MBC's upcoming Friday-Saturday drama Bittersweet Hell has unveiled its teaser.

Bittersweet Hell is a black comedy that tells the story of Noh Young Won, a renowned family counselor, who is threatened by an unknown blackmailer. This leads her to collaborate with her mother-in-law, a mystery novel writer, to protect her family.

The teaser commences with solemn music. Noh Young Won (Kim Hee Sun) and Hong Sa Gang (Lee Hye Young) are standing at a gravesite. A voiceover asks, "Do you know everything? About your family?"

Choi Jae Jin (Kim Nam Hee) is shown earnestly praying. A suspicious text message reads, "Does Dr. Noh Young Won know everything about her husband?"

Scenes of Noh Young Won opening a safe, her family photo, a woman playing with a lighter, drops of blood on glasses, and a car being pulled out of the sea intensify the suspense.

The teaser then shows Choi Jae Jin smiling brightly and hugging his wife, Noh Young Won, followed by  No Young Won sitting with a dark expression in her counseling room.

Then intriguing scenes of Hong Sa Gang performing a bizarre dance and Choi Jae Jin shivering in fear while wiping blood from his medical scrub follow.

Towards the teaser's conclusion, Hong Sa Gang says, "You still don't understand? We've fallen into a trap."

Bittersweet Hell will premiere on May 24.

20240503025730_Kim-Nam-Hee.jpg?s=900x600Kim Nam Hee Is Kim Hee Sun's Seemingly Perfect Husband In "Bitter Sweet Hell"

May 03, 2024

MBC’s upcoming drama “Bitter Sweet Hell” has shared a new sneak peek of Kim Nam Hee in character!

“Bitter Sweet Hell” is a black comedy starring Kim Hee Sun as Noh Young Won, the top family psychiatrist in all of Korea. When an anonymous blackmailer puts her career and family at risk, Noh Young Won teams up with her mother-in-law Hong Sa Gang (Lee Hye Young), a mystery novelist, to protect their family.

Kim Nam Hee will star in the drama as Noh Young Won’s husband Choi Jae Jin, a renowned surgeon who lives in his wife’s shadow. Although he leads a successful life as the top reconstructive plastic surgeon in Korea, he has never had the chance to pursue his own desires and live his life while making his own choices.

After years of diligently following the path that his devoted mother Hong Sa Gang had planned for him, Choi Jae Jin thought that he would be able to escape his mother’s world by marrying Noh Young Won. However, he merely wound up living in Noh Young Won’s world instead. Choi Jae Jin also struggles to pull off the balancing act of being a good son to Hong Sa Gang, a good husband to Noh Young Won, and the only confidant of his teenage son all at once.

Newly released stills from the upcoming drama also hint at the unexpected struggles that the seemingly perfect Choi Jae Jin is hiding. The first photo shows Choi Jae Jin giving his acceptance speech after receiving a “Doctor of the Year” award—but the next captures him looking troubled as he stands in front of the mirror in the operating room, clearly having a difficult time due to a surgery.

However, when he’s with his family, Choi Jae Jin is all smiles, putting on a happy face and pretending to be worry-free.

Kim Hee-sun and Lee Hye-young fall into a Bittersweet Hell

by tccolb

An eerie first teaser has landed for MBC’s black comedy and thriller Bittersweet Hell, where Kim Hee-sun (Remarriage & Desires) and Lee Hye-young’s (Big Bet) presumed perfect life is revealed to be a little less rosy than it seems.

Setting the uneasy mood from the start, we open the teaser at a cemetery where crime novelist Hong Sa-kang (Lee Hye-young) raises a glass to the deceased. Daughter-in-law Noh Young-won (Kim Hee-sun) just stands in silence, thinking back on Yeonwoo’s (Numbers) unsettling question: “Do you know everything? About your family?”

As a family psychologist, Young-won gives a fair and trusting response, “Is it necessary to know everything about each other, in order to be family?” Unfortunately, the sequence involving Young-won’s husband Kim Nam-hee (Chicken Nugget) is not very reassuring. He also seems to be number two on the hit list, while his and Young-won’s son Jaechan (Semantic Error) is number four.

Naturally, Young-won is distressed to have herself and her family under threat. But I’m not sure what to think of mother-in-law Sa-kang dancing as if in a trance, whose scene is curiously intercut with the ~mysterious~ Lee Se-na (Yeonwoo). Sa-kang, though, is quick to assess the situation, saying to Young-won, “Don’t you see? We’ve been sunk into a trap.”

But with Sa-kang as number three and Young-won number five, they’ll need to race against the clock if they want to survive with their whole family intact. The teaser then closes as Young-won is brought to the snowy woods and upon her discovery of something there, we end on her realization that, “It was all a lie.”

Written by Nam Ji-yeon (So I Married an Anti-fan) with PD Lee Do-hyun (Doctor Lawyer, She Knows Everything) and PD Wie Deuk-kyu (Mobius: The Veil) co-directing, MBC’s Bittersweet Hell will be premiering this month on May 24.

Kim Hee-sun’s perfect life crumbles into a Bittersweet Hell

by lovepark

8f3288c8-3217-4cfc-8e52-4d92942d3dac.jpg

MBC’s upcoming black comedy and thriller Bittersweet Hell released character posters of its leads looking eerie and out of focus. The show stars Kim Hee-sun (Remarriage & Desires) and Lee Hye-young (Big Bet) as a daughter and mother-in-law pair hoping to keep their family safe in the face of a mysterious danger.

Kim Hee-sun plays celebrity family psychologist Noh Young-won who has the perfect life. Her career is flourishing, her family is wonderful, and everything seems to be going her way — until something (or someone) threatens to ruin it all. Capturing the warring emotions within, Young-won’s poster depicts her looking shocked, then determined, and finally at a loss. Her tagline reads, “Is it necessary to know everything about each other, in order to be family?”

Playing famed crime novelist and Young-won’s mother-in-law Hong Sa-kang is Lee Hye-young. A prickly woman who has devoted her life to crafting the model family, she will do anything for her son. However, even the meticulous Sa-kang seems fallible as her poster reveals the conflicting feelings hidden behind her resolute mask. Her tagline says, “Family shouldn’t be suspicious of each other?”

Stepping into the role of husband and son Choi Jae-jin is Kim Nam-hee (Chicken Nugget). Though a famous plastic surgeon in his own right, Jae-jin has never once lived for himself, and from his poster, I get the vibe that he feels trapped between two powerful women. His expressions range from downcast to giddy, and the contrast is heightened by his tagline, “I refuse to live as the fake Choi Jae-jin.”

Finally, Yeonwoo (Numbers) rounds out the cast as the enigmatic Lee Se-na. From an innocent girl to a femme fatale, Se-na has many faces and carries a secret with her. Her presence may bring disaster to Young-won’s peaceful life as her tagline reads, “Do you know everything? About your family?”

Co-directed by PDs Lee Dong-hyun (Doctor Lawyer, She Knows Everything) and Wie Deuk-kyu (Mobius: The Veil) with scripts by Nam Ji-yeon (So I Married an Anti-fan), MBC’s Bittersweet Hell premieres May 24 in the Friday-Saturday slot and is slated for twelve episodes.

DKZ’s Jaechan has dished on his upcoming MBC drama “Bitter Sweet Hell”!

Jaechan will play the role of Choi Do Hyun, the teenage son of Noh Young Won and her husband Choi Jae Jin (Kim Nam Hee). An overachiever with good looks, good grades, and good manners, Choi Do Hyun is impressively mature for his age and faithfully manages to pull off the rigorous schedule his mother has decided for him.

However, when this seemingly perfect son winds up with a secret he can’t tell his family, he makes up his mind to leave home in order to hide it.

Jaechan.jpeg

Jaechan revealed that he himself became so engrossed in the story of “Bitter Sweet Hell” that he always looked forward to receiving his next script.

“Whenever I received a new script, it was always so interesting and fun to read,” he recalled. “To the extent where after I finished reading a script for one episode, I would always wait eagerly for the next script to arrive.”

As for his approach to the role of Choi Do Hyun, Jaechan remarked, “It seemed like he’s more honest and genuine than you’d expect, and he has a simple and straightforward personality. So while I was acting, I tried not to overthink or complicate things.”

“When faced with a given situation, I spent the most time pondering, ‘What kind of expression would Do Hyun make here, and what kind of tone of speech or actions would he use to get through this situation?’” he continued. “Because I gave my all while acting, I’m really looking forward to seeing [the drama], so I want to watch it as quickly as possible.”

Jaechan-2.jpeg

As Jaechan is now in his twenties, he noted with a laugh, “After putting on a school uniform for the first time in a long while and looking in the mirror, I was relieved because I thought, ‘Fortunately, I might still be able to pass for a high school student.’”

In terms how he prepared for his role from a styling standpoint, Jaechan shared, “Because Do Hyun is a model student, I kept my appearance neat and clean-cut while filming, without loosening my uniform necktie or undoing any of my jacket or vest buttons. I also tried to keep my hairstyle neat.”

Jaechan-4.jpeg

Finally, Jaechan couldn’t say enough good things about his experience working with his famous co-stars.

“I was [initially] very nervous at the thought that I’d be able to work together with such famous senior actors,” he said, “but everyone was so warm and took such good care of me, so I was very grateful.”

Jaechan went on to give specific examples, recalling, “Kim Hee Sun gave me chocolate as a gift, which I posted about on social media. At [the cast] dinner after our first script reading, Kim Nam Hee called me ‘son’ and took care of me. After I rapped for Lee Hye Young, I don’t know if she practiced it, but she later rapped it back to me. It was a truly special and precious moment for which I was very grateful.”
