phenomenal because it is not just drama, but it is showing us a glimpsed of humanity and the life's of those people who works eventhough their very own life is at risk.

Being a medical personnel myself i am so touched to how this drama emphasized the sanctity of human life through Kang Mo Yeon. I also appreciate that they make a character of Yoo Shi Jin which is teaching us their undying love for others and the world to have a better place to live in.

They didn't just make drama. They made a story that reflects life.

No one can beat, can take away or even borrow Song Hye Kyo's Hallyu Queen/ Korean Drama Queen title.

aside from the drama story/casts , DOTS gives us also wonderful OSTs and so far they have officially released 4 awesome songs and there will be 1 coming this Thursday for its official release.  As for TWTWB , this drama does have also the best OSTs and of them is from R&B queen Gummy and happy to know that she is part of SHKs new drama OST and this time her song gave the most feel for SHK/SJK moments like the one in that epic wine kiss - "You are my Everything" with Korean and English version whose been in the top charts also just like the other 3 officially released OST.

 

Gummy once said that she is SHK fan, for sure she is super happy that she is part  of SHKs drama OST again.

 

Even singer like Gummy is a fan of Kyo. She was fortunate to have twice given the opportunity to sing the OST of Kyo's drama (TWTWB & DOTS).  credit:songhyekyozone

Ladies, after reading those tried and true comments from netizens, I had goosebumps!

That is so true of KYO, and that's what I noticed, too, that in interviews, she is often genial

to her co-actors, giving them the opportunity to shine! That is what I admire most about this beautiful soul!

She is never selfish. She never for once talked about herself. No me me me me syndrome! 

She is a BIG STAR and she knows it, but always modest about it! 

So true, she is very well known in China and other Asian countries and have connections in other parts of the world, but

never boast about it! She is blessed with a beautiful face and a beautiful heart!
