Long clip of the event from yesterday's HK fan meet:

Credit: 520stars2 @youtube
There was a little incident where a fan refused on letting go on KDW that guards needed to escort her down. The incident is in the video and you could see that the girl was trying to say something to Dong Won. He didn't really look scared but more of shock. Still he actually tried to bend down and listen to what the fan was trying to say to him. He handled it pretty well. :)

London Korean film fest to host industry

UK showcase to host 55 films, actors, directors, producers, programmers.

The ninth edition of the London Korean Film Festival (Nov 6-15) will be bookended by the European Premiere of Yoon Jong-bin’s Kundo: Age of the Rampant and Im Kwon-taek’s Revivre.

This year’s LKFF will present 55 films in the UK capital before touring select UK cinemas.

Kundo, starring Ha Jung-woo (Time) and Gang Dong-won (My Brilliant Life), is a period-action film about a group of bandits who rise up against the unjust nobility by stealing from the rich and giving to the poor. Director Jong-bin, star Dong-won and producer Han Jae-duk will be present for a Q&A following the screening.

Adapted from Kim Hoon’s prize-winning short story a middle-aged man’s conflicting emotions as he loses his wife to terminal cancer but indulges in fantasies about a young female work colleague, Revivre is Kwon-taek’s (Chunhyang) 102nd feature and will close the festival with Actor Ahn Sungki on hand for a Q&A following the screening.

Other confirmed guests at the festival include directors Park Chan-kyong and July Jung; actors Jung Woo-sung and Donghae; producer Lee Jun-dong; and Busan International Film Festival programmer Nam Dong-chul.

Kundo: Age of the Rampant

After a couple of seriously impressive contributions to this year’s BFI London Film Festival, Korean cinema comes into sharper focus in November with the 9th London Korean Film Festival. Expect weird, wonderful and impeccably-composed cinema as movies new and old are screened across the capital before going on tour around the UK afterwards.

The opening night film is Kundo: Age of the Rampant, which could be about anything with a title like that, and we’d still want to see it. It’s actually a Robin Hood-style period action thriller about bandits taking on a bunch of scum-sucking feudal overlords who’ve been oppressing the poor. (Incidentally, the soundtrack to the film was mixed at Abbey Road Studios).

Then there’s a welcome spotlight on contemporary director Kim Ki-duk, who has produced an extraordinary body of dreamy work which manages to surprise at just about every turn. If you don’t know his work — mesmerising fare such as The Isle or profound and nasty meditations like Bad Guy — it’s a great opportunity to get better-acquainted with his singular visions up on the big screen. The festival will present Kim’s three latest titles: Moebius, Pieta and the UK premiere of controversial new film One on One, in which victims of a brutal crime are terrorised by a mysterious sect.

Big-hitting genre fare includes Cold Eyes, a slick techno-thriller about a surveillance team taking on a criminal mastermind, plus The Killer Behind The Old Man which centres on a hitman reluctant to rub out a pensioner. As usual with top-drawer Korean genre entries, expect typical tropes to be subverted.

Then Professor Kim Hong-june and the Korean Film Archive have picked out a set of K-Classics, including the Hitchcock-infused domestic thriller The Housemaid, from 1960. Some of the films in the K-Classics strand will also be made available online.

There are over 50 screenings in all with the majority to be held in the Odeon West End, plus additional London venues such as Odeon Covent Garden, Odeon Kingston and the Korean Cultural Centre.

The London Korean Film Festival runs from 6-21 November. Click here for the full schedule

REVIEW: Kundo – Age of the Rampant (2014)By ALBERT VALENTIN | Kung Fu Cinema
4.8 Stars (?)

Part-Robin Hood, part-spaghetti western, all historical piece, this Korean action-comedy has been making waves as one of the most entertaining films of the year and that is definitely true.

kundo-200x251.jpgIt is the year 1859. During the Joseon Dynasty of Korea, the villagers have fallen to famine and poverty. Corruption from the rich and the governments has reached an all-time high. Even worse, those who have spoken out against the corruption have been executed. Some of the remaining survivors have found refuge in Mount Jiri, where they have decided to become a heroic group of bandits who steal from the rich and give back to the poor. They are known as the “Kundo”.

Jo Yoon (Kang Dong-Won), the illegitimate son of governor Jo Won-Suk (Song Young-Chang), has plans to make sure he is the only heir to take over when his father, who has become ill passes. With his half-brother executed wrongfully, he is set to take over. However, there stands one little issue. His sister-in-law is pregnant, in which should she give birth, would cause Jo Yoon to not be the only heir. He asks a lowly butcher named Dolmuchi (Ha Jung-Woo) to find the girl and kill her for a nice reward. The night he decides to do the job, he ends up not doing it after being attacked by a member of the Kundo, a vicious monk who has been assigned to protect the girl. Little does Dolmuchi know his refusal would change his life forever.

When news of the refusal is heard, Jo Yoon orders Dolmuchi and his family killed. His men torch his home, killing his sister Gok-Ji (Han Ye-Ri) and mother (Kim Hae-Suk). However, despite having burns, Dolmuchi survives the attack and goes after Jo Yoon. However, he learns Jo Yoon has impeccable combat skills and sends the butcher to be executed. However, members of the Kundo save him and learning of his intentions, decide to take him under their wing. The butcher has now become a member of the Kundo and while he helps his new friends do what they do best, he has truly only one thing in mind: revenge.

Directed by Yoon Jong-Bin and written by Jeon Cheol-Hong, the film is definitely an entertaining one that keeps one at the edge of their seats in terms of execution and performance. In terms of performances, lead actor Ha Jung-Woo is just great to watch as the butcher turned hero Dolmuchi. He is seen as just a lowly man who is offered to do a job but when he refuses, his life changes forever with the death of his family at the hands of the evil tyrant who hired him in the first place. When it means that Dolumchi changes, not only does he change physically and has revenge on his mind, it is as if he gains self confidence and this is where it can get funny: he becomes a smartaleck at times when he confronts his opponents. Even more the funny, in a nod to perhaps INGLORIOUS BASTERDS (2009), Dolmuchi has the tendency to take the topknot, a sign of masculinity, off his opponents using his blade.

Kang Dong-Won brings out a dangerous performance as lead villain Jo Yoon. It is refreshing to see a villain’s backstory in this type of film, where it can be a rarity. We learn he is the son of the governor and a courtesan. In typical fashion, the governor’s wife has nothing but hatred for her husband’s son and when she finally gives birth to a son, Jo Yoon’s jealousy nearly gets the best of him. From his introduction, one would think Jo Yoon might have a righteous side from his story, until it is the birth of his half-brother where his true intentions are revealed. Kang is impressive in the role of the deadly Jo Yoon, who brings corruption to a new level of hatred.

The rest of the Kundo are quite impressive as well. Leader Dae-Ho, played by Lee Sung-Min, is seen as a righteous man despite his bandit nature. Yun Ji-Hye’s Ma-Hyang tends to have a sort of comic relief at times when two kids she cares for constantly insult her yet when it comes to action, she is quite the archer. Ma Dong-Seok’s Chun-Bo is the big brutish member of the group, using his power to dispatch opponents while the mute Geum-Sam, played by Jeong Man-Sik, is impressive with his unarmed and running skills. The Vicious Monk, played by Lee Geung-Young, acts as the spiritual member of the group and as a mentor and strategist.

Korea’s action director extraordinaire Jung Doo-Hong, once again shows why he is one of the best in the world today. He makes the cast look very impressive with their various skills in combat. One can’t help but get all jittery (in a good way) when they seen blades spinning around or towards opponents to make the weapons fights well done. As mentioned, there are a few nice unarmed fights on the parts of Ma-Hyang in the opening fight and Geum-Sam, who acts as a counterpart at times to the more bulky Chun-Bo, who prefers to use a weapon that looks like a giant ball in a scarf of sorts. Meanwhile, Ha Jung-Woo gets to unleash two blades that resemble his butcher blades and even goes as far as training in a bamboo forest to perfect his skills. The action complements the story very well overall in its 138-minute running time.

KUNDO: AGE OF THE RAMPANT is definitely one of the best Korean action films to come out today. A sort of hybrid period piece, it is definitely worth the 138-minute running time with a healthy dose of juxtaposing action, comedy, and story. Anyone looking for an entertaining action piece will want to check this out.

Those who are anticipating a North American release will be happy to know that Well Go USA will be releasing the film on DVD and Blu-Ray on October 21. While the extras on the Blu-Ray include only trailers, the film itself is definitely worth seeing in high definition.
