Han Hyo-joo becomes a gisaeng for sentimental period film

By Javabeans | dramabeans

hyojoo_141.jpg

Han Hyo-joo (Cold Eyes; Gwanghae, the Man Who Became King) has chosen her next project, a historical movie titled Haeohwa, in which she stars as Joseon’s top gisaeng. It’ll be an “impassioned, sentimental” film, which seems to be right up Han’s alley, considering the kinds of moody and romantic roles she’s taken in recent years.

Well, Han’s no stranger to historical pieces (her best performance probably being Dong Yi), nor is she new to playing intelligent and beautiful heroines, so this role sounds like a clear fit for her. The title Haeohwa means “flower that understands words,” and the movie tells the story of “setbacks, sadness, sympathy and pity.” That’s all very vague as far as descriptions go, but it sounds like this will be a movie that’s more about character emotion and relationships than a driving plot; I expect that mood and tone will play a large role in the film.

Han Hyo-joo has made the leap pretty solidly to film after getting her start on television, and it looks like she may be content to stay in that part of the industry. It’s understandable (movies carry a different kind of critical cachet, and have better schedules), though as someone who just inherently prefers television I’d kinda like her to take a drama once and again, because it feels like ages since I’ve seen her in anything at all even though she remains pretty busy with a constant stream of movie roles. I know, I could just watch a movie, but you can’t stop me from wanting the dramas.

Haeohwa will be directed by Park Heung-shik of Children of Heaven and Memories of the Sword, and plans to begin filming in the first half of next year. Han Hyo-joo will wrap up work on her movie Beauty Inside first, then move on to Haeohwa.

Yoo Yeon-seok to reunite with Han Hyo-joo in period movie

By Javabeans | dramabeans

yooyeonseok_48.jpg

Yoo Yeon-seok (Answer Me 1994, The Informant) is, happily and sadly, lining up another film as his next project — happily because it’s great his career is booming and keeping him fully booked, but sadly because I want my favorite actors to be in dramaland as much as possible. Films are great and all, but they just don’t bring you immediacy and intimacy with an actor the way that dramas do.

The project Yoo Yeon-seok is reportedly in the final negotiation phase for is Haeohwa(pronounced hey-uh-hwa), a period melo film that recently cast Han Hyo-joo (Cold Eyes) to play a top gisaeng in a story of a woman’s “despair, sorrow, and pity.” It’ll be a Joseon-set piece, which means Yoo Yeon-seok gets to stay in the same era after having completed period movie Tailor, in which he played a king dressed in finery made by the nation’s most gifted designers. Haeohwa refers to a flower that speaks (I’m taking that to be a metaphor) and will showcase traditional dance, song, cuisine, and the arts — so expect a feast for the eyes, and probably ears, with the project going for a refined, sentimental approach.

New star Chun Woo-hee, who made a splash on the scene with last year’s lauded indie film Han Gong-ju, is also positively considering the movie. Her role would be as Han Hyo-joo’s fellow gisaeng and friend, though I expect that friendship to be tested by their relationship(s) to Yoo Yeon-seok’s character, a talented songwriter who loves them both. So we know where the melo line comes from.

If Yoo Yeon-seok ends up confirming, he’ll be reuniting with Han Hyo-joo pretty soon after their last project together, the body-swapping movie Beauty Inside, where he plays one of the bodies hosting the hero as he hops involuntarily from host to host. Haeohwa is currently wrapping up its casting stage and plans to begin filming in April.

Han Hyo Joo Plays A Gisaeng Who Wants To Sing

By Julie Jones | Kdramastars

(PHOTO : KDRAMASTARS)

Gisaengs have been the subject of several k-dramas and films such as "Hwang Jin Yi." Most stories about gisaengs focus on their heyday, the Joseon era, but the upcoming film "Haeeohwa" is set during World War II when gisaengs no longer officially existed.

Here's a little background about gisaengs to provide some perspective. These women were courtesans that were carefully trained and accomplished in fine arts, poetry and prose, but they were also slaves who could make few choices about their own destiny. While some gisaengs earned a lot of money and acquired fame, they could not escape the gisaeng class and children born to gisaengs, even if their fathers were noblemen, often became gisaengs or slaves too.

In 1895 Korea officially abolished the class system and slavery. Technically free, some gisaeng then went to work elsewhere but others continued to work as entertainers and prostitutes. By the end of World War II, gisaengs as entertainers had all but vanished.

The story of the film "Haeeohwa" focuses on a gisaeng in 1943, when the Japanese ruled Korea.

Jung So Yool, played by Han Hyo Joo, is a gisaeng with exceptional vocal talent who dreams of becoming a singer. Han Hyo Joo's recent film roles include "Beauty Inside" and 'C'est Si Bon." She has not appeared in a drama since the 2010 drama "Dong Yi."

Yoo Yeon Suk plays Yoon Woo, a composer who wants to write a romantic song that moves hearts. Yoo Yeon Suk also appeared in the film "Beauty Inside" and the film "Perfect Proposal." His last drama was 'Warm and Cozy" about a Jeju Island restaurant.

Chun Woo Hee plays Yeon Hee, So Yool's best friend and a fellow singer. Chun Woo Hee's film roles in 2015 included "The Piper," "The Wailing" and "The Beauty Inside." Her last drama appearance was in 2011, in "Vampire Idol."

"Haeeohwa" has an April release date.

"Haeeohwa" Han Hyo-joo is different with innocent and provocative eyes

Hancinema

posterphoto692647.jpg

In the unfortunate time of the year 1943, the story of the last Gisaeng who dreamt of becoming a singer is told in the movie "Haeeohwa" starring Han Hyo-joo, Yoo Yeon-seok, Cheon Woo-hee and others.

So-yool is considered the best singer during her time with her beauty and outstanding vocals. In the stills, Han Hyo-joo looks elegant but full of desire and her eyes show that she wants what se desires.

Han Hyo-joo has been the icon of innocence until now. In "Haeeohwa", she starts out as innocent, but slowly turns provocative as she strives for what she wants.

Yeon-hee's (Cheon Woo-hee) pure image contrasts from that of her typical style. She is more charming and bright in "Haeeohwa" and she is So-yool's best friend. She also has a voice like no other and she is expected to steal the show.

In the role of the best composer Yoon Woo is played by Yoo Yeon-seok. He wants to make a song that will touch the hearts of the public. He is a romantic pianist and a sincere composer who synchronizes with Han Hyo-joo and Cheon Woo-hee.

"Haeeohwa", the story of the last Gisaeng in the year 1943, will be released on April 13.
