Park Seo-joon Is the Perfect Casting for Prince Yan

Finding the perfect actor to embody a character and truly capture their essence is quite a skill, and not every studio gets it right. The casting director of The Marvels nailed it, however, with their choice of the incredibly talented South Korean actor to bring the enigmatic Prince Yan of Aladna to life. Park Seo-joon has an impressive track record of successful roles that have really allowed him to showcase his incredible talent and versatility. From his breakout role in the Korean drama Dream High to his leading roles in popular series like What's Wrong with Secretary Kim and Itaewon Class, he has consistently impressed audiences by bringing complex characters to life. Park Seo-joon's magnetic personality, subtle expressions, and ability to convey a wide range of emotions make him the perfect choice to portray the depth of Prince Yan's mysterious nature.

@yaya1241  thanks for sharing this. "The Marvels" is making history, and not in a good way: its estimated $47 million North American take over the weekend marks the lowest debut ever for a movie from Disney's normally money-cranking Marvel Cinematic Universe. Analyst David A. Gross said, "This opening is an unprecedented Marvel box office collapse."  Is this a clear signal of moviegoers' superhero fatigue after so many successful blockbusters? I guess the factors why it's hurting the film in the theaters are the growth of streaming services now and the recently ended actors' strike ("Marvels" stars were unable to do promotional work).   :heart2:

*** The film “The Marvels” has topped the weekly box office in South Korea.  The movie was released in South Korea on Nov. 8, selling 91,538 tickets and grossing $681,510 on opening day, according to the Korean Film Council (KOFIC), which tracks box office receipts. Since its opening up to Nov. 12, “The Marvels” is the No. 1 film in South Korea based on total daily admissions. The film dominated the weekend box office in South Korea from Nov. 10 to 12 to emerge as No. 1.   :kicks:

*** Despite playing a small role and with short screen time, Park Seo-joon’s performance in "The Marvels" already made me feel proud. The movie is currently screened in theaters. It is very impressive that a Korean actor was cast to appear in an MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) film. Park Seo-joon appears in the film 55 minutes after the opening. In that scene, Prince Yan sings while holding the hand of his lover Carol Danvers as they reunite after a long time. Making a completely new transformation from the characters in his previous works, Park Seo-joon amazed me with his visual while dancing and singing. Despite some ridiculous criticism, “The Marvels” is still considered a meaningful challenge and a significant leap forward in Park Seo-joon’s acting career.   :emmm:

*** A review regarding the movie “The Marvels” is gaining attention. The reviewer finds “The Marvels” to be a complete failure, describing it as a chaotic and incomprehensible film, unlike any previous Marvel movie. While praising Brie Larson’s portrayal of Captain Marvel and Iman Vellani’s performance as Ms. Marvel, the lack of a compelling origin story for the heroes is criticized. The story lacks the depth and coherence found in previous Marvel films, and the action sequences are deemed confusing and cluttered. The reviewer added, "I watched Park Seo-joon’s ‘The Marvels’, I’m sorry I couldn’t protect you”.   :coolshades:

‘Gyeongseong Creature’ to lead year-end, New Year drama releases

20231112000075_0.jpg

Netflix Korea on Sunday confirmed the premiere of the highly anticipated horror thriller, “Gyeongseong Creature,” in December.

The series will be split into two different parts, with the first seven episodes being presented as “Gyeongseong Creature Part 1,” and the remaining three episodes scheduled to be released Jan. 5.

With a star-studded lineup in terms of both its creators and cast, the thriller-action series is regarded as one of the year's must-see projects.

Helmed by director Jung Dong-yoon, who was behind the 2019 mega-hit Korean TV drama “Hot Stove League,” and “Dr. Romantic” (2016-2023) screenwriter Kang Eun-kyung, “Gyeongseong Creature” takes viewers back to the spring of 1945, one of South Korea’s darkest hours.

Set during the Japanese colonial period, the thriller series tells the stories of two young individuals fighting to survive against bizarre creatures born out of human greed.

Actor Park Seo-joon, who rose to stardom with “Fight for My Way” (2017), “What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim” (2018), “Itaewon Class” (2020) and most recently "The Marvels" released last week, plays a wealthy entrepreneur, Jang Tae-sang.

Though Tae-sang is a man who prioritizes money above all else, his principles are called into question after meeting Yoon Chae-ok, a sleuth renowned for her ability to track down anyone, even those who are dead.

Actress Han So-hee, who made her Netflix debut with “My Name” in 2021, stars as Chae-ok in “Gyeongseong Creature.”

Local drama fans shared their excitement about seeing two of their beloved stars perform together for the first time.

Veteran actors, including Kim Hae-sook of “Hospital Playlist” (2020), Claudia Kim of “Avengers: Age of Ultron” (2015) and “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” (2018), Cho Han-cheul of “Reborn Rich” (2022) and “Squid Game” star Wi Ha-jun, will co-star in the show, unleashing a series of surreal monster stories set in Seoul in 1945.

Unlike many other Netflix projects, for which a plan to expand the series is made after the release of the original, "Gyeongseong Creature" announced the launch of the series' second season in November 2022, well ahead of the premiere of the first season, evidence of the streaming service's confidence in the show.

“Gyeongseong Creature Part 1” will be released on Dec. 22.

*** "Gyeongseong Creature" is a drama with so much hype. I’ll be fully on board. It's been quite a long while since his last drama. I guess that was "Itaewon Class" yet. Park Seo Joon is a successful and well-liked businessman from his character description, but in the teaser he’s looking battle weary and broken by what he witnesses. He points his rifle on a foe we can’t see. We'll find out soon! Han So-hee does the same, too. The creepiness factor is  just right and I'm loving it. I want to know what the creatures crime is. And this seems like a new adventure in cutting up dramas into seasons and parts. NOT liking the trend of "cut up dramas," though! Hope it's as good. Fingers crossed and all that. Few K-dramas in the supernatural/horror action genre can pull off what KINGDOM pulled off. But, let's see how this one does.   :heart3:

Netflix series 'Gyeongseong Creature' to debut Dec. 22

Netflix’s much-anticipated Korean original series “Gyeongseong Creature” will debut on Dec. 22.

The streaming service announced that the series will premiere the first seven episodes of its first season next month and the second part of the season (episodes 8 to 10), on Jan. 5, unveiling a teaser poster and trailer, Sunday.

The horror action series revolves around a man and a woman fighting for survival against monsters in the grim era back in 1945. Jang Tae-sang (Park Seo-joon) is a well-off businessman in the neighborhood, who has a good sense of humor and insight that makes him the best informant in the town.

Having learned to adapt and survive, Yoon Chae-ok (Han So-hee) finds missing people for a living. She comes back to Gyeongseong, the Japanese-era name for Seoul, to find her mother who disappeared 10 years ago and crosses paths with Jang. When they follow traces of a mysterious serial murderer, they face shocking secrets and struggle to survive.

The 10-part series is directed by Jung Dong-yoon, who is known for SBS' 2019 hit sports series "Hot Stove League" and the 2014 drama series "What Happens to My Family?" and is written by scriptwriter Kang Eun-kyung, who penned the 2016 hit medical series "Dr. Romantic."

This Is How Much 'The Marvels' Has to Gross to Break Even

THE BIG PICTURE

  •  The Marvels had a disappointing opening weekend, earning only $110 million globally, compared to Captain Marvel's $455 million in 2019.
  •  Recent Marvel films like Spider-Man: No Way Home and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness have been successful, but others like Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania have underperformed.
  •  With a reported budget of $275 million, The Marvels faces a steep climb to profitability and will face tough competition from upcoming films like Napoleon and The Hunger Games, potentially losing premium screens to the latter.

The Marvels, the embattled new release from Disney and Marvel Studios is — undeservedly — heading to the scrap heap of history following a record-breaking low opening weekend for a Marvel Cinematic Universe picture. The Marvels had its domestic debut with a franchise-record low of $47 million, supplemented by an additional $63 million from international markets, resulting in a combined global opening of $110 million. The underachievement certainly wasn't aided by the SAG-AFTRA strike, with stars like Brie Larson and Iman Vellani only able to start promoting the film the day before it was due for release.

This figure is notably less than the hugely impressive $455 million achieved by Captain Marvel in its global debut in 2019. The character's arrival was teased in the post-credits sting of Avengers: Infinity War, and as a result, Captain Marvel benefited from heightened anticipation for Avengers: Endgame, ultimately securing a domestic lifetime gross of $426 million and a global total of $1.1 billion.

But it isn't 2019 anymore. Spider-Man: No Way Home, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 achieved impressive box office success in the post-pandemic era. However, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania from this year and Thor: Love and Thunder from last year were perceived as under-performing in comparison. And not just at the box office, but with critics too. The Marvels currently sits at a 62% score on aggregator Rotten Tomatoes and was awarded a franchise-low B CinemaScore from opening day audiences.

How Much Money Will 'The Marvels' Lose?
According to Matthew Belloni of Puck, the multiplier attached to the reported $275 million budget of the film gives the studio and the movie a metaphorical mountain to climb. A budget that high, combined with the shared takings of exhibitors and the costs of press and advertising — likely to be higher given there was no viral or impromptu marketing that could take place due to its stars being excluded — means the film will need to earn around $700 million if it's to squeeze into profitability.

And given the competition coming soon, in the form of Ridley Scott's Napoleon in two weeks as well as The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbird and Snakes. The Marvels is set to lose all of its premium large format screens such as IMAX to The Hunger Games, which will hurt the bottom line even more. At this rate, Marvel will need more than the Time Stone to fix this.

*** The poster of "Gyeongseong Creature" captures the grim moment of the dark era, featuring armed individuals with masks and protective gears lined up to guard the cart in the center of a hospital hall. *** The poster of "Gyeongseong Creature"  soft design and interior visuals contribute to its stressful ambiance. The poster fits right into the period-horror-themed drama. The text at the top of the poster indicates the time setting: "Spring of 1945." Just below it, the caption reads, "There were humans and creatures in a hospital of Gyeongseong." The color scheme enhances the eerie undertone, perfectly for the vintage horror genre. It effectively intensifies the sense of terror, leaving a lingering impression that the monsters. Overall, the poster leaves you with an unsettling feeling making you scared with anxiety while anticipating what's coming next. Park Seo Joon shares his thoughts on acting, his ideal vacation and what advice he’d give his 18 year-old self

It’s been almost a month since Park Seo Joon met his Filo fans again with a fun meet made in partnership with IAm Worldwide and Wilbros Live.

Before his big event at the Big Dome, he met the members of the media for a short press conference hosted by the lovely Sam Oh.

Dashing in a cream-colored coordinated outfit, he appeared in the venue with a shy smile yet enough to bring everyone in attendance melt in kilig! His presence screams SUPERSTAR, a MARVEL-ous one that is. He granted a quick photo time before answering selected questions from the press.

IMG_8143.jpg?resize=576%2C1024&ssl=1 IMG_8139.jpg?resize=578%2C1024&ssl=1 IMG_8144.jpg?resize=576%2C1024&ssl=1

“It’s been a while and I’m glad to be able to greet you once again. This is Park Seo Joon.”

He’s a man of few words (possibly still feeling overwhelmed in front a big crowd) but his charm can be felt in every corner of the room.

He talked about a myriad of things in a short span of time, appreciating his fans (and how he loves seizing opportunities to meet them), his memorable trip to Cebu a few years back (Yes, he had probably tasted Lechon Cebu before!) and how acting still remains a top priority for him.

ON PURSUING OTHER CREATIVE ENDEAVOURS ASIDE FROM ACTING

“The thing that I love the most doing and I’m happy the most doing is acting. So at the moment, I haven’t thought about trying other endeavors yet.” He is passionate with his craft and his notable roles from the projects he starred in, can speak on how effective of an actor he is. With a Hollywood film under his portfolio now, we can expect bigger things to come from Park Seo Joon.

ON WHAT MESSAGE HE’D LIKE TO GIVE TO HIS 18 YEAR OLD SELF

This question made him stop and ponder for a while, perhaps making him look back on how life is before and how it has immensely changed since then.

“If I would remember myself during those years, I was having a very hard time because I really had a vague future. But if I have a chance to give an advice to my 18yo self, I would love to say that if you just do your best, everything will workout. However, even though everything will workout, I hope you will never lose your own self.”

It was one of those questions that revealed how profound he is in dealing with his success, the one he earned by giving his best and the one he never once thought of having. He’s very admirable for saying this, giving another reason to love him more.

ON HIS IDEAL VACATION

For most of us, it is having a jampacked itinerary of must-do’s and must visit spots but for Park Seo Joon, the most important vacation is the one that allows a person to empty his/her mind. With his very busy schedule, enjoying a vacation is a luxury for him.

“It will be best for me to have a vacation where I get to empty my mind and have some free time for myself.”

He also shared during the interview that he got to visit Cebu a few years back. Hope he decides to come back again soon (and perhaps bring the whole Wooga Squad with him?)

His time with the press was short and sweet but he shared his profound thoughts by giving simple yet straightforward replies to the questions thrown at him. He’s grateful for the amount of support from his Filipino fans and extends his huge thanks to IAm Worldwide for creating the opportunity to get closer to them once again.

Who Is Park Seo-joon, a.k.a. Prince Yan from 'The Marvels'?
The K-drama star is making his Hollywood debut in the MCU's latest flick

The MCU's sequel to 2019's Captain Marvel is finally out in theaters, bringing together the titular hero played by Brie Larson and two fan-favorites from Marvel's Disney+ shows—Iman Vellani's Ms Marvel and Teyonah Parris's Monica Rambeau—in the franchise's first-ever all-female superhero team-up. In addition to the leading trio of superheroes, Korean drama fans have also been excited to see a major K-drama actor to make his U.S. film debut. As details of the film's plot emerged closer to its November 10 release, fans deduced that Park Seo-joon would play supporting character Prince Yan, who shares a connection to Carol Danvers and even appears in a musical number in the action flick.

Though American audiences may not be familiar with Park Seo-joon, the acclaimed actor is a superstar in his native South Korea, and he's already appeared in an Oscar-winning film. If The Marvels is the first time you're seeing him, read on to learn more about the actor.

He's a leading Korean actor and Chanel ambassador.

Park was born on December 16, 1988, and made his debut as an actor in 2011, appearing in Bang Yong-guk's music video "I Remember." He's gone on to star in several hit K-dramas including A Witch's Love; Kill Me, Heal Me; She Was Pretty; Hwarang: The Poet Warrior Youth, Fight for My Way, What's Wrong with Secretary Kim?, and Itaewon Class. The Marvels is his first major Hollywood film. He's next set to star in the Netflix action drama Gyeonseong Creature, as well as the dystopian drama film Concrete Utopia—which Deadline reports has been selected as South Korea's entry for the Best International Feature Film category for the 2024 Oscars .

In addition to his acting work, Park has served as an ambassador of Chanel Beauty for the past few years, making appearances at several of the fashion house's events. He has also worked as a singer, contributing several songs to soundtracks earlier in his career.

You may already know him from an Oscar-winning film.

Though K-drama fans have known of Park for years, U.S. movie fans likely first met him through his brief role in Bong Joon-ho's Oscar-winning movie Parasite. Park appeared at the beginning of the film as Min-hyuk, the rich family friend who told Ki-woo (Choi Woo-shik) about the tutoring job for the wealthy Park family, setting off the wild plot. Though he didn't join the Parasite cast on the U.S. awards show circuit, he did follow along on Instagram, where he shared sweet posts gushing over his co-stars.

He was cast in 'The Marvels' because of his performance in 'Itaewon Class.'

During an press conference earlier this month, The Marvels director Nia DeCosta revealed how she ended up casting Park in the film. Per The Korea Herald, she told the outlet that during the pandemic lockdowns, she rediscovered her love of K-dramas thanks to Park's 2020 drama Itaewon Class (which is available to stream on Netflix).

“I was really into Korean dramas, films and K-pop when I was younger at 17, 18, and I just fell in love with this Korean pop culture. I watched a lot of variety shows as well,“ she said. “I hadn’t watched many Korean dramas in years, but it was during the pandemic that I watched Itaewon Class. Months after watching that drama, I got this job [to direct The Marvels] and I thought Prince Yan’s character really fits him. So we reached out to see if it worked, and it did.”

She added of Park, “He is a great actor with great energy and he is very funny. Everyone fell in love with him on set...His screen time is short, but he is a very impactful character throughout the storyline.”

In a 2022 The Guardian interview, Park said of the Marvel gig, “When I first heard that the Marvel Cinematic Universe wanted to speak with me, I couldn’t believe it. I actually couldn’t believe it.” He added, “I’m not someone who has a fear of challenges, but whether I am filming in South Korea or abroad, everything is a challenge for me. So, I did feel some nerves at first. But everyone was so helpful and welcoming that I was able to find my feet really quickly.”

He's part of a famous friend squad with BTS's V.

Outside of his work in the drama world, Park is also known for his friendship with one of the members of the biggest pop group in the world. He's part of the "Wooga Squad," a famous group of besties that also includes actors Choi Woo-shik and Park Hyung-sik, and rapper and producer Peakboy. Seo-joon met V and Hyung-sik when they acted in the 2016 drama Hwarang: The Poet Warrior Youth, and he went on to introduce the two to Choi and Peakboy, with whom he was already friends. After years of sharing Instagram posts and YouTube vlogs from their friend trips, the fivesome immortalized their squad in the Disney+ reality show In the Soop: Friendcation.

In addition to In the Soop: Friendcation, Park Seo-joon, V, and Choi Woo-shik also appeared on another Korean variety show together. Park had been a long-running member of the show Youn's Kitchen, where a group of actors operate a Korean restaurant in a small town. He first starred in the Canary Islands-based Youn's Kitchen 2—alongside Lee Seo-jin, Jung Yu-mi, and Oscar-winner Youn Yuh-jung—and later returned for the spinoff Youn's Stay, where Choi joined the cast as they ran a traditional Korean guesthouse. This year, he, Lee, Jung, Choi, and V hosted the spin-off Jinny's Kitchen, where they opened a Korean street food restaurant in Bacalar, Mexico. (Jinny's Kitchen is currently available to stream on Prime Video.)
