The Bequeathed: Kim Hyun-joo, Park Hee-soon, and Others in Netflix’s Upcoming Thriller Series

by Riya Sing

Netflix has announced the cast for its upcoming thriller Kdrama The Bequeathed and we are excited after looking at the star cast who are all set to bring us an intriguing plot to keep us hooked very soon. The show is directed Min Hong-nam. and written by Yeon Sang-ho who had once given us a marvellous creation with Train to Busan.

The cast announced for the upcoming drama includes Kim Hyun-joo in the role of Yoon Seo-ha, Park Hee-soon as Choi Sung-joon, Park Byung-eun as Park Sang-min and Ryu Kyung-soo as Kim Young-ho.

The plot revolves around Yoon Seo-ha who inherits a family gravesite from her uncle and soon gets involved in a series of inauspicious incidents. Throwing a surprise step-brother Kim Young-ho into the mix creates more confusion for her as her days continue to get messier as her family’s history unravels.

On the other hand, detective Choi Sung-joon is investigating recent incidents and thinks that they have something to do with Yoon Seo-ha’s family gravesite. While having an antagonistic relationship with his superior Park Sang-min due to a past case, the two are thrown into this investigation that will change everyone’s lives forever.

The revelations and thrills that the characters are to experience while investigating this family gravesite, what surprises will the show bring to keep us hooked?

The cast announcement brings with it an intriguing plot that has really made us look forward to its release. However, no official date has been set for the release of The Bequeathed. All that we know for now is that this Netflix series is set to release in 2023 and with just two months to go for the new year, the wait wouldn’t be long.

Everything we know so far about Netflix K-Drama The Bequeathed Season 1

The-Bequeathed.jpg?resize=750,375&ssl=1

Yeon Sang Ho, the creator of Train to Busan, will begin work on The Bequeathed, the next zombie horror South Korean drama, for his third Netflix Original series. We’ll be monitoring all the information you require on The Bequeathed’s debut season, such as the storyline, cast news, production updates, and the Netflix release date. The project’s former name, Family Gravesite, has been changed to The Bequeathed. Yeon Sang Ho, the mind behind Hellbound and the Train to Busan franchise, is the writer and director of the upcoming South Korean Netflix Original horror series The Bequeathed.

There are very little story specifics for The Bequeathed, and Han Cinema has only provided a brief synopsis:
a piece of art that shows locals transforming into zombies with unidentified ailments.
It is unknown what kind of zombies will appear in the Korean drama. Given that Yeon Sang Ho, the writer and director of the acclaimed Train to Busan, is in charge of the series, we fully anticipate seeing the incredibly quick flesh-eating monsters.

We might all be excused for thinking that The Bequeathed might be a sequel to Train to Busan because it has zombies and Yeon Sang Ho once more. So far, nothing has been verified. However, from a marketing standpoint, it would generate a lot of interest if Netflix promoted the show as a sequel or prequel to Train to Busan. We’re currently awaiting more information from Netflix.

The Bequeathed has cast Kim Hyun Joo in a lead role, but the character’s identity hasn’t been made public yet. Her work on Netflix will be well-known to subscribers because she previously starred in the film Hellbound. Fans of K-dramas, and particularly those of Kim Hyun Joo, may anticipate seeing more of her on Netflix in 2023 with the debut of After appearing in A Model Family and My Name, Jung E. Park Hee Soon has been cast in an unidentified lead role in the Korean drama. This will be his third Netflix Original series overall. There have been only two cast members announced thus far, but more information should be forthcoming.

Along with the production upgrade, the title was modified. The series, which was formerly known as Family Gravesite, is now known as The Bequeathed. Previously, we believed that The Bequeathed’s development would start with the release of Yeon Sang Oh’s live-action Korean translation of Parasyte, named Parasyte: The Grey. The Bequeathed, on the other hand, seems to be getting development priority.
Although Netflix has not yet announced a release date, we anticipate the series will be available on the service in 2024.

Netflix is staying in the Yeon Sang-ho business, confirming production on his latest creation, The Bequeathed. A suspense drama, it weaves an intricate family history into a subject matter deeply rooted in Korean tradition: family burial grounds.

Hellbound creator and Train to Busan and Peninsula filmmaker Yeon also recently set horror series Parasyte: The Grey at Netflix. For The Bequeathed, he will serve as creator and writer. Min Hong-nam, who has worked closely with Yeon as an Assistant Director on Train to Busan, Psychokinesis and Peninsula, will take on helming duties.

The Bequeathed centers on Kim Hyun-joo’s Yun Seo-ha, a young woman who inherits family land upon the sudden death of her uncle and finds herself mired in strange events that unravel deeply buried family troubles. Kim’s credits include Hellbound, Undercover and Watcher.

Park Byung-eun (Kingdom, Eve, Lost) is Choi’s younger colleague and the squad chief who is gripped by envy and a feeling of inferiority owing to an incident from the past involving Choi.

Ryu Kyung-soo (Glitch, Hellbound, Broker) plays Seo-ha’s younger half-brother Kim Yeong-ho who gives her plenty to contend with.

There’s no word on timing as yet, though Netflix will release globally. The Bequeathed is produced by Wow Point and RedPeter Films (Peninsula, Another Child, Psychokinesis, Train to Busan)

Netflix has announced the production of its new original series The Bequeathed, another project of Yeon Sang Ho universe.

The Bequeathed begins when the lead character inherits all the fortune of her uncle that she’s forgotten about. The show follows a series of ominous events as the secret of a family is revealed.

Director Yeon Sang Ho, best known for Train to Busan and Hellbound, took part in the production as a producer and a scriptwriter. He’ll connect the very Korean concept of “a mountain with a family’s gravesite” with the story of a family. The Bequeathed is helmed by Director Min Hong Nam, who acted as Yeon’s assistant director in Train to Busan and Peninsula.

On the 18th, Netflix announced the finalized cast of The BequeathedKim Hyun Joo, Park Hee Soon, Park Byung Eun, and Ryu Kyung Soo. Kim Hyun Joo steps into the role of Yoon Seo Ha, who gets swept up in mysterious cases after inheriting the mountain with the family’s gravesite. This is her second time starring in Yeon’s project, following Hellbound. Joining her in the cast is My Name star Park Hee Soon. He’ll play the role of detective Choi Sung Joon, who’s got a gut feeling that a series of events in the village is related to inheritance.

Then there is Eve actor Park Byung Eun joining the series as Park Sang Min, Choi Sung Joon’s younger boss. He’s a jealous man who holds animosity towards Park Sang Min due to a case from the past. Lastly, Itaewon Class actor Ryu Kyung Soo takes on the role of Kim Young Ho, Seo Ha’s half-brother. He appears out of nowhere, throwing Seo Ha into a world of chaos.

Kim Hyun-joo inherits a grave in The Bequeathed

by solstices

Promotional materials are out for Netflix’s upcoming thriller The Bequeathed, teasing a harrowing tale and featuring a Trolley reunion between our leads Kim Hyun-joo and Park Hee-soon. At just six episodes, I’m anticipating brisk pacing and a tightly-woven mystery, because the teaser already has my heart in my throat.

When her uncle’s passing bequeaths her an ancestral grave, Yoon Seo-ha (Kim Hyun-joo) finds herself plagued by ominous occurrences. First, it seems an autopsy has been performed on her uncle. Then, she’s accosted at her uncle’s funeral by a scruffy man claiming to be her half-brother.

He’s Kim Young-ho — played by Ryu Kyung-soo (Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938) — and he’s come to stake his claim to the inheritance. What Young-ho wants out of the family burial site isn’t yet clear, but given his penchant for burning talismans, he’s likely harboring ulterior motives that may cross over into the realm beyond.

Meanwhile, the detective Choi Sung-joon (Park Hee-soon) has cottoned on to the suspicious incidents surrounding the ancestral grave and the village it’s located in. If the bloody body being dragged through a field is anything to go by, people are dying, and the trails lead back to none other than the burial site.

Hyun-joo and Young-ho are in danger, since their proximity to the ancestral grave means it may just claim them next. If Sung-joon wants to investigate further, though, he’ll first need to contend with his jealous team leader Park Sang-min — played by Park Byung-eun (Moving) — who harbors an inferiority complex towards him due to a past case.

In addition, that brief glimpse of Kim Jae-beom (Shadow Detective) wearing an eerily gleeful grin is stoking my excitement, especially given his chillingly compelling performance in Under the Queen’s Umbrella. It seems he may have something to do with that blood-streaked door, and I’m eager to find out what ties he has to the burial site. Do these macabre phenomena have a paranormal origin, or are they the product of human desires? What secrets lie buried beneath the grave?

Helmed by PD Min Hong-nam (Peninsula) with scripts written by Yeon Sang-ho (Monstrous, Hellbound), The Bequeathed is slated for a January 19 release on Netflix.

Train to Busan director Yeon Sang Ho commented about his upcoming Netflix dramas The BequeathedHellbound Season 2, and Parasyte: The Grey

The Bequeathed tells the story of Yoon Seo Ha (Kim Hyun Joo), who inherits the family's gravesite from her late uncle. From then on, she experiences mysterious incidents, all of which revolve around the gravesite.

Writer and director Yeon Sang Ho was in charge of planning and writing, and director Min Hong Nam, who collaborated with director Yeon Sang Ho as an assistant director in Train to BusanPsychokinesis, and Peninsula, helmed the K-drama.

Commenting on The Bequeathed, director Yeon said that the conflicts among families surrounding inheritance is a familiar topic, and it can be a bit cliché. So, while writing the script, he went one step further than the stories people already knew and pondered what would make the K-drama unique.

Bdxe81_2f.png

He said, "I thought about what setting could express the duality of a family in an extreme way."

The latter part of The Bequeathed includes a somewhat shocking twist. However, it doesn't end with just the twist. The real message of the work comes after the twist is revealed.

Director Yeon Sang Ho said, "I believe a good work [production] should be able to pose good questions." "The protagonist's line at the end is both a question and a message that The Bequeathed delivers. After everything is revealed, the perspective on the characters changes."

Director Yeon Sang Ho's next project is Parasyte: The Grey, starring Jeon So NeeKoo Kyo Hwan, and Lee Jung HyunParasyte: The Grey is a Netflix series that portrays a conflict between humans and unknown parasites that fall from space, take humans as hosts, and create their own forces using humans as hosts and commit murder. It is based on a Japanese manga series Kiseijuu by Iwaaki Hitoshi.

Director Yeon Sang Ho stated, "It is a completely new story with only the setting of parasites taken. While the original manga dealt with events in Japan, Parasyte: The Grey sets the premise that parasites have also fallen in Korea. I tried to express the original work's theme sincerely."

Talking about Hellbound Season 2, director Yeon Sang Ho expressed, "We are currently working on the second half of Hellbound Season 2, and I think it will be possible to release it around the second half of this year." He also said, "I am really looking forward to it a lot." "Moon Geun YoungKim Sung CheolIm Sung Jaeand Kim Shin Rok all did their best in this work. They are amazing actors."

The Bequeathed will be released on January 19 exclusively on Netflix.

Premiere Watch: The Bequeathed

by missvictrix

17815d8fd280be.jpg

Time slot: Friday (single drop)
Broadcaster: Netflix
Genre: Mystery, suspense, thriller, occult, crime
Episode count: 6

Reasons to watch: Netflix snuck up on us with this one — another dark tale featuring Kim Hyun-joo as a rattled heroine. This time, she’s going along with the current dramaland trend of inheriting dangerous things from your uncle, but in this case it’s a family gravesite that’s deeply entangled with local crime and creepy secrets. While the cast is great here (Park Hee-soon, Ryu Kyung-soo, Park Byung-eun) and the production looks top-notch, occult killings are not my thing, so even the Trolley reunion isn’t enough to lure me in.

TL;DR: Kim Hyun-joo inherits a family gravesite and things get creepy fast

The Bequeathed: Episodes 1-2 (First Impressions)

by solstices

Hauntingly subtle, poignantly evocative, and strangely unsettling, The Bequeathed is off to a strong start. It moves with the steady assurance of a narrative that knows what tale it wants to tell, and if I hadn’t already been drawn in by its achingly complex characters, I’d have been convinced by the compelling deftness of its storytelling.

Editor’s note: This is an opening review only. For a place to chat about the entire drama, visit the Drama Hangout.

EPISODES 1-2

At the crack of dawn, on a desolate country road, an elderly man ambles past an open field with a bottle of makgeolli in hand. The silence is peaceful, as early mornings are wont to be, until it turns eerily ominous. With only a scarecrow and the distant mountains to bear witness, the man begins to foam at the mouth. As a shaman proceeds with her ritual — elsewhere, and seemingly at a different time — the dying man desperately reaches out for help that will not come.

It’s an opening scene that aptly encapsulates the disquieting atmosphere of this drama. Underscored by a soundtrack that alternates between placid tranquility and discordant dissonance, The Bequeathed toes the line between the ordinary and the bizarre. Everything is all right, until it isn’t. Characters act in ways that are just short of normal, yet not entirely inscrutable, and you’re left on tenterhooks waiting for the other shoe to drop. It’s the type of suspense that haunts you with the barely perceptible possibilities of what lies between the lines.

After that sinister overture, we’re taken back to the mundane. YOON SEO-HA (Kim Hyun-joo) is a contract teacher diligently working towards a full-time professor position, and when the detective agency she’d commissioned sends her photos of her cheating husband YANG JAE-SEOK (Park Sung-hoon) and his mistress, Seo-ha’s unperturbed demeanor suggests this is old news to her.

She isn’t given the time to ruminate upon it, though. Her phone rings with a call from the police, informing her that her uncle — the man from our opening scene — is dead. Seo-ha’s bewildered by this sudden turn of events, because she hadn’t known of her uncle’s existence in the least. For one, her father had abandoned her when she was just seven years old. To Jae-seok’s relief, Uncle doesn’t owe any debt, but he’s left behind an inheritance of an ancestral burial ground that now belongs to Seo-ha.

It only gets stranger from there, because Seo-ha is stopped outside the morgue by an unfamiliar man. Claiming to be the village chief YOOK SUNG-SOO, he informs Seo-ha that he’s already organized Uncle’s funeral, since the whole village adored him. There’s something deeply unsettling about the way Kim Jae-beom drawls his words that immediately raises goosebumps, coupled with his unblinking gaze and the grin that never quite reaches his eyes. It all feels very curated, like a mask of theatrics and manipulation.

As if one perplexing figure wasn’t enough, we get another in the form of Ryu Kyung-soo. Accosting Seo-ha at Uncle’s funeral and lamenting his miserable fate in contrast to her successful life, he declares that he’s her younger half-brother KIM YOUNG-HO. His wailing is anguished and accusatory in a manner that toes the line between unwarranted and pitiable, and I’m torn between wanting to know more and wanting to keep him twenty feet away from Seo-ha.

The encounter leaves Seo-ha deeply shaken — not just because of Young-ho’s transgressions, but because he may actually be telling the truth. Long ago, when Seo-ha was still a student, she’d tracked her runaway father down using a return address and witnessed him playing with his new son.

The Bequeathed Ending Explained: Does Netflix K-Drama Have a Happy or Sad Ending?

By Sushmita Sen

Netflix’s limited series The Bequeathed premiered on Friday with all six episodes. Starring Kim Hyun-Joo as Yoon Seo-Ha, the suspense thriller K-drama revolves around the death of a family member, leading to ominous incidents.

It tells the story of Seo-Ha, an assistant professor unhappy with her job and cheating husband. One day, she gets a call that her uncle has passed away, and she needs to handle his burial. The news comes as a shock to her as she didn’t know she had an uncle.

She learns she inherited a vast burial ground when she reaches her hometown with her husband. She meets her half-brother Kim Yeong-Ho (Ryu Kyung-Soo) at the funeral, who behaves strangely, leaving Seo-Ha scared. Several dark and twisted events follow, and she ultimately gets a bittersweet ending.

After Seo-Ha’s uncle’s funeral, The Bequeathed shows detectives Choi Seong-Jun and Park Sang-Min questioning Kim Hyun-Joo’s Seo-Ha. She makes it clear to them that she never knew of her uncle and that her parents died long ago. She seems slightly startled by the funeral incident involving Kim Yeong-Ho.

Seo-Ha also has to deal with a greedy businessperson who wants her to sell the burial land. Adding to her troubles was a setback at work and arguments with her cheating husband over the inherited land. She kicks him out of her car in the middle of the road after a fight. The next scene shows someone shooting her husband with a hunter’s rifle.

At this point, Seo-Ha’s family case is more complicated than ever. The detectives suspect her and Yeong-Ho, but they fail to find any evidence against them. Seong-Jun, however, discovers that Seo-Ha once hired an investigator to tail her husband. The complication doesn’t end here as the next death is of the investigator. He is killed when he searches Yeong-Ho’s house on Seo-Ha’s demand. She suspects her half-brother to be the culprit.

Ryu Kyung-Soo‘s character appears extremely suspicious, especially after he is shown performing rituals with a bird’s blood and ancient drawings. After a series of murders, Seo-Ha’s instinct says Yeong-Ho is the killer but he keeps denying it and even tries to save her. The detectives, too, couldn’t find any proof against him. Detective Seong-Jun, on the other hand, visits a shaman to learn more about Yeong-Ho and his childhood. Once he returns, he realizes his and Seo-Ha’s lives are in danger.

The Bequeathed ending: A shocking family secret reveals the culprit

Towards The Bequeathed ending, detective Seong-Jun discovers that Seo-Ha and Yeong-Ho are related but through a strange bloodline. He learns that Ryu Kyung-Soo’s character is not the killer but someone else who wants the burial land.

When detective-duo Seong-Jun and Sang-Min visit the half-siblings’ father’s village, they discover he was romantically involved with his sister. Due to the unnatural relationship, the family and the village had shunned them. It was during this time when Seo-Ha’s father left her for someone else. In reality, he raised his son with his sister. After the father dies, Yeong-Ho’s mother becomes possessive of her son and wants the burial land for him.

Seo-Ho learns the truth when Yeong-Ho’s mother kidnaps her for the final sacrifice. To save herself, she tells her aunt that Yeong-Ho’s life is in danger after her deal with a property manager goes wrong.

Netflix’s K-drama The Bequeathed ending features the property manager trying to burn the half-siblings alive. Somehow, Yeong-Ho’s mother and Seo-Ha manage to save themselves along with Yeong-Ho. The detectives and the cops arrive at the same location to arrest the mother. But she bids a painful farewell to her son and runs into a burning building. The K-drama ends with Seo-Ha becoming an art teacher, living her life somewhere far away from the city. She doesn’t sell the burial land, instead, places the tombstones of her family.

The Bequeathed ending seems bittersweet. While Seo-Ha and Yeong-Ha gain freedom, they seem lonely. Meanwhile, all six episodes are streaming on Netflix.
