Premiere Watch: The Tyrant

by missvictrix

PYH2024071506910001300_P4.jpg

Time slot: Wednesday (single drop)
Broadcaster: Disney+
Genre: Sci-fi, action, thriller
Episode count: 4

Reasons to watch: It’s clear that Disney+ has been trying to fill the void of [good] sci-fi in the dramaverse, and The Tyrant is their next offering in that genre. It boasts an amazing cast of Cha Seung-won, Kim Sun-ho, and Kim Kang-woo. But, the most interesting thing is that it was meant as a movie — a spinoff of The Witch series — but then became a 4-episode drama on the cutting room floor. This is either a mark of genius, or a mark of disaster, and I’m looking forward to finding out which.

TL;DR: How much good-looking can you fit in one 4-episode sci-fi drama?

Aug 13, 2024
by J Lee

With its premiere just around the corner, “The Tyrant” has offered a sneak peek into its captivating narrative with a new preview!

“The Tyrant” is a chase action drama that unfolds after the final sample from a project called the “Tyrant Program” disappears due to a delivery mishap. This sets off a chain of pursuits involving individuals with different motives, each competing to secure the sample.

Kim Seon Ho plays Director Choi, an unofficial mastermind behind the program, while Kim Kang Woo portrays Paul, a secret agent from the American intelligence agency.

The newly released teaser captures a conversation between Paul and Director Choi. The two characters are seen on a bench in an apparent reunion after more than a decade. Paul, wearing dark glasses and exuding a mysterious aura, casually chats with Director Choi before getting straight to the point: “You know why I came this time, right?” Director Choi, playing innocent, responds, “Well, do I have to know?” Paul then insists, “Stop pretending and just give me what you took. You can’t even take advantage of that in Korea.”

Despite Paul’s persistence in trying to obtain the sample, Director Choi doesn’t give in easily. Paul then quips about the situation, “If this doesn’t work out, I would get fired. You know how hard it is to find another job in this industry.” Director Choi replies, “I can only help you if I know what you’re talking about.”

Feeling that words alone won’t do the trick, Paul suggests they grab a meal together. Director Choi then proposes having kimchijjigae (kimchi stew), reminiscent of the dishes they enjoyed as students.

The Tyrant: Episodes 1-4 (Series Review)

by lovepark

The spin-off series of The Witch movies is as bloody and brutal as its predecessors with a fast-paced four-episode run that leaves you at the edge of your seat. Alongside an assured director and a strong cast, The Tyrant delivers a hard-boiled action thriller that is not for the faint of heart.

SERIES REVIEW

For those familiar with Director Park Hoon-jung, The Tyrant has his fingerprints all over it. The offbeat characterizations, the gratuitous fight scenes, and the intricate storytelling have become his signature style along with his cool color palette, and for the past decade, he has carved his name in Chungmuro with his noir films. Debuting as a screenwriter with I Saw the Devil and then making a splash as a director with New World, Park’s works are gritty, violent, and dark. In other words, The Tyrant is a far cry from the standard K-drama fare, and you’ll either enjoy it or abhor it.

While The Tyrant exists within the universe of The Witch films, this spin-off series stands on its own without requiring prior knowledge of the previous two installments. The basic premise is that all the world powers have secretly invested in human experimentation with varying results, including South Korea. However, as a small country, most of their efforts have been snuffed, and the last remaining member of this pro-Korea faction is DIRECTOR CHOI (Kim Sun-ho). A diehard patriot who believes in individual sacrifices for the greater good, Director Choi is the leader of the eponymous program “The Tyrant” — an unsanctioned research team that has discovered a semi-sentient “virus” that grants superhuman powers at a deadly cost.

Unfortunately for Director Choi, his program has been discovered and deemed a threat by foreign entities, so rather than have his work stolen, he decides to destroy it. However, one sample gets confiscated by the National Intelligence Service (NIS), and the entire four episodes of this show revolves around the different chess pieces in pursuit of this last remaining vial. Despite the straightforward plot and emphasis on action, The Tyrant is more than a simple watch, and Park’s asynchronous narrative choices and rich character histories give the story an added layer of complexity. Though it takes a while to buildup, once the pace picks up, it never slows down.

In order for Director Choi to steal the vial back, he enlists the help of safe-cracker CHAE JA-KYUNG (Jo Yoon-soo), the daughter of a recently murdered hitman who happens to be a formidable force herself. The only downside is that she has dissociative identity disorder and talks with her “twin brother” in the middle of conversations. None of that matters to Director Choi, though, since he orders ever single field operative to be killed once the sample is retrieved, and the one to fulfill that mission is retired agent IM SANG (Cha Seung-won). Arguably the strongest “non-powered” human in this world, Im Sang appears to be an affable gentleman who speaks formally to all, but his placid attitude only emphasizes the ruthlessness of his actions.

Most of the adrenaline-filled fights derive from these two characters as they use everything and anything to take down their foes. Hatchets to heads, sticks to eyes, and glass shards to necks, whatever object these two possess becomes bad news for their enemies, and the show doesn’t shy away from the gruesome kills Ja-kyung and Im Sang execute with alarming frequency. However, in spite of their growing death toll, these two also happened to be the funniest characters in the show, and their scenes together were some of my favorites. Their uncomplicated motivations coupled with their dogged determination had a crackling synergy that not only propelled the plot forward but also injected tense scenes with an abrupt sense of humor that highlighted just how unhinged all the characters were. These brief moments also gave the audience room to breath and allowed the action sequences to build rather than overwhelm especially in the latter half.

While everyone is a villain in their own right, the true antagonist of this series is American agent PAUL (Kim Kang-woo). Wary of the Tyrant program, he arrives in Korea to retrieve the sample for “world peace” and believes the U.S. is better equipped to handle such technology. His words drip with contempt, and he spits out insults with a smile plastered on his face. However, this borderline-psychopathic man is the only one able to stop Director Choi, and with two superpowered humans on his side, very few people can stand up to him. Ultimately, the conflict between Director Choi and Paul is not about physical violence like the one portrayed with the two killers but a representation of the power struggle between Korea and the U.S. It is a critique of the West’s domineering insertion into other country’s affairs that perpetuates the hegemony, and though the message is a bit heavy-handed, it elevates the story from a simple action-packed thriller to a tense noir filled with betrayals and multifaceted characters.

Unaware of the larger conspiracy, Ja-kyung’s single-minded goal is to exact revenge on the man who betrayed her, YEON MO-YONG (Mu Jin-sung) who also happens to be a pivotal figure in this chase. Knowing that Director Choi has no use for him, Mo-yong turns himself in to the NIS only to be then captured by Paul’s group. As all the important players start to convene, the show climbs towards its climax, resulting in an intense final confrontation as the rest of the characters are clued into the twist the audience was privy to all along: Ja-kyung has the vial. The real clincher, though, is that the vial breaks during a fight, and the sample enters Ja-kyung’s bloodstream, turning her into The Tyrant.

Up till now, no one has been able to control the virus, but as Director Choi stands in a room littered with dead bodies, he realizes that Ja-kyung has accomplished the impossible. A light has appeared at the end of this dark tunnel, and against all odds, hope arises. However, Director Choi’s goal was never survival for himself but for the country he served, and just as he demanded sacrifice from his subordinates, the director holds himself to the same standard. Refusing to let his work fall into another country’s hands, he makes sure the bioweapon remains on Korean soil, and for anyone who has seen Park’s previous films, the conclusion is unsurprising yet nonetheless satisfying.

Cha Seung Won, Kim Kang Woo, And Kim Seon Ho Talk About "The Tyrant" And Admiration For Each Other

The cast of “The Tyrant”—Cha Seung Won, Kim Kang Woo, and Kim Seon Ho—have graced Harper’s Bazaar Korea with a stunning pictorial!

In an interview that followed the photo shoot, Cha Seung Won talked about his character Im Sang, a former agent and killer. He said, “He has a meticulous yet foolish side in daily life, but when he is on a mission, he becomes like a blunt weapon that cuts sharply. In the scene where he clashes with high school students, he appears particularly clumsy, but that was the approach I suggested to director Park Hoon Jung to highlight the contrast with his mission-focused demeanor.”

He then teased the series, saying, “I was quite impressed by the dialogue between Director Choi with a twisted mind and Paul, who is into the concept of ‘sadaejuui.’ Personally, the scenes that touch on national sovereignty and the accompanying lines were particularly impactful for me.”

tyrant.jpgtyrant1_ccce10.jpg

Kim Kang Woo, who plays the fearless chaser Paul, shared his admiration for the drama, remarking, “Hong Kong movies like ‘A Better Tomorrow’ still make my heart race. I could feel a reckless confidence through the scenes created by characters who face off with a willingness to die, driven by their pride, confidence, and adrenaline. ‘The Tyrant’ is no different. It’s rare to encounter a drama with such unique and distinct characters.”

He also praised Kim Seon Ho, with whom he reunited after last year’s ‘The Childe,’ saying, “I was impressed by Seon Ho’s portrayal of Director Choi’s loneliness. Watching the rough cut, I was impressed by how Seon Ho is mature enough to embody both masculinity and solitude.”

tyrant2.jpg

Kim Seon Ho, who portrays Director Choi, shared a scene that is memorable for him. He said, “Director Choi’s characteristics are revealed in the scene where he’s having a toast and engaging in a strategic confrontation. It’s when he reveals his true intentions for the first time, after concealing his secret project throughout. I played this moment as slyly as possible to make it more dramatic.”

When asked about what he learned from Cha Seung Won and Kim Kang Woo, he said, “I want to emulate Kim Kang Woo’s sharpness. I remember crying while watching ‘My Teacher, Mr. Kim’ when I was a student. Cha Seung Won excels in ordinary roles with such ease and flexibility. I have always wanted to emulate him for these qualities.”

Jo Yoon Soo reveals how she transformed into Cha Jae Kyung in The Tyrant.

The Tyrant is a sci-fi action drama that portrays the chaos that unfolds after the last sample of the Tyrant Program disappears in an accident.

Rising star Jo Yoon Soo played the role of Cha Jae Kyung, who gets entangled in the chaos of the sample's disappearance.

QJBg3Q_2f.png

Jo Yoon Soo revealed, "I had three rounds of auditions over a month and a half. Director Park Hoon Jung asked me, 'Can you use your body well?' [for the action scenes] and I replied, 'I'm a dance major, so I can do well.' But, I had never done action before and didn't have a driver's license, but I started preparing right from the day of the first audition."

She continued, "Since I didn't have many previous works, the director asked, 'Do you have any short film or something where I can see your acting?' I had nothing to show, so I immediately started recruiting staff that day, worked on the script, and made a short film." "It was a piece made exclusively for the director. However, since the work was lacking in some aspects, my agency decided not to show it to the director." "I wanted to play Jae Kyung so badly that I prepared earnestly."

When asked why she was so keen to play Jae Kyung, she responded, "I really admire the director, I really like the senior actors, and when I saw the role, I thought she was unconventional and the kind of role that not only I but every rookie actor would desire. Since it was such a big opportunity, I felt a strong urge to seize it." She added, "After being cast, I asked the director [why he cast me], and he told me that I fit the image of Jae Kyung that he had in mind and that he thought I would suit any character well. Hearing that gave me the courage and confidence to work even harder."

She also recalled the moment when her casting was confirmed. "It was the day after the deadline for the casting decision had passed. I thought I should keep preparing, so I went to my kickboxing and driving classes. I was walking slowly, heartbroken and thinking, 'I guess it didn't work out. It's such a shame. I really wanted this.' Then, I got a call from the company, and I said, 'I guess I didn't make it.' But they replied, 'Why would you think that? You got in.' I remember sitting down on the street, crying, and saying, 'Really? For real? Thank you so much.'"

Given that The Tyrant shares the same cinematic universe as The Witch, she was asked if she felt the pressure of being called "the second Kim Da Mi." Jo Yoon Soo replied, "I think I felt more responsibility than pressure. Since I deeply admire the senior actress and am a fan of The Witch, I consider it an honor just for my name to be mentioned alongside hers. I felt a strong sense of responsibility to ensure I don't tarnish the director's reputation."

RBbgqP_2f.png

Talking about how she transformed Cha Jae Kyung's character, she said, "When I first came across Jae Kyung, I found it challenging to analyze the character because I usually start by finding a point of empathy, but there was nothing about Jae Kyung that I could relate to. I'm very soft-hearted and tend to think a lot, to the point where I obsess over not causing trouble for others. But Jae Kyung is the complete opposite of me, so I struggled with how to approach the character. Since she is the opposite of me, I thought it might be better to approach her with admiration rather than empathy. As I did that, I started to see a lot of cool aspects of her, and I found myself admiring and loving her. I think Jae Kyung's greatest charm is her confidence. ... I'm a bit timid, so I found that [aspect of her] really impressive."

The actress also spoke about the most difficult aspect of filming The Tyrant saying, "There was a lot of action, and I had many concerns when it came to acting, but the thing I found unexpectedly difficult was that, as this was my first leading role, I didn't realize how much repetition would be involved in filming a single scene. I felt a sense of pride, thinking, 'I've really become an actor who's immersed in the project' from a viewer's perspective. I realized that even when something appears effortless, it can actually be difficult. For example, the scene where I eat jjajangmyeon (black bean noodles) required many takes. It made me realize just how hard all the actors work, and I gained a lot of respect for my senior and fellow actors."

"I even cut the hair I had grown my whole life for The Tyrant." The actress shared, "I was really surprised. Since I know myself well, it even seemed funny, like I was wearing clothes that didn't suit me. When I first cut my hair — I had always had long hair my entire life — seeing the awkward look was quite upsetting. It was so short that when I first saw it, I felt like I might shed a tear. ... But while I was at home, feeling down, the director said, 'Now that your hair is short, are you feeling very cold? I didn't know you had this side to you. I was shocked because it suits you so well.' With that, all my sadness disappeared. From then on, I felt proud and thought it looked really good. I even came to really like how I looked with the short cut."

Regarding the smoking scenes, he revealed, "It wasn't a smoking cessation product but a real cigarette. That was one of the difficult parts, and since we had to keep repeating the takes, it was really challenging."

It is also revealed that the 26-year-old actress not only performed gun action scenes but also filmed car chase scenes herself. "I got my license and did it myself. The dangerous scenes were filmed safely. The set was completely safe, with a team doctor and all props safely made. We also had a stunt team, but I was eager to do well, so in the process, I had a few minor injuries. Since there was a lot of action, I think I reached a point where I wondered if I could physically do any more. I'm someone who tries to live brightly, but Jae Kyung is a very dark character psychologically. And since I delved deeply into it, there were times I stayed up all night thinking and researching how to express her. The work and character both had a dark tone, so I tried my best not to let that affect me too much. At that time, I cut off meeting people altogether. Each scene had unexpected difficulties. It was a process of overcoming those hurdles."

Regarding the portrayal of dissociative identity disorder (DID), she shared, "I focused a lot on that aspect and was quite worried. What made it particularly challenging was that Jae Kyung and her brother don't have contrasting personalities; in fact, they share similar traits in the bigger picture. The director wanted the transition to be smooth and natural and without any premonitory signs at the time of the switch, and he instructed that the voice tone not be deliberately lowered. This required me to pay more attention to the details in my expression. I think the most important thing is the eyes and facial expressions. In Jae Kyung's case, she often finds herself in strange situations, but she maintains a calm and indifferent demeanor, so I tried to portray her with a mad glint in her eyes. I thought of her brother as someone who enjoys doing things more and is motivated especially when he's trying to harm someone. Since I couldn't perfectly match the tone of her brother, I tried to raise Jae Kyung's tone by about half a step and express the endings of her sentences a bit differently."

Talking about the moment she felt the best while working on The Tyrant, Jo Yoon Soo said, "Director Park Hoon Jung told me not to check my phone on the premiere day. He even said my phone would be confiscated. He also told me not to read the comments, but I went and read them all anyway." "I read a comment that said, 'Park Hoon Jung, where did you find a kid like that again? You found a good one,' which I interpreted as praise for the casting. That was the comment I wanted to hear the most."

The Tyrant concluded with an open ending, leaving the possibility for a Season 2. Commenting on this, she said, "I have a very good relationship with director Park." "As a fan of The Tyrant, I am looking forward to Season 2. If it happens, I would like to continue maintaining a good relationship with the director and I have the desire to definitely join so that I can share Ja Kyung's story after season 1."
