  1. @Reiz I know that very well, b/c she said that she took C4K for her resume in 2016.

If this drama flops, it only hurts her reputation, not helping her reputation. That's what happened to her after C4K and BM. Both of them are flop dramas, and it didn't help her to move to better drama.

As long as this drama doesn't flop in rating, I'm good. Even if the script turns s-h-i-t, I will be only watching her cuts and pretends this drama never happens. Delete it from memory.

But if this drama flops in rating, then all hell breaks loose.

Luckily, Sodam still have her action movie Special Cargo coming out this year.

  2. @Dreams I understand your point completely, because I watch movies for escapism so that I don't have to pay too much attention about politics. But writing romance doesn't mean you need to sacrifice a woman's individuality and life to serve the purpose of a man.

There are few Kdrama that are centered about women like WWW: Search. Romance only plays as subplot, but not the main plot. These are good.

I hope Ha Myung Hee can respect the female characters she write. But now that I've seen character bio of PSD, I am very doubtful.

Romance is not bad but hopefully it won't be a cliche one.

Romance is not bad, but it should never be the focal point of FEMALE CHARACTER. Period.

It's very infuriating and completely SEXIST when scriptwriter writes female character as plot device only to serve male character's purpose. Women are only serve as love interest in romance, nothing more nothing less. Whereas male characters are center of the story, and everything revolves around them.

What this shows is that you are dehumanizing women as an object because you are treating women like a tool, not a human.

Obviously, there are some societies in which misogyny is prevalent, and society teaches people from birth that women and men are not equal. But this is 21st century, and we shouldn't be tolerating sexist and misogynistic POV from scriptwriters that enforce this antiquated viewpoint.

  4. @rahma92 I think romance is overdone and cliche in Kdrama. Unless Kdrama decides go on fullblown Blue Valentine route of depicting how a pair of lover fall in love and then fall out of love by ending the marriage with a divorce paper, I think the trope Kdrama uses is cliche, often tedious. Especially in the writing of Ha Myung Hee.

So yes, I prefer Kdrama with zero romance because real life is never about romance. It's about getting a job, getting yourself the money to buy a house and to eat, live your life with full happiness. Romance shouldn't ever be the focal point of the drama. It can be a part of it, but it is not the most important thing ever.

The biggest criticism that I always have for romance Kdrama is that it depicts that romance and marriage are what defines a woman, but that's not true. Women can have motivation outside of romance, women can have dreams, women can and will work toward what they truly wants in life, women want success in life as well. When scriptwriter limits the women into 2D figures by trapping them in romance genre only to serve male character's purpose, then you takes away the woman's rights and freedom to do what they want to do.

That's my biggest problem with romance Kdrama.

  5. @Dreams I know Misaeng has high rating at tvN and it has no romance. So does Signal (tvN), Secret Forest (tvN). But this is Ha Myung Hee we are talking about. I'm 99% sure that there will be romance involved and it will be like PBG x PSD x BWS. Hell, she already set it up with PSD's character being PBG's fan. And the fact that BWS's character is also ambitious and the type who knows what he wants, he probably chases after PSD's character who, in the bio, says no on marriage.

Although I want to see friendship instead of romance, I know Ha Myung Hee's writing style. She is cliche romance scriptwriter.

Until miracle happens upon Ha Myung Hee, I doubt that she will write Sodammie's character with strong motivation or independence.

  6. Crossing my finger that this is friendship oriented drama with zero romance. Sodam is good with chemistry acting, b/c she is just brilliant in acting. But for once, I really want to see friendship instead of usual Kdrama romance.

Also, I have to say this, it seems that BWS's character is most interesting one. Man, I do not anticipate how Ha Myung Hee is going to write Sodammie's character in the drama. Right from the bio, the only interesting point is that she is a fangirl who quits big company job to pursue her dream.

I hope she will write Sodammie's character more 3D than 2D.

  7. @gumtaek Here I thought that Park Bo Gum stans always update the info first in the thread, turns out I can get it fast too.:joy:

Park So Dam - Ahn Jung Ha Age 26

General summary: Wanting to be makeup artist. Diligent. Works her life from SKY university (Seoul National, Korea University or Yonsei) to big companies. Quits big company job after 3 years to become makeup artist. She brought a house with a loan. Fan of Sae Hye Joon since college after discovering him in magazine article (Park Bo gum's character).

In general, the summary for Sodam is very limited insight. Not much to say other than the new info about her being a fan of Sae during college. Idk, it turns out she is Sae Hye Joon's fangirl.

Also, in consider of Byun Woo Seok's fans in this thread, I also translate his character bio.

Byun Woo Seok - Won Hae Hyo Age 26

General summary: Outgoing, playful, gentle. He has clear definition of likes and dislikes. He won't do anything he doesn't love. He likes a challenge and he fights to win. As an actor, he is often cast in multiple drama but never seem to get the success of the fame. He's rich, but he doesn't think much of his privilege.

So BWS's character is pretty much the foil of PBG. PSD's character is mediator between these two. She works hard to achieve what she wants, but she also never seems to be happy with her life in white collared job.

  8. @aintnodrama It takes 6 months to finish filming Kdrama? Wow, that's a big difference compared to Korean movies. Pre-production is for Korean director, production designer, art designer etc to build up the setting and round up the cast/polishing the script. For actors/actresses, filming only takes 3 - 4 months max in production. Unless there is some reshooting involved, then the filming will extend a month or two. Actors/actresses are not involved majority of time in pre-production nor post-production at all.

That's really long production time than I thought it would be for Korean drama.

  9. @gumtaek Yeah, I thought it's rather strange too. There is no confirmation about supporting actresses, just rumors.

I think this drama is really rushing for production. Idk is it b/c they are trying to make the broadcast date or what. I rarely pay attention to Kdrama production bts, but is it standard for kdrama to film early and then broadcast months later?

I thought only pre-produced drama does that in Korea.

  10. According to some tweets from Twitter, Youth Record completes the casting.

Which I thought it's rather strange, they cast the mothers of two male character, but not the mother of the female character. Since there is no news about supporting female actress being cast, I assume Ha Myung Hee goes back to good ol' days of triangle love of 2 men fighting over 1 woman instead of nowadays rectangle love. I mean, usually in her dramas, she have 1 female antagonist who had to hate female protagonist only because of jealousy and petty reasons.

I will be very surprised if Ha Myung Hee doesn't pull out her usual triangle love trope in this drama.

Also, if they are going to film the drama by March, is this gonna be pre-produced drama? The drama isn't going to air until July.

  11. @beyaruth Exactly! It's true. Like, script is very important for Kdrama. It will either break you, or make you.

Back when The Priests was a hit in Korea, Sodam was the critical darling of Chungmuro. But then after she took the flop drama like Beautiful Mind and C4K, her reputation took a hit. Thankfully, she focus on her indie movies and got back to her movies instead of dramas. Which was why she was a hit in Parasite.

But Kdramas are not like Kmovies, in which directors write their own movie. Not every scriptwriter can be like Bong Joon Ho, making it worldwide hit.

So yeah, I completely agree with you that scripts' quality really make you or break you.

  12. @beyaruth Yeah, same here. I've been to MyDramaList and let me tell ya, the negative reviews on either of Ha Myung Hee's drama are definitely warranted:skull:

I'm just crossing my fingers that scriptwriter doesn't destroy the characters she write half way through. The director relies on the script, so no complaints against Ahn Gil Ho. He isn't bad director.

I'm praying for my bb Sodam that she makes the right choice after big Oscars win. And this drama is going to air in July, so it's in the middle of Tokyo summer Olympics. Airing right at the beginning of summer Olympics may impact the drama's rating.

But then again, there is coronavirus. Coronavirus is highly contagious and currently there is no vaccine. We don't know how this outbreak will impact Olympics or filming of the drama.

  13. I didn't bet on Parasite winning Best Picture. I mean, it's b/c Oscars is very racist in general. So....

I'm just rooting for my bb girl Sodam to wear haute couture. I hope she wears jewelries too, 'cause going to Oscars red carpet and not wearing any type of jewelries is kinda strange.

After Oscars, I think Sodam is prepared for her promotion on Fukuoka. I'm more excited for her action film Special Cargo though. It'll be so awesome to see her in action scenes.

I read that Special Cargo is a mix of Ahjussi crossover with Baby Driver. If it's anything like what I heard, then Sodam is going to be absolutely stunning in girl crush role. Ugh, I can't wait for her movie to come out.

  14. Or you know, Hollywood. I do see some people toss her name for Marvel movies like Clea for Doctor Strange 2, even though I don't want her to be involved due to the fact that Marvel is very limited. On one hand, Marvel movies = money. But is it worth it?

And then there is DC movies. Some people reckon she will be perfect for Poison Ivy. I dunno. I do want Sodam bb to be in Hollywood films in the future, but not like commercial superhero films from DC or Marvel.

  15. Whether Parasite wins BP or not, I hope Sodam bb chooses her project carefully. Yes, she chose to accept Youth Record. But her drama choices are not the same as her movie choices.

If the scriptwriter is terrible, it will hurt your reputation if you are involved in said drama. I just hope Youth Record is a success because I don't want another BM or C4K happening again. Sodam bb deserves so much more than crappy drama.

And honestly, it will look bad if she ends up involved with terrible roles right after reputable Parasite fame. Sodam bb makes her name since The Priest, and I want her to continue the success, be it Chungmuro.

  16. Am I surprised that old white voters want to vote for American director and says racist and xenophobic s-h-i-t like "foreign films shouldn't be nominated along with "regular films?"

No, but I know for sure as hell that Oscars still have tons of racist voters, so I don't bet on Parasite winning Best Picture.

But to imagine Parasite, a Korean film winning Best Picture at local Oscars. That makes a dream come true. I hope Parasite wins, but I don't doubt there are racist white old voters who vote against it.

But at least my Sodam bb is going to Oscars, but my Buddha, I don't want her to come away empty handed. I want her to win.

  17. Also Sodam bb is definitely going to Oscars. It's now confirmed.

No one will update this thread, so all news will be at https://sodamninlove.wordpress.com/ The OP will not update this thread either. So heh.

Oh yeah, Sodam bb is also going to promote her indie film called Fukuoka in March since it will be released in March. That means she probably rotates between filming Youth Records and promoting her film. I'm still waiting for her action film, Special Cargo, to come out. Probably after Call and then NEW will release the film.

I cannot wait for her action movie. Sodam is really good with action/horror genre films, not just because she is a brilliant actress, but also because she is great in bringing out the tenacity and strength. She did mention she wants to play antiheroine in Vanity Fair. So this type of genre fits her so well.

  18. Oscars accidentally tweeted out the prediction with Parasite winning Best Picture. Like, ISTG, if Oscars doesn't give Parasite Best Picture, they will look like damn a-s-s idiots.

Who would f-u-c-k-ing tweet out your personal prediction of who gets what?

  19. Parasite needs to win Best Original Screenplay at BAFTA to continue the race for Best Picture.

Also, f*** BAFTA for their blatant racism against POC in general. I have nothing against 1917, but really, that movie is sooooo Oscars baiting and you just know Spielberg would be supporting this type of crap.
