Good Partner: Episodes 12-13

by quirkycase

This week takes a dark turn with a case that focuses on cruel abuse and the ways wealth and power can drown out a victim’s cries for help. There’s an infuriatingly high bar for proving abuse as a reason for divorce, leaving many victims trapped with no protection. Our lawyer pair find themselves in the eye of the storm when one such abuser is their client and they must decide where their ethical lines lie.

EPISODES 12-13

Buckle up because this week’s episodes are rough. Rather than one case per episode, we get a single intense case that spans both. But before we dive into the new case that occupies our lawyers’ time, we have to catch up with Eun-kyung after Jae-hee’s hospital visit. Yuri comes running to the hospital after Eun-kyung calls her crying on the phone. They both pretend Yuri is providing post-divorce follow up with her client so they can avoid any awkward mushy feelings, but it’s obvious the women are true friends now. Yuri even makes Eun-kyung cry again by telling her that she needs her and hopes they work together forever.

Luckily for everyone, Woo-jin has not become suddenly power hungry despite accepting his heir destiny. He has the equivalent of a debutant’s coming out in society as his father brings him into the rich circle fold, but Woo-jin looks uncomfortable with it all. He’s also uncomfortable with the way his father is pushing Eun-kyung out and makes his opinion known, but there’s nothing he can do at this point.

Yuri, however, is stunned to learn of Eun-kyung’s precarious position in the firm, which the CEO uses to threaten Yuri into taking a VIP case that should by all rights be Eun-kyung’s. He promises Yuri that he will hold off on firing Eun-kyung if she gets a divorce dismissal for the heir to a hospital fortune (the hospital has deep business ties to the law firm). The CEO’s passing over Eun-kyung in favor of her protégé sets the whole office talking.

This is where we take a dark turn. The drama dealt with abuse in a prior episode, but this case is particularly sinister. Smug hospital heir CHUN HWAN-SEO (guest appearance by Kwak Shi-yang) is accused of physical, sexual, and psychological abuse towards his wife YOO JI-YOUNG (Park Ah-in) who has tried to divorce him several times to no avail – he’s rich and powerful enough to have gotten all cases dismissed by erasing any evidence.

Yuri tries to convince herself he might be innocent due to the lack of evidence, but it’s impossible to ignore how Ji-young shrinks away from him in court and can barely even look in his direction. The woman is absolutely terrified. Then, in the court bathroom, she has a panic attack when Yuri turns on the water faucet, convincing Yuri that Ji-young’s accusations that Hwan-seo water tortures her are true.

Of course, Yuri can’t ignore her sinking suspicions and confronts Hwan-seo who has been claiming innocence. He’s so angry at being questioned by a mere lawyer that he demands Eun-kyung take over his case. Eun-kyung keeps Yuri on but takes lead, and it looks like a cut-and-dry dismissal case. But then Ji-young manages to restore a voice file on an old phone. It’s vague enough to be of little use in court, but it makes it clear to everyone in the mediation room that Hwan-seo is guilty. Ji-young quietly sobs and begs the court to save her before Hwan-seo kills her, but there’s little that can be done legally.

The case illustrates how horrifyingly difficult it can be to prove abuse, which makes it impossible for victims to escape no matter how hard they try. Ji-young has brought several suits against him over a span of years and begged for someone to help her, but nothing has changed. Even her parents don’t believe he’s abusing her – he seems careful not to leave obvious marks and gets ahead of the story so it sounds like she’s blowing things out of proportion.

Hwan-seo’s unabashed viciousness is too much for either Yuri or Eun-kyung to stomach. He can’t even keep his cruelty in check professionally and threatens to hurt Eun-kyung and kill Ji-young if the case isn’t dismissed. Eun-kyung would rather be fired than represent this man and takes herself and Yuri off the case. She was smart enough to record his admission of guilt and threats, which she plays for Woo-jin who supports her decision.

Speaking of Woo-jin, Eun-kyung hears about him being the CEO’s son and successor before he tells her, and she’s pissed. They’ve known each other for 14 years, so she feels blindsided and betrayed by his dishonesty. She’s not one to take betrayal lightly, particularly after Ji-sang.

But they have bigger things to worry about when events take an even darker turn after Hwan-seo calls Eun-kyung to his home one night. Thank goodness Yuri insists on following her there because that man is terrifying. Eun-kyung makes Yuri wait outside, expecting something terrible, and her fears are confirmed when she goes inside to find Hwan-seo casually watching his wife dying on the floor after beating her.

When a panicked Eun-kyung tries to call an ambulance – although it’s already too late – he swipes her phone and attacks her for daring to call him a murderer. She barely manages to fight him off and run for her life while Yuri calls the police from outside the gates. Hwan-seo is arrested on the spot, but he vows to kill both Eun-kyung (and Jae-hee) and Yuri before he’s taken away.

20240910035308_ep-11-12-collage1.jpg?s=95 Times Things Got Too Real In Episodes 12-13 Of "Good Partner"

Sep 12, 2024

After the previous episodes, it looked like things were, for the most part, going uphill in “Good Partner.” Or so it seemed.

Although Cha Eun Kyung’s (Jang Nara’s) position as senior divorce attorney is still up in the air, at least her messy divorce got a fairly good resolution. Choi Sa Ra (Han Jae Yi) left town to heal and, more importantly, shouldn’t be causing any more problems for the characters in her absence. Even Eun Kyung’s unlikely friendship with Han Yu Ri (Nam Ji Hyun) has been flourishing.

But last week’s episodes really said sike and threw a terrible client, a change of power at the law firm, and a murder at us, all at once. To catch you up to speed, here are five of the most intense moments from episodes 12-13 of “Good Partner.”

Warning: mentions and images of violence.
Spoilers for episodes 12-13 below.

1. Yu Ri and Eun Kyung are threatened by an abusive husband

Everything starts going downhill when Yu Ri and later Eun Kyung are tasked with defending Chun Hwan Seo (Kwak Si Yang) against his wife’s abuse allegations.

The case already starts with a huge conflict of interest: Hwan Seo happens to be the son of the head of the Chun Medical Foundation, one of the biggest financial supporters of Daejeong Law Firm. So from the very beginning, Yu Ri and Eun Kyung are put in a position of feeling pressured to get a favorable ruling for Hwan Seo, regardless of the allegations.

Hwan Seo’s wife, Yoo Ji Young (Park Ah In)—who gives a stellar performance, by the way—has tried filing for divorce many times before for the same reason, but so far she hasn’t been able to provide any evidence that she is being abused. Hwan Seo, of course, denies everything and says his wife is doing it for settlement money.

But with Yu Ri’s intuition and Eun Kyung’s expertise, it doesn’t take them long to figure out something else is going on here, and Hwan Seo slowly reveals his true personality when the case doesn’t go his way.

Jang Nara And Nam Ji Hyun Unexpectedly Reunite With A Past Client In "Good Partner"

Sep 13, 2024
by S Nam

SBS’s “Good Partner” has unveiled new stills ahead of the upcoming episode!

Written by an actual divorce attorney, “Good Partner” is a drama that depicts the humorous struggles of two very different divorce lawyers: Cha Eun Kyung (Jang Nara), a star lawyer for whom divorce is her calling, and Han Yu Ri (Nam Ji Hyun), a rookie lawyer who is still new to divorce.

Spoilers

In the previous episode, Cha Eun Kyung and Han Yu Ri worked hard to uncover the truth about Chun Hwan Seo (Kwak Si Yang) and the death of Yoo Ji Young (Park Ah In). After solving the case, Cha Eun Kyung decided to leave Daejeong Law Firm and work independently, raising anticipation for her future.

The newly released stills reveal Cha Eun Kyung unexpectedly meeting with client Park Jin Sook (Kim Jung Young). Despite receiving multiple consultations, Park Jin Sook could not readily agree to filing a divorce. However, Park Jin Sook returns and faces Cha Eun Kyung with a relieved smile that makes her appear much more comfortable than before.

In episode 12, I thought the wife was to separate from her husband, how did she end up in the same place? She didn’t have her own lawyer and he had paid money each time she filed for a divorce, so I presumed she had money to hire one. Even a mediocre lawyer is better than none, unless she knows the law.

I have not met any Asian battered women so I cannot say how true her acting was. But I thought she over emoted. Once a battered woman is strong enough to file for a divorce other steps are much easier. Her mind is strong enough to fight him openly. She had tried it many times, so I expected her to be more prepared.

I had been a volunteer before and the way this show presented the woman does not mesh in with her earlier actions or a woman fighting for her life.
It totally spoils my rating of this show.

Battered women or spouses are real victims and should be presented better.

EK is a one woman law firm. I tend to avoid them unless recommended by good friends. She’s still holding on to her principles.

Her office is in a lovely house with a garden but I am not pleased with her struggling with the door lock.
Just call the darn locksmith and replace it. A sharp lawyer would not put up with it because it would reduce their efficiency…. Extra time… time is money. It somehow says that women are bad with metallic/mechanical objects and need a man to fix it. Sure enough when attorney Jung joined her, he got it fixed

I am glad YR realised how much he meant to her. She’s pretty in a girl next door way or maybe her characters are such. In what happened to Father (I think) she was a naive small town girl paired with Park something, cute guy in Hwarang, and I didn’t think it was a good match.

The preview had ex-husband visiting her. I hope that train has left the station. Better to give a devoted guy like Jang - the new CEO.

The ex CEO is asking EK to be his divorce lawyer.

Episode 14 was on September 14. One more episode means September 15 which is today!

Good Partner: Episodes 14-15

by quirkycase

We get a lighter week full of new beginnings for all our lawyers who are making changes in work and life. As some grow ever more confident in their choices, our lovable junior lawyer finds himself questioning his path. Meanwhile, a case full of miscommunication and assumptions brings our lawyer pair back together, albeit this time they sit on opposing sides.

EPISODES 14-15

My wish was granted and we get a breather this week after last week’s excellent yet dark episodes. Everyone is renegotiating their priorities, none more than Eun-kyung who makes good on her word and gives notice. Everyone at the firm is sad to see her go, but she feels lighter as she readies for a new beginning. Yuri is particularly upset to part and begs to go with her, but Eun-kyung encourages her to learn everything she can so they can meet in the future as partners rather than boss and employee.

While Eun-kyung gets her own firm up and running – ensuring it’s within walking distance of their house so she can be more present for Jae-hee – Woo-jin ushers in Daejeong’s new era. Part of that is reevaluating teams, and he surprises Yuri with the option to move to her first choice of corporate law or even a new social (human rights) team he’s creating. But Yuri surprises herself by realizing that she’s already found her niche in divorce law, helping people find happiness.

For someone used to a case load in the dozens, Eun-kyung struggles to figure out how to fill her time in a new firm without established clients. Even so, she sends her first client Yuri’s way: the woman Yuri so desperately hoped would divorce her drunken, abusive husband but who wasn’t ready to leave.

But never fear because Yuri is looking out for Eun-kyung too and sends her potential client Eun-kyung’s way. I love that not only do they want to support each other’s careers, but they understand each other’s strengths so well. Yuri knew the client needed Eun-kyung’s keen negotiation skills, and Eun-kyung knew their repeat client needed Yuri’s caring, dogged approach to help her finally divorce her abusive husband.

With her own firm, Eun-kyung is noticeably more carefree and comfortable, seeming to find joy in her job again and consequently taking a warmer and more relaxed approach to her clients. When she’s not forcing herself to be cold, she’s much more similar to Yuri than they appear at first glance, something Woo-jin has been saying since the beginning. Her more honest, transparent self is not lost on Jae-hee who is a fan of this more approachable version of her mom.

The women may no longer work together, but you’d barely know it given how often Yuri pops by to see Eun-kyung. But now she buys Eun-kyung dinner as the higher earner in the relationship. Working separately has already put them more on equal footing, and it’s nice to see them growing closer as friends without a professional barrier between them.

Yuri treating Eun-kyung to meals isn’t the only new dynamic in their relationship – they find themselves on opposite sides of a case when they each unknowingly take on a spouse in a divorce suit. This time, it’s a mismatch of libido between a couple causing their woes. The wife argues her husband never wants to do it whereas he swears she has an addiction. Both claim the other needs treatment and have saved voice files supporting their claims.

As usual, though, there’s more under the surface. They’ve been struggling to have a baby due to the wife’s PCOS, and the stress has impacted them both. She thinks her husband blames her for their inability to have kids, never realizing that he’s worried about the expenses of having a baby and has been avoiding her.

Eun-kyung and Yuri’s closeness proves an asset in this case as they both catch onto the couple’s underlying issue and work together to find a reasonable solution. They have the couple talk it out to resolve their misunderstandings. The couple goes through with the divorce due to differing desires on having kids, but they reach an amicable settlement.
