“Train To Busan” Is The First Korean Film Of 2016 To Break This Audience Record

Train-to-Busan.png

On August 7, the film “Train to Busan” officially topped over 10 million theatergoers!

The movie was released on July 20 and has been a box office hit ever since. It is the first Korean movie of 2016 to overcome the 10 million viewers mark. The previous record for highest box office this year was held by “A Violent Prosecutor” (about 9.7 million viewers).

“Train to Busan” had been named as one of the “Big 4” blockbusters of the summer in Korea. The Big 4 also includes “Operation Chromite,” “The Last Princess,” and “Tunnel.” “Train to Busan” was also screened at the 69th Cannes Film Festival earlier this year.

This is Gong Yoo, Jung Yoo Mi, and Kim Soo Ahn’s first “10 million” movie and boasts the highest viewership score in their entire filmography. It would be the first “10 million” for all the leading actors if you exclude Ma Dong Seok‘s special appearance in “Veteran.”

Gong Yoo had previously stated, “Even imagining reaching 10 million is terrifying. I would be happy with five million. Even five million would be my highest score ever.”

It is also the director Yeon Sang Ho’s first “10 million” movie. He has garnered praise for producing an excellent zombie movie for Korean audiences despite Hollywood having raised the bar so high.

Congratulations to the cast and crew of “Train to Busan!”

‘Train’ Runs to Korean Record at Singapore Box Office

Train to Busan,” which is the fastest driving film of the year in Korea, this week achieved the box office opening record for a Korean film in Singapore.

"The zombie horror film, distributed by Clover Films and Golden Village, scored US$453,00 (S$611,000) putting it second in the chart behind only “Suicide Squad.” The DC comics superhero movie was the runaway leader with US$1.93 million (S$2.6 million) in 4 days. But it was enough to beat “Jason Bourne” which played in its second week to US$400,000 (S$540,000.)

The previous best Korean film in Singapore was “The Host,” which opened with US$252,000 (S$340,000) and went on to score US$507,000 (S$685,000) in 2016. It is expected to top the all time best performance of “200 Pounds Beauty” which weighed in with US$727,000 in 2007. (All data cited are supplied by the Clover as there is no public source for box office information in Singapore.)

“Train” became one of the fastest films to 10 million admissions in Korea, achieving that milestone in 19 days of official release, though extensive previews distort the comparison. Only 14 films have ever clocked up that total in Korea.
