This is a capital punishment in Joseon Dynasty - a sentence to death for high treason (daeyukbudochoe) by dismemberment

The sentence dictates that the prisoner will be drawn by horses or cattle & quartered from his torso of all his limbs

It is a Confucian belief that one must die with his body intact, so dismemberment is the greatest humiliation to that belief. This is why prisoner render their gratitude when they are sentence to death by poisoning (an integrity death) as it will fulfilled that they will died with an intact body

@valsava   Let's see... Between Gae Shi and Yi Chum, they poisoned the ex-king ( Gwanghae's father), had Prince Imhae drink poison ( Gwanghae's elder brother ), aborted Gwanghae's concubines, killed the ex-prime minister Lee Deok Hyung, killed the Grand Prince, tried to kill the Princess once and latest, poisoned her...
She has basically killed Gwanghaegun's family one by one!
Not sure how many of those are facts, and how many are fictions.
Let's say just for the drama.
How far will Gai Si go with her murderous manipulation especially with the attempt to kill the Princess?

And just how far will the King let her get away with it?

@smp567 exactly basically she has killed the kings whole family. .. and have the same question what is fact and what is fictional about all the killings... and i was reading other dramas about kwangee character was really Ga shi his concubine? ?? I think she was correct? ..

@purpledrama

I remember we talked about this somewhere and @gerrytan8063 mentioned that she was one of Gwanghaegun's concubine, some low rank that allowed her to move around, not consigned to be only at the inner court like those high rank wives of the king.
It doesn't make much sense that a king's servant can have that much authority going around and kill so many of the king's family...

Whenever you have time ( it's quite long..), would you mind sharing with us briefly what it says below?  And what does Heo Gyun's last word to the King mean?
Thank you.

The band that Princess Jeongmyeong is wearing in her forehead when she is wearing her hair in topknot (Sangtu, 상투) is called the Mangeon (망건,網巾), it is place around the head to secure the "Gat" (Joseon men brimmed hat) in place. It is made out of horse hair & the material of its Gwanja (관자,貫子 - the band buttons at the sides) & pungjam (풍잠,風簪, a button that is in front of the forehead when wearing the gwan -관, headgear) marked the social class of the wearer

I thought that Episode 20 already been eng sub

It tells on how Heo Gyun had great social aspiration but was deem to fail. it is easy to come up with theory but it is harder to put down to practice

The tales of Hong Gil Do was the first Hangeul novel to address social disparity of the times

The Hangeul book in print is "Water Margin" (수호전,水滸傳). The novel written in the Ming Dynasty set in the Song Dynasty also address social disparity

Then it tells about the life & times of Heo Gyun & Joseon nobility & commoners (반상,班常) which already given in brief (remember in page 77)

As for his charges of treason, he never admitted but dies a tragic death

Thank you so much.  So the class-free and corruption-free society that Heo Gyun dreamed of was not realistic from the beginning. It only existed in his novel, the Tale of Hong gil dong...

Since Heo Gyun never admitted to the accusation, there might be the possibility that he was not totally guilty?...

Doctor.jpg

At the beginning of Ep 20 after Haw yi saved the Bureau of Weaponry and collapsed outside, the King was letting ' the cat out of the bag'.
The royal physician for a mere sulfur technician?

Hwa Yi is seen important to Gwanhaegun, after all Hwa Yi is the gunpowder expert (jang in,장인,匠人)

Well after watching ep 20 I kind of understand why GW let KJS live but it's a very dangerous move even though he could kill him at anytime GW wants to kill his power and his gain his power attach to the Ming court it's a good move very bold but highly dangerous anytime you have the cat cornered he will come out fighting stronger them before so let's see if GW will be able to weaken him.. I think Iw will take over just to gain the princess to be his wife Jw lags to much and he will loose even if Iw have to kill his own friend to get what he wants he will stop at nothing to accomplish this..

@valsava  What upper hand did the King have and use to suppress Kang Joo Seon before letting him walk out of the palace?

@SMP567, It's all related to the incident regarding the princess and her brother but if he kill him he would have to kill his his hit woman and hit man..  It's revealing everybody involved in the scandalous plot but KJS could only be exiled if this happens he just set the stage in motion it was the others that did the killing for him..

This may have already been said so forgive me if I'm repeating someone, regarding Court Lady Kim (Hit Woman), is it possible she's just a relative from his mother's side of the family.  His mother was Lady Kim (Gongbin), a concubine (according to the wikipedia page regarding the actual Gwanghaegun).

If you think that Kim Gae Shi & Yi Yi Cheom goes on a "killing spree" on Gwanghaegun relative/threat, Injo personally did his that surpasses even them put together

Injo kills his Crown Prince Sohyeon (possible of filicide as it was condone in Confucian moral standard in the case of a disobedient son).

Injo resentment toward his Crown Prince Sohyeon family especially the Crown Princess Minhoe of Gang was exacerbate by his favourite Consort Jo Gwi In (Injo version of Kim Gae Shi)

Crown Princess Minhoe of Gang was sentence to death by poison on falsified charges that she attempt to poison Injo in his food

Injo almost exterminated Crown Princess Minhoe of Gang family

Injo sent her 4 brothers to exile then later execute Crown Princess Minhoe of Gang mother & her 2 brothers & choose to eliminate Crown Princess Minhoe of Gang's 3 sons with Crown Prince Sohyeon (Injo own grandsons), first through exile later sentence to death by poison, only the youngest son manage to survive the ordeal

When reading Injo reign.....you only have factional politics, intrusion of domestic political consideration into military strategies (2 Manchu Invasion, Yi Gwal uprising), a disastrous adoption of a hostile foreign policies towards the Manchu, just when the Manchu was at the height of they "might" (really asking for trouble),

Injo to be bestowed "In" (仁  which means benevolence) to his temple name is really indeed a joke

Kim is a very common surname in Korea

There is a saying in Korea, if you throw a stone off Namsan, you bound to hit a person with the surname Kim or Yi (Lee)
