20240925053908_the-judge-from-hell_e7892Watch: Park Shin Hye, Kim Jae Young, And More Discuss Their Characters In New "The Judge From Hell" Making-Of Video

Sep 25, 2024
by E Ezeji

SBS has treated viewers to an exciting peek behind the scenes of “The Judge from Hell,” with the cast sharing their experiences on set and giving insight into their characters!

“The Judge from Hell” is a new fantasy romance drama starring Park Shin Hye as Kang Bit Na, a demon from hell who has entered the body of a judge. After meeting the compassionate detective Han Da On (Kim Jae Young), who works hard at his job in a reality harsher than hell, Kang Bit Na embarks on a journey to becoming a true judge.

Park Shin Hye kicks off the behind-the-scenes video by introducing her character Justitia, a demon from hell who takes over the body of Kang Bit Na, a human judge. The video then cuts to the filming of a scene in which Justitia, now in Bit Na’s body, boldly declares her demonic identity in front of medical staff. Park Shin Hye confesses that she was initially worried about how viewers would interpret the scene and how her performance would be received, but credits the director for reassuring her that the scene would turn out well.

Next, actor Kim Jae Young, who plays Han Da On, reflects on his first day of filming. He expresses satisfaction with how smoothly things went, attributing much of his comfort on set to Park Shin Hye, who took great care of him during the shoot.

Kim In Kwon, who portrays Goo Man Do, adds a lighthearted touch by humorously describing his character assisting Judge Bit Na on a shopping spree. He also expresses his joy at reuniting with Park Shin Hye 15 years after they starred together in “You’re Beautiful.”

The video also features actress Kim Ah Young, who plays Lee Ah Rong, discussing her first scene in the drama, which was filmed at a restaurant. Kim Ah Young reveals that she was initially nervous but found comfort in working with her senior actors and the director, which allowed her to settle into her role.

The making-of video concludes with the cast expressing their hopes for the drama’s success and encouraging viewers to tune in. Park Shin Hye in particular shares her excitement about playing a more dynamic and powerful character than what fans are accustomed to seeing from her.

Park Shin-hye, renowned for her romantic comedy roles, is surprising fans with a villainous role in the SBS series, "The Judge from Hell," departing from her typical sweet image and making her first foray into portraying an inherently evil character.

The series features Park Shin-hye as Kang Bit-na, a fallen devil who inhabits the body of a human judge. On a mission to send 10 unrepentant sinners to hell to earn her return, Bit-na initially issues lenient sentences to those who are morally culpable. However, she later administers her own, much harsher penalties.

"The script was so fun to read and scenes unfolded in my head as I read. I was more curious about the audience's reaction (to the drama) than about transforming my acting," the 34-year-old actor shared her excitement about the project during a press conference at SBS headquarters in Yangcheon District, Seoul, Thursday.

She added, "'I've always enjoyed my previous roles, but this one offered a unique opportunity to explore different facets of my personality. The Bit-na character felt multifaceted and I was eager to bring my accumulated experience to this role."

In a teaser, Kang Bit-na embodies the principle of "an eye for an eye" by ruthlessly attacking a suspect and smiling with a bloodied knife, leaving viewers questioning whether she is a hero or a villain. As she carries out her dark mission, she encounters a passionate detective, Han Da-on (Kim Jae-yeong), and her seemingly flawless scheme starts to unravel.

When asked about her first villainous role, Park delved into the moral ambiguity of her character, highlighting the complexities of her new part.

"The villains we usually think of harm others or commit serious crimes against society. Rather than a villain, Bit-na is more like a devil — a playful, manipulative being that enjoys twisting situations. She's more like a mischievous imp than a villain," she said.

Director Park Jin-pyo, known for his investigative journalism work on SBS’ “Unanswered Questions” and directing films such as "Voice of a Murderer" (2007) and "Brave Citizen" (2023), introduces a new perspective to the legal drama genre.

While set in a courtroom, the series explores a fantasy realm where the laws of hell and the "an eye for an eye" philosophy are central, distinguishing it from other legal dramas.

Park describes the drama as a dramatic reinterpretation of the ancient Code of Hammurabi, emphasizing themes of retribution and justice.

"Within that, we focused on the victims and their families who have had their entire lives taken away. Rather than being a typical legal drama, I hope viewers will watch it as a fantasy action drama where good and evil coexist and find the series to be cathartic," he said.

"Judge from the Hell" will premiere Friday at 10 p.m.

Thank you for the recommendation friend. What's this drama about?

It's about demon that pocesses a human judge that must punish 10 murderers on the Earth and send them to hell. Imagine if Lucifur was a K-drama, but instead of played by a British man, it's played by a Korean woman.

The truth behind Kim Jae-young's death is revealed.

Episodes 1 and 2 of the SBS Friday-Saturday drama 'Judge from Hell' (written by Jo Yi-soo/directed by Park Jin-pyo/produced by Studio S) aired back-to-back on September 21. 'Judge from Hell' led viewers into extreme immersion for 2 hours with Park Shin-hye's (as Kang Bit-na) shocking transformation, Kim Jae-young's (as Han Da-on) unique charm, and a heart-pounding story.

Episode 2 recorded a viewership rating of 9.8% in the metropolitan area and a peak viewership rating of 10.4%, a vertical increase from Episode 1. The 2049 viewership rating also recorded 3%, taking first place among all Saturday programs and miniseries.

Among them, the ending of Episode 2, where female lead Kang Bit-na stabs male lead Han Da-on with a weapon, is said to have had a strong impact. In episode 2, Kang Bit-na heard from Han Da-on while drunk that she had killed three people in the past and tried to execute him and send him to hell. Han Da-on did not know that Kang Bit-na was actually a demon. Han Da-on, who was attacked while defenseless, ended up falling to the floor bleeding profusely.

The production team of 'Judge from Hell' said, "I think the focused acting of the two actors Park Shin-hye and Kim Jae-young increased the impact of the ending of episode 2. You can see whether Han Da-on dies or not in episode 3, which will air tomorrow (the 27th). This will have a big impact on Kang Bit-na's way of executing criminals in the future. We ask for your interest and anticipation."

Episode 3 of 'Judge from Hell' will air on the 27th at 10 p.m.

According to her agency, Anick Entertainment, on the 26th, Park Ji-yeon will appear in the SBS Friday-Saturday drama 'Judge from Hell' (written by Jo Yi-soo, directed by Park Jin-pyo, produced by Studio S) as Yoo Jeong-im, a single mom and tenant of Hwangcheon Villa 102.

'Judge from Hell' is an action fantasy about good and evil coexisting in which Kang Bit-na (Park Shin-hye), a demon who enters the body of a judge, meets the humane and passionate detective Han Da-on (Kim Jae-young) in a hellish reality and is reborn as a true judge by punishing criminals.

Park Ji-yeon, who previously played the role of Choi Hyun-seo, a mother in the midst of a divorce lawsuit in the SBS drama 'Good Partner' and formed empathy by showing stable acting, will add strength to the story of the people of Hwangcheon Villa in 'Judge from Hell' as a polite mother who works at a noodle restaurant and raises her son Min-jun alone.

Actress Park Shin-hye confessed her desire to play a 'villain' in an interview conducted prior to the release of director Cho Il-hyung's film '#Alive' in 2020. She added that any genre or character is fine. Almost 4 years later, her wish is becoming a reality. A bloody wind that seems to not go well with Park Shin-hye is blowing in the living room theater. Park Shin-hye's appearance with her eyes turning purple and smiling. It is definitely unfamiliar.
Park Shin-hye returned to SBS's Friday-Saturday drama 'Judge from Hell', the first and second episodes of which aired simultaneously on the 21st. 'Judge from Hell', which attracted attention as the first drama directed by director Park Jin-pyo, who directed 'You Are My Destiny', 'My Love by My Side', and 'Voice of a Dude', has a fantasy setting. It is the story of the devil Justitia, who judged sinners as a judge in hell, making a mistake and coming down to the human world to inhabit the body of judge Kang Bit-na, who just happened to lose her life.

Justitia is tasked with sending 10 criminals to hell in Kang Bit-na's body, and must succeed in doing so in order to return to hell. Kang Bit-na actively uses the judge's situation to reduce the sentences of outrageous criminals with various sophistry, or acquits them and releases them into society. Then, she visits them without anyone knowing and starts a banquet to execute them and send their souls to hel

0000008815_002_20240926142218164.jpg?typ

In this process, various demon colleagues help him, and detective Han Da-on (Kim Jae-young) who suspects Judge Kang Bit-na, who has a warm humanity as a human detective but makes incomprehensible judgments, gets involved and follows her and learns the truth. Kang Bit-na, who has become a demon judge, begins to feel inexplicable feelings for Han Da-on, and eventually enters a realm of humanity that she has never felt before and a fight with Kang Bit-na's former in-laws who become her true enemies.

'Judge from Hell' stands out with its department store-like composition that condenses the charms of various popular genres at a glance. Demon judge Kang Bit-na herself is a typical 'dark hero' who has recently been in the spotlight with various movies such as 'Deadpool' and 'Joker', and it also has the characteristics of a courtroom drama that can show solid cohesion as a genre. In addition, you can enjoy the atmosphere of comedy sprinkled like seasoning, the atmosphere of fantasy seen in various CGs and settings, and dazzling action.

Park Shin-hye played a big role in director Park Jin-pyo being able to prepare such a feast of genres. Park Shin-hye, who debuted in 2003 and has 21 years of acting experience, has reached a certain level with 'The Judge from Hell'. She can do romance, comedy, fantasy, and action. Her career to date proves this.

0000008815_003_20240926142218210.jpg?typ

There, the devil's characteristic evil aura was wrapped around her. Park Shin-hye, who had hoped for a villain role, is alive and well throughout the drama. In particular, you can feel that kind of atmosphere in the already aired 2nd episode, which was the scene where Moon Jung-joon (Jang Do-ha), who committed dating violence and showed the appearance of a psychopath, was executed.

The victim Cha Min-jung (Park Jung-yeon) and her family despaired at Moon Jung-joon's case, which Kang Bit-na decided to punish first and released with a fine. Moon Jung-joon does not stop his violence, and is eventually summoned to the net set by Kang Bit-na. Kang Bit-na receives the punishment of an 'eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth', just like the situation in the ancient 'Code of Hammurabi', where she receives the same amount of evil she has done to the other person.

At this time, Kang Bit-na plays the role of a girlfriend who returns the pain to Moon Jung-joon, and she shows a short transition from a sweet appearance to a brutal appearance. The screams of Jang Do-ha breaking his fingers and breaking his ankles are transmitted as they are. Also, Park Shin-hye doesn't stop laughing even in the blood-splattering assault scene. Park Shin-hye, who is in a situation she's never been in before and plays a role she's never played before, is not the Park Shin-hye we knew until now.

0000008815_004_20240926142218252.jpg?typ
Park Shin-hye started her career as a child in 'Stairway to Heaven' and has played difficult but strong and determined characters in works such as 'You're Beautiful', 'You're in Love with Me', 'The Heirs', and 'Pinocchio'. In particular, as 'The Heirs' gained great popularity, Cha Eun-sang's 'Candy' image became Park Shin-hye's image. Although she tried to add a rough image in works such as 'Call' and 'Sisyphus', this did not reach the level of diversification of her image.

In the end, 'Judge from Hell' appropriately mixes the Park Shin-hye we know with the Park Shin-hye we don't know, and naturally leads viewers to the 'third path' she takes. Naturally, the viewership ratings rose to over 10% at one point, and it is showing its power surpassing the initial performance of 'Good Partner', which was a previous work but was also popular.

Transformation is a destiny and homework for all actors. Each actor has a thousand different sides of themselves in their hearts, although they may not be able to show them for various reasons. However, bringing them to life when the opportunity comes is a separate matter. Park Shin-hye's appearance as Kang Bit-na shows that she can also be a devil of the underworld who exudes a cold aura, in addition to the lively and cute appearances we already know. This was possible because she did not leave her thirst for transformation as an idea, but prepared in advance so that she could become a character that fits it.

How will Park Shin-hye remember the year 2024 in the distant future? For the young actor who still has a long way to go, 'Kang Bit-na' and 'Judge from Hell' may become a history that proves that the stirring energy of change has come to him and the viewers.
