I saw this interview in chinese subs. Decided to sub parts of it in English but I think there may be  inaccuracies in my subtitles.

Thanks! Ya this interview is good. Very down to earth man. Is this interview still in youku? I first saw it there but I haven't visited youku for a while now. He also spoke about his working partner JNR.

I happen to not like so called "erotic" Korean movies- I guess that Empire of Lust and Innocent thing will fit that genre. I find that they lack depth of emotion... Maybe that is what JH referring to...

The so called "erotic" scenes in EOL & Innocent Thing was so put off.

I kinda wish the girl wasn't a teenager. I love seeing JH interact with smaller kids, like in Thank you and Robbers. With teenagers it's a bit uncomfortable since JH is so good looking... But since she is, I hope that she won't be as cutesy and peppy as the girl in The Swordsman...

Ya, miss his interaction with children. Like the girl in Robbers, the girl in TY, the girl in Flu. His interaction with his daughter in BPP was alright. Hahaha...are you worried the teenager might have a crush on this ahjusshi? Not impossible ya. Lol.

I actually am concerned that it's the same director, since the characterization and interactions between characters were so bland in The Swordsman. Action we know he can do, but all the rest needs to be better...

I think the script is bland. Not much the Director can do to un bland it. :grimace:

Hahaha you're Right about the FL in BM, it took me so long to like that character hehe

IKR. Could it also be 1 of the reason(s) why the rating wasn't good or the viewership wasn't good - I'm guessing. People really have to get past those annoying episodes but if anyone who isn't JH fans or isn't the FL fans, how many people would want to sit through those silly episodes.

I'm not really surprised about CTH, I just still can't understand How can he openly be so annoying and unpleasant And horrible sometimes.

JH is an extremely loyal person to keep this friendship, I know it's their culture but JH goes through a lot, CTH is so toxic sometimes... :(

I'm sure in our circle of friends we've also come across people who masked their jealousy behind a smile or behind a laughter. JH is loyal to all his friendship & relationship - to a certain extent naive to think that everyone will be the same as him but in actual fact, not everyone values friendship like he does.

"How can a person so silly and lousy can become a cop?".

Obviously the scriptwriter doesn't know (very much) that cops are supposed to be smarter (hahaha) or alert or whatever it is. Have you watched Beautiful Mind? In the early episodes, the role of the Traffic Policewoman (the FL) really got me boiled up. Seemed like the scriptwriter doesn't know the difference in duties of a TP vs that of a Criminal Detective.

I have a question about NBBCC this week episode: I couldn't understand well but did CTH mock JH because of TJ again to embarrass him in front of the guests?

Are you surprised if CTH mocked JH? Frankly, I'm not. CTH has always given me the impression he's "jealous" . Whether intentionally or not intentionally, constantly harping on the same stale joke is not gentlemanly. Who doesn't have a humble beginning? Even we (who are non artistes) probably also have our own humble beginning. But to constantly bring it out to talk about it, is stale.

I agree that his performance was off in Midas... I wonder if he chose acting that way maybe to prove he can do the exact opposite to Dae gill? Very strange choice to act so reserved and bland... I guess JH himself knew that his performance was off, as he said that he chose to do Money flower cause he looked for another project like Midas to make up for it...

Midas & DRT were both in 2011. However, his performance in DRT certainly was much better.

Also, right now if you try to search JH's name on twitter, it's flooded with results talking about the movie, and looks like the JH in the movie is not a nice guy, so many of the comments about this "JH" are negative...

Are the comments about him personally or about the character he plays?

    Quote

The only problem with casts for me were the FLs from Midas, DRT and WOL. They just were unable to produce any chemistry with JH, and that really hurt my viewing experience...

My opinion, his performance in Midas was off for me. And it's just bad that both he & his FL don't produce any chemistry as lovers. The FL in TWDR doesn't have chemistry with most of her MLs. And the FL in WOL is annoying for me. Not her but the role she plays. Is it the acting, is it her smile or her hair? Something is just annoying.

I think the advantage of JH over many other "leads" is that he doesn't mind looking ridiculous. That is why, unlike many "hot" actors that are more busy looking sexy, JH can also do comedy. I remember seeing a meme  saying that JH is as if Johnny Depp and Jim Carrey had a child :D

Indeed. He doesn't mind looking weird or silly or ridiculous for that character. Or even his looks. Look at the bad hairstyle in BPP, Iris, WOL. Mainly that mushroom hairstyle. Some actors won't shave their hair or have a weird hairstyle for the character they play.

Oh, a better script, for sure! As much as I love JH's performance in MC, the main plot really hurts it. BW needing to be impressed with Hwi or the girl, that weren't really impressive at all, is ridiculous and reduces from JH's character.

I think I prefer good casts over good scripts. Hahaha! At least the good cast can "compensate" for the lousy script. But I contradict myself. Gaekgu got fairly good cast but still the drama was off for me.

It feels like in the years before FTLY, JH was experimenting a lot with his acting. Sometimes he missed, sometime he hit. It feels like after FLTY that his acting stabilized, though he did still had the occasional miss (Gebonga!!!!!) :D

It's indeed interesting how people are different in their taste.

Actually I like to ask, which is "better"....? To have good script with not so good actors/actress as the leads or to have super good leads with lousy script? Imo, Gaekgu got fairly good casts but the script .....not for me. So I like to hear your opinion on your preference. :grimace:For me, MF & FTLY got good cast & rather good script. MC got good senior cast but script yiaks at some point. My dramaland taste changes as I age or as the years go by. What I enjoyed before may now seem yiaks or old fashioned. Hahaha! As for JH "Gaebong Ah" I think he got carried away or overdo it.

This is what the tranlsation says:

"Regarding the part that took on the character of the same name as actor Jang Hyuk, Jang Ki-yong added a laugh, saying, "I can't do it without a ritual, but it's different."

What does that mean?  Anyway, why didn't they just change the name?! So strange...

I may have remembered wrongly - memory isn't good these days. But JH also took the name JH from another actor right? Something similar story but I can't remember the exact. @Biology LessonI sent you a message. I've finished the drama.

You mean, except for his crying scenes in SOGC, right?

    Please no! No Gaebong ah!!

I realised that I like JH in heavy stuff. Don't know what word to use so I use heavy. Characters that are serious & no nonsense, ie. Pil Joo, Bang Won, Dr Lee Young Oh. I don't like him to play roles that requires him to act cute & most definitely not Gaebong ah! Apart from Gaebong ah, Wang So was rather alright for me (when Wang So was serious).

Most of the time the actors are not even trying to make crying scenes believable! They might as well go "wah-wah-wah" (and some actually do!).

I love JH crying scenes - the reason why I felt such a plot ie. Hercai, is suitable for him. JH cry scenes are very convincing. Not only his cry scenes but also the "torn in between" feelings. Want to love the girl but want to revenge as well. For him, 60 episodes also never mind. I like that.

Will do! I do like Turkish shows- I think the acting in them is much better than in K dramas also they tend to be sexier :D. The only problem is that they just tend to be way too long! :) If only we could combine the quality of the Turkish shows with the length of K dramas... And JH of course! :P

    Spoiler

I definitely agree! The drama is so long. They can be at the same location for 2 episodes! I've actually ff quite pretty much already. The acting is good. Everyone played their role well but the only thing is....too many characters & they somehow looked alike some of them. So apart from the ML FL & some important characters, I can't be bothered to know who's who for the rest of them so I just ff. I was trying to visualise JH in this drama, many many romance scenes (hahaha). You enjoy ya & let me know what you think. (Sorry for the side track)....heehee!

It's about time! Even though the show has plenty of cute JH moments, the premise was badly done, and most of the guests I simply skipped. Not to mention the lack of subs... Which is why I'm so grateful for you @azureblue7 for posting the translations...

When is his new drama due out?

    Spoiler

While waiting for JH new project, you can try the drama I mentioned to you. Lots of romance (hahaha) also lots of obstacles. I take it that the culture is similar to k culture, the in-laws & out-laws & siblings & grandparents & parents are also involved in the couple life. I just ff those scenes when it gets too long or tedious just watching the in-laws & out-laws! The ML & FL chemistry is awesome.

And years later, he still wants to act in such a melo. Hope he gets his wish fulfilled.

What he said is so true. Acting melo (I take it as romance) in his 20s 30s & now 40s would have a different effect. Let's wait for a good script.

No I haven't. Is it good? Is it a role that would have been good for JH? Read the synopsis- it looks juicy! :) what I wished Money flower had

Personal opinion, I feel such plot suits JH because he's good at acting conflicting emotion. I'm only at episode 2 but those reviews I read said it's a good drama not to be missed. The sypnosis seemed straight forward (hahaha) how he used the girl for his revenge. Different from MF, this one has romance. Lol.

It's interesting cause he's clearly frustrated by the quality and theme of the shows he is offered, and he feels powerless in his ability to pitch a project himself. I wonder what it would take for JH to pitch his own project- this dream project he so craves...

I'm not sure how k entertainment industry works - whether it's the norm for actors & actresses to open their own company. In c entertainment, if the actor/actress is already established, popular, famous or rich whatever it may be, he she opens their own entertainment company & hires the people to manage. This way, the artistes has the power to choose their own script or turn down a script instead of doing what their agency tells them to do. Some even produce their own script.

Very annoying for that person to spread a rumor that she “heard” and she doesn’t even know where. The way she framed it made it sound like JH works primarily for money now because of his past debts. While there would be, nothing wrong with that per se, we all ultimately work for money, unless we are super rich but, it just felt like pure speculation that shouldn’t be spread so freely.

Was he in debt before? I don't recall or maybe I missed that. But yes, why wouldn't anyone work for money? How many of us would gladly work for free? Not me (hahaha)!

Let me share my 2 cents worth of chinese knowledge. Sorry if it wasn't perfect. The word print were too light, some words my poor eyesight cannot read. It said :

Photo of JH protecting JNR from bees were released. It brought to the attention of many people. JNR expression was afraid or shocked. She wanted to avoid the bees & JH gesture was to protect her. It was end of June & the filming was done in a school, a wedding scene. While they were in the midst of filming, suddenly hundreds of bees swamped the sky, the crew fell on the ground. But JH used his body to protect JNR, winning him cheers from the crew. Because of JH, JNR was not hurt & she was touched by his gesture.  In panic, the crew were unable to shoot a clip of how JH protected JNR.

    (That's all).

I like how JH is respectful of women. From what I understand about korean culture, there is gender inequality in SK. Maybe in time to come (future generation) it will not be so much but for JH generation, it still is. And I like the fact that he respect his wife (even though she's not seen but from his interviews, when talking about his wife, he's respectful of her). And he also respects the female co stars that he works with. I've read articles of other actors in another countries, some don't respect their female co stars. Esp if she's a newbie, all the more she's subjected to having to listen to the actor (esp if he's a senior actor & she's a newbie). It's nice to know that JH doesn't use his seniority to put newbie down. Infact, in a chinese article during or after the filming of MF, the mistress of Boo Cheon said that it was JH who helped her to bond with her onscreen son. She said she has no experience with kids & JH using his fatherly experience, guided her how to come down to a kid this age to bond with him. This helped her a lot with her many scenes with her onscreen son as they were able to portray a mother-son relationship like for real.

I  love how discrete he was and is about his private life. I remember Jang Nara at the time of FTLY mentioned in passing that she doesn't know anything about his private life, so I guess he keeps his professional and private life firmly apart.

Which is what I admired about him too. Keeping work/family life apart. But again I say, korean reporters are still kinda kind I guess. Had it been the mainland....you know what i mean.

But just being naked is different than actually kissing and doing an intimate scene. I remember he said that his wife being a dancer was used to such things and she encouraged him to be more open in such scenes...

I'm trying to imagine that as well. Imagine him going on & on & on ....the actors/actresses probably would feel bored. Lol. I'm not sure about k culture - but maybe it won't happen because koreans are respectful of their elders or seniors. So even if they're bored, they'll still act attentive. Heehee!

Oh. I didn't know about LDH but makes sense (that she'll feel something). I remember reading here that he seemed more comfortable with Honey Lee (who was dating someone at the time) than Oh Yeon Seo (who was single) during SOGC.

I think maybe OYS did feel something for him too when they're filming? I recalled reading an article about her in chinese that she said that she's not popular with female fans but male fans are more open to her style. Having watched her in the talk show with JH, can't remember the exact title of the talk show, she was fidgeting most of the time esp with her hair. Was she nervous being with JH? Hahaha!

I like Honey Lee, not necessary all her drama since I don't really follow but I like her confidence in the way she speaks. She seemed an intelligent person.

I seriously don't understand how actors can do kiss and sex scenes together and then act like nothing happened, with feeling or without them. I remember watching the interviews the cast of Empire of lust gave, and I couldn't imagine how the lead actress felt, having to do those scenes with ALL three guys, and then sit and act friendly with them.

I guess you/me are not actress for these reasons. Lol. I did ask a friend long time ago (she was a model), that apart from the look & the shape of being a model, one has to have the guts to change infront of many people. One can have what it takes to be a model but if she can't strip to the minimum infront of people, she can't be a model as most of the time, changing clothes is done backstage.

I thought it was "strange" that she wasn't asked to stand next to JH. Both her & the other actress should stand next to JH right? Frankly I hope the translation isn't correct for the word betrayed. I had hope it was a different word in korean instead of betrayed. It's not like she & JH were an item & he married someone else, betraying her. Lol.

Isn't it like this? When we don't have romantic feelings for the other party, we can do "anything" together without being awkward. Even if we sit in close proximity also it felt natural. But once someone has a feeling towards the other person, it feels awkward even if just a glance.

Maybe I'm wrong - don't bash me for saying this. But I've always had the impression that LDH likes him for real. Has a thing for him that kind of feeling. So maybe this can get pretty uncomfortable for both. Maybe he knows she likes him for real. Maybe it started after Robbers. IDK, I'm just guessing.
