Synopsis

Korea, 1724. Once upon a time in the Joseon Dynasty, Chun-doong (Lee Jung-jae) meets a beautiful woman while in the middle of a fight in an old market. Having fallen in love at first sight, good fortune is with him and he finds her once again. Her name is Seol-ji (Kim Ok-bin) and she works as a gisaeng, a Korean traditional singing and dancing girl. They spend a memorable night together but Chun-doong loses her again when she moves to work at another bar. When he finds her new hiding place, however, he is warned away by her new manager, Man-deuk (Kim Suk-hoon) who has connections in the city's underworld.

One day, while still despondent without Seol-ji in his life, he accidentally knocks over and kills the boss of the Jjak-gwi gang. Before he knows it, because of his fighting skills Chun-doong becomes the replacement boss. Soon, there is a gathering of the region's gang bosses at the bar where Seol-ji now works. In the middle of the meeting, Chun-doong causes a disturbance to steal Seol-ji away under the nose of Man-deuk. The meeting turns into chaos because of the incident and ends abruptly. A furious Man-deuk teams up with rival gangsters to plot the downfall of the Jjak-gwi gang...

Lee Makes Big-Screen Comeback After 3 Years

Actor Lee Jung-jae will return to the big screen by starring in '1724 Kibang Nandongsageon.' The actor recently said he feels alive as an actor whenever he takes on more "energetic" roles.

At a recent press conference, the actor said he felt significant pressure because of his sophisticated urban image. He said he overcame his stress by practicing hard.

On the Andre Kim labeled clothes he wore in the movie, Lee said he had asked the famous designer to design something for him and that he was more than happy with the results. Talking about the film, he said the audience will have the chance to experience a faster-paced, unique-style movie as the film was alternatingly shot with 10mm and 6mm cameras.

The story revolves around the most sought-after gisaeng during the early 18th-century Joseon Dynasty. Lee co-stars with other top actors, including Kim Suk-hoon and Lee Won-jong. The film will open nationwide in May.

1724 GIBANG-NANDONG SAGEON Yeo Gyun-dong is a man of many talents. Most people might know him as the director of La Belle in 2000 but he has also written several screenplays (among them Out to the World), worked as a producer (Green Fish) and has acted in many films including The Uprising and Love Bakery. He is now directing a new film for Sidus FNH starring Lee Jeong-jae (Typhoon, Oh Brothers), Kim Ok-bin (Dasepo Naughty Girls, Arang) and Kim Seok-hoon (So Cute, Tube). In this action/comedy, a young man who has trained in military tactics by his parents and is now considered a genius of the military arts takes an interest in the beautiful Seol Ji not knowing that she is actually on a secret mission from the king.

LEE Jung-jae fights over KIM Ok-bin

Young actress KIM Ok-bin plays a gisaeng (female entertainer) in the historic action comedy The Accidental Gangster and the Mistaken Courtesan (English working title; Korean title: 1724 Gibang Nandong Sageon). LEE Jung-jae plays a skilled fighter who somehow attracts fights. His character falls in love with KIM’s character and takes on her boss, a notorious criminal leader, to free her.

LEE told reporters that he wanted to try his hand at playing a different kind of character, a comical loose cannon type of character like in The Accidental Gangster and the Mistaken Courtesan. The action comedy will mark LEE’s first film since 2005’s Typhoon. In 2000, he was seen in Il Mare with JUN Ji-hyun (aka Gianna JUN).

KIM said that she found acting in historical films more difficult, but she was helped by director YEO Kyun-dong’s consultations. KIM practiced traditional dances for two months in preparation of the film. She will next star in PARK Chan-wook’s highly anticipated film Thirst, and was previously seen in Dasepo Naughty Girls.

The action comedy is set in Korea’s Joseon dynasty and will be released on December 4. YEO previously directed 2006’s Silk Shoes, and 2000’s La Belle, among others.
