All the articles about the actor playing Soo, Yoon Hyun-min, say “former baseball player…” and I wonder how many extra female fans his team had because of all his pretty. Just the idea of watching him crouch and swing makes me cry and swoon.

(I am not even thinking about how big his bat is, either.) (Ooops, just did.)

After reviewing some of the wardrobe choices for him, especially my absolute favorite below, a baseball connection makes sense.

Singer Jang Nara returns to the spotlight in March with the new digital single "I Can Only Think of You".The single will also contain the duet "It Was You", recorded with fellow singer and actor Alex."The song and music video are currently being edited and as soon as that's done the single will be released sometime in March", a representative from Jang's agency said.The 30-year old singer-turned-actress shot the video for the single at a ranch in Daegwallyeong, Gangwon. She handpicked the male lead, who is played by baseball player turned musical theater actorYoon Hyeon-min.Jang's new album is her first in more than three years. Her agency also said that this year, Jang will be more active in Korea rather than in China, where she has spent a significant amount of time as a singer and actress until now.Jang made her debut in Korea in 2001. “새는 알을 깨고 나온다. 알은 곧 세계이다. 태어나려고 하는 자는 또 하나의 세계를 파괴하지 않으면 안 된다” 소설 <데미안>의 구절이다. 여기, 알을 깨고 또 하나의 세계에 나온 배우가 있다. 순간의 선택은 평생을 좌우하고, 인생에는 세 번의 기회가 찾아온다고 했던가. 오랫동안 ‘이 길’ 밖에 없다고 믿었던 그에게 흔들림이 찾아왔고, 그는 그렇게 ‘알’을 깨고 나와 새로운 세상을 선택했다. 모두가 말렸고, 모두가 반대했던 그 선택은 새로운 ‘나’와의 만남을 선물했다.

연극 <트라이앵글> 첫 공연을 앞두고 긴장보다는 잔뜩 신난 표정을 짓고 있는 그를 보고 있자니 연기가 체질이라는 생각이 든다. 내일이 첫 공연이라며 들 떠 있는 그에게 선천적으로 밝은 기운이 가득했다. 이렇게 좋아하는 연기를 왜 이제야 시작한걸까. 남자가 두 시간 가까이 수다(?)를 떨기란 쉽지 않은 일인데, 윤현민은 인터뷰 내내 밝은 미소와 유쾌한 수다로 웃음을 자아냈다.

아무래도 야구 이야기를 빼놓을 수 없으니 먼저 시작해보자. 야구선수 하다가 뮤지컬을 보고 배우가 되겠다고 생각했다고
일반인들도 직장 생활하면 사직서를 항상 양복 안에 갖고 다닌다고 하잖아요. 저도 그랬어요. 유니폼 안에 항상 사직서를 갖고 다니는 기분이었어요. 그런데 이걸 관두면 할 수 있는 게 없으니까 못 그만 두고 있었던 거죠. 돈 벌게 없으니까. 그렇게 고민하던 찰나에 어느 날 친구가 공연 보러 가자고 하더라고요. 그 때 본 게 <김종욱 찾기>였어요. 태어나서 처음으로 공연을 본 건데 굉장히 멋있더라고요. 무대에서 땀 흘리며 연기하고, 울고, 사랑하는 모습이 너무 멋있었어요. ‘이거다’ 싶었죠. 그 계기 때문에 관둘 수 있었어요.

야구선수로서 미래와 비전이 보이지 않았나
어린 나이에 왜 그런 생각을 했는지 모르겠는데 야구로는 내가 롱런할 수 없겠다는 생각이 들었어요. 만약 그 때가 20대 후반이었다면 전 야구를 관두지 못했을 거예요. 어렸었고, 욱했었고, 두려움도 없었기 때문에 관둘 수 있었어요. 어영부영할 바에는 그냥 차라리 빨리 다른 길을 찾아봐야겠다고 생각했죠.

막상 야구를 그만두고 배우의 길을 하겠다고 했을 때 막막했을 것 같다. 연줄도, 인맥도 없는 상황에서 배우를 시작한다는 게 쉽지 않은 일이다
어휴. 말도 마세요. 그래서 지금 나이에 그만두라고 하면 못해요.(웃음) 말 그대로 무(無)에서 시작했어요. 무에서 유로 만들어 가야 했죠. 막상 배우가 되려고 하니 뭐부터 해야 될지 막막하더라고요. 그래서 연극영화과 다니는 친구들한테 물어봤죠. 뭐부터 해야 되냐고. 친구들이 연기 학원부터 다니래요. 부모님한테 야구 관뒀다고 말도 못하고 아침에 운동하러 간다하고 나와서 연기 학원을 다녔죠. 그런데 두 달 정도 그러다가 결국 걸렸어요. 세금 정산하다가 딱 걸린 거죠. 수입이 없으니까.(웃음) 학원비 벌기 위해 선술집 아르바이트도 하고, 이것저것 많이 했었어요.

그렇게 막막했던 상황에서 배우가 될 수 있게 연줄이 닿은 기회는 무엇이었나
지금 생각해봐도 제가 인복이 있어요. 야구선수 출신이다보니 연예인 야구팀 ‘플레이보이즈’와 연줄이 닿게 돼서 그 팀에 들어가게 됐어요. 출연 작품도 없고, 이제 연기 배우는 애가 장동건, 공형진, 김승우 같은 대선배들이 속한 팀에 들어간다는 게 솔직히 말도 안됐죠. 굉장한 프라이드와 전통이 있는 팀이거든요. 한 번 구경이나 오라고 해서 그 모임에 갔었는데 선배들이 저를 유심히 보더니 유니폼 맞추라고 하더라고요. 마스크가 우리 팀에 어울린다고.(웃음) 그렇게 그 팀에 들어가면서 인프라가 생겼죠. 무명의 신인 배우가 대스타들이 있는 집단에 들어간 건 지금 생각해도 말이 안돼요. 지금 4년 째 활동하고 있어요.(웃음)

몇 년 간 해보니 야구 관두고 연기하기 잘했다는 생각이 드나?
항상 힘듦의 연속이에요. 모니터해보면 연기도 너무 아쉽고. 그런데 짜릿한 순간이 있어요. 몰입해서 연기할 때. <무정도시>에서 죽는 장면 찍고 나서 얼마나 짜릿했는지 몰라요. 야구 관뒀을 때는 부모님한테 이게 무슨 불효일까 생각했는데 지금은 제가 나오는 공연 보면 행복해 하세요. 부모님이 좋아할 때도 야구 관두기 잘했다는 생각이 들죠.

야구선수 당시 몸무게가 90kg이였다고 들었는데, 혹독한 다이어트를 한 것인가
계약하고 나서 소속사에서 그러더라고요. 너 좀 빼야겠다고.(웃음) 제가 살이 많기 보다는 운동선수다보니 근육량이 너무 많았어요. 살을 빼는 것보다 근육을 빼야 했죠. 살은 운동하면 빠지는데 아무리 운동을 해도 근육은 절대 안 빠져요. 어떻게 뺄까 고민하다가 우연히 김명민 선배의 인터뷰를 봤어요. 루게릭병에 걸린 역할을 연기할 때 어떻게 근육량을 뺐냐고 물었더니 하루 종일 침대에서 누워 있었다고 하더라고요. 그래서 한 달 반 동안 시체처럼 누워 있었어요. 식단관리하면서 그렇게 살을, 아니 근육을 뺐죠.(웃음)

그렇게 어려운 근육 다이어트(?)까지 하다니. 정말 배우가 되고 싶었나보다
지푸라기라도 잡고 싶은 심정이었나 봐요. 그나마 할 줄 아는 게, 하고 싶은 게 배우 밖에 없는 것 같았거든요. 배우, 엄청 하고 싶었나 봐요.(웃음)

얼굴없는 신인, <무정도시> ‘수’를 만나다
윤현민의 존재는 JTBC 드라마 <무정도시>를 통해 알려졌다. 단역과 조연을 오가며 존재감이 없었던 그는 이 작품을 통해 대중들에게 확실한 눈도장을 찍었다. 박사아들(정경호 분)을 든든히 수호해주는 ‘의리파’ 친구로 등장한 그는 ‘진정~’이라는 유행어와 함께 배우 인생의 터닝 포인트를 만나게 됐다.

<무정도시> 통해 윤현민의 존재를 대중들이 많이 알게 됐다. 남다른 애정이 있는 작품일 것 같다
처음에는 ‘수’ 보다는 비중이 없는 작은 역할로 오디션을 봤었어요. 그런데 어느 날 저한테 ‘수’ 대사를 읽어보라고 하더라고요. 그렇게 캐스팅이 됐죠. 비중있는 역할이 처음이다 보니까 너무 힘들었어요. 부담과 걱정도 많았고. 최대한 해는 안 끼치겠다는 각오였죠. 감독님께도 절대 욕먹지 않게 하겠다고 말했어요. 끝나고 반응이 나쁘지 않아서 다행이었죠.

<무정도시>가 몰입도, 스토리, 연출 면에서 굉장한 호평을 받았다. 많은 마니아층을 형성하기도 했다
경호 형이랑 그런 얘기 했었어요. 이런 작품을 우리가 할 수 있어서 너무 좋다고. 감독님이랑 술자리 가지면서도 너무 좋다는 말을 자주 했고요. 단 한 가지 아쉬운 건 시청률이죠. 그래서 우리끼리 그랬어요. 다음에는 공중파 드라마에서 다시 만나서 ‘사고’ 한 번 제대로 치자고.(웃음)

“김현중과 라이벌? 잘생겨 보이는 건 포기했죠”

올해 윤현민이 또 다시 선보이는 액션은 바로 KBS-2TV <감격시대 : 투신의 탄생>이다. 이번엔 주인공의 수호천사가 아닌, 라이벌 구도를 이루며 피할 수 없는 전쟁을 하게 된다. 그가 맡은 ‘아오끼’는 냉철한 원칙주의자인 청년 장교 역할로, 일국회 회장 덴카이(김갑수 분)의 양자이자, 데쿠치 가야(임수향 분)를 향한 지고지순한 사랑을 펼치는 인물이다.

<무정도시>에 이어 또 느와르다. 이러다 액션 전문 배우 되는 거 아닌가(웃음)
그러게요. 제가 액션을 잘하게 보이나 봐요.(웃음) 운동선수 출신이다 보니 그런 선입견이 생겨서 그런가. 다행히 이 작품은 액션보다는 표정으로 연기하는 신이 더 많아요. 맨주먹보다는 검술을 주로 쓰거든요. 한 달 넘게 액션 스쿨 다니면서 검술 연습을 했어요. 또 역할이 장교다보니 총 쏘는 것도 연습했고요. 총 쏘는 모습이 간지(?)가 나야 되잖아요.(웃음)

강한 옴므파탈 이미지로 캐릭터가 굳어지는 것에 대한 염려는 없나
오히려 지금 생각하는 건 차라리 굳어질 거면 확실하게 굳어졌으면 좋겠어요. 제대로 된 느와르, 제대로 된 액션을 보여준 다음에 또 다른 장르에 도전하자는 각오죠. 이미지가 굳어지면 다른 장르를 했을 때 변신의 폭이 크잖아요. 대중들에게 강한 임팩트를 줄 수 있을 것 같아요. ‘어? 쟤가 저런 연기도 할 줄 아네?’ 그런 거요. 나중에는 정통 멜로 한 번 해서 로맨스의 끝을 보여주겠습니다.(웃음)

냉철한 원칙주의자 역할이다. 자유분방한 성격이었던 수와는 상반된 캐릭터다
아오끼는 원칙주의자고 야망이 큰 사람이에요. 야망을 위해 거슬리는 게 있으면 밟아버리는 성격이죠. 아버지와의 관계도 얽혀 있고요. 그래서 수 보다는 더 디테일하게 연기해야 할 것 같아요. 수는 자신의 생각을 툭툭 내뱉는 성격이었다면 아오끼는 자신의 생각을 숨기고 표정에 드러내지 않는 스타일이거든요. 감정의 디테일이 살아야 하죠.

정경호에 김현중까지, 막강한 꽃미남들이 매번 상대역으로 붙는다. 부담스럽지는 않나? 
어떻게 하는 것마다 그런지 모르겠어요. 왜 다들 그렇게 잘 생겨갖고.(웃음) 그런데 좋은 건 상대 역이 잘생기다보니까 오히려 저는 외모에 대해 생각을 안 하게 되더라고요. 잘생겨 보여야겠다, 멋있어보여야겠다 이런 건 포기하고 연기에 집중할 수 있어서 좋아요.

김현중과 라이벌로 나오게 됐다. 옆에서 지켜 본 김현중은 어땠나
잠깐 대화 나눴는데도 굉장히 남성적이에요. 이 역할 하고나면 ‘대박’나겠다는 생각 들더라고요. 대본 리딩을 할 때도 본인의 성향이 나와요. 굉장히 상남자거든요. 그래서 ‘신정태’ 역할이 너무 잘 어울려요. 방영되고 나면 김현중의 재발견이라는 말 들을 것 같아요.

꼭 닮고 싶은 존경하는 배우는 누구인가
최민식 선배님이요. 다들 무서울 거라고 생각하는데 실제로 만나보면 진짜 좋으신 분이에요. 배우가 되려면 이 정도까지 해야 되나 할 정도로 철저해요. 같이 술을 마시면서 이야기 나눠보면 배우가 아닌 예술가 느낌이 들어요.

앞으로 배우로서의 목표가 있다면 
연기 잘하고 싶은 건 배우로서 당연한 거고, 올해 저의 현실적인 목표는 회사에 얘기 했었어요. 올해는 주인공 꼭 한 번 해봐야겠다고. 처음에는 역량도 안 되고, 1회부터 드라마를 쭉 이끌어 갈 엄두가 안 난다고 생각했었는데 주인공을 꼭 해봐야겠다는 생각이 들더라고요. 그래야 한 걸음, 한 걸음 앞으로 나갈 수 있을 것 같아요. 그게 저의 소기의 목표입니다.

Yoon Hyeon-min, chic and rough in "Heartless City"

Former baseball player turned actor Yoon Hyeon-min is in the spotlight.

Yoon Hyeon-min takes on the role of Kim Hyeon-soo, the right hand man to Jeong Si-hyeon (Jeong Kyeong-ho) in the JTBC drama "Heartless City".

Unlike a drug dealer, Yoon puts on a dandy look and the care-free character blends in well with him even making him look sexy.

Yoon Hyeon-min is a former baseball player turned actor. He was active in Han Hwa and Doosan for most of his early 20s and decided to act. He's been working on his base with theater and starred in "Finding Mr. Destiny" and "Bachelor's Vegetable Store".
