Kim Nam-gil and Sohn Ye-jin courted for revenge drama

by girlfriday | March 7, 2013 |

Have we finally got a post-army comeback project in the works for Kim Nam-gil? It’s still in unconfirmed casting stages, but new KBS revenge drama Shark is after both Kim Nam-gil and Sohn Ye-jin to headline. It’s the latest project from the writer-director team behind Fermentation FamilyMawang (Devil)Resurrection, and ’90s series SchoolSharkwill be the final installment of the Resurrection/Devil trilogy.

It’s slated to follow Kim Hye-soo’s rom-com God of the Workplace on Mondays/Tuesdays, but the casting on this one still sounds very iffy — both Kim Nam-gil and Sohn Ye-jin’s reps confirm that it’s a drama they’re looking at, but say that it’s just one of many potential projects. There’s very little info on the drama itself, but if it’s anything likeResurrection or Devil, there will be murder and mayhem, psychological twistiness, and lots of revenge. I wonder if Uhm Tae-woong would’ve just rounded out the trilogy and starred in Shark if he wasn’t playing Yi Sun-shin later this year.

I like the pairing, and it’d be great to see Kim Nam-gil — ahem, complete — a revenge thriller like Bad Guy and not have the story go to the loony bin on him. It’s been years away from dramaland for both of them, so this show would certainly make some waves if it could score the double comeback.

Shark is looking at a late-May or early-June premiere on KBS.

Son Ye Jin Swims to Small Screen with “Shark”

It’s been three years since we have seen this talented actress on television; her last project was the 2010 drama, “Personal Taste” with Lee Min HoSon Ye Jin finally returns to the small screen with KBS’ “Shark,” playing the leading role of Jo Hae Woo.

“Shark” will be a revenge drama centering on the character of Jo Hae Woo and the man she loves- a man bent on revenge for the death of his father. Jo Hae Woo is the only daughter of the Gaya Hotel Group, who gives up her position as an heiress to become a prosecutor. The character is described as someone who follows her heart and is passionate and courageous, with a lot of confidence and charisma. Son Ye Jin stated that she is looking forward to playing Jo Hae Woo and expressing the deep emotions of the character.

Expectations for the drama are high as the team that produced “The Devil” and “Resurrection” is also behind this drama. “Shark” will start airing near the end of May, after “God of the Workplace.”

DRAMA CASTING & NEWS
Sohn Ye-jin confirms melo, awaits her hero

by javabeans | March 26, 2013 |

…or maybe anti-hero is more like it. It IS a revenge piece, after all.

Finally some confirmations for Shark, the melodrama being prepped by KBS. While the production has been floating several big names in the press, Sohn Ye-jin (Personal Taste, Tower) is the first to officially sign on. It’s been rumored that Kim Nam-gil (Bad Guy) would make this his comeback series, but we’ll have to wait to see if he takes on another revenge melo next after already doing one, albeit with a three-year army gap in between the two.

One point of interest for this show, aside from potential big-name stars, is that it’s the work of a writer-director pair who brought us two notable dramas in this genre:Resurrection in 2005 and Devil in 2007. Both were dark, intense, and dramatic. I do enjoy when shows are actually dark, rather than merely flirting with the idea and then copping out at the end. (I still think of how good Bad Guy could have been — you know, if it made sense.)

Sohn’s character is the only daughter to the owner of a large hotel, possessing of a strong and independent nature. She rejects the chaebol path of inheriting the family business and instead becomes a prosecutor, a job into which she pours all of her energies.

The leading man, on the other hand, backstabs the woman he loves in the pursuit of revenge. Oh, and also changes his face. HA. I know that’s not supposed to be funny… but c’mon, it’s a little bit funny. (Also: Angel’s Temptation.) After her family is the cause of his father’s death, he disguises himself with a new face and identity and reapproaches his enemies, only to fall in love with the daughter. Wait, ISN’T this Angel’s Temptation all over again, maybe crossed with Bad Guy? I’m seeing words like “despair and pain,” “tragic fate,” and “vicious love.” So, yup, melodrama it is.

I’m starting to see more stories about possible castings in the headlines, so I’d expect more confirmations to follow soon. Kim Nam-gil has been heavily touted as the likely lead, while idol star Gu Hara (City Hunter) has been floated as his character’s younger sister. I actually don’t want Kim Nam-gil to take a drama that’s so similar in nature to his last one, so I wouldn’t be too sad if we got a new hero… just as long as it’s a good one.

Shark will follow God of the Workplace and is set to premiere in May.
