Actress Kang Sora has opened up about her notorious 39,000 won (approximately $35 USD) H&M dress from the 2014 MAMA ceremony.

On December 23, the talented young actress met with reporters to talk about her recently completed drama “Misaeng.” At the interview, she was asked by one of the interviewers about how she came to choose the dress she wore to the MAMA ceremony.

She said, “I only found out about the price [of the dress] from the news articles. When I became the model for a soju brand, I had a shoot in different dresses for each month. That dress had the best reaction then. So I ended up wearing it [to the ceremony.] I normally try to wear clothes that are flattering for my figure.”

Previously, Kang Sora attended the 2014 MAMA ceremony as a presenter, pulling off an H&M dress that cost 39,000 won.

Kang Sora shared about the completely different charms of ZE:A′s Im Si Wan and Kang Ha Neul.

Having acted as ‘Ahn Young Yi’ in tvN’s Misaeng, Kang Sora revealed the actual personalities of Im Si Wan and Kang Ha Neul during the media day event that took place on December 23 in a café in Yonsan-gu.

Kang Sora previously said during the press conference of Misaeng on October 6, “Jang Geu Rae (Im Si Wan) has an unexpected charm and Jang Baek Gi (Kang Ha Neul) seems tough but is soft on the inside,” adding, “Jang Geu Rae seems to be naïve but he is talented and it seems like he is serious but he actually has a playful side. He has that kind of double-sidedness. In the case of Jang Baek Gi, I feel a bit more maternal toward him.”

On this day, Kang Sora revealed what she thinks of Im Si Wan and Kang Ha Neul after working with them for two months. Kang Sora said, “Both (Im Si Wan and Kang Ha Neul) are not like (how I imagined them to be during the press conference),” bringing out laughter.

Kang Sora then said, “I didn’t get Kang Ha Neul’s sense of humor. Every time he told a joke on the set, it was so corny that everyone around had lukewarm responses. The only person who would laugh at his jokes was Byun Yo Han oppa. So they are very close to each other. They really got along well,” bringing out further laughter.

Then Kang Sora said, “Im Si Wan oppa and I connected better. But it was very different with Kang Ha Neul. I felt like it would be really awkward for us to be alone together.”

About getting closer to Kang Ha Neul than Im Si Wan towards the end of Misaeng, Kang Sora said, “When a man and woman are together, they can’t help but to have some feelings for each other. In the beginning of the drama, I think Ahn Young Yi was more focused on Jang Geu Rae’s unexpected qualities. Although he was being singled out by the other interns due to the rumors saying that he was hired through his personal connection, she focused on the fact that he is more than that after watching Jang Geu Rae (nearby).”

Kang Sora said, “But after Jang Geu Rae got used to his team, there was no need for Ahn Young Yi to give him advice anymore. She felt more sympathy towards Jang Baek Gi, who was perfect when he was an intern, but got into trouble here and there once he became officially hired. Ahn Young Yi also struggled to get along with the seniors of her team in the beginning." 

She added, “He was the one that went through the most similar experience as Ahn Young Yi during the learning process. That’s how I understood Ahn Young Yi’s heart towards Jang Baek Gi.”

About choosing to star in Misaeng because it had less weight on romance, Kang Sora said, “It’s because my previous projects focused too much on romance. So I personally felt more comfortable with this project. The more romance there is in a project, the emotions get more explosive, and in the case of actresses (depending on their characters), the emotions go back and forth.” 

Based on writer Yoon Tae Ho’s webtoon series of the same name, tvN’s Misaeng is a project that depicts the competition and sorrows of the employees at the general trading company, One International. Kang Sora acted as the ‘alpha girl’ female employee who joins the company along with Jang Geu Rae (Im Si Wan), Jang Baek Gi (Kang Ha Neul) and Han Seok Yul (Byun Yo Han).

The 20-episode drama Misaeng ended on December 20 with Jang Geu Rae parting with his colleagues at One International, after failing to switch to a permanent position at the company. Later, he joins the company headed by Oh Sang Shik (Lee Sung Min), Kim Dong Shik (Kim Dae Myung) and Kim Boo Ryun (Kim Jong Soo), marking a new beginning.

After receiving much attention, Kang Sora talked about her 39,000 won dress that she wore to the MAMA. 

Appeared as Ahn Young Yi in tvN′s Misaeng, Kang Sora shared about the 39,000 won dress that she wore to the 2014 MAMA on December 3, during the media day event on December 23 at a cafe in Itaewon. 

"During MAMA, I wore the dress without knowing its brand. More than following the trend, I usually wear clothes that fit my body type, so for that ceremony, I chose the dress for that reason," said Kang Sora. "I wore the dress while shooting photos for a soju commercial calendar. Before I wore the dress, the staff members on set were indifferent, but once I wore it, they became focused and even took pictures with their phones. I realized, ′This is it.′ I found the dress′ price through the articles." 

Regarding the issue, Kang Sora′s agency rep also talked about the situation. "Just like Kang Sora said, the dress was something that she wore at a regular shooting." 

"The concept of the commercial was ′Soju that Becomes Gentle,′ so we chose a dress that focused more on healthy beauty. The reaction from the male staff was so good, so we also thought that the dress was pretty. Then we ended up going to MAMA last minute, so she wore that dress. Ahead of the dress fitting for MAMA, we thought about that dress. Since she would be presenting an award, and not receiving one, we decided to go more casual and chose that outfit." 

The rep continued, "Kang Sora usually has a hard time finding clothes that fit well with her body type. So she focuses more on what fits her better rather than the price or brand. It was just a simple thought, but she was spotlighted as a celebrity with a right mind. We were a bit caught off guard." 

"Kang Sora likes expensive and inexpensive clothes. She has a lot of interest in clothes, so she even pretends to be a university student and buys things off of secondhand sites. Kang Sora finds it fun, thinking it′sa form of acting," said the rep. "Her real life is quite simple, so we were worried that everything was being excessively expressed during MAMA. We were a bit burdened, wondering if we were disappointing the fans." 

Regarding Kang Sora′s 1,220,000 won shoes to her 39,000 won dress, the rep answered, "Since the dress was navy, we searched for navy shoes and received them as a sponsor. The dress and the shoes weren′t something we planned on promoting." 

During the 2014 MAMA at the AWE in Hong Kong, Kang Sora caught much attention for wearing the ′H′ brand dress worth 39,000 won on during the red carpet event.

Actress Kang Sora revealed that the secret to her excellent English in“Misaeng“ is thanks to bootlegged videos.

On December 23, Kang Sora revealed some backstories from “Misaeng.” When she was asked about her fluent English on the drama, she said, “I liked English as a hobby ever since I was young.”

She added, “Since I was an only child, I was home alone a lot and my mother showed me a lot of Disney animation videos. But you know how if the videos had been obtained properly, they would have subtitles or dubbing? It seems the videos that my mother brought had been obtained in another way because they didn’t have subtitles, so I studied a little bit in order to understand.”

Kang Sora also revealed that she had even prepared to go to an English high school when she was in junior high, revealing that her skills did not come to her overnight.

About the Russian she speaks in the drama, she said, “That’s a language that I learned for the first time on the drama. Before that, I’d never seen or heard it being spoken before. Since the other actors were so focused on the pronunciation, there were a lot of times I couldn’t understand what they were saying. Sometimes I wouldn’t even know if the intention of the words were for confrontation or spoken out of annoyance, so I would sometimes change the intonation slightly although it’s not supposed to be spoken like that.”

Meanwhile, Kang Sora played Ahn Young Yi in “Misaeng,” an employee who has a perfect resume and skills, but is discriminated by her peers because of her gender.
