Reporter Areum Jang = 'The Tale of a Gumiho 1938' Lee Dong-wook makes a heart-stopping bet with 'Single Ear' for his younger brother Kim Bum.

On the 28th, tvN's Saturday and Sunday drama 'The Tale of a Gumiho 1938' (directed by Kang Shin-hyo/written by Han Woo-ri) revealed the images of Lee Yeon (played by Lee Dong-wook) and Ryu Hong-ju (played by Kim So-yeon) welcoming a procession of indigenous gods. It raises curiosity about what will happen in Myoyeongak, which is full of indigenous gods.

In the last broadcast, the friendship between Lee Yeon, Ryu Hong-joo, and Chun Moo-yeong (played by Ryu Kyung-soo) 'Sansins' was destroyed. Lee Yeon and Chun Moo-yeong, who crossed over to the 'world of the wicked' to find Ryu Hong-ju, who disappeared, met Jang San-beom (Ko Geon-han) after many twists and turns.Ryu Hong-ju, possessed by Jangsan Beom, did not recognize her friends, but soon woke up thinking about the moments they had together as children. After confirming their friendship, they defeated Jang San-beom.

However, the fact that Cheon Moo-young invited Jang San-beom to obtain the essence of a thousands-year-old monster was a great shock to everyone. Subsequently, Cheon Moo-young reveals that he is a red and white mask, and he warns Yi-yeon that he will never return to modern times. As a result, Lee Yeon's anger created tension.

In the meantime, the changed scenery of Myoyeongak in the public photos draws attention. The image of the local deities flocking to Myoyeongak rather than the Afterlife Immigration Office is eye-catching. Lee Yeon and Ryu Hong-ju are in a situation where they have to solve their complaints, and they are making unusual expressions, drawing attention. In particular, the ulterior motives of New Do (Jeong Seon-cheol) of the 'Shinigami Mercenary Corps', who have hidden among the indigenous gods, add to the curiosity.

On the other hand, the dangerous appearance of Lee Rang (played by Kim Bum) was also captured. After being told by Cheon Moo-young that his future self will die in place of Lee Yeon, a time of worry comes to Lee Rang. Then, at the moment, he is in danger due to a bet with 'Dokgakgwi' (Kim Beop-rae) who visited Myoyeongak. In order to save Lee Rang, who looks dangerous like a dying candle, Lee Yeon starts a heart-throbbing bet with a single ear. Two people fighting a tight battle without retreating. I wonder if Yi-yeon will be able to win the bet with the single eagle.

In the 8th episode of 'The Tale of a Gumiho 1938', which airs today, the images of Lee Yeon, Ryu Hong-joo, and Chun Moo-yeong are drawn as they fiercely clash to get what they want. The process of recovering friendship between the 'gumiho' brothers, who became distant due to an unexpected misunderstanding, will also be drawn.

The production team said, "The year 1938 was a difficult time for indigenous gods and monsters," and added, "Lee Yeon's determined performance, who awakened to what she had to do to pay off her debts to the times before returning to the modern era, will be interestingly drawn. "he said. The 8th episode of 'The Tale of a Gumiho 1938' will be broadcast at 9:20 pm on the same day.

Tale of the Nine-Tailed 1938 Episode 8 Recap and Review: Joseon’s Spirit in Danger, Yeon’s Decision

Tale of the Nine-Tailed 1938 (구미호뎐 1938) is a sequel to the much-loved fantasy Kdrama of the same named and is directed by Kang Shin-hyo and Jo Nam-hyung. The Kdrama stars Lee Dong-wook, Kim So-yeon, Kim Bum, Ryu Kyung-soo, Kim Young-ji, and Hwang Hee alongside other cast members.

The sequel brings the gumiho Lee Yeon away from his happy ending and back to the year 1938 where he once again comes face to face with his brother Lee Rang and Ryu Hong-joo. Now, he has to find a way to return to the present and to his loved one, but this isn’t something that will come to him easily.

The show will have 16 episodes and be broadcasted on tvN’s Saturday-Sunday 9:20 PM KST timeslot previously occupied by Pandora Beneath the ParadiseTale of the Nine-Tailed 1938 episode 8 has a run time of 73 minutes.

Tale of the Nine-Tailed 1938 episode 8 begins with Myoyeongak welcoming the kimchi making season and Yeon is not one who can escape this. Meanwhile, the Shinigami Mercenaries arrive in Joseon and are ready to target the demons and gods who wander the grounds of this country.

Meanwhile, Rang cannot stop thinking about Moo-young’s words and wonders if Yeon’s actions until now were out of pity. As he wanders aimlessly, he reaches Yeo-hee’s workplace while the latter waits to meet him outside Myoyeongak.

On the other hand, Ryuhei Kato welcomes the Shinigami Mercenaries and tells them of the experiment he has been conducting which needs the demons of Joseon, alive. Their task is to capture these demons; this is also his way of destroying the spirit of Joseon once and for all.

Elsewhere, Moo-young finds a way to connect with the dead spirit of his brother before reviving him. With less than a week to go, Yeon prepares to leave and tells Hong-joo to take of herself after he has left. At the afterlife immigration office, the indigenous gods continue to protest and demand a place to stay from Taluipa.

Taluipa tells her husband to get rid of them as soon as possible and he brings them to Myoyeongak for Yeon and Hong-joo to take care of. Unaware that one of the Shinigami Mercenaries’ members has sneaked in with them and is getting first-hand information about everything that is taking place.

Yeon and Hong-joo take care of the indigenous gods’ issues one by one, before stopping for the day. Meanwhile, Ryuhei Kato subtly warns Eun-ho with a piece of jewellery she had made use of for the rebellion. On the other hand, Rang is lost in thought while Yeo-hee sings, when he suddenly leaves.

Yeo-hee soon follows and witnesses his vulnerability that is unable to face the feelings that have been budding inside him because of Yeon, Yeo-hee and the bandit gang. She then tells him to not run away like a coward but to face these feelings, thus, bringing him back to sensibility.

While this assures Rang for some time, he later listens to Yeo-hee talk about the two getting married and is unable to stop thinking about the death that awaits him. Later, he sees some of the demons betting on lifespan and is intrigued to join in. However, he loses everything and is only left to live until the day ends.

Meanwhile, Moo-young finally sees his brother in the mirror that connects them and is told to bring the guardian stone and the golden ruler. Elsewhere, Hong-joo finds a demon hidden in the toilet and is told about the same treasures that are in Yeon’s hands.

Away from all this, the tired Yeon is about to go to sleep when he finds out what his brother has done. He rushes to Rang and is infuriated by his actions. Yeon then heads to the demon who has taken Rang’s lifespan and begins a round of betting with him.

Lim Ji Ho has mentioned about Kim So Yeon in the latest interview.

In the currently airing tvN drama 'The Tale of a Nine Tailed Fox 1938', he is appearing as Akira Saito, a Japanese monster and an agent in the Security Department of the Government General's Office. In the play, he first appeared in a scene where he confronts Ryu Hong-joo (Kim So-yeon) on a train over Manpasikjeok and drew attention.

He also talked about Kim So-yeon, with whom he filmed the train scene, saying, "She's so different from Hong-ju in the film. I told her she could talk to me casually, but she still uses respectful language. When you're acting, some people do what they have, and it's different, but you feel like you're in the character. When I was filming action scenes with her, she tried to make me feel comfortable because I was a rookie. Even in the scene where she grabs my arm, she asks me if she can hold it harder. We filmed together for nine months, and she was always the same. I thought, "If I'm going to be a senior, I want to be a senior like her.

Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938: Episodes 7-8

by DaebakGrits

203de4baa3806fc5b328ba006949e4ff461ad5d4

Our drama does more genre hopping than usual this week because our latest demon takes our heroes channel surfing. But there’s a theme that ties everything together: brothers — both blood and found. Our fox’s relationships with his half-brother and his fellow mountain god are put to the test, and while one relationship comes out stronger, the other appears unsalvageable.

EPISODES 7-8

cfe47bccac2a5d7d0d7a2c66ffd7e3ef9a8e80cb

Last we saw Yeon, he and Moo-young had traveled to the Path of the Damned and unexpectedly found themselves on the set of a strange sageuk drama… which turns out to be a twisted playground that their latest demon friend, Jang San-beom, made especially for them. Jang San-beom was once a simple tiger, but his knack for impersonations helped him grow and became a powerful demon with one goal in mind: becoming a mountain god. Among his many worrisome talents are voice mimicry, shape-shifting, and mind-f**kery.

While Jang San-beom’s skillset doesn’t bode well for our heroes, it makes for amusing television — both within our nine-tailed universe and for those of us watching Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938. This strange (super meta) universe that Jang San-beom pieced together using memories plucked straight from Yeon and Moo-young’s time-traveling brains has our heroes battling K-drama tropes and cheesy PPL in their efforts to locate Hong-joo and sus out Jang San-beom.

Hong-joo is easy enough to find, as she’s been cast as the drama-within-a-drama’s leading lady. Unfortunately, she’s under Jang San-beom’s control and has no memory of her childhood friends. She only knows them as Male #4 (Moo-young) and Male #5 (Yeon — much to his annoyance lol). When they act out a scene together, Yeon finds himself on the receiving end of her dramatic slaps, of which there are many because the show won’t go on until they read the script properly. Yeon dials it in — LOL! He reads the stage directions! — and decides he and Moo-young would better utilize their time if they focused on finding Jang San-beom.

Although he has the right idea, he mistakenly assumes that the man behind the curtain is the sageuk’s director/script writer. Moo-young, however, correctly deduces that the young girl they first met is Jang San-beom in disguise — because the first person the hero meets in such K-dramas is always the suspect. I mean, he isn’t wrong — both about K-dramas in general and Jang San-beom’s identity.

Instead of changing into his true form, though, Jang San-beom takes on the appearance of Hong-joo, and Moo-young hesitates, unable to harm the mirror image of the woman he loves. (Idiot.) Yeon, however, is much better at discerning reality from fiction and plunges his wooden stake into Jang San-beom’s back, but wouldn’t you know it? The special, magical stake Moo-young gave Yeon is a fake, and as Moo-young runs to retrieve his real weapon, Jang San-beom uses the delay brought on by Moo-young’s duplicity as an opportunity to change the channel. But not before issuing a challenge: try and rescue Hong-joo within one hour.

After the channel change, Yeon and Moo-young find themselves on the set of a gangster biopic about KIM DU-HAN (cameo by Ahn Jae-mo), which has a new set of tropes and rules for them to follow in grainy, full-screened glory. Although the mountain gods easily fight off Du-han’s minions — not that Du-han’s pre-programmed dialogue acknowledges it — they get their butts kicked by an overpowered Du-han. (Cue: commercial for dental repair).

The scene changes again, and Yeon and Moo-young are now on the set of a talk show. When the host of the show appears wearing the face of Moo-young’s dead brother CHUN HO-YOUNG (Shim Hee-seop), things get spicy. Although Moo-young’s first instinct is to rage-quit, Yeon reins him in and tells him to suck it up and play through Jang San-beom’s little mind games in order to find and rescue Hong-joo. But, of course, once our heroes settle in and agree to play along, the Ho-young doppelgänger goes for the jugular and asks Yeon: Why did you kill Moo-young’s older brother?

The only thing this bit was missing was a cut to a live-steaming audience with a comments section exploding over this baited question, but overall this was an ingenious way for our drama to reveal our characters’ backstory. Yes, Yeon killed Moo-young’s brother, but he did it to protect Moo-young. In his last moments, Ho-young didn’t appear to be in his right mind, and in his madness he was going to kill Moo-young. Although it clearly pained Yeon, he stuck by his oath to protect Moo-young, and he killed Ho-young even though he had to have known the strain his actions would put on his friendship.

In the present, Yeon realizes that Jang San-beom is trying to widen the rift between him and Moo-young because the mountain gods are stronger together. After Yeon calms Moo-young’s temper and delivers an impassioned threat towards Jang San-beom, a quaking Jang San-beom changes the channel back to his sageuk production and expedites his wedding to Hong-joo. She is a puppet under his spell, and when Yeon and Moo-young follow a trail of rice puffs and locate her, she’s blank-faced and acting as Jang San-beom’s guard dog.

What ensues is a beautifully choreographed and emotional fight scene. Yeon and Moo-young go head-to-head with Hong-joo, fighting off her attacks even as they try to break through Jang San-beom’s mind control with their pleas for her return. Scenes of their childhood are intermixed with the present fight, and while Jang San-beom’s magic is strong, the power of love and friendship is stronger.

Cheesy sounding, I know, but it’s much more badass in the drama. Hong-joo’s fight to regain control of her mind and body is palpable, and when she finally breaks free and sends her sword sailing through the air and straight through Jang San-beom’s chest, it’s very much a “You go, girl!” moment. And then, when Yeon and Moo-young also stab their swords through Jang San-beom, it’s as though the Three Musketeers have reunited. Except they haven’t… because Moo-young still has his own agenda.

The door to the Path of the Damned closes, but Moo-young stays behind. He delivers the final blow that destroys Jang San-beom and reveals the magic crystal Moo-young needed to heal the parts of his body that were still stone. Yeon, who also lingered behind to see what Moo-young was up to, is unsurprised (but disappointed) to confirm that Moo-young is the man in the red and white mask. And despite their recent alliance and begrudging friendliness, Moo-young hasn’t faltered from his villainous path of vengeance.

Kim So-yeon's passionate performance in 'The Tale of a Nine Tailed Fox 1938' stands out.

On the June2nd, the agency said, "In the tvN Saturday drama 'The Tale of a Gumiho 1938', Kim So-yeon's true value is being revealed, playing the role of Ryu Hong-joo, a former western mountain god and current president of Myoyeon-gak, who completes the character."

From the appearance of Kim So-yeon attacking Lee Yeon (Lee Dong-wook) and Moo-yeong (Ryu Kyung-soo) relentlessly with unfocused eyes, possessed by Jang San-beom in the last broadcast, to her temper when dealing with complaints from various gods out of nowhere due to the undressing group (Kim Jeong-nan). Each episode showed a different facet.
Not only she, but from the beginning of the play, she is fierce, fierce and mysterious to Yiyeon, and she is proving her own heavy presence by creating her identity as Ryu Hong-joo as a character overflowing with charisma to each member of the family.

In this way, Kim So-yeon captures the hearts of viewers by creating a colorful atmosphere for each situational character with her skillful level control. tvN’s “Tale of the Nine-Tailed 1938” has dropped a preview of the upcoming episode!

“Tale of the Nine-Tailed 1938” is a sequel to the hit 2020 drama “Tale of the Nine-Tailed,” which told the story of the male gumiho (mythical nine-tailed fox) Yi Yeon (Lee Dong Wook) in the present day. However, in the new sequel, he unexpectedly finds himself back in 1938, and he embarks on an eventful adventure in his quest to return to the present.

Spoilers

In the previous episode of “Tale of the Nine-Tailed 1938,” Yi Yeon ultimately decided to intervene in the affairs of this era. Although Yi Yeon had tried his best not to meddle as he’s just a guest in this time period, Yi Yeon decided he could no longer be a mere bystander after he witnessed the indigenous gods being persecuted.

While Yi Yeon starts to pursue the truth with Yi Rang (Kim Bum), Ryu Hong Joo (Kim So Yeon), Cheon Moo Young (Ryu Kyung Soo), and the Shinigami mercenaries each set out to steal the guardian stone and the golden ruler that are in Yi Yeon’s hands. With less than a week left before Yi Yeon returns to the present day, a new chapter begins as Yi Yeon determines to take matters into his own hands.

The newly released stills show the intriguing meeting between Yi Yeon, Ryu Hong Joo, and Cheon Moo Young. After learning from the god whom she met at Myoyeongak that the treasures are in Yi Yeon’s possession, Ryu Hong Joo’s eyes sparkled with joy. She then goes on to search for the guardian stone and the golden ruler all over the room while Yi Yeon is away but to no avail. As if he knows this all along, Yi Yeon flaunts a slight smirk when he shows Ryu Hong Joo that the guardian stone is still with him.

The other stills depict Yi Yeon going out to look for Cheon Moo Young. Although the wounds on their faces hint at their upcoming physical fight in the next episode, a glimpse of a subtle change in the two friends’ relationship can also be detected through stills that capture them drinking side by side with an exhausted look on their faces. It raises questions about what the two discuss and if they can finally confide in each other about what’s been on their minds all this time.

The production team teased that Yi Yeon will plan a special strategy to get his two friends back and remarked, “Yi Yeon announces that he will go to Bando Hotel with his treasure. Please look forward to seeing how his friends will react upon hearing this and whether the three mountain gods will join forces.”

The next episode of “Tale of the Nine-Tailed 1938” will air on June 3 at 9:20 p.m. KST.

Exclusive Interview: Kim Bum & Kim So Yeon On “ Tale Of The Nine-Tailed 1938”
By: Puja Talwar

Kim Bum is back again as the crafty and troublesome half human and half gumiho, Lee Rang in the “Tale Of The Nine -Tailed 1938”, a sequel to the 2020 hit “Tale Of The Nine Tailed”. The drama is headlined by Lee Dong Wook who returns as the charming gumiho, Lee Yeon. Joining the cast is actor Kim So Yeon ( The Penthouse) in a pivotal role.

As the action shifts to Japan (1910-1945), it shows how Yeon has 16 hours to retrieve a stone that can help keep the gate between the earth and the world of demons firmly under lock, and that is only possible if he can get access to a mysterious masked villain. However, the one thing that remains constant is the love hate relationship between the two brothers Yeon and Rang. Though they had transitioned from enemies to friends in the previous edition, however in 1938, Rang’s disdain for his brother is palpable.

In an exclusive with Urban Asian, Kim Bum when asked about revisiting Lee Rang yet again and what appealed to him most about the character said,

“When I first approached Lee Rang, I thought simply. I thought of Lee Rang as an innocent character who just wants to bother and mess around to get attention from the person he likes, similar to a child. I was attracted to this story because I was intrigued by the script, which is based on Korean legends and tales with a modern, fun twist. For those who have watched season 1, they will know that Lee Rang has many scars, and he only looks up to his older brother. It will be exciting to see what the year 1938 was like for Lee Rang and how future Lee Yeon’s appearance affects and changes him. To use a Marvel analogy, it’s like the Avengers story at the time when Captain America and Hydra were present.”

Kim So Yeon who plays the a Mountain Goddess of the West” Ryu Hong Joo confesses being a fan of the fantasy genre, as well as of season one of “ Tale of the Nine-tailed”

“ When I was offered the role, I accepted without thinking twice. (laughs) I wanted to challenge myself to do a fantasy drama for I don’t know if there ever will be another chance”.  The actor also admits she trained diligently at an action school and sharing screen space with Lee Dong Wook was a dream come true for her. “ I have experienced action scenes before, but sword fighting was entirely different. I practiced with a sword that is heavier and longer than the actual sword used in filming. At first, I couldn’t even swing it across. (laughs) I am relieved to see how the scene turned out in the show, as many have helped with the process. And Lee Dong-wook was like the central figure of the set. He was an actor I have always wanted to try working with, and getting the chance to do so was exciting, and thanks to him, I had a lot of fun on set”.

Kim Bum who remains synonymous as So Yi Jung , one of the key F4 members from the cult classic Boys Over Flowers, which has been a rite of passage for fans into the K-drama universe reveals he has always been overwhelmed with the love that has come his way.

“It has been over a decade since ‘Boys Over Flowers’ came out, but it still sticks with me. This show helped me realize that there are people outside of Korea who love me and watch me. Though they are far away, their sincerity always reached me, and during my break and in times of sadness, the fans’ energy changed them into grateful times.”

The talented actor who has gone on to prove his versatility in hits such “Tale Of The Nine Tailed”, “Ghost Doctor” and “Law School” says he is always drawn to the storyline and the world of the drama, when choosing his projects.

”Working in a new genre, collaborating with new individuals, and expressing novel emotions always presents challenges. Hence, it is difficult to single out one genre as the most challenging. Personally, I have a fondness for cerebral, detective-based genres or large-scale projects that encompass an unprecedented epic universe”.

With the global popularity and mainstreaming of S Korean content, both actors feel its given them an opportunity to showcase the diversity and richness of S Korean content.

“We have always been sharing our stories, just as we are now, and we are grateful that people are listening to them. Because we will continue to do so for those who watch our stories, it has not challenged the actors ‘more.’ We have been challenged ‘constantly’”, says Kim Bum.

Kim So Yeon further adds

“I believe our drama has the responsibility to be the storyteller of Korean traditional folktales throughout the world. As a messenger that delivers Korea’s charms, and as one of the actors in the cast, I work with more responsibility.”

'The Tale of a Nine Tailed Fox 1938', which returned with a unique world view and more spectacular action, attracted domestic and foreign fans by showing the essence of K-fantasy action drama. GT: Hello from India and you look just amazing as the Mountain Goddess of the West” Ryu Hong Joo. What was it like coming on board this show which has had a popular following. What drew you to the drama and to your character?

Kim So Yeon: Firstly, as a fan of Season 1, I was very excited to join in in season 2. I personally love fantasy, so when I was offered the role, I accepted without thinking twice. (laughs) I wanted to challenge myself to do a fantasy drama for I don’t know if there ever will be another chance!

GT: You are also doing a lot of action in this drama, how challenging was it? How was it work with Lee Dong Wook?

Kim So Yeon: I have been training diligently at an action school for the first few sword fighting scenes. I have experienced action scenes before, but sword fighting was entirely different. I practiced with a sword that is heavier and longer than the actual sword used in filming. At first, I couldn’t even swing it across. (laughs) I am relieved to see how the scene turned out in the show, as many have helped with the process. And Lee Dong-wook was like the central figure of the set. He was an actor I have always wanted to try working with, and getting the chance to do so was exciting, and thanks to him, I had a lot of fun on set.

GT. K Dramas have given us amazing stories with very strong female characters. You yourself have played very strong characters. What is your process and method. What draws you to a project, the story or your role or anything else?

Kim So Yeon: Once I assume a character, I immerse myself in the character from that moment on. The image of the character is formed as I determine how I can act as though people would feel the life this character has lived through by the words they generally use and the facial expressions they frequently display. Deciding on a project is connected to understanding the character, as whether or not I can live and breathe the role is what I consider most important.

GT. With the growing popularity of Korean content world wide, what change have you observed. How is it also challenging actors and filmmakers in terms of stories?

Kim So Yeon: I think it’s clear that the content is more diverse. Like traditional Sageuk (historical dramas), I believe our drama has the responsibility to be the storyteller of Korean traditional folktales throughout the world. As a messenger that delivers Korea’s charms, and as one of the actors in the cast, I work with more responsibility.

GT. You were our favourite antagonist with your portrayal in The Penthouse. You are very popular in India.  In your career spanning over two decades you have done all sorts of genres. Do you have a dream role or a genre you want to do? And any plans to visit India?

Kim So Yeon: I am grateful that many loved ‘The Penthouse.’ If I get the opportunity, I would love to visit India to say hi. I would like to participate in a variety of genres, instead of just one. I hope to show you a new version of Kim So-yeon through my next performance.
