What’s new in K-dramaland this July

July = holidays = prime K-drama binge watching time.

In the first half of 2017 we’ve experienced all sorts of drama highs and lows. We wept our way through the ‘sad love’ ending of Goblin. Our hearts collectively burst from the combined sweetness of Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo and Strong Woman Do Bong Soon, and we all imploded when we found out that Nam Joo Hyuk and Lee Sung Kyung were dating in real life. Of course, we also suffered from the disappointment of being unable to keep up with every single drama that was released (the eye-bags I got from trying are still here).

But hey, it’s the start of the second half of the year so it’s time to start afresh.

This coming July there is a whole load of promising dramas to pursue and it would be remiss to not check them all out. Here are the dramas to look out for in July:

The Bride of Habaek/Bride of the Water God (July 3)

That’s right, Nam Joo Hyuk is returning as a lead in a drama and we're all going to be better off for it. No longer the super sweet swimming champion, Nam Joo Hyuk will be leveling up and playing Habaek, a Water God, in this modern transformation of the 2006 hit manhwa Bride of the Water God. The whole cast is just completely stunning in this drama, which is understandable considering it's a fantasy genre and the fact that many of the characters are gods/goddesses. The hype for this show has been building with each teaser that’s been released, with everything from a Romeo and Juliet fish-tank-like encounter to Habaek trying to exert control over highly modern toilets.

You know it’s going to be good when teasers involve Nam Joo Hyuk talking to toilets.

On June 27, the main cast and director of tvN’s “Bride of the Water God” attended the press conference ahead of the drama’s premiere on July 3.

At the press conference, actor Nam Joo Hyuk talked about his role as the water god Ha Baek and, when asked if he felt any burden about the character he has taken on, he responded, “The charm of the story outweighed any burden. The narrative is really fun.”

One reporter asked for his thoughts on the speech similarities between his character and Gong Yoo’s character from the hit tvN drama “Goblin,” to which he said, “It isn’t something that I thought of beforehand. When reading the script, that way of speaking just naturally came out.”
