Synopsis:

Yuan Hao is a successful businessman who has a fear of marriage. By chance, he meets nurse Xiao Chun, who also believes marriages are useless. I've even taken to catching the odd episode here and there because of Hu Ge mainly because I've never seen him in a modern drama before.  It's a bit too slow for my liking. I'm still waiting for his character to wake up to his current GF... who is a two-faced manipulative such and such.

The fellow is in dire need of a good feed. It was fine for him to look gaunt in LYB but while he's still pretty dashing, he looks unhealthy.

Anyway, I want him to get together with the female lead soon.

Starting this last night and currently on episode 15. Came to see if there was a soompi thread for this drama because I couldn't find anything about this drama searching for it on Google.

Are the 38 episodes confirmed?

Summarised version is that while he was driving one day, he accidentally hit the taxi which the current gf is riding in. She fractured her left hand I think, that's why her left hand is in a cast. He looked after her when she was in the hospital. He was really kind and considerate to her and everything. She realised he is kind of rich and good looking so she chased after him playing the sweet and innocent girlfriend. That's how they started dating.

Never thought I'd say this, but I miss Shan Shan. If we have to put up with a second lead, it might as well be Shan Shan. At least she was straightforward and honest about who and what she is. This Bing Bing character seems to have three faces.

However many faces Bing Bing has,  she's finally unmasked herself as the half-crazed predator that she really is and Yuan Hao finally gets that bolt of lightning that's been evading him. The red flags have been up for a while but she's really glib and rather good at covering her tracks. But it was only a matter of time. (That bit sort of reminds of me Shao Nian Yang Jia Jiang) I love how she really has no sense of guilt or remorse whatsoever. It's always someone else's fault that her schemes have come unstuck.  Playing two guys (one of them married, the other with abandonment issues) and all she thinks about is how her bestie might be stealing her BF from under her nose. Such audacity should be bottled and sold.

I thought it was interesting how the show threw light on the differences between Xiao Cun and Bing Bing in that organized trip with Yuan Hao's new travel company. Xiao Cun wanted to help a friend launch his business and all Bing Bing thinks about is getting her hooks deeper into Yuan Hao as a meal ticket. I don't get the feeling at all that she's really interested in him personally.

Episode 28 was good on quite a few levels. Yuan Hao coming to grips with his mummy issues and I guess that's in the works for Xiao Chun too with her biological mother making her appearance.

Our boy was weakening after watching Bing Bing's ballet video so it was a good slap in the face for him to find out that she's the two-timing witch that she is. The whole thing suggests to me that he went for her purely on that fantasy of her as a graceful, elegant ballerina with no or very little knowledge of what's really behind that facade.  

Perhaps now that he's gotten his mummy issues out of the way, he might finally see what's been under his nose all along.

Yeah...very little scenes of XC in the last 2 episodes except for her real mom showing up scene. Thumbs up for the little bro for sending off BB to a hotel. So that now YH is finally seeing the true colours of the two face witch. Looking forward to future episodes of XC with YH.

Yahoo... friends finally become lovers! Wow, it was hard to track down the last two episodes. Not sure why.

I genuinely believe that this show is Mainland China's answer to In Time with You. It drags rather similarly but in some ways it's better executed than In Time With You. My Mandarin's been underutilized and very rusty but I've really come to appreciate the dialogue much more in recent days. Especially the flirty banter between the lead couple.

^^I was wondering about that too. The subbing seems to have stalled at Ep. 10.

YH's dad was quite hilarious. I suppose he's thrilled to bits that his only son has found himself a really great girl. The elders certainly went overboard with wedding preparations. Shan Shan's mother was particularly overbearing especially when she's not even a member of the family.  All the haggling brought back memories for me. The stress of it all. I'm so glad that I've been there and done that. 

YH is such a sweetheart all round. Taking her to inner Mongolia to the steppes to trace her biological father's footsteps and then taking such good care of her now that she's incapacitated. I guess she's now depressed that the prognosis isn't great.

I imagine, from the trailers that we're in for some noble idiocy but I'm expecting everything to come good in the end.

The script is pretty special -- the dialogue the real standout for me. The story is fairly standard stuff but the dialogue really lifts the material. All those puns and rapid fire delivery... it must be a challenge translating those. The references to Journey to the West, Tripitaka, demonesses and Pigsy is rather cute.

So jealous of you guys who speak Mandarin and know what's going on. I've just been watching and enjoying the story w/o subs, I can deduce a lot of what's going on but I'm still confused about a lot things. I hope the team at Viki doesn't stop translating because once I've finished the raw episodes, I very much plan to watch them all again, with subs.

Well, @krypticsage, if there's anything in particular that you'd like to know and can't wait for the subs, I'll do my best to help a fellow Dr Who fan.  But my Mandarin's been collecting dust over the years and it squeaks when I try to use that part of the brain.  And I really don't have time to do full recaps of anything especially when things are so ridiculously busy right now. 

I don't suppose it was ever in doubt that Yuan Hao and Xiao Chun would get their happily ever after. But I did find the ending very unsatisfying on so many levels.

So much was made of Xiao Chun's temporary blindness but when she decides she has to leave Yuan Hao because he's putting his own life on hold for her and for her being a burden, she has a bit of a sob, starts to regain her sight and then next thing we know, they're in Mongolia a month later, he's decocting bitter medicinal herbs for her. The they waffle on about going back to the beginning, back to the place they first met. "Wherever you go, I'm willing to go to." Isn't that all a trite rehash of stuff that was said pre-blindness?

So what was the point of all that apart from the fact it kept the OTP from marrying each other for 3-4 episodes? Xiao Chun doesn't feel worthy of being loved because she's blind so what's the moral of the story? If you're blind, you don't deserve to have a shot of happiness because you're a pain in the neck to the people you love???? So it's only okay to be with the man you love because now you can see? Apparently love doesn't really conquer all, least of all a disability.

For me that is the 500 kg elephant in the room. It doesn't do anything of substance with XC's blindness except as some kind of delaying tactic. This is the problem with with a 15 minute noble idiocy. By all means be a noble idiot... run away for an episode or two, feel a pang or two, agonize, angst properly... maybe even get kidnapped by a homicidal maniac. It's all good and then when you've been rescued, get the biggest scolding of your life from the man you love and all your friends for being such a headstrong, proud moron. But no, here nothing really happens. She learns nothing. It's as if the blindness was a mere footnote in their relationship. The scene from the trailer where YH finds her letter was not included. So where did she think she was running off to, what was she leaving him to go to? Her parents place? So how would she be a burden to him and not to them?

So why did they bother with this blind arc? Obviously they didn't care enough about it to give XC any real character development through that experience. It would've been better if they just got married, went to live with his dad and learnt to navigate married life together as two working professionals.

What was the point of this feeble attempt at last minute melodrama that went no where?

And where were the elders in this? They pretty ubiquitous in the two episodes leading up to this arc and none of them made an appearance in the last two.

Hu Ge was terrific and his interactions with Wang Xiao Chen was wonderful. But this wasn't a 38 episode drama. 25-30 at the very most. If A Gentleman's Dignity could be done in 20 episodes, I don't see why this couldn't have been trimmed.

I agree with you @‌‌40somethingahjumma. The last few episodes felt like there was no development to the story.

Though YH and XC interactions were nice as it's quite funny to see how they banter with each other. But, it was also frustrating to watch how stubborn XC is about receiving help from YH. And the irony is that XC was actually an eye specialist doctor. Is she going to tell her patients who have eye sight problem to not receive help and support from their family and loved ones like herself?? It's a good thing being independent and learning how to deal with blindness on her own, but sometimes when you need help...you just need to learn to be open receiving it.

The last minute melodrama really wasn't as dramatic or heartbreaking as shown in the trailer.  And yes, the missing family elders were a bit odd. It makes me think that there's some disconnect to the earlier storyline... something was definitely lacking in the last 3-4 episodes. But, cheers for happy ending anyway. In the last few minutes, when XC regained her eyesight after deciding to leave YH, I'll just think that it was God's helping hand...that both XC and YH are meant to be together so she regained her eyesight. The temporary blindness was a test to them and it was proven that their love is true and real.

I like Wang Xiao Chen too... she really portrayed the role really well. Whenever YH and XC argue and banter with each other, I can't help but smile. The dialogue between them was quite humorous as well (though I think I only understood 50% of the dialogue). 

 

Re: Xiao Chun 

The act of God or "miracle" I don't mind.  In some ways, it wasn't a really a miracle per se because there was always a possibility that she could come out of it. I think the doctor said that 50% of people do recover from this temporary blindness. Regaining her sight itself didn't bother me but more the timing of it and how badly and quickly everything was resolved. She was about to take off to goodness-knows-where and leave Yuan Hao. Then she recovers but there's no acknowledgement about how much he loved her or how much she was about to hurt him.

I would've been fine with her remaining blind actually if it meant that we got a better ending than the one we did. Or at

 

Anyway, if there's another version of the ending lying somewhere in future, I'd love to get a hold of it. Someone really butchered this one up.

I really want to  watch it because of my love for Hu Ge,, but it's  not  subbed enough for me to start going nutsy on it. I don't want to run out of episode to watch. Because of Hu Ge I'm determined to  watch it without fast-forwarding.
