  1. Was watching Legend of Ruyi since Legend of Zhen Huan is my #1 favorite show of all time. I feel like Legend of Ruyi is thus far not really living up to Legend of Zhen Huan (though those are pretty high standards) but it's... alright.

Going to start watching this one. Don't have high expectations for it, but it sounds interesting enough.

The opening scene about soiling clothes... is that not almost the same as Legend of Zhen Huan's scene? ,_, I have to admit, I like the main actress, though. I feel like there's something..more to her.

  2. I don't think a relationship like theirs is unrealistic, but not every kind of realism translate into a well written story or script. Nobody watches shows to observe the humdrums of someone else's everyday life. By episode 4, I am expecting some kind of .... Central conflict/theme/etc. I am honestly not feeling season 2 at all.

  3. Oh my gosh, yes. To whoever said that the show feels like a big fanservice thing, you couldn't have said it better. I don't know how I feel about that. On one hand, their chemistry was what sold the show in the first season. On the other hand, they are so out of character that it's a little awkward and feels a little fake. The lines are also super cheesy, which is something I like, but just because I personally wouldn't complain about the cheese factor doesn't mean it's a hallmark of a good script.

I would watch it, but I'm not sure where things are going and the characters feel very different than the ones portrayed in season 1.

  4. Stumbled upon this series a few days ago. Absolutely LOVE the actors. I love Kong's fashion sense and think he's really eye-catching. Also love Kong's aggressiveness/charm/flirting/smiles and I LOVE how Art is head hazer ... came off as so rough/in-charge at the beginning, yet when it came down to it, he's a shy, awkward-ish, fidget-y guy who likes pink milk and has a messy toom.

*squee* [[I think what gets my attention/favor the most is the fact that Kong is the aggressor when you'd "normally" expect the senior&head hazer Art to be the aggressor, hah! ]]

I never liked Thai dramas before, but seems like they're at the head of the industry when it comes to BL! This show had me smiling and grinning and giggling the whole time. Can't wait for S and I hope they keep the flavor the same!

By the way, anyone know of any series with a similar character dynamics? I tried to watch 2Moons, but can't even finish the 1st episode without fast forwarding because the main character is too much of a love-struck school girl. Brr.

It was simply the way Fan Bingbing portrayed Wu Meilang, maybe. In the other dramas I saw Wu Meilang, she had a much more mature aura and less of a playful-girly feel to her.

This drama's Wu Meilang was definitely not brilliant at reading people and countering their attacks.
I've seen a lot of harem/palace dramas, psychological thrillers and dramas feature highly intelligent characters so maybe my expectations were too high. But we are talking about the only female emperor in the history of China... I was expecting to be impressed by more than their costumes. Oh well.

I think you misunderstood, though. I wanted to see Wu Meilang act cruel. Not "I have no choice but to take revenge" cruel that the drama showed but the "I want power" type of cruel. I didn't want to see her start out vindictive nor do I want to see her become a heartless monster (although some history books will argue that that was the way she was), but I want to see her as more than just a (constantly crying) victim of her circumstances.

How about a character that is cruel, evil and praised for brilliance? A complex character you don't know whether you love or hate, fear or feel sorry for? A lonely soul who commanded a country's respect and took the country to a new age but lost everyone close to her through her own hands? A woman who made the most difficult choices and bore the heaviest, bloodiest burdens for the sake of her country?
A woman who was able to declare herself an emperor, I feel, should possess that kind of transcendental complexity.

That was why I really disliked this portrayal of Wu Meilang. She is basically a glorified duplicate of a typical protagonist from any palace dramas.

Thanks! ^^ Hu Ge definitely is amazing! His personality is one of a kind.
I feel as though Jin Dong and Wang Kai has a more formal mentor-mentee kind of brotherhood while Hu Ge and Wang Kai has more ~chemistry sparks~ sort of friendship. Plus I feel as though Hu Ge and Wang Kai intentionally-not-on-purpose play it up.

Bromance, CP, it's all so much more fun than the "romance" of kissing, getting married, blahblah.

Someone found it on another forum~ I'll translate tidbits from the other one when I have time :3 Meanwhile!

    5:30
Lady: So let me ask... since everyone hasn't left for Shanghai yet.. since you have a connection with everyone here, know everyone here sitting there, in your heart who is the most perfect couple?
(Hu Ge stares at Wang Kai)
Lady: The look in your eyes are telling everything!
Hu Ge: In the show, I did everything just for him!
    Lady: This is too scary~
Guy: Wait, I didn't see it
Lady: That kind of look is impossible to act out/learn
Guy: Who was he looking at?

Hu Ge: I chose you, Prince Jing, right? While making that scene, I messed up numerous time, because 'I chose you' right - say it slower and it sounds like 'I like you'

Liu Tao: ...I've also heard Hu Ge belongs to Wallce Huo, but after this, you can say Hu Ge belongs to Wang Kai, or MCS belongs to everyone

I have no idea how "I chose you" can sound anything like "I like you" considering the syllable difference and tone difference BUT MCS/Jingyan OTP. >3< It's fact. I wonder what Hu Ge mouthed at 19:23 and I can't make out what he said at 19:32.

It must have been awkward to call Jin Dong up when all they were going to talk about was Hu Ge/Wang Kai/Prince Jing/MCS, though..

I just don't like the innocent, loud and naive girl main character thing. I prefer more mature/quiet female leads like those played by Sheren Tang (Hong Kong) or like Sandra Ma in Love Me if You Dare.

angelababy: "Kim Kardashian of China" and $31 million wedding. Wow. But... she's really pretty in a striking way, so I guess there is that.

Wang Kai seems to be into modeling recently, following his Weibo. He's bound to get a lead role if he's interested in playing a lead role, though. He's pretty highly rated right now.

Oh, I absolutely adore Liu Tao/NiHuang. I just feel that most romance on screen is staged. Most of the time, they end up together because they were supposed to.

Hu Ge has a lot of bromances, not surprisingly. His personality is so playful and from what people say, he cares deeply for his friends. Wang Kai, too. In all the shows of Wang Kai that I've watched so far, he has great bromance with someone. I feel that Wang Kai.. he's sort of like that friend/person who'll hold your coat/get your water/reach out for you? Like, a bit timid - kinda like a follower;; it's hard to put in words.

    HQG makes me roll my eyes; it's such a Mary Sue story ><;

What struck me as a little weird was that Jingyan, or the way Wang Kai portrayed him, cries in private/so much and he looks on the verge of tears every time Lin Shu was mentioned yet he had almost no reaction when he finally knew that MCS was Lin Shu. I definitely don't expect a tearful reunion, but it needs something more than just a blank expression.

The producer & director did say that they left the relationship between Jingyan and MCS purposefully vague and held it back so that people can leave what it was up to their imagination, though.

I think those longing looks, understanding smiles and inside jokes mean a lot more than blatant "I love you"/"I can't live without you". Like, it feels so much... more connection. Whether it's romance or not, it just carries so much more weight.

    @lilhanh

What I really want to see was the interview/show where Hu Ge says that Jingyan/Wang Kai was his/MCS's best pair and he says 'I want you'. I can't find it anywhere, though.

Do you want any translation for that one?

I think that drug really kills him, so he is really dead. Even if the drug doesn't kill him, he doesn't exactly have very long to live (1-2 years with expert medical care).

What I find interesting is the amount of attention given to "CP" ("couple", usually used to refer to m/m relations). It's frequently mentioned in interviews and the actors themselves acknowledges it. It is less of a... thing in American entertainment. I think it's cute that Wang Kai sends Hu Ge tidbits he sees on Cheng x Tai (their characters in The Disguiser) though.

  12. Voice at 28:30;; ...So what kind of chemical reaction will Wallace's presence bring?  (He literally said "chemical reaction")

    @lilhanh

28:38 Lady: So that was (first guy's name). Right now, we have another person willing to provide information, but it seems that this person is truly hidden in the crowd--- Who can it be? ~massive cheering~ Welcome Wallace Huo! Head over to welcome him up. ~~ Been a while since we met!

    29:06 - A lot of greetings
29:12: Hu Ge: Today I'm too happy
Wallace: Today, I came especially early.. I could have came later, (Hu Ge: I know) but I didn't even eat dinner in order to make it here - I was afraid I wouldn't make it in time (Hu Ge: I coincidentally ordered an extra dinner box, left it for you)
Hu Ge: Is there anyone else? If there is anyone else they'll have to sit on the armrest.
Lady: He can't help himself (Hu Ge: Me or him?)
Lady: Him! He was supposed to be on part 3, but so many people already gave him up.
Lady: So how do you view this person?
Wallace: So in my mind/heart's view, he is this kind of.... Can I say it? (Hu Ge: Say it~ Every one keeps asking but they say it anyway~).. I just feel that he is (Lady: You don't need the mic, Wallace: I don't need the mic? Hu Ge: Stop pretending, Lady: Too naughty) I feel very comfortable around him. We don't see each other for long, but since knowing him, I feel as though he is a very considerate person. He doesn't make friends casually and he doesn't frequently hang out with you. But either he doesn't become your friend or he truly uses his heart. We weren't very close before and we aren't really the kind of people who are naturally warm but we understood each other through our  attitude toward our job.  Because I think we have this similarity (Hu Ge: Slow to warm up to people) .. slow to warm up to people but willing to endure hardship. Like, if acting calls for us to fight, Hu Ge is even cooler, he does flips, and he knows how to use the sword. I remember in Paladin 3, the director gave him a super hard move, but he excelled it. Everyone applauded. I was like ;too powerful;.
Lady: So do you meet outside of work?
Hu Ge: Very little (Lady: very little)  But I went to his home before
    Lady: Is his home messy?
    Hu Ge: No, very clean.

Guy: Once when he went to feed them, he fed them with two cats on his shoulder and the rest following him.
Lady: Sounds like a weird person, his home is minimalistic, with all these cats. How did you get the cats?
Hu Ge: One was a gift. One I adapted from someone. Two were birthed by those two. The last once, I found.
33:00 Guy on screen:  Hu Ge is a person who loves animals. He is a loving person. Every time he goes acting, he brings his cats. He loves his cats. He has a lot of cats. I wonder if he is a man or cat. And then I found out, he likes to secretly train his body in his room. Is that funny?
Hu Ge: It's like this. I was acting (title) with him and he lived in the room across from me. He closed his door, but I can hear his grunting through the door. It gives me some kind of motivation/feels like a challenge. So in my own room, I train myself and make grunting sounds back.

Also: Edit: For anyone who understands Chinese, THIS is too funny. xDD This even more so.

  13. @IMOmusings My understanding from reading Vietnese is much less than my understanding of reading Chinese. =3 I'll stick with the chinese version, thank you ;D

Well, the Nihuang/LinShu is added in to appeal to the mass audience, who simply loves a dose of romance in everything. I really like the character of Nihuang, so I can't complain too much. I suppose they also wanted to keep the show in the melodramatic/dark/brooding tone, with some hints of dry humor rather than add in something lighthearted that'll disrupt the balance.

  14. I feel as though this drama ruined the historical image of the Empress, turning Meilang into an innocent Mary Sue who just happened to have the whole world against her, only winning by luck and being innocent. Everything just happened to turn out brilliantly for Meilang while she la-le-la-le through life. It's unrealistic and it damages the real Empress Wu's reputation of power and intelligence.

Even if they didn't want to show Meilang as evil and cruel, they could show her as more mature and scheming.

  15. @IMOmusings I think I am going to read the novel as soon as my Chinese picks up. I might read English translations first but the metaphoric and poetic values tend to get lost in translation. Do you have links to either version, in either language?

I'm very fond of the war and politics manipulations in the drama, though I wished there was a little more on what happened in the past. Those few flashbacks were not enough to really carry the impact, although I still appreciate the friendship-sentiment.

In general, I don't like most romance depicted on television. It's too obvious that the actors are acting, everything is scripted and the special chemistry is just not there.

  16. @Carmarie: But won't it make sense for Jingyan begin his investigations earlier on, since he's been suspicious the entire time and all these hints are being tossed at him? I love the guy, but I really don't know if he can survive Chinese court and politics without Lin Shu xD

And yes, I love Meichang Su too. =3= I like Hu Ge playing this kind of character more than carefree characters. He plays it off with a hint of his usual self and it shines through in the best moments.

Oh! And Nirvana in Fire also reminds me of 勇敢的心 for anyone who wants to check out something else. It's a anti-Japanese era show & 勇敢的心 has a very calm main character who outsmarts everyone else one by one. It's kind of slow, but I love my calm chessmaster characters =D

That said, I think I am completely out of good things to watch T______T I attempted that popular romance-fantasy drama, Journey of Flower and all I can say is -shudders-. I like stuffs with action/psychological plot and minimal romance.

  17. Ah, I give up on this show after ep 15 xD It's definitely romance-focused rather than having physical/psychological plot and action I like to see. So far, it's all about how the world revolves around her; every other character either loves her, in love with her or hates her guts. Also, she's pretty Mary Sue in the sense that she never loses and she's always this hero-martyr figure. Boring.

  18. @40somethingahjummahttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YGg9Bj6PXUo

That's first episode of the Detective show and it goes all to 35 =3 I don't think it gets that complicated, but it has a lot of things going on.

Aww, but Wang Kai's characters are adorable. I love his characters, hehe. It's funnier to see how comparatively animated he is in real life. xD

Eh. Still not really, but I guess it's not uncommon for things to make sense in one language and lose it meaning, even through a direct translation.

He needs some slack, though I would appreciate less angst and tears from him. xD It's like, the bells were ringing since they first met, but Jingyan hears nothing until it smacks him in the face. Wang Kai did say it's the kind of character that wouldn't fare too well in real life.

I don't like 30-40 shows, but my mother does. And they tend to have more plot and action than romance, so it's better than most shows out there.

  19. I understand it...but please don't forget, that she is only 16 years old then. she only know her fahter, never hand friends...For me that explane, why she is so naive and that make her adorable. This is really a important part, that is why we all suffer with her, when she started to understand, that people aren't always nice to you, when you are nice with her! When did children stop to be naive? Thene when they start to social with the world - learn, that people not always are nice.

In the end of the drama - HQG said: I only want a simple life - but life forced me the other way!

I don't know how old you are outsanitybut I myself are over 40 now. When I look back, in my 20th I was still naive...untill I got hurt from my best friend!

Yeah, she is only 16 and she's very impressive for a 16 year old.

I'm in my early twenties; Don't get me wrong, I know I'm naive/inexperienced when it comes to society and people. However, I don't enjoy watching naive characters. Rather than see it as adorable, I find that kind of happy naivety rather hard to identify with. I guess it's because I'm pretty quiet/serious.

    -

I think my favorite character is officially 杀阡陌 xD

  20.

Edit: The main girl character is already getting on my nerves big time...

Do you mean HQG? Why you don't like her? I am a bit confuse... because the most of us here love her character!

I really don't like naive and overly-dramatic characters that make up a majority of main female leads.

It seems like she got a little better over the last 6 episodes, though. Half watching, half fast-forwarding.
