    Pachinko (Apple TV+)
While this beautiful and absorbing multi-generational drama based on Min Jin Lee's book of the same name didn't get completely snubbed — the series received one nomination, for Outstanding Main Title Design — it deserved so many more. Had enough voters actually watched, Oscar-winner Youn Yuh-jung would be celebrating her first Emmy nomination this morning at the very least. —KB

What does that mean "Had enough voters actually watched Pachinko? "

    Who selects the nominees?

Apparently I have different taste, after watching all LMH dramas several times, my favourite now is Pachinko and Personal Taste, LOL. I loved him in romcom, so happy that we will have Ask The Star soon!  :partyblob:

While Pachinko, him as Hansu was just iconic and legendary, with Hansu he proved that he has range to play unconventional type of characters too. I wish he will also do more 'dark type of roles' like this again!

I do like him in Pachinko but he has so little screen time that it cannot be my best LMH.  I like City Hunter best because that was when I started to like him even though my first LMH was BOF but I did not fall under the GJP spell :joy:

I think I must have missed something but why are dinosaurs mentioned in relation to Ask the Stars.

DCinside always seem to get LMH fabulous gifts- but who are they. Are they his main fanclub in SK?

Something that has bothered me a bit  is that there have been no recent photos of Choco. I hope the little dog is ok. LMH has had him for a long time hasn’t he.

Just rewatching Faith - why that wasn’t a bigger success is a mystery to me- it’s so good.

Faith wasn't a well made drama and there were many changes along the way.  I noticed that they filmed some scenes with LMH wearing a different hairstyle that fans criticized so they changed his hairstyle and re-filmed all the scenes :joy:

The director had spent most of the money on special effects and a different actor. When LMH came on, a portion of the production costs had already been used up.  There were accusations of plagiarism and a host of other problems.  It was a problem from the start.  They had to cut on crew, special effects and thus the drama looked low budget.  The drama was loved mainly because of LMH and KHS.  They had great chemistry.  Fans loved LMH as CY as the innocent, yet devoted, loyal and simple man, who had no interest in wealth or fame.  The pure love CY had for the doctor really pulled at the heartstrings of women all over who wanted their own CY.  It brought peace to a lot of fans who had personal troubles.  LMH had bad experience with Faith, it was summer very hot, and he had to wear armor.  He said he lost pounds while filming the drama.  It wasn't pre-produced so a lot was rushed too.  He commented once on a Japanese interview that he had never wanted to return to the filming location but he did during the Japanese interview about Faith.  Later after learning how it consoled many of his fans, it became his favorite drama (?) I think he said that but not 100% certain

have an idea.  How about we all change our avatar to a dinosaur in support of ATS?  Should we do it soon as we put it together or wait until the drama airs?  Should we all have the same dinosaur or choose our own?

Wait till drama airs, different dinosaurs

What fabulous shots of LMH and Gong Hyo-Jin. They look so relaxed and happy to be working together. I think I remember reading ages ago that she said he was one of actors she most wanted to work with. Whatever he appears in Minho seems to make it an enjoyable experience for everyone around him.

Isn’t it great to know how well BOF and now The Heirs are doing around the world.

If only one of the streamers would show City Hunter.

Yes, I read that comment that she wanted to act with him.  They seem to have chemistry and are comfortable with each other.  That is important.  Looking forward to the series

    [Friday Flashback] City Hunter

Why You Should (Or Shouldn’t) Watch City Hunter:

I’m just going to get this out of the way right now: this is — hands down — my favorite Lee Min-ho drama. I think it is largely due to the fact that this role is so vastly different from his others. Yeah, he’s still a little too perfect to be true (with a face like that, it’s hard not to be, am I right?) but his character in City Hunter is less polished and more dynamic than his other roles. Instead of playing the careless rich playboy, his character uses that persona as a cover for his real identity: a kickass warrior — with a soft spot for the weak and helpless — bent on avenging his father’s murder. It adds a whole new element to his character’s personality that’s immensely appealing.

The heroine of City Hunter is just as interesting. At first, she appears to be another Candy type, working an endless list of part-time jobs to save for her comatose father’s medical bills, but not long after we meet her, she gets a job as a secret service agent at the Blue House. How badass is that? I’m a sucker for a leading lady who can kick butt, and the scenes where she spars against Yoon-sung as part of their inter-departmental feud are a fun extension of their bickering and a flex of her skills — even if Yoon-sung lets her win to maintain his non-threatening playboy cover story.

Although there is a romantic side-plot between Yoon-sung and Nana, the core story focuses on Yoon-sung’s revenge against the five men who ordered his father (and his fellow soldiers) to be executed after completing an unsanctioned assassination mission in North Korea. The lone surviving soldier, Lee Jin-pyo (Kim Sang-joong), kidnapped baby Yoon-sung and raised him to possess all the skills necessary to hunt and kill the men responsible.

Despite the harsh conditions of upbringing, though, Yoon-sung never developed the heart of a killer to go along with his martial arts and shooting skills. So instead of murdering the five men — and quickly putting them out of their misery — Yoon-sung goes against his adoptive father’s wishes and plans to systematically expose their corruption and ruin their public images one-by-one. Buuuut… well, let’s just say his attempts to take the moral high ground with his vengeance don’t go according to plan.

And that’s part of this drama’s appeal. Our protagonists and antagonists are more gray than your typical “good guys” and “bad guys,” and the complexity of these characters leads to some unpredictable — and often emotional — situations.

Our hero is a vigilante out for revenge, but his heart is pure and his motives are misguided. And the man whose betrayal hit Jin-pyo the hardest, is not the evil and corrupt politician that you want to see crash and burn. As far as revenge plots go, this one is tightly-written, multi-faceted, and presented in a way that is interesting to the audience.

So, does City Hunter stand the test of time? Well, I’m biased — I love a thriller with a side of romance — but I think it holds up extremely well. To be fair, it’s also the most recent Friday Flashback I’ve covered so far. So I feel obliged to acknowledge that it’s still relatively new enough to have benefited from more modern cinematography styles and avoided the clichés of the early 2000s that are both a bit distracting and cringeworthy many years later. Even so, I would say City Hunter has aged better than some of its more recent genre counterparts (and if this sounds like I’m throwing a little shade at the recently concluded revenge drama Again My Life, it’s because I am.)

It’s also worth mentioning the great fighting and action choreography, which is not only fun to watch, but will stick with you years later. I’m looking at you spoon scene. (If you know, you know.)

It is one of my favorite too, he is so bad-RickRoll'D here.  It is a shame it is hard to find it nowadays after DramaFever was bought off.  Viki should try to get it.  Netflix showed it a long time ago.

AppleTV is campaigning LMH, YYJ and KMH as supporting actors for Emmys. I read somewhere it's AppleTV who would decide which actors for which awards to campaign/promote for Emmys. Perhaps they thought these actors have better chance of getting nomination in supporting roles instead of lead roles.

You can order the magazine from this link @CallieP

    https://www.emmys.com/emmy-magazine/back-issues/issue-4-2022

Thanks for the link, I was  looking through it and I realized that the Pachinko part is just an insert (promotional advertisement for the various Apple TV series touting great performances from the actors.)  It was not the cover page of the magazine.  I thought from the earlier posting from twitter, that  it was the cover page and I thought there might be an article about Pachinko.   Well hopefully, in the future they might have Pachinko on the cover page.

“Step inside some of the best supporting performances of the year”

    Pachinko: Lee Minho

@syntycheOMG, the Emmy's magazine recognized LMH.  Did it really state that LMH is one of the best supporting performances for 2022???  He headlines Pachinko and considered lead but in terms of screen time, it is quite minimal except for episode 7.  Is the Emmy's considering him as a favorite for supporting actor then?  That is very interesting.  Do you know more about this, syntyche or @willette

How can we order a copy of this Emmy Magazine?

Re the negative comments that Willinette and Nina both mentioned especially the one “only famous in Korea” . What a laugh- Apart from all of us on here who live all over the globe I also remembered a few years back MYM publishing all the countries that Members of his fan club live. I think it was over a hundred places.

The success of Pachinko and Hansu must be a bitter pill for his antis to swallow!!!
A funny thing happened here on Netflix. For ages BOF carried the message that it would end on May 1st- and it did. But it was put back on on May 2nd!
I wonder if people who liked him in Pachinko were searching for other dramas with him in.

I wish Netflix would put City Hunter on. No OTT seem to have it.

Hope you all have a great weekend.

Lindy, Netflix did have City Hunter years ago, together with BOF.  I had just seen BOF in Netflix and then CH popped up as a recommendation.  After seeing that, I was hooked, CH was the drama that made me interested in LMH,  I also started other dramas after running out of LMH dramas.  Some on Soompi had started requesting CH from Netflix  but no response :rage:.  DramaFever had all of LMH's dramas but then it was bought out and shut down. :rage:  Grrr!  I suspect but no proof that it was Amazon that bought DramaFever.  If you go to Amazon prime and search for SK dramas including CH, it shows up but when you click on it, it says not currently available. Strange.

  10. Episode 8: I loved the conversation between Hansu and Noa.  Father and son scene was a gem. The little kid who plays Noa is really excellent.  He speaks Japanese and Korean.. When he translated for Sunday during the conversation with the Japanese man and his daughter was another great scene.  Then when Noa chased after Isak, another awesome scene.

The part where Sunja went out to sell her kimchee, from being awkward to being comfortable at the end was will acted.

The finale with the real Sunja was an excellent ending for Episode 8.

  11. https://tvline.com/lists/emmys-lead-actor-drama-dream-nominations-2022/brian-cox-succession/

This Emmy selection by TVline that was posted earlier by Nina or Syntyche,  as I  read through the link, I  noticed that TVline's dream nominees were only seven  per group.  Best Drama included Pachinko and best actor LMH.  No one else in Pachinko made the line up.  There was best supporting male nominations but not best supporting female .  It is a real honor that TVline felt that LMH was one of the top 7 best actors for a drama series. He had such a small role but he was noticed.

Golderby.com is another site that included LMH, as well as IndieWire.  I guess LMH will be on all Emmy Nominations lists even though in Variety, he is #15. The fact that he is even in the list is an achievement compared to the time he has in the series .  :partyblob::wow2:

As soon as I finished post-production, which was also a long process, the Apple team was like, “So you don’t think it’s going to take another four years do you?” I could hear the fear in their voices. I know the responsibility. Once you present a show, you have to be on a cycle or else you’ve lost your audience. And I think so much heavy lifting was done in conceiving of the show that the second season will hopefully go much faster.

Yes, I definitely hope it does not take 4 years, maybe end of 2023.  I also hope Hansu has a greater presence.  Too little of Hansu in Season 1 and too much Solomon in my opinion.  Hansu is a more interesting figure, a Rhett Butler as mentioned in an article above.  Hope LMH diversifies too while filming Pachinko. He can do two projects, after finishing his scenes, he can start on another project.

I agree. There was a power imbalance.  He took advantage of her naivety.  He betrayed her trust.  The fact that he proposed what he did to her afterwards, that he would just provide for her in the future but he would never marry her meant that he never did intend to marry her.  That was his plan all along and he thought she would just go along with it.  He thought money and security for her future would solve everything.  He did not factor in her moral fibre and strength of character.

And that’s why Isak’s act of marrying her despite knowing her circumstances was so extraordinary.  He gave the baby a name (his surname) and a family.  He returned respectability to SunJa so she could live openly again.  Not the life of shame (of being a mistress and a “kept woman”) that HanSu offered her.  So who was the bigger man at the tailor’s shop?  Not the man with wealth and status.  But the man who did the right thing, and lived with authenticity.

The book outlines Isak’s act of sacrifice much more poignantly (source - https://www.litcharts.com/lit/pachinko/characters/baek-isak)

Agree that Isak is the better person but he is a pastor, a religious person and he realizes he would be dead if her mother did not nurse him to health.  This is the way he can return the favor, he also realized the strength behind Sunja and he wanted a strong woman next to him.  So for these reasons he proposed to Sunja.

Baby Noa is a gem! He's got some feistiness, from both parents, I guess. I like that scene too, with him and the kid

Yes, baby Noa is feisty.  My favorite scenes is Hansu at the tailor and Hansu with Noa.  I also like the scene where Sunja realizes that Hansu is married and will not marry her.

Still doesn't change the fact that he is a cheater and Sunja would have never dated him if she knew he was married. He tricked her.

Don't think he cheated, he doesn't really lie.  He assumed she knew, but why would he think she did though?  Pretty naive on his part.  He did cheat on his wife though but I don't think she is surprised.  He is probably a womanizer.

Saw some on Twitter asking for LMH to be the adult Noa.  That would be great.  Don't expect him to get a lot of screen-time though as Hansu so I hope he doesn't wait for Season 2 to be on TV before he starts his next project, movie or series. Solomon got a greater role of all the male leads and I really don't care for Solomon.

Lee Min-ho goes for more in film and TV after Pachinko

“I'm not completely satisfied with my career,” confesses the Korean drama star with complete ease. His impetus led him to expand further into this perception of himself when asked how he analyzes the performance he has had in recent years: “I could have been more prolific, I would hope I had been in more productions. So in the future I want to be in more stories, more productions and have a longer filmography.”

    Infobae

In addition to “Pachinko”, actor Lee Min-ho is known for starring in “The King: Eternal Monarch”, “Boys Over Flowers”, “The Heirs” and more South Korean dramas. (Reuters/Aude Guerrucci)

Pachinko marks his first time in a title originally produced by a digital platform, however, it is not his debut in the streaming world. In fact, he was recently seen on The King: Eternal Monarch, which was released through the South Korean channel SBS and Netflix. In his native country, he has been quite a phenomenon for more than a decade for his participation in I Am Sam, Boys Over Flowers, City Hunter, Faith, The Heirs and more successful k-dramas.

The first three episodes ofPachinko will be released on 25 March in the Apple TV+.

Yes we totally agree, :joy:, we too wish you had been more prolific in the past.  We, fans,  totally support you in your hopes of having a longer filmography, more stories, more productions in the future so start keeping busy.  Do at least two productions a year, a drama, a movie, or two series per year.  After "Ask the stars", plan for the next series. :D

Synthyche,  Nina   and everyone else who have been keeping us up to date with Pachinko and LMH news- thank you so much. It’s been wonderful

to read the responses to episode 7. At last people are realising what

we have known for years- he is a great actor.

Unfortunately Netflix in my country now only have The Heirs and TKEM

on ( they are finishing BOF on May 1st) so there is not a lot of LMH for new fans to see. I know they are on Viki but it’s not a well known streamer is it?

Is anyone else on here slightly bothered by him doing Ask The Stars.

I see that MYM’s name is on the front page of the script ( see page 4215 post from GTLmh0622) which I assume means they may have put money into the project so they must really believe in it. But I worry that we may

be going back to the numerous product placements and to the ridiculous comments about ratings which happened with TKEM.

In the meantime episode 7 has scored a marvellous 9.2 so far on IMDB. Please if you have the time go onto IMDB and rate it.

ATS has I think 20 episodes, I hope he is in a lot of the scenes since we had to starve for two whole years and apart for Episode 7, he appears very minimally in Pachinko.  Since MYM is involved as a producer, he must be excited to do it.  I think it is a comedy and after LOTBS, you know he has comedic timing.  We get to see him act as a doctor, another wish come true.  I do hope the advertisements are done discreetly  and not in your face though.  Some other dramas had a lot of PPL too.  PPL is okay as long as it is not obvious, just some product placement in the background.  I hope they learnt from that.

It seems that he will do more seasons in Pachinko if it continues.  He gets to be an anti-hero there so ATS would be a diversion and fun drama.  Let's leave it as that.

As Su herself admits, many people are unaware of these painful implications, so it's doubly impressive that this chapter can shed some light on it, as well as give Hans the extra story he needs.

“Hansoo is difficult to understand until the seventh episode,” says actor Lee Min Ho, “because he acts in a certain way and talks in a certain way that people might not like.

"So in that regard, I think episode seven is a big deal, because it's only when people watch it that they can really understand why he talks in a certain way and why he acts and makes decisions in a certain way."

Su tells us that she intentionally chose to film the episode in "an old-fashioned 4:3 cinematic aspect ratio" rather than the usual 2:35 widescreen aspect ratio because "we didn't want to portray the devastation in an aesthetically beautiful way. "

The goal was to convey a sense of claustrophobia to Hans in the face of something extremely powerful and deadly. “To really get into the horror of what happened, we wanted everything to be very low-key,” adds Hugh.

And yet, while inviting us to Hansoo's trauma first-hand, Chapter 7 also reimagines his relationship with Sunja, revealing it in a much less restrained way.

“I personally remember the scenes where I was on the rock with Sunja,” says Lee Min Ho. “Where she cleans her clothes. There, Hansoo talked about his past and childhood.

“I think that moment was an emotional healing for me. Because for Hansoo, he hid his past and childhood from everyone and that was something he didn't really explore. But through Sunya, for the first time, he sort of let go, and he really spoke about his childhood and his past.”

This brings us back to the idea that Su needed to "breathe another life" into his version of the novel. And she fully accomplished that goal, not only with Hansoo's tragic backstory, but with the wider story of how this earthquake affected real-life Korean immigrants.

Looking back, it is now impossible to imagine the history of Pachinko without her.

    1 hour ago, syntyche said:

@CarolynH, @CallieP great insights on the episode!

I think what we have seen on episode 7 is a precursor of Hansu's transformation into the ruthless merchant that we know him of. Going through the tragic loss of his father, seeing his hopes for a better life in America get shattered in an instant, and witnessing firsthand the cruelty on his fellowmen, all in the same day, were enough to traumatize him. That is enough to trigger him to shift his view of the world and do what it takes to survive.

Ryoichi does seem nice to him. "A father's love is a noble thing," he says, so I wouldn't be surprised if he became Hansu's father figure now that he's an orphan (no mention of his mother, right?) But at the same time, we see Ryoichi, the leader of the Yakuza, who was bent on punishing Hansu's father, who "needs to maintain order, even if it's just an illusion." In Japan, the Yakuza, a Mafia-like criminal organization of Japanese gangsters, is known for its ruthlessness. And as Ryoichi says that Hansu could be one of them if he works harder, I think striving to be a member of the Yakuza is the reason why Hansu hardened up to be ruthless, which the group calls for. Hansu is Korean by blood, and he would need to work extra harder to actually run businesses tied with the Japanese group. His father once said, "a person only needs to be good at one thing." Hansu chose to be with the Yakuza, and if that means being ruthless and cynical to be good at it, then he'll do exactly that.

It is true, to be bombarded with loss, destruction and murder of your kind in trumped up accusations, all in a day, can be very traumatic for an idealistic and hopeful young adult.  Even with a tough childhood, his father was there to protect and guide him.  It was also the same that that his father took money without permission and is about to face dire consequences.  Possibly all that in one day is enough to change anyone.  He could have gone crazy and hopeless but with Ryoichi there, there is a path forward for him, to be one of them,  and to do what it takes to survive and be powerful.

Hansu did suffer from claustrophobia in the streets of Yokohama when walking behind the Holmes.  He was disorientated and ringing in ears.  Terrified when he saw his fellowmen burnt alive in the barn.  It was all too much for him.  In a way his father had always been his buffer when you see his breaking down many times and having to pull himself together and not give in to despair.  He was lucky in a way to have Ryoichi.  Read somewhere that the Yakuzas were the most humane at that time (wonder if it is really true)  which is surprising since Yakuzas are gangsters and known for their brutal and ruthless acts.
