  1. @Ahpheng! And isn't he adorbs? I've loved him since Love Story in Harvard - that was too long ago. Hahaha. He's a real sweetheart, and I can't resist. I didn't watch his last two dramas Punch and A Thousand Days Promise because I can't bear to see a perpetually sad KRW haha. Glad Doctors has him smiling A LOT. A silly smile is always stuck on my face watching him... apart from the sad times like his father's illness and death (I was totally heartbroken seeing him heartbroken).

Now hopefully HHH and HJ will mature in their relationship and start learning to give a little more of themselves to each other? I'm still amazed that two such intelligent BRAIN surgeons are such rookies when it comes to relationships. Someone like YD (aww my puppy MooHyul) can even teach them a thing or two. God forbid if SW does too!

Have u all noticed the tone of voice he takes the next day when he saw her. It was soooo soft...haha he had to catch himself before KS! I was laughing to myself!! As HJ came nearer he adjusted to his professional tone..LOLX!

Me, me, me! I noticed it too. Glad you brought it up because I was grinning like crazy when he did that. It was so obvious... and really brilliant acting from KRW! :)

  3. Hi @Ahpheng my kawan... it's been awhile. Love seeing your comic strips again.

Sigh. How can I forget why I love Kim Rae Won? He's awesome and sweet and that smile... and those veiny hands... swoon swoon.  And yes, what a kisser.

Some things about this drama drive me nuts, but not KRW and certainly not his chemistry with PSH, which surprisingly (i'm still surprised) is out of this world. And getting to see my MooHyul aka YD being exactly the loveable puppy he is. @snowglobe147 thank you for translating that scene! YD is a sweetie.

  4. Thank you @oohhkkay for the video and translation, and @homura for the translation! I love both translations, thank you so much! I had your weibo video and the translations on my screen simultaneously - what a treat to watch YAI talk. He's so animated and emotive, that even without understanding his words I can be fascinated. So when I can understand, the effect is multiple times more awesome! He seems like an amazing person off camera - it must be so interesting to just sit and chat with him, because he seems like someone who has lots to say about plenty of things.

I love that he can be so honest about himself on stage like that, in those few minutes. You can tell right off the bat that he's proud of his talents and makes no apologies for that, but at the same time keeps himself grounded - and reminds us too that A-list actors do have their own worries about their craft and their works, and just like the rest of us, there are moments that makes him want to quit his job entirely. But then he does obviously love what he does, and that's a thankful thing for all of us that we can watch him in more great works for years to come.

MS is going to take him from us briefly, and thank God he did SFD - so there's something to tide us over until he comes back with more great works.

By the way, that shot of him talking while the huge background screen gave off different scenes and expressions of YBW was awesome and gave me such great feels! I almost feel like subbing that acceptance speech video to get the full 3-D effect of how wonderful it was.

And icing on the cake was the backstage shot of him with Song-Song and Park Bo Gum. That arm casually slung around SJK immediately gave me Yeorim-Geulro feels and made me so much happier than even YAI's cameo in DotS (which didn't feature SJK much to my great great great disappointment). Doesn't this picture make you want to cry tears of joy - if you're a SKKS fan?:

  5. Just want to say thank you in advance to all the live recappers - won't be able to stream live tonight, but will surely keep refreshing Soompi on my ipad. I want to believe that YSJ will survive, although I'm a little bothered by the stills of KMY resuscitating him, and he's not even on an Oxygen mask! Hmmm.

Anyway looking forward to Ep 14, and uri @Ahpheng, babe loving your comic strips as usual.

You like Faith too! I was crazy about Faith then when it was aired, and I thought about going to Choi Young's tomb (but I didn't haha). I went to quite a few of the drama filming places of Faith though. And in one of them, I happened to meet LMH when he was there being interviewed by a Japanese program. hahahahahahaha, that was one of the most memorable things that I have encountered in Korea.

You were? Were you on the Faith thread - it went on forever even after the drama was over. I think there were more than 4000 pages in the end, everyone was so crazy. Anyway thanks to Faith I became such an avid fan of Korean history, and now with TWDR and SFD, the deal was sealed. And I can only say over and over how grateful I am for posters like you who are so kind to translate various information, and of course @homura who made our viewing pleasure that much more pleasurable. Can't begin to say how special SFD is because of all of you.

Envious that you actually met LMH - he will forever be Daejang for me. I thought YAI will forever be Gulro for me, and now it turns out he is also forever Yi Bang Won! And it truly helps that there are no likenesses of YBW that still exist.. well it's sad, honestly, but it fans my fantasies. Heheh.

It really heartwarming and how Korean love their historical dramas/movies. Even the historical places that they used are the original or they only need to maintain of it. And also to see non-Korean get interested in Korea history. If only my country drama industry interested to do this kind of drama just for the sake of knowledge and history.

@adikkeluangman I absolutely agree with you. I think we're from the same country, and I also wish the same. Good quality historical dramas that can enlighten the people on our own history - I wish someone would do that, instead of the spate of ridiculous rom-coms with silly names that have invaded the TV channels off late. I became so interested in Korean history, and can rattle off such foreign names with ease especially thanks to great historical dramas such as SFD and TWDR. It's a shame we don't have such dramas in our country - I know my kids would be more interested in history if we had them.

@homura I would like to echo everyone else here to thank you for all your wonderful write-ups. Reading your Background on 47-48, and 49-50 made me so sad because it is already the end. I still can't say goodbye to our Dragons! Sob!

Like @liddi, I was particularly moved by your summing up of Yi Do as the incarnation of the six dragons’ dreams. Well said, and so well described. One of my favorite lines from Ep 50, has to be when BW introduced the young prince to his future bodyguard MH, and described him as 'peculiar, and not like him but like all the people he missed.' It goes to show, that despite having no choice but to kill JDJ, Sambong remained as his 'man among men', and is proved by him going on to continue Sambong's plans in building Joseon. It really does sadden me though, that to this day, JDJ's final resting place has never been definitely determined. He was indeed a true genius, a man way before his time, and deserves all the accolades he is finally being given today.

I also agree with you @PrincessMe2515 - well written and well described post on YBW! He was probably the best ruler for Joseon in those turbulent times. Someone with a softer heart and a weaker resolution may not have survived all the political shenanigans of the time. He had to rule with an iron fist to ensure the perpetuation of the Yi Family in ruling Joseon, and perhaps because of that he was able to ensure that the common people could continue their livelihood in peace and prosperity, and also enabled such a great successor in Yi Do to grow up so intelligent and progressive. Ironically, I am now at Tree Episode 4, and during the deathbed scene of King Taejong, after Yi Do tells off the King for taunting him with 'The King of Joseon has no time for idling', the ailing former King tells his son firmly to accomplish his plans. Because if he does, then putting Yi Do on the throne will be Taejong's greatest accomplishment. Which it was. Yi Do answers that it will become a fact, and Taejong dies with a satisfied smile on his face.

Thank you @liddi and @oohhkkay for translating the various interviews... I look forward to your translated post too, if that's possible @oohhkkay, because I am certain it will be a great read. And I'm envious... you're going to Korea soon. I've been before, but would love to again - and would definitely want to visit YBW's tomb, as well as General Choi Young, whom I loved from Faith. I'm sure you will have a great time!

I'm not leaving the thread just yet, still too hard to say goodbye.. but just in case, HUGS TO YOU ALL!!

  8. @Ahpheng my friend... as always I'm enjoying your wonderful C-strips.

Sorry I haven't been around... but now Six Flying Dragons is over (sob!), I'll probably be camping over here. :D

Anyway I don't know if anyone has asked this question, but I'm really just curious so hopefully someone here can enlighten me: Is it impossible for a noncommissioned officer to ever be a commissioned officer? Can't they take a sabbatical and go to the military academy and earn it that way, for example? Sorry if this question is ignorant, well because I AM ignorant about military procedures. Didn't even know the difference between the two types of officers before this drama.

Also @larienssi, I think Ye Hwa said that because she's North Korean.

  9. I've finally watched Ep 50... it was the ending that I hoped for, done tastefully and beautifully (even though my inner fan girl would still be screaming for an ending with BY happily married to BW somehow, having a trail of kids and living happily ever after, but only fairy tales end that way). But before I go on, I just wanted to post here my thoughts on the last 3 episodes which I posted elsewhere for the sake of closure. For me that is. :)

    Episode 47-48

    Spoiler

Ok I have watched 47 and 48, and OMG! This drama! It doesn't give you a chance does it? No breathing space at all between all the varying contrasting emotions, like a never ending roller coaster.

YH met her end, and I was happy she's gone. I ached for BJ, but I was actually angry at YH as to the manner of her death. She killed herself to make BJ leave and save JDJ. Even at that juncture her thoughts were only for Sambong and her great cause. Did she not stop to think what it would do to BJ's already fragile emotions and sense of self, for him to see her die that way? I guess she did as an after thought by telling him with her dying breath that it isn't his fault. But did she think it would be enough just to tell him so? I just though she was selfish and senseless and totally insensitive to the end.

In contrast Sambong died with as much dignity as he lived, and I thought it was done so tastefully. I loved too that BW called him Teacher to the end... And I'm sure driving that sword into Sambong's body must have been painful for him too. It was scary to see that almost manic gleam in BW's eye throughout the Strife 1 happenings. Also I wish they changed the actor playing BS to a teenaged actor. In history BS was already 17 and married when he died - and it wouldn't have looked as cruel as it did, with little boy BS begging for his life and BW just literally swinging the sword to cut him down. But I guess it works for dramatic effect.

Still for me the most moving scene is the BW-YG scene where we finally see BW letting down his guard and unable to control the tremble in his hands. So moving how he sought solace in the memory of his hyung YG and how he confided his fear of MH leaving him. That was an immensely powerful scene.

I was also moved by the confrontation between MH and BJ.... Wow. That was some emotionally charged fight. I'm still amazed by all the incredible acting. And that scene between Father and Son... What do you all think? Was BW faking it or did he really mean it that he was willing to accept death at his father's hand? I was moved when he said that death would end his suffering... And really one understands that. He's done all these terrible things because of the sheer ambition and need for power that drove him to it. And yet he has suffered greatly, tamping down whatever morality there was in him that may have stopped him, snuffing down whatever affection he must have had for Sambong and Bang Seok - because we all know he truly respected and hero worshipped his Teacher, and I believe that he did truly have affection for his little brother as well.

    Episode 49

    Spoiler

And Ep 49!! OMG be still my beating heart! My heart broke during that scene between BY and BW! He asked her to marry him, and she says she will.. and that hurt him so much. Because he knew the old BY who loved him, would never marry him... but this BY standing in front of him, desperate to save the people she cherished, was prepared to do anything to save them. A more selfish, greedy man who only had thoughts of his own needs and feelings, would have grabbed the chance the moment she agreed. After all she finally agreed after all these years... but not BW. Because for all the things that he has become, and perhaps the worm has swallowed him and turned him into a monster of sorts... but this scene was so powerful in revealing to us BW's true nature. The BW who loved genuinely and unselfishly, always putting BY's needs and happiness before his own. He could have kept her beside him, but he did not. Because his love for her was that deep, he let her go.

The two people he cherished were leaving him, and he let them go, because their happiness was too important to him. He only determined to steel himself further in order to bear the loneliness and pain that the path he chose has destined him. And yet they came back to save his life. That ending. BY running desperately to save him, and MH... who despite wanting to leave everything behind, still somehow could not shake off the bond that has been formed between himself and BW. I was moved, deeply moved that despite their differences, when push comes to shove, BW's life is still too precious for them to turn their backs on him

And Episode 50... @oohhkkay, I loved what you wrote about the final episode. Especially about BW seeing the people he missed in his son Yi Do. So meaningful and so apt in a way. I loved how he introduced Yi Do to Mu Hyul.

And you're right about the difference in the look in his eye - when the Queen came to confront him angrily he treated her with such disdain, it was almost sad to see it. At least previously even if they had no love lost between them from the beginning, at least he always greeted her warmly and respectfully. His eyes were always warm toward her, but not in that scene. I also struggled to comprehend his feelings for his son Yi Do in the next scene. In the end I felt that he was also trying to comprehend his son, to make a decision to change the Crown Prince because he was already aware of Yi Do's outstanding intelligence and abilities. I guess the decision was inevitable after seeing the ghosts of those he held near and dear to his heart in his own son - hearing Yi Do utter almost exactly the words of JDJ so many years ago must have been both a shock and a relief to him. It was also heartwarming in the end to see him pat Yi Do's shoulder so affectionately, when we know how he treats his son years later in Tree. Perhaps BW felt he needed to come off cold, to teach his son to strengthen his own heart to face the loneliness of the Throne. It is an evident sign of BW's affection for his son, that he asks Mu Hyul to be his son's protector. Because of course he would know, that Mu Hyul would not only be a bodyguard but also a friend, a father figure and the voice of conscience for Yi Do. It truly truly sheds new light on the fractured father-son relationship we witnessed in Tree.

And then the look in his eyes when he met again first Mu Hyul and then Boon Yi. I could actually feel his loneliness through his entire demeanour, and the warmth he felt for MH and the love for BY was evident just from how he looked at them. Truly this was a master class performance from YAI. I don't know how else to praise him but to say that they should just give him whatever awards left that he hasn't won, because he just truly deserves all the accolades for this career defining role.

Anyway coming back to the drama - I loved that they brought back the side characters from Tree and we get to see BY grow into a distinguished, beautiful old lady - who still only wore that one ornament in her hair. As she told BW that last time they met. They didn't need many words, these two. They understood each other so well always.

I just want to share this comment from Milenda on Dramabeans. If you're here and reading this, I hope you don't mind. Because I think it's perfect, and beautifully written.

The show to me is about metaphors. Though I read many posts that criticized the fictional love story between Bangwon and the fictional Boonyi (many in favor of real life Lady Min)… Boon Yi has always represented the common people. If you read on Taejong’s history profile and on wiki, he was a ruthless ruler who killed many nobles and family to subsist the throne but he was also effective in improving the lives of the common folk. Hence this metaphor was written so well and weaved as a love story instead. Lee Bang Won’s eternal and greatest love is his people

Lee Bang Won’s eternal and greatest love is Boon Yi, and therefore invariably that would mean his people. Perfect!

  10. @nevill, since I'm so hopeless without subs, that's just my assumption. Because it didn't seem like there was any husband around when they showed her after the two year time jump. Not sure about the daughter - there was the little girl who called her grandma at the end, but it's not certain they're blood related. Anyway as I said, I could be wrong about that, but it warms my romantic heart were it to be true. :P

  11. I'm crying. It's over and my heart is bleeding. Such a wonderful drama from start to finish. There were slower episodes and exhilarating ones, but never a bad one. So so so good.

    Spoiler

Even though I don't understand much of what was said in Ep 50, as there was a LOT of talking, it seemed like a good ending. A little rushed because Strife 2 was only indicated by the scene where Bang Gan has been arrested and is in that horrible prison place where even BW had been tortured before. Other events are just mentioned ie deaths of the Min brothers (thank you @Ayame for recapping and explaining this), but I appreciated so much that the ending was for closure between BW and BY. I can't write much until I watch with subs tomorrow, but for me the ending was poignant. Now a powerful and able King, BW seeks out MH and I'm assuming asks him to become Yi Do's bodyguard. And then goes to look for BY on her little idyllic island.

At first it seemed that BY refused to meet BW and only watched him from afar, but then at the very end we go back to that scene and it turns out as BY was walking away BW came to her. I usually dislike flashback scenes as they are usually fillers to make up for lack of time to film more scenes, but I thought the flashbacks in this episode was utilised effectively. I was particularly moved when BY recalled her scenes through the years with BW - the scene where he declared he would love her till the day he dies, and the time they played in the snow and the scene where he tells her all he wants is for her to be smiling somewhere. Ahhh... my heart is breaking for them and yet to me it was the right ending. I don't know if this is right, but I felt that she wore her hair up like a married woman, and kept wearing the hair pin he gave her because to her, she was married to him - even if they were never together. And he seemed extremely pleased to see her continue to wear it too.

Anyway... as always waiting for uri @homura's wonderful insights... and will probably write some more tomorrow after I watch with subs! I don't want to say goodbye just yet!! Will probably start rewatching TWDR tomorrow just to prolong it. Anyone game? :)

  12. Wowowow... that was some episode. Plenty of quiet moments, but the end got me really pumped up.

So many scenes I love. Right at the very beginning when MH reunites with BW, and MH kneels in front of his prince. BW kneels down, tells him to get up and hugs him.. now tell me, how can MH not be loyal to someone like that?

Then the scene between BW and BY, when he gave her the hairpin. OMG I was literally crying for these two. They love each other so much, and now they may well be on two different sides, and yet... he never forgot her through his ordeal in Ming, and obviously she's been thinking of him too and praying for his safe return. I'm such an utterly hopeless romantic, and just couldn't bear it especially when he held her head and helped her put the hairpin in her hair. And it didn't seem like he brought anything for his wife (or maybe he did and they just didn't show it, but I guess he should even out of obligation).

I was beside myself with anger when YG, then MH, HR and Master Hong got tortured. I don't have any idea what Sambong is up to, and really now will be counting the hours until the subs are out. And today, the Queen is already sickly so it really does look like the First Strife of Princes will be happening tomorrow. Never thought I'd be looking forward to watching that violent piece of history... but now I just want BangWon to get his comeuppance. He so deserved to be Seja, and I wish Sambong would just stop being such a stubborn a** about it... but well, history tells us he doesn't so what will be, will be.

I also loved the scene on the roof with MH and BJ - two warriors, and two people who naturally became friends who respect and care about each other. Its a quiet moment to savour because tomorrow, they will be on opposite sides and will perhaps, even, have to fight each other. It will tear me apart to watch that, and no matter how much I love BangJi, I'm team BangWon all the way, so inevitably that also makes me team MuHyul. What will become of BoonYi? I think we will have some idea tomorrow.

  13. @homura and @oohhkkay, thank you so much for your detailed explanation. I love that I got two explanations - from the Korean and Chinese point of view. Very very enlightening and informative, and deeply appreciated. Such subtle changes in history which meant so much.

One more question though: Yi Bang Won made it impossible to turn the country back to the status of Empire. Is this because he wanted to maintain good relations with China? He never entertained JDJ's ambition of taking back Liaodong?

Anyway, it was a shame that two such great minds as YBW and JDJ didn't team up. I cannot imagine how much more remarkable Joseon would have been if that were so. YBW was not only intelligent, he was also incredibly brave, cunning and ambitious - such fantastic characteristics that would have been a great asset to JDJ. If only JDJ didn't fear him so much.

  14. Hi everybody! I see some familiar names here, so just dropping in to say HI! I've watched Ep 1 and 2 of this drama so far, and well, although it's not yet love for me, but the story holds my attention enough that I'm definitely watching Ep 3. I'm hoping the story will get better and better. For now SJK is nothing short of amazing, and I'm so glad he's back, and I'm also glad that SHK isn't doing too badly either. If she keeps this up, I will definitely grow to like her Kang Mo Yeon more and more.

Also I'm really taken with Jin Goo. This is an actor I'm not familiar with at all, but I'm already so impressed. He has incredible screen presence, and his expressions are wonderful. You can practically see all the conflicting emotions going on in his head in that confrontation scene with Kim Ji Won. He also has great chemistry with SJK, and since I'm such a sucker for bromance, I am anticipating more great scenes between the two. Already their code names 'Big Boss' and 'Wolf' are giving me Top Gun feels. And I'm glad he's not 'Goose' because we all know what happened to him.

And talking about bromance, another reason for me to keep going with DOTS is because Yoo Ah In will be cameoing! I know it's been said that he's doing it for SHK, because they are such good buddies. But I'm more excited because... Yeorim and Geulro! Together again! OMG I really hope YAI's cameo has something to do with SJK - long lost best friend reunited or something like that. I'm so anticipating that!

  15. @chocolatewaffle, you said everything I wanted to say. @homura, I was eagerly anticipating your historical background information for Ep 41-42 and I wasn't disappointed. Just like @chocolatewaffle said, I am so impressed with Yi Bang Won. Even the Annals of Joseon couldn't lie and recorded what had happened - that only Prince Jeongan was capable of going to Ming as envoy with any chance of success at all. And the fact that he won the trust and respect of both the Prince of Yan (who will become the Yongle Emperor) and the current Hongwu Emperor is definitely no ordinary achievement. I love the way the writers of SFD imagined the encounter with Zhu Di, which showed Bang Won not only had amazing bravery, but also a sharp intellect and incredible awareness. And compassion for his people, especially Moo Hyul. It is no wonder that this meeting fostered a friendship between the two countries that lasted 270 years! Wow.

More so than this, I was moved by the fact that it was King Taejong who stopped the witch hunt against the Wang clan. This fact adds on to the increasing amount of facts that we now know about King Taejong, that suggest we have completely misunderstood him. This cannot be the act of a ruthless tyrant, I agree. This act of compassion toward a particular group of people who he must also consider his subjects, shows King Taejong's compassion, love and justice toward his people. He was actually ruthless when he needed to be, with those he felt would threaten the throne and therefore the stability of the nation. Perhaps he was right to put to death even his wife's brothers. We cannot imagine what the situation was like at the time, but probably as the country was still so young, many nobles felt that there was a chance for any of them to steal the throne from the Yi family, more so if they had close relations to the King. Anyway these are just my suppositions, and imagination. I may be totally wrong. But for now I'm incredibly impressed by YBW.

And on the story's side, we can also see that (as @liddi mentioned before) despite that scary impression we initially had of King Taejong in TWDR, SFD just confirmed for us how much King Taejong loved his son Sejong. By giving him his most trusted and loyal warrior, Moo Hyul who he knew would protect Sejong at all costs. Sad that Sejong perhaps didn't realise this, being so afraid of his father.

So I'm pretty darned disappointed that we will never know how the real YBW looked like. Devastated really. 'Delicate frame and pale complexion' actually sounds like the description of a flower boy! LOL So YBW will probably forever look like YAI in my mind now. Complete with mustache and beard - and can I say that YAI looks amazingly handsome that way!

OK I have one more random question. This is about the difference between the term 'jeonha' and 'pyeha'. I noticed that Prince of Yan was called 'jeonha' while the Hongwu Emperor was 'pyeha.' I kind of realised that in general, all kings of Joseon and Goryeo were also called 'jeonha'. Except in Legend, where Damdoek aka Gwanggaeto was called 'pyeha'. And of course Ji Chang Wook was also 'pyeha' in Empress Ki. What is the difference between the two terms? Is it king vs emperor or something like that? Anyway just curious, and am really grateful for all your generous explanations.

Oh and @homura thank you so much for answering my previous question!

  16. @homura, I have a question. Have been wondering for awhile about this. If King Taejong is actualy his posthumous name, given after his death, what name was he known as when he was King? This is actually a general question - curious what all the various Kings were called during their lifetime, by the people of that generation.

Anyway still breathless from this week's episodes, and looking forward to your historical background post. And MH and BW looks so manly with their facial hair! :)
