But on this second rewatch, WX still addresses him as “Thian Siah”. Isn’t that Crown Prince, or is that Royal Highness?

殿下 (diànxià) refers to "Your Highness/Your Royal Highness," an honorific form of addressing anyone from a royal family, such as a prince (or princess, consort, etc), not necessarily a crown prince. It is also used to address rulers, and in which case, it would be "Your Majesty."

I was rewatching the leaked ending

It is apparently not a "leaked ending," but a fanmade ending with edits that are probably true in part. Monday is near, we will know then. Can't wait! :)

I also tried Ming Dynasty. I couldn’t quite see the chemistry between the OTP, and gave up after the 5th episode.

I know what you mean. It took me about 10 eps before I could feel that OTP. :P:P

    Spoiler

I think Tang Wei/Ruowei's styling as a "man" and her hairdo as a rebel lady aren't well-done (surprisingly by award-winning Chang Suk Ping, although she does look much better as Empress Sun). Zhu Yawen/Zhu Zhanji's styling is fine, except that in some scenes, his hair is quite disheveled, not sure if that's due to styling or filming condition. However, they are both my bias, and I like that era, the plot and the cast. TBH, I really needed a distraction from the angst/torment in RN. lol.

Now (the drama, its witty language and) they (the OTP) grow on me. I could count over a dozen scenes to date where they and their lines moved me (and from postings of Cnetz, them, too)  Love it!

How are viewers supposed to root for a character who brought a tragic ending onto himself?

This is so true. It would be very difficult if the ending were to follow the novel to a T. Thankfully, the screenwriter and PD have promised viewers a different and more satisfying ending.

Although I feel it's too little too late at this point, it would still be way better than the original (novel) ending. Of course, no thanks to the censors for messing up (to quite an extent) this wonderful drama. If left alone in its original schedule of 72 episodes instead of editing and cutting down to 60, it would have been a much better presentation of an otherwise good, interesting plot, as well as allowing some characters/incidents to develop more plausibly and satisfactorily. Still an awesome drama and a good watch for anyone who's still sitting on the fence.

I'm still way behind, stuck at (ep 23) the wedding of CP with his Crown Princess (but couldn't stop myself from sneak peeks at spoilers lol). That's a very beautiful wedding, and would have been so much more beautiful and satisfying if the bride were Wenxi. :(

Love this drama a lot. However, at this point (based on spoilers/teasers/comments), perhaps the screenwriter/PD could have overplayed their "angst/torment factor where OTP is concerned." I hope it won't be too little too late. I'm still looking forward to PD/screenwriter's "promised satisfying ending (as opposed to novel's original ending)." I hope nothing will derail them with another alternate version.

    Btw...

    Spoiler

Ming Dynasty, with Zhu Yawen and Tang Wei, is quite a different nice cup of tea - a quicker pace, a more pronounced growth in characters' (esp. OTP) development, some humor and comic infused in action and language, just as beautifully presented in terms of costumes, rites and etiquette, etc - if anyone is looking for something else to partake post-RN. d(^∇^)b

There was speculation it could also have been written by Wenxi.

Do you have a screenshot of what the screenwriter said? I didn’t manage to see that comment on her Weibo.

I thought it could be WX's too. But there's that jade belt which belongs to CP. It looks more like CP's note to his royal father.

No, I didn't take any screenshot. I'll try to look for it and take one for ya.

we should not rely on the novel's plot points too much.

You're right. We should not. The drama is already very different from the novel, and also has new characters added, while changing some characters' development in the plot. Actually, the screenwriter (original author) has said there will be differences from the outset.

    14 hours ago, bluehibiscus said:

I found further confirmation it should be a happy ending. At the forum, the director asked for a show of hands on the ending preferred. More people chose happy ending and he said they should find the current version of the ending satisfactory. My heart is at ease.

    Haha. Mine too :)

The screenwriter has hinted at a different ending (than her novel's) in her weibo sometime ago. Now that the director has also hinted at a different ending, I feel better. However, I hope the different ending would still flow nicely and logically with the plot. After all, CP and WX are ingrained in Confucian values. For them to sacrifice (novel) themselves for country, family or love is not implausible. It is actually very common in that era.

I am really curious to find out how this 'different ending' will be tweaked. In the theme OST MV, we see this note (below) ...

    Spoiler

which I read is from CP. Some cnetizen said it's his "last" note. I can't remember having read about it in the novel. I tried to look for such a note in the novel, but didn't find any. To those who are up to date with the latest episode, has it appeared in the drama? If it has, which episode?  (I'm still pretty far behind, only at 14. Thanks in advance.)

Good to know. Thank you for the heads up. I have a long way to get there though. Anyhow, I'm ready for more sadness and tears from this CP and OTP. The cinematic quality and the beauty of the Song culture as showcased are the two factors, among many others, that make this a must-watch.

  7. I love all of the released OST tracks, and the BGM! The lyrics of the tracks are especially good and a cut above most. At the end of episode 11, the second version of ending OST is introduced. It's so beautiful! Sa Dingding (薩頂頂) never fails to bring out her best in her songs. Zhou Shen (周深) is another awesome artiste. He has such an 'unexpected' singing style (uniquely female for a male) and is so good at it. Kim Ji Mun( 金志文), another awesome track from him. Btw, he's a Korean ethnic singer from China.

Looking forward to more OST tracks (hope there will be more)!

I want to catch up with 12 to 23 (to date) so badly, but thought I/we needed a respite from all the sadness and tears. Even though I am kinda prepared with what's to come, I still hope for more happiness and kindness, and screen time, for our CP and OTP.

Probably the most heart-wrenching CP and OTP to date.

Can someone please explain to me the airing schedule for this drama on YouTube? I looked at the schedule on Youku, but it doesn't match up. Are they not airing one episode every day now on YouTube? Is it because they're still editing the drama due to censorship or are they already done? I was expecting episode 10 to be released today since 7,8, and 9 was released the previous day's.

Yes, the schedule on Youku has changed. So has that of Youtube, and the others since they are all dependent on Youku's releases, as well as their respective contractual agreement.

The latest - hot off the press as of today - is as below:

From 12.2 (coming Monday - China), Youku VIPs/paid subscribers will get 4 episodes every Mon and Thurs. For others/free viewers, 3 episodes will be available every Thurs. As for the schedule on Youtube, no information is made available yet.

The original novel had a sad ending! Not sure if the drama ending will change though.

You'll be missing out on a laudable production and performance. Its production has received much praise for its care for details - in costumes, music, props, rites and etiquette, for instance  - and the cast for its great performances, ever since it premiered. This OTP pairing - Li Yitong and Luo Jin - is also pretty awesome. They have excellent chemistry:wub:. I love every episode thus far, especially the near-authentic Song Dynasty influence that the production brings forth. I'm so glad it hasn't been taken off the air abruptly as was feared by many:sweatingbullets:, though there has been a change in its schedule.

    Spoiler

About the novel, the ending is indeed truly heartbreaking. The title in itself is already a big hint at its content. It is still a very good read, and the penmanship is profound. The author happens to be the screenwriter as well. She has mentioned somewhere (can't remember exactly but I think in weibo) that differences between her novel and its drama adaptation are inevitable and to be expected (as can already be seen). If I remember correctly, she hinted at a somewhat different kind of ending. We can only wait and see how her adapted screenplay will turn out. So far, so good. :)

    Love the OSTs

Thanks for sharing -- though some have shared the scheduling, the calendar really gives perspective to how long it will take to finish this drama. 3 months! Not sure if this works with them. One episode per day isn't really common in Cdramas, no? I wonder how they will keep people's interest in it. On another note, if Sword of  starts to broadcast this coming December, she'll have three airing dramas around the same time

You're welcome. Yes, it does take a while. Yes, one a day is uncommon. But it does build anticipation, doesn't it? IMO, it does. I guess it also gives netizens more time to discuss the intricacies involved. Although there's also the danger of viewers losing interest. With such a high quality production based on a highly acclaimed (excellent) novel and screenplay by none other than the author herself, plus the stellar casting, I doubt viewers' interests will easily drop. Esp. for die-hard fans of historicals, of LJ and LYT, etc.

I really like the twists and turns. It grips me so much that when I sit down to watch it, I can no longer multitask. lol. There's also the OTP. What a tease this PD is! Or is it the screenwriter (also the author)? I really can't wait for the OTP to have more screen time together. They are so good!

  16. Brace yourselves, The Legend of Hao Lan and historical C-drama lovers.

The following (non-contemporary, historical) genres of C-dramas and C-movies are restricted (限古令)  from broadcasting or webcasting from March to June (and more like indefinitely):

    1. Wuxia
    2. Fantasy
    3. Historical
    4. Legend
    5. Time-travel
    6. Biographical
    7. Palace struggle/intrigue

For dramas of above genres, if they haven't been shown, they would be till the finale. But, after that, they would all be wiped off from all (Chinese) internet platforms. Dramas such as 《独孤皇后 Queen Dugu》,《东宫 Goodbye my Princess》,《招摇 The Legends》,《倚天屠龙记 Heaven Sword and Dragon Sabre》,,《延禧攻略 The Story of Yanxi Palace》, 《芈月传 The Legend of Mi Yue》,and so on. In particular, dramas of historical, period costumes and palace struggle-related genres would all be restricted across the board.

    VAnFg2M.jpg

For dramas that are waiting for an on-air or live-stream schedule, either via broadcast or webcast, they would have to undergo another round of audit before approval, and before a new schedule of airing would be given. It is reported that most may not be on-air or on live-stream anytime sooner than two years later.

The most recent dramas that are affected:

《新白娘子传奇  The Legend of White Snake 2019》that was originally reported for premiere on 3.27.19 has now been rescheduled.

    Vvsqcuz.png

《我的波塞冬 My Poseidon》that was originally reported for premiere on 3.24.19 has also been rescheduled.

    CACp8Cw.jpg

    Also shelved, indefinitely, are:

    • 《帝王业 Monarch Industry》now 《江山故人》Zhang Ziyi's debut TV drama

    ac3fe67de0.jpg

    • 《大明皇妃·若传 The Empress of the Ming》Tang Wei and Zhu Yawe

    dN47RLY.jpg

    • 《九州斛珠夫人 (lit.) Novoland: Pearl Eclipse》Yang Mi

    QFGHiay.png

    • 《三生三世枕上 Eternal Love: The Pillow Book》Dilraba Dilmurat and Vengo Gao

    00-1532589175.jpg

    • 《狼殿下 The Wolf》Darren Wang Dalu, Sweet Li Qin and Sean Xiao Zhan

    R3YtSAl.jpg

    • 《锦衣之下 Under the Power》Allen Ren Jialun and Seven Tan Songyun

    Hkex7qQ.jpg

    • 《庶女锦兰 (lit.) Commoner Jin Lan》 Hu Ge and Cecelia Liu Shishi

    L2GmiH8.jpg

Historically, this is the strictest across the board restriction ever imposed by the CN authorities.

So, for those who are watching The Legend of Hao Lan (or any other drama within the genres affected), do complete your watching ASAP, before they are all taken down. While only the Chinese platforms are affected now, one never knows when the hammer will strike other non-Chinese platforms, like Youtube, Viki, etc.

PS: Unfortunately, the unlikely benefactor in this whole scheme of things may end up to be those illegal streaming sites.
