does the 'friends' function no longer exist?

I wasn't around when Soompi changed to this new format/style and I'm still trying to catch up but, I remember being able to add people as friends before so that it was easy to check in one what people were up to and message them and the like. Is that no longer possible? It's too hard for me to try and remember every single person that posted things that seemed interesting to me and that I would like to check in on again to see if they post something like that again ;;

The "friends" function became the "following" function a while back. After the most recent revamp, the "following" function was completely taken away.

So there's no way of keeping track of what people are up to anymore?  Cause...it's so time consuming to have to go through aaaalll threads and look for the yellows thing that tells me something new has been posted...
