  1. Episode 57 and 58 were super frustrating. I assumed it would pick up the pace since there are only a handful of episodes left, but nopeee. First, they recycled like half of the war scenes from the previous episodes- CQ playing flute on top of the wall wearing the blue outfit, citizens escaping the city, the city on fire, etc. If you're going to take the time and energy to make a war scene, at least make it well. Don't reuse footages. I don't know who did the editing, whether it's Hunan or someone else, but recycling of scenes happened multiple times and it's soooo frustrating. Also, nothing happened in Ep 58 and there were two commercials in the middle. We waited for three days and this is what we get??? Like wtfffff. Ughhhh this is giving me high blood pressure.

What continues to frustrate me is the portrayal of YX and CQ. This is the problem when a drama only films half of the novel. The characters are not well developed and they don't have enough time for personal growth. The multiple layers of the characters are just not shown. YX was cruel but by the end of the novel you just pity him. CQ was frustrating at times in the novel but ultimately, she was still a heroine who fought for her beliefs and protected her friends till the end. She fought to end slavery and saved Xiao Ce's nation. We don't get that CQ in the drama. She's portrayed as someone who's naive, stubborn and seems not to understand the sacrifices of war. I really wanted this drama to be about the journey of a heroine but unfortunately, this is not the case.

Also, I'm quite sad that we won't see anymore of Xiao Ce. Really wish he had more scenes.

Anyways, going to watch more of LGX taking care of babies. In one episode, it was his birthday and one of the stars in the house arranged professional bakers to teach LGX how to make a birthday cake. It was hilarious! LGX couldn't believe that he had to make his own bday cake. The baker make him whisk egg whites into stiff peak and he was having a breakdown, lol.

  2. Why is the pace in ep 56 slow again? can this drama really afford anymore dragging?? Honestly, the script writers/director should've either made the whole novel or shorten the drama if they were going to only make half the novel. Now we are stuck with a drama that's not terrible but not the best. This could've been the next Nirvana in Fire. I'm just frustrated because the cast is on point and the original story is fantastic but the drama is not delivering.

Funny story, in the other cdrama I'm watching, the lead couple fell in love so quickly that it's almost not believable. Here we have the opposite problem with our leads, lol.

since you read the book, do you know if the scene where he is wearing the mask and she the golden armor is before or after the ice lake? Is the ice lake scene really far away?

@mrsyooknit before. he doesn't need to cover his face after the ice lake incident since CQ leaves YX so technically she isn't a traitor (of Wei) anymore. The ice lake scene should be coming up soon, but since the drama has deviated from the novel on many levels, i'm not sure when that scene will be shown. based on Zhao Liying's interviews, i kinda of assumed that the ice lake scene will be at the end of the drama so i guess we'll find out, haha.

  4. I thought the kiss scene was done pretty well. It was slow but full of emotions. YWY was grabbing onto CQ's shoulder tightly, you could feel his emotions.

I'm rather upset that the drama skipped the entire part of CQ reorganizing the Yanbei army that was in the book. She reorganized the entire army, which made military system a lot more efficient and effective. Those parts really showcased her leadership and brilliant strategic mind and I really wish the drama had shot those scenes; it would've made her character even stronger.

  5. AHHHHHHHHH XING/YUE XING/YUE XING/YUEEEE!!! So many Xing/Yue moments in these episodes!!! I love the moment of them sitting on the rock talking. You can see CQ smiling while bickering with YWY. This is definitely a turning point of their relationship. CQ sees a different side of YWY and hopefully she realizes that they are a lot similar and begins to understand him. I also love the moment of them and Mo'er lying on the bed together. YWY was totally being a gentleman giving Mo'Er and CQ the blanket, haha.

Btw, Wei Shuye became so obnoxious so quickly. ughhh how his expression annoys me, lol.

Dyinggggg to see tomorrow's episodes!!! That kiss will be such a pleasant surprise!!!

Lost love in times..  Is it nice?

You know it...  And you still watch PA? Hahahaha

@dashmount20 It's moving pretty quickly, a lot happens in the first 2 episodes. the director is the same person who directed Ten Miles of Peach Blossom, Love 020 and Journey of Flower so I'm expecting good things! Haha im wayyyy too emotionally invested in PA, can't stop now, lol.

  7. AHHHHH this drama sure knows how to leave us hanging!!! That ending and the previews!!!! Omggggg!

Summary of today's episodes: basically everyone is trying to kill Chu Qiao.

So many new characters introduced today! Yayyy, we got to see Xiao Ce! That scholar cracks me up sooo much! His personality contracts with CQ so much, it’s hilarious. YX looks good with the navy blue outfit! They should give YWY darker outfits too; he looks way better with darker colors.

We should be getting some quality Xing/Yue moments next week, YAYY!!! I started watching Lost Love in Times with William Chan and Cecilia Liu. Two episodes in and they already hugged; by third episode, the male lead already asked the female lead to marry him. PA, what are you doing to us!!! 50 episodes for one kiss!

Hm. Giving up on PA for the time being...I was here for the love story and right now it's so...not there. Plus, this whole revenge thing is taking too much out of the series, it's hard to watch and find any interest at the moment.

Have you watched Eternal Love? It's got good reviews. Me too. I just want to take a break from this drama. It's getting depressing with all the angsty emotions. I didn't sign up for this! :bawling:

    @Nina Bina@maixa02

haha aren't historical cdramas always angsty?? watch Love 020!!! it's a modern drama and way shorter than PA and super light-hearted. Also, the actor who plays Yuan Song is in it and his character is hilarious. kdrama Chief Kim is also super hilarious!

  9.

Episode 45-46 brief recap for those interested: YX gets out of Chang An but abandons the Xiuli army. CQ goes back to save them and kills Yuwen Hui. Chun Er follows YX. Yuan Song tries to assassinate YX and gets his arm chopped off. YX is badly injured but spares YS' life and tells people to send them back to Chang An safely. These 10 men unfortunately are Yanbei soldiers who's families were murdered by the Wei people so they rape CE. On the way back to Chang An, CQ runs into them and kills all the soldiers and escorts YS and CE back to Wei. YS doesn't want to see CQ but CQ still follows them to Wei to make sure they are safe. CQ and YS have a long farewell moment where she tells him that there are no right or wrong, only survival of the fittest. YS/CE run into the 7th prince and CE blames all of their misfortune on CQ and says by capturing her they will capture YX. Also, concubine Lan finds her dead son and blames CQ for it.

So the drama killed Yuwei Hui wayyy earlier than the novel, yet somehow his death felt kinda anti-climatic. He was so evil the whole time and just died like that??? It wasn't as satisfying as I had hoped. Looks like Concubine Lan will be after CQ as well and I find this introduction of her as a possible antagonist really unnecessary. There is plenty of book material to work with and there are still so many unresolved mysteries. Can this drama really afford any screen time to this unnecessary plot? Whatever parts she ends up playing, I hope it's short.

Anyways, I'm excited for the introduction of that bookworm in tomorrow's episode. He's so frustrating that it's funny.

  10. Hey @mundane9@lindasxx, @monchoo and anyone else who has read the novel,

Judging from your responses in the thread, it seems like you guys have read the novel (hopefully I'm not completely off, haha), so I wanted to get your opinion on how the drama is going.  What do you like/dislike about the drama adaptation? I've read most of the novel (skipped some parts about the Huai Song princess) and I wish the drama had stuck to the darker Yuwen Yue like the novel. What I liked about his character is that his love for Chu Qiao made him a better person and you see his gradual transformation in the novel. In the drama version, he's too good, which makes the character boring. How about you guys?

Hi all, I am another fellow audience that had been lurking and reading posts without commenting. I really enjoy all the different opinions here and I can't help but post something. I don't think I am the only one, this drama seems to have this affect and I love it when watching a drama to have a live discussion, gives u different perspective then just watching without analyzing...

Ok, so does anyone who actually read the novel can confirm YX ordered it to happen? because i am getting another version here that CE followed him, her brother tried to attack YX and YX cut off his arms and then TOLD his man to send both her brother and her home unharmed since he is injured but because those men hate the Wei (their families got torture/r*pe/kill by Wei) they inflicted their hate on CE. I really hope the drama will follow this route instead because it make more sense. I know YX become cruel and evil but honestly I don't think he will go soooo far as to purposely hurt CE (I am talking about physically, emotionally is another matter lol) I can see him not caring about innocent lives to achieve his ultimate goal but to intentional hurt a girl who loves him is too much...If the drama does go this way, I am very disturbed and upset...hopefully, this is just the preview cut out this way to hype up conversation :)

@BreezeC Yeah, You are right about what happened with YX, CE and Yuan Song. Basically Yuan Song tried to assassinate YX and stabbed him with a poisonous knife pretty severely, then YX chopped YS' arm off as self defense. YX then ordered a small number of men to escort CE and YS back to Wei safely. Because YX was badly injured and all of his servants were preoccupied with taking care of him, the task of escorting YS/CE randomly fell to a group of Northern Yan men who hate Wei. Chu Qiao ran into them raping CE and killed them, then she escorted CE/YS back to Wei. So yeah, YX never ordered his men to hurt CE/YS; he let YS go even though he tried to kill him. The way CE's rape occurred was truly unfortunate and it led her to misdirect all of her hatred to Chu Qiao (then spent the rest of her life trying to kill CQ). I don't know how the drama will portray this part of the story, but I hope they stick to the novel.

  12. YESSS, the long waited rebellion is finaaaally here! The star of today's episodes is definitely Li Qin, who plays Chun Er. She did a fantastic job displaying a wide range of emotions.

Watching the exchange among Yuan Song, Chun Er and Yan Xun, honestly, I'm kind of annoyed with how the character of Chun Er and Yuan Song are written. They are so naive and have no sense of the manipulation, schemes and betrayal that go on in every royal family in order to stay in power. Brothers killing each other in order to win the throne happened frequently and marriages were used as a tool of political alliance among nations, yet these two characters have no sense or understanding of the political schemes that go on in the royal family. You're born to the royal family, shouldn't you know this, come onnnnnn. I pity Chun Er because she's being used by her father and Yan Xun as a pawn (and she has absolutely no idea how manipulative her father is), but the fact that she begged YX to apologize to the king, thinking that the king would spare him, is just frustrating. I mean, did she really think that YX wasn't going to do anything to avenge for his family? Even though it's a drama and characters aren't meant to be realistic, the naivety of her character is almost too much.

Also, the whole innocent/naive girl turning evil after being raped seems to be a common cdrama trope. The character Zheng Er in Prince of Lan Ling was written the same way. I guess it's the author/writers' way of tugging at our emotions but it's so uncomfortable to watch.

Now that I've read the novel, I can't help but compare it to the drama. In the novel, Yuwen Yue did shot the ice arrow at Yan Xun and Chu Qiao, preventing them from escaping Chang An and leading them to 8 years of imprisonment. Therefore, YX and CQ had a reason to hate him. He also never offered them help to escape (if I remember correctly). The drama portrays YWY as a way nicer/kinder person than in the novel; they are really trying to sell YWY, lol. Also, I wonder how much of CQ leading Xiuli army to fight against Wei armies will be shown in the drama. She was a pretty impressive military strategist in the novel and I reaaaaally hope the drama shows this aspect of her.

Also, since when did eyeliner=turning evil becoming a thing in cdrama?? I thought it was a kdrama thing, haha...

anyone can enlighten me what are the dialogue between Xiao Ce and Chu Qiao at the end of episode 42?? I could only understand the parts that sound the same as cantonese lolol, something about escorting the crown prince of liang back home, Chu Qiao give him a list of poopy people to escort him in order for him to pick the 7th prince... Xiao Ce sense that Chu Qiao wanted him to pick the 7th prince and said something like I'm doing you a favour and what she will do for him to repay him back.

I always enjoy, Xiao Ce and Chu Qiao's exchanges, they are the most interesting ones.... I can't imagine how they would end up as best friends...

@tsukimori You pretty much got the gist of it! She basically told Xiao Ce to pick the 7th Wei princess to escort him back to the Liang nation so there is one less army guarding Chang An. It's part of her escape plan. Since Xiao Ce wants Yan Xun to rebel anyways, he agreed with the arrangement and said he will head to the palace and ask the Wei emperor for the 7th prince.

  14. Sad to say, this week's episode is off to a disappointing start. Not much happened in these two episodes when we really need the drama to speed up. I was hoping their rebellion would start today but nopeee. Now that I've read most of the novel, I'm quit sad that the drama will only cover half of the novel, we are going to miss out so much. On the bright side, we got to see Xiao Ce's intelligent side early and we got a nice Xing/Yue moment, hehehe.

  15. I finally caved and started reading the novel. I definitely can't understand everything but I think I got the gist of the plot.

So far, I noticed that the drama gave Yuwen Hui and Chun Er way bigger roles than the novel. Also Yuwen Yue is definitely darker in the novel and he seriously saved Chu Qiao sooo many times. The drama definitely made a point to make Chu Qiao and Yuwen Yue a couple since the beginning. Also, her relationship with Yan Xun is portrayed a bit different in the drama.

  16. OMGG AHAHAHAHAHAHA Xiao Ce is too much!! In ep. 40, when he and CQ were out riding horses, he basically asked her if she wants to make babies with him, and that they have good genes so the kids will be good looking. OMGGG this guy, i can'ttt!!! AHAHA.

So it looks like Yan Xun will escape Chang An early next week, but the drama hasn't shown us any preparation work for the escape. He just talks about it for like 10 seconds, not showing any behind the scene works and it feels really unsatisfying. Maybe we'll see some next week??

Thursday came waayyyy too quick this week!

  17. Episode 38 had me dyinggg! I love Xiao Ce! He's hilarious!! Between his crazy antics, the Wei Princes' frustration with him, and Chu Xiao feeling uncomfortable with him coming onto her strongly, Xiao Ce provides some serious comic relief after so much angst and vengeance. Now I wish the drama had introduced him earlier, I want more scenes of him and Chu Qiao!

Toward the end of ep 38, we finally get a bit more info on Chu Qiao's backstory. Apparently the new concubine of the Wei emperor is a friend of Luo He, Chu Qiao's mom. I thought the writers have pretty much forgotten about her backstory...now I'm thinking, maybe they shouldn't have included her back story because there isn't enough time to explain everything. What happened to the rest of her old clan? Will she avenge her mom's murder? Who was the guy that she killed before falling into the lake and losing her memory?

Regarding Chu Qiao's cold attitude toward Yuwen Yue, I actually don't mind it. I see it as a part of her character and a result of her past tragedies. As someone who experienced the cruelty of slavery and social stratification, as well as the death of loved ones, she doesn't trust anyone completely, even if they are nice to her. She was pretty indifferent toward Yan Xun when she was still Yuwen Yue's maid even though Yan Xun had saved her many times. It was only after fighting together and witnessing Yan Xun's tragedy that she opened up to him, because they experienced similar tragedies. Also, even though Yuwen Yue didn't technically kill her brother, he still died because of the Yuwen family; same goes for her sister. Moreover, she probably still feels that YWY only trained her to use her. Don't forget, they are still on opposite sides. As much as YWY loves her, he's loyalty is still with the Wei emperor, at least on the surface. The Wei emperor will continue to try to kill Yan Xun so YWY and CQ are still enemies on the surface. Therefore, I can't expect CQ to welcome YWY back with open arms just because he saved her several times. YWY doesn't express his feelings openly and CQ, although strategic and clever militarily, doesn't have a great emotional intelligence, so she probably isn't aware of YWY's feelings. I'm sure she has feelings for him, but it's buried under all her other baggages and it probably won't be until the river scene that she fully realizes her love for YWY.

I think the audience's frustration with CQ's coldness toward YWY is a telling sign that the director/writers have deviated the focus from Yan Xun's tragedy therefore reason for revenge to sympathy toward YWY, which is a sign of bad story telling. They spent 6-8 episodes on the Yan Xun's family massacre, basically explaining to the audience why YX will turn dark and building sympathy for his character, yet a few episodes later, audiences almost forget about YX's tragedy because the focus is all on YWY and how his love for CQ isn't acknowledged or reciprocated. Those dramatic and tragic upstage, (ie YX's mom's emotional speech, YX's devastation watching his family members dying before his eyes, etc.) feel like a waste since the effect worn off so quickly. It also feels like a waste of the actor/actress' talent since they gave such emotional acting and the effect didn't last.

That was way longer than anticipated, lol. Anyways, I'm excited CQ is finally in the army- been looking forward to her journey to becoming a general for so long!

  18. Yessss, it's finaaaaally Monday!!! First of all, Zhao Liying looks soooo pretty with that hair style and outfit!! Also, Xing/Yue couple reunite for 5 mintues and Yuwen Yue already saves her once, hehehe.

I love how Yan Xun and Chu Qiao used Wei Shuyou to get rid of Zhao Xifeng, lol- killing two birds at once! Revenge mode on! I've been meaning to say this for a while now, that Wei Shouyou's vampire teeth are creepy.

It seems like the plot is moving along but it still feels slow to me. There's still so much to be covered!

I had a thought while watching today's episodes. Chu Qiao's love pentagon reminds me of the love plot in Scarlet Heart. The silly 13th prince in PA= silly 10th prince in SH. Yan Xun= 8th prince in SH, who ends up losing the female lead because of their desire for power. Yuwen Yue= 4th prince in SH, both cold on the outside but always protecting the female lead secretly.

Btw, I'm thinking of watching either Legend of Zu or Mystic Nine, both with Zhao Liying and William Chan. Has anyone seen either of them? How is it?

  19. Pleaaase do not cast Angelababy as Chu Qiao!!! No offense to AB, but her acting skill is nowhere near the level of Zhao Liying and she will not be able to portray the complexity of CQ’s character. Seeing the success of PA right now, it makes sense to capitalize on that and make a sequel. Maybe that was the plan all along, which would explain why the drama only includes half of the novel. Maybe if the audiences protest loud enough, they’ll find a better actress, even if it’s not Zhao Liying. Goshhh how I wish the original cast would return…

  20. It pains us all to see Yuwen Yue being misunderstood by so many people. The drama is definitely making the audience sympathize with his character, especially the fact that he is helplessly stuck in a world where he can never do what he wants, or even show the emotions that he feels.

Anyways, Shawn Dou is doing a great job portraying Yan Xun's transition from the silly, outgoing naive boy to a cold, vengeful man. I don't how famous he is in China, but this drama will definitely shot him to stardom.

I really enjoyed watching Chu Qiao set up traps all over their house in Ep 32. She's so cool!

Okay, whatever happened to Chu Qiao's backstory? Doesn't she want to find out who killed her mother? Also, she totally could've gone to that funny shop owner to regain her full memory back, then use her old clan, aka Fengyun Clan to escape. It feels like that plot got left hanging there. I sure hope the writers bring that story to full circle in the upcoming episodes.

Anyways, excited for the Xing/Yue reunion on monday!

  21. LOL, I love  how Yuwen Huai just destroyed the Eye of God and it's thousands years of secrets five minutes after he's introduced to it. So much for wanting power, now he can't handle it. Seeing him cracking under the pressure of so much secret made me laugh. Also, apparently Creepy grandpa might be his father?

Seeing Yuwen Yue and Yan Xun's friendship dissolve was sad. No more bromance :(.

The emperor is seriously terrible at his job. Apparently he didn't think about he consequences of killing Yan Xun's family. 1. Now he can't find a suitable heir to manage Northern Yan, since all the royal families want a piece of it and it will throw off the balance of power. 2. Yan Xun, the only surviving member will avenge for his family. I mean, you can't not expect him to revolt after wiping his entire family out.

Anyways, I really need the pace to pick up now. There is still so much plot to be covered. Also, when will Chu Qiao gain the rest of her memory back??

  22. OMGG the director sure knows how to make devastating scenes even more heart wrenching by slowing everything down 20x. Ep 25 and 26 were seriously painful to watch, especially ep 25. The director must really want the audience to understand the reason behind Yan Xun's revenge later on. However, I wish he'd stop cutting the camera to the faces of Yan Xun's despicable former friends. It was distracting and frankly annoying (and a waste of time). All they did was smirk at Yan Xun's misery. I wanted to richard simmons slap them so badly!!!

Even though Zhao Liying's scenes were short in these episodes, she still manages to shine- ie how she killed that assassin in the prison, her motivational speech to Yan Xun, etc.

I heard Zhao Liying say in an interview that the drama only covers half of the original novel and now that we are almost half way through the drama, I'm starting to feel sad that this is the case. They should've cut out some of the inner court dramas at Yuwen Yue's house with that girl Jin Zhu, also Chu Qiao's little sisters' scenes. We probably won't get to witness Chu Qiao epic journey to end slavery and establish a new dynasty and that's really a shame. She could've been even more badass...
