<Story Outlines>

For all the women in this country who identify themselves with Sam-soon and For all average girls in the world...

According to a survey, 73% of all Korean women consider themselves fat. This means that about seven out of ten women in this country see themselves as being overweight. Our heroine Kim Sam-soon is one of those women.

Heartbroken after a breakup with her boyfriend, she gained 7 kilograms as a result of heavy drinking and eating out of depression. She’s an overweight 29-year-old single woman. She doesn’t have a college degree. She’s a qualified patissier, which is a pastry maker. However, she’s fired from her job on Christmas Eve. She doesn’t have a boyfriend. She doesn’t have a nice apartment for herself, nor does she have a car. She’s just average, nothing special. She, like so many women at her age, goes between dreams and reality.

She dreams of a movie-like romance, but she also knows that it will never happen. When she’s focusing on her work, it seems okay not to have anyone to share her life with. She dreams of making lots of money and traveling all over the world for the rest of her life. Her heart is racing when a young and handsome man treats her kindly. On the other hand, she sometimes gets scared of the fact that time flies and she’s getting older and older. She sometimes dreams of getting rich overnight, so she can pursue her dream that she had to give up.

Seven women out of ten, the average women in this country! This story presents you a gift of romance with a box of sweet chocolate. You should become courageous and strong like Sam-soon. Sometimes the bitterness of life will hurt you, sometimes love will make you cry. However, don’t become mean or harsh. Just grow stronger!

A Romantic Comedy Filled with Various Tastes

When you’re absorbed in something, especially when you’re in love, your brain produces a chemical substance called phenylethylamine. However, once you’re not in love anymore, the chemical stop being produced, and you’re likely to become depressed and nervous. The interesting fact is that chocolate contains more phenylethylamine than any other food product. Chocolate not only tastes great, but also can cure your broken heart.

Good quality chocolate is supposed to melt not in your hand, but in your mouth. It tastes different as well. The production team wants to make a romantic comedy drama filled with many different flavors, just as a top quality chocolate made by the world best chocolatier.

<Simple storyline, sincere emotions, pleasant laughter, bitter tears, and all the happiness and sadness in life melt away in this drama>

Each character in the story will play a unique role, like different-colored and shaped chocolates in a box. Just as a perfect-looking chocolate box needs all the other elements to be completed, each character makes the story more complete. When you open a box, you should ask for a refund if there is something missing. The production team makes every effort to present viewers a perfect gift of chocolate.

A Drama Like a Humble Steamed Rice Cake

Sam-soon is the third daughter of a rice cake maker. While his father makes steamed rice cakes at his shop, she bakes cakes in the restaurant.

While a beautifully decorated cake symbolizes the love between a man and a woman, rice cake represents love in the family. These days, not many people make steam rice cakes at home. Familial love doesn’t seem as tight as it used to. However, Sam-soon’s family is an exception. Their shop keeps making rice cakes and their love for one another stays strong.

We want to portray a heartwarming story of a family. We hope people think about making rice cakes themselves while seeing rice cakes on TV. We hope they think about what they have forgotten without realizing it.

<Main Characters>

Kim Sam-soon / 29 years old / Job: patissier / Played by Kim Seon-ah

She’s not pretty, nor is she thin. She’s not that young anymore. She’s a rather weird single woman. She’s the third daughter of a rice cake maker. She used to play basketball in high school. She enjoys talking to herself and she’s very curious about every little thing in the world. She eats, drinks and sleeps when she gets stressed. Ice cream, rice cakes with red pepper paste, sundae (sausages made of bean curd, mung-bean sprouts and pig’s blood stuffed in pig intestine), So-ju (distilled liquor), and eel; these are her favorite snacks. Without realizing it, she became 29 years old. She knows that there’s no such thing as Prince Charming. At least she has enough sense of reality to know that Prince Charming isn’t going to show up in her life. Therefore, she doesn’t wait for someone who will change her life. She manages to lead her life without being discouraged, just like a dandelion surviving on the pavement. She had a boyfriend who cheated on her. She said that she would forget him, but the truth was that she was hurt and she still thinks of him. One day, another man comes up in Sam-soon’s life. He shows up again and turns out to be her employer, and he suggests to her a secret deal. He asks her to be his contract girlfriend. They need to act as a couple and she has to take part in his lie. Sam-soon realizes that the man isn’t her type despite his handsome appearance and wonderful background. He always does as he pleases. He looks sad. She believes that she could never be attracted to a man like him. Therefore, she accepts the deal. Besides, she needs money to prevent her family’s house from being put up for auction. To get the money she needs, she decides to become his contract girlfriend. She finally signs the contract. She tries to persuade herself that she’s doing the right thing for everyone. She doesn’t know things will turn out differently than she expected.

Hyeon Jin-heon / 27 years old / Job: owner of the restaurant “Bon Appetit” / Played by Hyeon Bin

Everyone has something that he or she wants to hide. Nobody should mention that subject around him. He seems to have more skeletons in his closet than other people; his brother and his sister-in-law who died in a car accident three years ago, his left leg injured in the same accident and the woman who left him, Yoo Hee-jin.

Even before the accident, he wasn’t a happy and amicable guy. However, he was considered the luckiest guy who has all. His family owns a hotel. He’s good-looking and sharp. He wasn’t afraid of anything. However, after his brother and sister died in the accident caused by his mistake, he faced the cruelty of life. He learned sadness in a hard way. It made him even more twisted and cynical. Overwhelmed by his guilty conscience, he yielded to self-hatred. However, Hee-jin left him without explaining why. She only told him to wait for her for three years until she comes back.

Yoo Hee-jin / 27 years old / Jin-heon’s ex-girlfriend / Played by Jeong Ryeo-won

She’s beautiful. She’s nice and kind. She’s smart and warm-hearted. Her parents are doctors and she’s their only daughter. She’s never known any difficulties in her life. She met Jin-heon when they were high school students. They went out for 6 years until she left him for some unknown reason. When she was at college, her parents moved to the US, but she remained alone to be with Jin-heon. She loved him very much.

She wanted to be his wife. However, cancer took everything away from her. She had to leave him to keep her love. To keep her promise to Jin-heon to come back in 3 years, she made up her mind to survive cancer whatever it takes. She endured a horrible surgery and 2 years of chemotherapy so as to come back to Jin-heon. Finally, she won. She’s come back to him. Her smile is as beautiful as before. She wants him back. However, he says that he loves someone else. She fought the fear of death and terrible loneliness, but now she has to fight against Sam-soon who seems to have nothing special to win her love back.

Henry Kim / In his mid-30s / Job: Korean-American doctor, who was adopted by Americans as a child / Played by Daniel Henney

He was adopted by Americans at the age of two and raised in the US. With a loving care of his adoptive parents, he became a wonderful, confident man. He has an Asian appearance, but his way of thinking is very reasonable and westernized. He’s religious, calm and generous. He doesn’t speak Korean very well. He’s a man of few words, as well. Falling in love with Hee-jin who came to the USA for her cancer treatment, he has made every effort for her as both a doctor and a man. However, he knows that Hee-jin doesn’t love him. He knows that she just trusts him and respects him as her doctor. He also knows that she desperately fought cancer to go back to Jin-heon. Therefore, he doesn’t expect anything from her. He just wants to take care of her. He can be happy just by being next to her and by proving his love. When Hee-jin went back to Korea and didn’t come back, he decided to go to Korea to be with her. He quit his job and followed her to Seoul. He stays with her and takes care of her as a doctor. He loves her, but he doesn’t try to control her. If she really loves Jin-heon, he genuinely wants her to be with the man she loves. He just wants her to be happy and healthy. Two more years are needed to make sure that Hee-jin is completely cured. His only concern is that her cancer might reappear within that period.

Winter Sonata

August 5 - 13 every weekend

5 ~ 11:30 pm ET / 2 ~ 8:30 pm PT

AZNWave_490x298-WS.jpg

Another masterpiece by Korea's revered director, Yoon Suk-ho, Winter Sonata is the second installment of his famous four season series, the previous being Autumn Fairy Tale and the latest, Scent of Summer. Like its predecessor, Autumn Fairy Tale, Winter Sonata has a huge following in many parts of Asia, including Hong Kong, Taiwan, China, Japan and Southeast Asia. Its two leading stars, Bae Yong-jun (Untold Scandal) and Choi Ji-woo also gained international fame because of the series.

Bae Yong-jun takes up the role of Kang Joon-sang, an illegitimate child whose mother is an accomplished pianist. Due to his parental background, he is an introvert who does not like to interact with people, and often does not take the initiative to express himself. Even though his mother has told him his father is dead, as a child, Joon-sang believes that he is still alive. Hence, when he becomes older, he decides to return to his mother's hometown, where his parents were lovers, in a bid to look for his biological father.

Joon-sang then transfers to the high school where Yoo-jin (Choi Ji-woo) studies. A couple of entertaining anecdotes then happen between the two protagonists and through these incidents, they grow to like each other. However, as Joon-sang investigates, he realizes that his biological father might be Yoo-jin's late father. Flustered by his new findings, he decides to leave. However, as he decides to rush to see Yoo-jin for one last time, he is knocked down by a car...

Meanwhile, as the rest of his schoolmates including Yoo-jin think that he is dead after the accident, he is in fact alive, but he has lost his memory. In a bid to let him lead a happier life, his mother decides to erase his previous memories and give him new memories with a new identity, Lee Min-hyung.

The show than fast forwards 10 years later, as Joon-sang and Yoo-jin have both grown up. Joon-sang returns as Min-hyung and as Chae-rin's boyfriend (Chae-rin was Yoo-jin and Joon-sang's classmate in high school, but later went to France for further studies). During this time, Yoo-jin was about to get engaged to her childhood playmate Sang-hyuk, played by up-and-coming actor Park Yong-ha. However, due to a twist of fate, Joon-sang and Yoo-jin meet again and become attracted to each other once more. As the fate of the four intertwines, the show goes on to tell of the enthralling love story between Joon-sang and Yoo-jin.

Winter Sonata is a captivating story. The chemistry between Bae Yong-jun and Choi Ji-woo is terrific. In fact, many people were so impressed by them that rumours surfaced that they were a real-life couple. Bae Yong-jun certainly impressed many with his gripping performance of Joon-sang and Min-hyung. This could be said to be his breakthrough drama, as it was through this show that he shot to great fame. Choi Ji-woo also proves herself as an A-list actress with her overwhelming performance as Yoo-jin. One of her scenes which enthralled me was when she was confronting Joon-sang, urging him not to fire an old worker. The feeling of urgency then topped 100%.

As for the supporting leads, Park Sol-mi did a good impersonation of Chae-rin. Park Yong-ha did fairly well, but acting alongside veteran actors Bae Yong-jun and Choi Ji-woo, he clearly showed his inexperience in this field. Finally, it would be almost unjust to leave Kim Hae-sook out of the picture. Acting as Yoo-jin's mother, her performance as the Korean "ajumma" added flavour and colour throughout the whole show.

Again, Yoon Suk-ho has proven himself as one of Korea's best drama tellers. With an impressive portfolio, many audience members certainly do look forward to his subsequent dramas. Winter Sonata is an original love story. It's definitely not-to-be-missed!
