Song Kang Ho's upcoming debut K-drama will reportedly be released on a global OTT platform.

According to an exclusive report from media outlet OSEN on November 21, the upcoming K-drama Uncle Samsik will be released through the global OTT platform Disney+. Although there is no signed contract yet, it is said that the drama can't be broadcast on national or cable channels. It was also revealed that the upcoming K-drama will have a 40 billion won (approx. $30,950,892) budget for its production. 

Uncle Samsik will be Song Kang Ho's first time leading a K-drama since his debut. After 33 years, the top actor has decided to appear on the small screen. This will also possibly be Song Kang Ho's first-ever project with Disney+. 

For this year, Song Kang Ho led the movie Cobweb with Im Soo Jung, Oh Jung Se, Jeon Yeo Been, Krystal Jung, and Park Jung Soo. 

Song Kang Ho is also expected to star in the upcoming film One Win with Park Jung Min, Lee Joo Young, Lee Min Ji, Jang Yoon Ju, and Park Myung Hoon.

The top actor is known for leading the hit films Emergency Declaration, Broker, Parasite, The Drug King, A Taxi Driver, The Attorney, Snowpiercer, and more.

 

Uncle Samsik will tell the story and journey of two men named Uncle Samsik and Kim San who faced turbulent times in the early 1960s. 

The upcoming K-drama will be led by Song Kang Ho, Byun Yo Han, Jin Ki Joo, Lee Kyu Hyung, Seo Hyun Woo, and Oh Seung Hoon. 

Uncle Samsik was originally scheduled to premiere before 2023 ends but the airing got delayed and it will officially be broadcast next year. The K-drama will have a total of 10 episodes.

Song Kang Ho’s first-ever drama has confirmed its broadcast plans!

 

On January 3, it was confirmed that the star-studded new drama “Uncle Sam Sik” (literal title) will premiere in the first half of 2024 via Disney+.

 

“Uncle Sam Sik” is a drama that tells the story of ambitions and bromance of two men, Uncle Sam Sik and Kim San, who survived the turbulent period of the early 1960s in Korea.

 

Song Kang Ho will play the role of Uncle Sam Sik while Byun Yo Han will portray Kim San, a top elite student from the Korea Military Academy and a recipient of the Albright scholarship. Alongside the lead characters, Lee Kyu Hyung will star as Kang Sung Min, a candidate to be the next leader, Seo Hyun Woo as the elite army soldier Jeong Han Min, who went to train alongside Kim San as another recipient of the Albright scholarship, and Jin Ki Joo as Kim San’s love Joo Yeo Jin. Previously in June of 2023, Girls’ Generation’s Tiffany Young was also confirmed to join the cast.

It’s actually exciting to see early footage and stills, as many of these shows seem to go behind an iron curtain after initial casting news, making us wait months – or years even – before we can start preparing the popcorn. Note to self: buy more snacks.

On April 2, Disney+ confirmed that the 16-episode series “Uncle Samsik” will premiere on May 15.

“Uncle Samsik” is a drama that tells the story of the ambitions and bromance of two men, Uncle Samsik and Kim San, who survived the turbulent period of the early 1960s in Korea.

Song Kang Ho plays Park Doo Chil, who is nicknamed Uncle Samsik because he managed to feed his family three meals a day even during wartime (the phrase “samsik” can mean “three meals” in Korean), and Byun Yo Han plays Kim San, a top elite student from the Korea Military Academy who dreams of changing the country.

The newly released poster captures Uncle Samsik smiling broadly while holding snacks in one hand and dried fish in the other. The caption reads, “When the stomach is full, the heart opens up.”

Meanwhile, the accompanying teaser starts with someone asking who Uncle Samsik is. Several people then call out for “Uncle Samsik,” with Joo Yeo Jin (Jin Ki Joo) asking, “You are Uncle Samsik, right?”

The upcoming historical drama Uncle Samsik has confirmed its release for May 15.

Uncle Samsik tells the story of Uncle Sam Sik (Song Kang Ho) and an elite young man, Kim San (Byun Yo Han), who dream of building a country where everyone eats well and lives well. The K-drama is set in the chaotic era of the 1960s. 

The teaser shows scenes of various people looking for Uncle Sam Sik. Some call out to him with joy, while others do so with suspicion, earnestness, or disdain.

Sam Sik is the portmanteau for "three" (sam) and "meals" (siksa). 

Responding to the question "What does Sam Sik mean?" elite young man Kim San explains, "It signifies that even during the war, he ate three meals a day, and his family never went hungry." To this, Song  Uncle Sam Sik responds, "Everyone calls me that out of love and respect. I really like it. It's my nickname."

The poster portrays Uncle Sam Sik's warm gaze and gentle smile while he holds snacks in one hand and a dried fish in the other. The text "When your stomach is full, your heart opens" encapsulates Uncle Sam Sik's motto and his life philosophy.

After an 18-year illustrious film career, Song Kang-ho (Cobweb) makes his television series debut in Disney+’s 1960s period drama Uncle Sam-shik. Set against the backdrop of post-war Korea — a time of political revolution and corruption — this upcoming drama tells the story of a legendary man whose name is spread far and wide: Uncle Sam-shik.

The teaser opens with a child asking who Uncle Sam-shik is as they receive two bundles of food at their front door. We then get a glimpse of the various characters that will populate this world as they each call out to Sam-shik. The list of faces includes Yoo Jae-myung (Song of the Bandits), Tiffany Young (Reborn Rich), Lee Kyu-hyung (Big Bet), Jin Ki-joo (My Perfect Stranger), Seo Hyun-woo (A Shop for Killers), and many more.

 

As someone asks what Uncle Sam-shik means, Byun Yo-han (Mr. Sunshine) explains its significance: even during the war, he fed his family three meals a day and wouldn’t starve them. In Korean, “samshik” means three meals a day, adding to the lore that Uncle Sam-shik isn’t just a name but a title.

 

 

Song Kang-ho then answers, as the titular Uncle Sam-shik, that everyone calls him that out of love and respect. He couldn’t be happier with his nickname, and in a dark room, he chuckles as the camera cuts away. Given the time period, I suspect our hero is being “interrogated,” but even in the face of danger, he laughs.

Like the teaser, the poster explains the origin of his nickname (i.e., he kept his family fed) and depicts Uncle Sam-shik in a similar vein. As if offering the audience some food, Song Kang-ho holds sweets in one hand and dried fish in the other while standing in what looks like a bakery. The tagline also reads, “If the belly is full, the heart will open.”

Written and directed by filmmaker Shin Yeon-shik (Cassiopeia), Disney+’s Uncle Sam-shik is slated for 16 episodes and will premiere May 15.

“Uncle Samsik” is a drama that tells the story of the ambitions and bromance of two men, Park Doo Chil (Song Kang Ho) and Kim San (Byun Yo Han), who survived the turbulent period of the early 1960s in Korea.

The newly released teaser begins with people looking for Uncle Samsik in different situations and Park Doo Chil calmly saying, “Everyone calls me Uncle Samsik out of love and respect. I love it so much. It’s my nickname.”

The teaser also previews characters who want to achieve their dreams and ambitions as they become entangled with each other including Kim San, who strives for a national reconstruction project but is frustrated by the difficult reality, and Kang Sung Min (Lee Kyu Hyung), who makes a dangerous proposal to Uncle Samsik for his own success.

Uncle Samsik proposes a grand plan to Kim San, saying, “I have one talent. I can give you everything.” The determined facial expressions of the two raise anticipation for their scheme that will unfold in the future.
