The action blockbuster film “Typhoon,” starring Chang Dong-keon, Lee Jung-jae

and Lee Mi-yeon and directed by Kwak Kyung-taek, drew 280,000 viewers in 540

theaters nationwide on its opening day of Dec. 14, according to the movie’s

distributor, CJ Entertainment.

In Seoul, some 84,000 people went to see the movie on its opening day.

”Typhoon” broke the record of “Taegeukgi” by Kang Jae-kyu, which drew 230,000

viewers when it opened on Feb. 5, 2004. All in all, “Taegeukgi” drew 320,000

viewers by its opening day, including 90,000 viewers who attended the movie’s

premiere the day before it opened in theaters.

“The movie literally set an ‘explosive’ opening record because it stars top actors

and was directed by a first-class film director. We’ll see if this feat will continue

down the road,” said a person from CJ Entertainment.

Typhoon: 560,000 Tickets in Two Days

Dec 16,2005

It was very likely Kwak Kyung-Taek's latest blockbuster Typhoon, starring Jang Dong-Gun and Lee Jung-Jae, would do well. With a budget of 18 Billion Won (over 4 for marketing only) -- the largest in Korean film history -- and securing an amazing 540 screens (around a third of the nation's total screens) for its debut, the film went on to double Peter Jackson's King Kong in pre-order sales, with final rates around the 45-50% against Kong's 25%. But people in the industry were nervous anyway, as blockbusters in Korea either seem to strike it big or crash and burn, rarely falling in the middle.

Those fears are over though, as 'Typhoon' recorded an opening day of 280,000 tickets sold nationwide (84,000 in Seoul). Kang Je-Gyu's Taegukgi actually did better in 2004, with 320,000 tickets sold on its opening day, but that was only after the 90,000 tickets from paid advanced screenings were added to the first day intake of 230,000. Second day went more or less the same, with another nationwide score of 280,000 (76,000 in Seoul), bringing the total to around 560,000 tickets. Distributors CJ Entertainment announced that not only women in their 20s were a big part of the pie, but also men in their 30s came in droves. People are now expecting the film to beat 'Taegukgi's first week of 1,770,000 tickets, perhaps even going for the 2 Million. And after that, who knows what will happen. Kang's blockbuster, starring again Jang Dong-Gun and Won Bin, sold 10 Million tickets in only 39 days, and later went on to become the top grossing Korean film of all time.

'Typhoon' sets five-day box office record for 2005

2005.12.19

SEOUL, Dec. 19 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's new high-budget movie "Typhoon" drew 1.8 million people during its first five days in theaters, setting a local box-office record for this year, its distributor said Monday.

The action film released nationwide Wednesday broke the August record of 1.4 million by "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance," a prize-winning thriller directed by Park Chan-wook, said CJ Entertainment.

The blockbuster directed by Kwak Gyeong-taek has been the talk of the town because of its star actors, record budget and theme of inter-Korean confrontation.

The plot centers on an attempt by a North Korean pirate, played by Jang Dong-gun, to make a nuclear attack on the Korean Peninsula, and efforts by a South Korean agent, played by Lee Jung-jae, to stop him.

The agent comes to sympathize with the North Korean, who grew up penniless in China after witnessing as a child the massacre of his family after a failed attempt to seek asylum in the South.

Shot in South Korea, Thailand and Russia, the movie cost 15 billion won (US$14.7 million) for production and 4 billion won for publicity.

The divided-nation theme has been frequently used in South Korean record-breaking movies in recent years, including "Shiri" (1998 ), "Silmido" (2003), "Taegukgi: The Brotherhood of War" (2003) and "Welcome to Dongmakgol" (2005).

"Taegukgi," a tale of two brothers during the Korean War, which brought lead actor Jang to international stardom, holds the record of 2 million viewers in its first five days.

"Typhoon" was released on the highest number of screens, 540, at 115 theaters nationwide.

Blockbuster 'Typhoon' to Hit U.S. Next Year

Tuesday, December 20, 2005 14:45:05

2005122025_big.jpg

Actor Jang Dong-gun's new blockbuster film "Typhoon" will hit American theaters next year.

CJ Entertainment on Tuesday said it will have its U.S.-based partner Dreamworks distribute the film in the first half of next year. CJ owns five percent of Dreamworks.

Starring actors Jang and Lee Jung-jae, the film in South Korea drew a record 1.8 million moviegoers in its first week, breaking the previous mark of 1.77 million held by the Korean War blockbuster "Taegukgi."

"Typhoon" is also the country's most expensive film at more than 15 billion won for production and another five billion won for marketing.

The action thriller is about a North Korean pirate named Sin who is rejected by South Korea after fleeing the North and vows revenge.

태풍 (Typhoon) Already Past 3 Million Tickets

It might not be the kind of Christmas gift Kwak Kyung-Taek wants -- that would be reaching the break even point at 5 Million tickets sold -- but his latest blockbuster 태풍 (Typhoon) is quickly reserving its place at the very top of the yearly box office. Released on December 14, the film has so far sold 3,254,000 tickets in less than two weeks, getting close to the Million tickets in Seoul alone (920,000). The film, starring Lee Jung-Jae and Jang Dong-Gun, sold 210,000 tickets over December 24 and 25, with a huge release of 500 screens nationwide (down 40 from its initial release, but still over 1/3 of the country's total screens).

With a budget of 20 Billion Won, the highest of all time in Korea, 'Typhoon' is already around the Top 5 of the year, and could challenge the 8 Million of 웰컴 투 동막골 (Welcome to Dongmakgol) by early next month. Complete box office report later this week.
