Call to action: Open investigation into the Incheon Asian Games Organizing Committee’s unilateral exclusion of JYJ from Incheon Asian Games opening ceremony

The Asian Games is the most prestigious games organized by the Olympic Council of Asia, bringing together over 10,000 athletes, team officials, and technical delegates from 45 nations every four years. The 2014 Asian Games will be held in the city of Incheon, South Korea this coming September. To promote the games across Asia, the IAGOC appointed Korean superstars JYJ as honorary ambassadors to the 2014 Incheon Asian Games last February 20, 2013. In the words of the IAGOC, “we appointed JYJ as the honorary ambassador, whose popularity is well recognized all around the Asia, to encourage the rest of the Asia to know more about the 2014 Incheon Asian Games.” Fulfilling their roles for one and a half years, JYJ performed extensive promotional activities for the Incheon Asian Games, such as travelling to Guangzhou, China and Hanoi, Vietnam to put on promotional showcases. They even sang the Games’ official theme song “ONLY ONE”, being the face of the Games on promotional advertisements throughout Asia. They have likewise filmed multiple televised commercials to better promote the upcoming Games.

On July 1, 2014, however, JYJ was neither invited nor informed of the press conference that the IAGOC held, and were unilaterally dropped from the opening and closing ceremonies’ list of performers through press releases, despite several attempts by JYJ’s management C-JeS Entertainment to clarify the matter with the Committee as the Service Contract specifically included performance by JYJ on the opening and closing ceremonies. Quite surprisingly, this incident came about after it was recently announced that SM Entertainment, JYJ’s previous management company, was named a sponsor for the Incheon 2014 Asian Paralympic Games. A boyband from SM Entertainment, who had no previous connection to the Incheon Asian Games and not once promoted it will instead be performing a pop-song of their own at the opening and closing ceremonies and also appeared at the press conference in lieu of JYJ. On the other hand, JYJ, the Games’ honorary ambassadors, are barred from performing the official theme song of the Incheon Asian Games, ‘Only One’, which they sang and promoted specifically for the Incheon Asian Games.

On top of this, the IAGOC has been selling opening ceremony tickets since December, 2013 at the sky-high price of 1 Million Korean Won, or approximately $900 USD, using JYJ’s name and saying that JYJ will perform during the opening ceremony. Since JYJ are the official ambassadors, it is reasonable for anyone buying tickets to opening ceremony to expect that they would be performing. As JYJ are limited in their promotional activities due to an invisible hand blocking them, fans of JYJ still bought these tickets and booked international flights to Incheon, hoping to catch a glimpse of JYJ on a fair stage. This now has become impossible as the IAGOC’s anomalous acts in the form of a shameless and fraudulent bait-and-switch scheme. For more than a year, the Committee has made over four billion Asians believe that JYJ is the face of the 2014 Incheon Asian Games through their advertisements and roadshows which JYJ participated in. Yet, they did not bother to mention the name JYJ at the press conference and have dropped JYJ from the list of performers during the ceremonies. Instead, another boyband suddenly appeared at the press conference and in the advertisements instead of JYJ. As of the writing of this petition letter, the official tour agency of the IAGOC which is responsible for selling tour packages to foreigners, is still selling opening ceremony tickets and tour packages using JYJ’s name and thereby continuing to knowingly mislead fans and the public.

The actions of the IAGOC have drawn worldwide criticism from spectators to journalists, tarnishing the reputation of the Asian Games and bringing concern regarding whether or not the IAGOC is capable of holding a fair competition for athletes who have trained all their lives for this one stage. If a mere corporate donation caused the IAGOC to drop their honorary ambassadors in such a disgraceful and public manner, we, the spectators and consumers of the Incheon Asian Games, cannot trust them to conduct fair play for athletes during the Games.

We join JYJ’s management in its plea to IAGOC to keep the promise with their Honorary Ambassadors JYJ. We also believe that the 2014 Incheon Asian Games Committee as well as the Olympic Council of Asia are organized to fulfill the public interest, which is based upon loyalty and trust.

We call upon the Olympic Council of Asia to perform an open investigation into the IAGOC’s actions to ensure an untainted Asian Games and bring justice and fair play to performers and athletes consistent with the spirit of the Games themselves.

These films testify just how far Korean cinema has come.

Summer is fast approaching, but this year is set to be a cool one as three local flicks take on the high seas. From a historical account to a period comedy to a modern drama, these films, with their intricate sets and use of star power, are a testament to just how far Korean cinema has come.

Each movie featured detailed replicas of ships, which were placed on rotating structures simulating the movement of the ocean. And as well as the plight of filming on water, all three features had their own obstacles. But only time will tell if the budget and effort invested were worth it.

“Haemoo” (Sea Fog)

Critics are expecting big things from “Haemoo,” which is directed by Shim Sung-bo, co-writer of Bong Joon-ho’s “Memories of Murder.” With Shim at the helm this time and Bong as the producer, the film raised eyebrows when K-pop star, JYJ’s Park Yu-chun, was cast as one of the main characters.

The plot centers on a group of down-on-their-luck fishermen. While out at sea, Captain Chul-ju (Kim Yoon-suk) and his six men find their ship overtaken by stowaways.

As a fog descends on them, against the backdrop of the deep blue sea, Shim plays on primal fears and testing human limits. The film boasts a talented lineup, including Kim Yoon-suk, Moon Sung-geun, Kim Sang-ho and ingenue Han Ye-ri.

The youngest sailor is Dong-sik, or JYJ’s Park. Taking the leap from TV dramas to the big screen, Park said he was honored to be a part of “Haemoo,” although he said it did come at a cost. “I got reprimanded by Kim Yoon-suk a lot,” he explained, “and I remember when he first saw us he said to me, ‘how am I going to work on a ship with you lot?’?”

Park also confessed to “being addicted to medicine for seasickness” while shooting. But over time, as he mastered the raging water, the singer won over his co-stars.

“I thought he’d be just this pretty boy, but then I got to know him and we decided that he’s a real man,” said Kim.

The film opens Aug. 13

Movie posters will never be the same after this.

Instead of the usual image poster Sea Fog has released a ′motion poster′ in video form.

The six posters that feature each crew member on board provide a peek into their individual emotions.

Kim Yoon Suk, Park Yoo Chun, Lee Hee Jun, Moon Sung Keun, Kim Sang Ho and Yoo Seung Mok all stare into the camera charismatically as a line of dialogue plays in the background.

Lee Jeon Ho, the man at the helm of these motion posters, commented, "It′s the first time such an attempt was made for a Korean film. We used a video camera used to shoot the movie instead of a regular still camera to capture every detailed expression of the actors. The actors expressed the change in emotions each character would have felt in the sea fog."

Sea Fog is about what six sailors have to go through after they agree to carry stowaways on their ship.

The film premieres on August 13.

JYJ’s Park Yoo Chun proved his ongoing popularity in Japan.

C-JeS Entertainment revealed, “Park Yoo Chun left for Japan in order to attend the fan meeting for drama I Miss You taking place on July 9 in Yokohama Arena. As soon as the news went out for Park Yoo Chun’s arrival in Japan, the fans began gathering at the Haneda Airport to welcome him and despite the hot weather about 1,000 fans made their way from different corners of Japan.’

Park Yoo Chun earned popularity not only in Korea but also in Japan by starring in drama I Miss You which ended in January. The drama DVD also ranked number one on the pre-order chart, proving its popularity.

His more recent drama Three Days was also received well by his fans in Japan, leading many to stream the drama again online.

Meanwhile, Park Yoo Chun will be meeting with 12,000 fans in Yokohama Arena on July 9.

JYJ’s Park Yoo Chun successfully wrapped up his fan meeting in Japan.

C-JeS Entertainment announced on July 10, “Park Yoo Chun successfully ended the fan meeting for drama I Miss You on July 9 in Yokohama Arena. The event, which had a five to one ticket competition, was carried out for three hours, receiving enthusiastic response from Park Yoo Chun’s Japanese fans.”

Park Yoo Chun appeared from behind the audience by riding in on a gondola, receiving passionate cheers from 15,000 fans. Stepping up to the stage by singing drama I Miss You’s theme song Magic Castle, Park Yoo Chun was welcomed by the fan who all held up yellow papers that read ‘Yoo Chun, we missed you!’

After thanking the fans for their passionate welcome, Park Yoo Chun shared stories behind filming I Miss You and during a corner called ‘Park Yoo Chun is this kind of person’ he shared more about himself with the fans.

Fans were also selected by raffles to act out five best scenes from I Miss You. After acting out the various scenes that ‘Han Jung Woo’ showed in the drama, such as ‘looking at each other under an umbrella,’ or ‘casting spell to erase memories you want to forget,’ Park Yoo Chun also presented signed DVD and CDs to the fans who didn’t get a chance to be on the stage with him.

Park Yoo Chun also spent time revealing his dating style by comparing himself to ‘Han Jung Woo,’ and later on a surprise video message by JYJ’s Kim Jae Joong and Kim Junsu was played, proving their friendship.

Park Yoo Chun said, “I was almost brought to tears as soon as I stepped up on the stage. I was nervous since it is my first time meeting the fans in Japan alone and I was worried that my Japanese is not good enough but I am happy to have spent such a great time.”

Park Yoo Chun wrapped up the fan meeting by singing drama Miss Ripley’s OST The Empty Space for You and one of his favorite songs Leaning on You. When the fans requested for an encore song, he sang his self-composed song Walking With Her in Spring, concluding the three hour fan meeting.

Meanwhile, having completed his fan meeting in Japan, Park Yoo Chun will be preparing to release JYJ’s second full length album at the end of July.
