Guest cpopbaby19
yes. i think this is OFFICIAL. | read first page before postingBefore anything... I've been noticing in this thread that there's alot of people just telling that they can speak Tagalog and what not. Um, I don't think that fits to the thread because this thread does not really ask if there are soompiers who can speak Tagalog/Filipino/Other dialects and what not. So please.. STOP POSTING THINGS LIKE "Um, Hi! I can help you guys in this thread because I know how to speak Tagalog. Thanks! See you around~" I don't mean to offend anyone but posts like that, I believe, are out of topic. Can we only post here if you have anything to be translated to English or to Filipino or questions regarding grammar, synonyms, sentence construction and what not? I don't want this thread closed or warned because there are alot of irrelevant posts. Thanks. ---- Hello! you can post whatever questions related to the filipino language [grammar, tenses, translations.. etc.] you name it. I guess y'all can also ask questions or translations for Bisayan/Ilocano/Kapampangan and other dialects in the philippines since there are soompiers who know how to speak them. and maybe even pronunciations. feel free to ask whatever and we will answer your questions as clear as possible. also, i made this thread to help soompi save up space. ^__^; Also, if you guys have other links which aren't mentioned yet. post it up, and i'll edit it. xiam9
Nice!!! I've been wanting to make a Filipino help thread for a while now, but I wasn't too sure if people, especially those from other ethnicities, would be interested to even read bother clicking on it. Anyway, I hope people would come and check this out! Filipino is such a nice, warm and pleasant language. It wouldn't hurt to learn a phrase or two. Here are a few of my favorite Filipino phrases: Mahal kita- I love you Gusto kita- I like you(I've never actually heard people say this, only in movies hehe!) BRB! for more! ChunJin
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JtKzysisDQw I saw this on youtube and I was like WOW o_O! lol! The language is kind of weird ... Since there's a lot of dialects :\. My counters are weird metung, adwa etc. lol. I don't know how isa changes to metung and other words =p. But here's non-dialect stuff =) -> Kailangan ko ng taksi. [i need a taxi] (be careful! Lol crazy drivers >_<) -> Papunta ako sa ____. [i am going to ___]. (example: Papunta ako sa Angeles City.) -> Nasaan ang ___. [Where is ___]. (example: Nasaan ang mall?) -> Gusto kong ___. [i want __]. There's a lot you can do with this. --> Gusto kong pumunta sa Borocay. [i want to go to Borocay] (pumanta = go to place) --> Gusto kong kumain ng pananghalian. [i want to eat lunch] (kumain = eat) ___ ako. <-- I'm ___ . Other words that can go with this [American = Americano, Korean = koreano, Japan = Hapon].

uruchai
wow, this is very good. it'll be really nice if people will be interested in learning Filipino/Tagalog. there's also this thing in our language called "Taglish". well, I use it all the time. I'll give some example (but not those annoying Taglish). Are you going shopping? - Magsha-shopping ka ba? [in full Filipino words: Mamimili ka ba?] Can you get my bag? - Pwede bang kunin mo ang bag ko? [i dont know the Filipino word of bag ) What's our food? - Anong food natin? [Anong pagkain natin?] these are just some examples I can think of. basically, if you're cant quite express yourself fluently/fully using the language, substitute the English words. Guest mangchilo
I think Tagalog's cool. ^^ I only know six or so Filipinos/as personally, though. Those're some good phrases to start with. Salamat! I have a question. So, Filipino is a language, right, but Filipino does not = Tagalog? Are they similar? Do people usually speak Filipino now or do most people just know it and speak Tagalog and other dialects most of the time? And are Tagalog and Bisaya mutually intelligible? Thanks to anyone who answers.

[Anong pagkain natin?] these are just some examples I can think of. basically, if you're cant quite express yourself fluently/fully using the language, substitute the English words. I totally get what you mean by ANNOYING taglish! Like when people say "can you MAKE sarado(close) the pintuan(door)?"(can you close the door?) OMG!!!!! that's not even grammatically correct! Get your taglish right people!!!! And I agree with you, there are words that are hard to find the tagalog equivalent for(or if you do, it might sound too formal or even poetic hehe!) so everyone just uses the english word for it. I think it would be really helpful for people who'd want to learn Filipino that we right down our examples exactly the way we say it. Like, instead of: Pwede bang kunin mo ang sapatos ko? - can you get my shoes (the word "ang" makes it sound too formal) use this: Pwede bang kunin mo yung sapatos ko?(interrogative) or Pakuha ng sapatos(command) ----------------------------- joogrlpekaun ALthough Filipino isnt the most widely spoken language in the Philippines, given the fact that only a small number of the population use it on a daily basis, mostly in NCR or National Capital Region, it is regarded to as the mother language. You might be wondering why Filipino is the main language when only a tiny bit of the population uses(on a daily basis) it. That's because people of other dialects(?) knows a good amount of Filipino/tagalog and are able to communicate well with those who speak Filipino. So when someone from, say, a Filipino/tagalog-Speaking region visits a whatevadialect-speaking place, they're(whatevadialect) able to coomunicate with them. As for those *pointing to myself* who knows nothing but Filipino and only a bit of tagalog, we feel so clueless and pathetic since people from other regions know how to speak Filipino even if they don't use it regularly, but we on the other hand don't understand there dialect. Actually, the term "Filipino" only came about a few years ago, coz when I was still in elementary, we were taught that Tagalog was the national language. Regarding your question if Filipino is different from Tagalog; Yes they are different. The tagalog dialect is only one of the many that influences the Filipino language. The Filipino language is composed of many borrowed words from english, tagalog, bisaya(dialect), spanish, hindu, chinese, malay and many x3 more. (soory, I've completely forgotten my grammar lessons. There are actaully terms used for these) If you're curious as to how the English language affects Filipino, Here's an example: The word 'INFLUENCE' can be wrtitten in Filipino as 'INFLUENSIYA'. Anyway, I don't know how to explain things further coz I've already forgotten the terms in Filipino grammar. --------- I'm so pathetic, I don't know any other dialect but a small amount of Tagalog. And I'm not even that good at it! I wish I can speak some really cool dialect like Chabacano or the dialect in Batanes.

Since Filipino is mostly Tagalog, everyone can naturally understand it (i think) but not everyone can understand Bisaya, Ilonggo, Chabacano and all those other dialects unless you learn it. Although it'd be nice to speak Chabacano. ^^

Guest MUGETSU
Filipino isn't as hard because we don't have our own writing system.
