  1. Yes, I agree that realistically, they all

    Spoiler

died. What Chu Yue saw was her imagination, where she combined the names of the people for the kid, especially Shi San. The kid is also imaginary.

As drama watchers, most of us would wish for a happy ending for the main couple, and the characters who have become dear to us as we journeyed along the drama. Some bad drama endings may have left us feeling frustrated and betrayed, but I think that this drama’s sad ending was logically and realistically reasonable and acceptable for me. Enjoyed watching this and would recommend this to anyone who likes a good, romantic wuxia story.

  2. I’m also at episode 34. Some people who watched the VIP release of the remaining 6 episodes said to stop here if you want a happy ending. So happy to see that Ru Yi did not die, and the Princess A Ying has really grown in maturity and political awareness. The actress makes the character believable whether as a Princess or a Prince.

A Jiu is still a little brat ding donging back and forth between love sick psycho puppy and political manoevering with the Emperor to advance his position within the An Kingdom. He should get his act together if he wants to do something good for his kingdom.

I like watching the lovely relationship of Chu Yue and Shi San - the actress is doing a good job in showing the wonderous feelings of her falling in love with Shi San.

  3. I was expecting a sequel to Ancient Love Poetry, but no, they have changed the names of the High Gods, and there is no sign of Tian Qi, my favourite out of the 4. The basic story line in the novel is still intact - mission to recover the lost fragments of the new-born fire Phoenix. The drama added a master-servant bounded together spell, so there are plenty of laughs arising from the antics of the dissatisfied servant, A Yin.

Not familiar with the main lead actor, but of course, female lead Zhao Lu Si needs no introduction. No surprises from her here, she’s displaying her usual acting styles.  Happy to see ‘Yuan Shen’ here, also acted with Zhao Lu Si in Love in the Galaxy. He will provide much needed eye candy for me, since the main male lead is not really doing much for me (hope his fans don’t hate me, just a personal preference … heh heh)

  4. Just watched episode 1. Liu Shi Shi is as pretty as ever. Loved her in Bu Bu Jing Xin, and she doesn’t look a day older since the time she acted in that drama. And I was so happy to see her reunited with Ye Qing, Ruo Xi’s good friend, Yu Tan, in BBJX. LSS ‘s dancing is so nice to watch - after all, she graduated from Beijing Dance Academy.

So far so good. I am interested to continue watching. I am intrigued by Liu Yu Ning’s Ning Yuan Zhou and can’t wait to find out why he is just a lowly cook in the Wu army. The way he is carrying his wok is so cute!

    Anyone else watching this?

  5. Lots of slapping going on in the past few episodes … lol. It was satisfying to see the highly detestable Xue Shu getting slapped by her aunt, her father, the princess, but she managed to get her revenge on XN later by slapping her not once, but twice, and having her whipped. So now, the stage is set for XN and of course, XW to plot their revenge on her and the Xue Family. The Emperor will surely regret his decision to marry off his princess sister to the barbaric Da Yue when they turn around and attack Da Qian in the future.

Wondering how the convenience marriage of Luu Xian and Fang Yin are going … cute couple, hope they survive the bloody war and the drama shows them having a happy ever after.

  6.  I did not know that new episodes were out. What is the most up to date viewing schedule now?

Episodes 21 and 22 were quite exciting. XieWei’s original plan went all wrong.

First thing that went wrong was, he originally intended to go to the Tong Zhou Army himself, but Minister Gu proposed Zhang Zhe. If he objected, then it would incur the Emperor’s suspicion so he let it be. But XW was ready to sacrifice ZZ if he knew too much. Second thing that went wrong was, JXN was taken away with ZZ because she happened to run into him when she was at the jail to see YL. So, XW decided to go to Tong Zhou to save her on the pretext of checking the army base and rebels there but the Emperor ordered General Xue to support him. Since they were already going to be there, XW planned to have the rebels get rid of the Xue army. Unfortunately, General Xue ordered a retreat so that did not materialise. Now that ZZ already knows too much and has suspicion of XW’s involvement with the rebels, XW wanted to kill him. In order to protect JXN, XW ordered Xiao Bao to take her away to safety by poisoning her. She was supposed to stay at the inn to be rescued, but she realised that XW had lied about the Yong Ding medicinal hall being a ‘communications station’ when she checked it so she went to seek help at the Tong Zhou army. That got the army involved, and resulted in the Xue army retreating before they could be exterminated.

Xie Wei : Jiang Xue Ning!!! Aaaarrrrhh!!!

  7. In the original novel, JXN was the ‘evil’ woman who had schemed her way up to becoming the Empress. After her death, she was reborn as her younger self and what we are watching now is her attempts to change the outcome of the many lives she had sacrificed on her ascent to the top position.

However, the Chinese government forbids the dramatisation of rebirth or time travel, so the story was changed to that of the writer of the story being dissatisfied with how the story ended and rewriting it in Episode 1. So we are now watching the re-written story, with flashbacks to the original story shown in sepia tone.

Anyway, I am enjoying the drama so far but sometimes feel that it is quite rushed, like jumping from scene to scene. ZLH and BL are doing great. I have not watched up the part when Zhang Zhe appears so I am looking forward to seeing the actor again. I liked him a lot in the Scent drama.

  8. When the actor for Shi Zi appeared in episode 3, I knew this drama is sure going to be funny and entertaining. This actor has a talent for comedy. And the actress for the vegetable seller is also super funny. The way she drawls the vegetable names is hilarious. Watched up to episode 5. Lu Bu Ping is a mystery - don’t know his background yet. Also don’t know the motivations of old Master Guo, the medicinal hall doctor who willingly gives up 90% of his earnings to the Chun Family. The 4th Prince is for sure in love with Ke Ling, but how he is going to get his grandmother and his father, the Emperor, to accept her will be interesting to see.

    Anybody else watching this?

  9. @hush puppy I stopped after episode 6 and got engrossed in a novel and was trying to finish it. I’ve been following your recaps and thoughts on this drama though. Anyway, thanks to your reminder, I now resume watching this drama.

I like the actor for little brother, Zhi. He has many facial expressions which express his disdain, disgust, distaste, contempt, surprise, etc. it’s fun to look at him, and I’ll now look out for him in future dramas.

  10. Yes, I’m lurking here and there.    scared clannad after story GIF

I have not caught up to the latest episodes so I may be ‘behind’ in my comments.  This is a unique drama that is not based on any existing novel, so viewers can’t be ‘spoiled’ on the ending. Also, it is releasing one episode a day, which keeps viewers following it closely, unlike other dramas that break for a few days a week which affects the momentum.

Regarding the controversy on the Japanese elements in the drama, I agree with @hush puppy that ancient Chinese customs and influences were commonly ‘exported’ overseas, not only to Japan, but to Korea, Vietnam, etc. it is certainly an over-reaction by certain fanatic viewers. Look at most Chinese now wearing the Western suit and dresses - does it imply that they are admiring and emulating the West? ‘Westernisation’ much?

  11. Just started watching this. The costumes are very unique - pretty embroidery designs on the gowns. Xiang Yun looks very fresh and pretty - I like her hairdos styles. The actress has improved her acting since her last drama, Chong Zi, but there are still cringey moments here and there which I thought could have been done better. Ryan Ding is his usual self. The actor for the earnest, bumbling rock is cute. The actress for the servant of the cousin of Lu Chang Kong is really pretty. The cousin is pretty, too, but not as pretty as the servant … haha

Nevertheless, a watchable drama after finishing LYF. I read the novel some time ago - forgotten the details, but seem to remember that it was funnier in the novel.

  12. Episode 22 - XY is at a gathering with ladies from the rich families and high society

Lady A : Princess Xiao Yao, do you prefer painting or playing musical instrument?

    XY : I don’t know how.

B : Do you like writing couplets?

    XY : Don’t know how.

C : Do you like to play Go?

XY : Don’t know very well.

D : Your dress is very fashionable. Is it made by disciples of the Textiles Goddess?

    XY : Hmmm … Don’t know. …. Maybe? ….   Should be.

E : Your jewellery is so exquisite. Must be crafted by the famous Jing Tian maker?

XY : Er … Don’t know. My father gave it to me so I just wore it.

…………. All the ladies   :dizzy:      XY     :grimace:

Hard to make small talk with XY   :Megalol:

  13. Seems like only @mskololia1 and I are commenting on this drama. Not many people watching this?

After watching Episode 12, would you believe that all I can think of all day is Xiang Liu :naughty:? The fact that the voodoo love bug so easily transferred to him definitely means that he is deeply in love with Xiao Liu. But sadly, there is no future for them once Xiao Liu returns to Hao Ling, because of his loyalty to the Chi Rong army, and the Fang Feng family.

  14. Xiao Yao got lost because she left the mountain on her own after waiting so long for her father to come fetch her. Along the way, when running away from bad people and demons, she realised that she had the ability to change her appearance. However, she could not control the device well. The magical device had been embedded in her when she was young so she had not learnt how to control it yet.

I am enjoying this drama. I was impressed by the acting of the boy who acted as the young Cang Xuan. I’m sure I’ve seen before in some other drama. His crying and grief was so real. And did anyone else wonder about the ‘humble’ home that Xiao Liu and the others were living in? It was HUGE! And how do they survive when not a single customer came to their shop the entire time?

Despite my initial doubt, I must say I am satisfied with the actor’s portrayal of Xiang Liu - he is ‘charmingly’ wicked  :naughty:

  15. I enjoyed this drama. The kid is cute, no doubt about it. I was amazed at his ability to recite his lines. The lead couple are from the period drama, “The Imperial Coroner”. This is their third collaboration and they have great chemistry. I also liked the cute romance between pretty Cao Mu and the younger guy. The romance between the doctor and the ballerina was meh.

Here’s a link to an article on why you may like this drama

  16. Yes, it is a fictional setting. Some people guessed from the politics depicted that it is set in the Northern and Southern Dynasties period around 420AD. The clothing also seem to match that period but it is hard to use that to accurately guess the period. Nowadays, dramas tend to take creative liberties when it comes to designing the clothes on set. If you recall some time ago, people complained about the clothing design in LLTG being un-Chinese, etc.

Much like the fashion trend cycles of today, ancient Chinese fashion also went through cycles - from long blouses to short cropped ones, from wide flared sleeves to narrow sleeves, from skirts tied at the waist to later being tied above the breasts then back down again … a very interesting study in itself.

I had a good laugh in episode 19 - GJS’s first day at work patrolling the streets with his co-worker

  17. @hush puppy :waves:
I’m watching this drama, but because I read the novel, I’m not surprised at what is happening. Although I don’t remember the details because I read it a few months ago, I roughly know how it will end and what will happen to the main characters.

Ye Shi An is a well-educated and righteous man, so he will not turn bad. He truly cares about Liu Yu Ru, as can be seen from his conversation with Gu Si at the school. The big bad guy is Luo Zi Shang but he is, as you and some others have pointed out, sadly mistaken about who caused the misfortunes in his childhood. Mistakes were made by the parent generation who were themselves young and immature at that time, much like Gu Si and his friends are now. Nevertheless, it is the choices that define us, not the circumstances thrust upon us ( don’t know which great man said that but you get the drift …  ) Anyway, the drama will be much more than a romance story.

BJT, Song Yi and LXY are acting their roles well. Some people say that SY is not pretty enough but I think she depicts LYR well and I love how she looks in her outfits, especially the baby pink and powder blue ones.

    let’s enjoy this drama together!

  18. Enjoyed watching this from the start. Zhou Ye and Hou Ming Hao are so cute and have good chemistry portraying YH and TY. Pleasantly surprised to see the actress for Su Ying, Yang Rong, again after so long - don’t even remember what her last drama was but she was quite a popular actress many years ago. The supporting characters all suited their roles - Bai Xiao Sheng, Xuan Ge, Xiao Yan, Chang Lan, etc. Even the kids of Dragon Valley and CGI monsters were all so cute. Only towards the last few episodes, my attention wavered - couldn’t understand the logic of the spells and explanation of how to defeat the ‘hei qi’ and how YH returned 15 years later. Regardless of the ending episodes, still an overall enjoyable drama.
