It's coincidentally September last year when she was diagnosed with cancer and she went into treatment straightaway, completely immersed to fully fight the battle.

It's truly a loss for the industry -- an actress who had so much to give but just look at the colleagues coming to pay their last respects showing how much she is loved and will be remembered. Jeon Do Yeon looks completely heartbroken. Even those who never worked with her, all came to say goodbye.

Thanks melusine for the photos.. I know that you're equally and utterly heartbroken. We never expected this.

I never would have expected that this would be the outcome for her and at such a young age. She will be sorely missed as I have also enjoyed her body of work and will miss her onscreen.

Thanks Melusine for posting the photos, everyone looks utterly devastated by her death. My deepest condolences to her friends and especially her family.

I can't believe there's only two pages to her thread. I quess she's not that well known in here. Now that she's dead, there's more talk about her than ever.

So young, so sad. RIP

rubie I feel awful. The clicking-copying-pasting is keeping me from bawling.

Back when she was diagnosed in September, they (understandably) didn't release more details, so I took JJY's optimism at face value and was just hoping and praying that they had caught the cancer in its early stages. But given the rapid progression of the disease, it now looks otherwise.

At least she is not in pain anymore.

Anyone dying young is a tragedy. I can't even process yet that the world has lost a lovely human being (judging from the faces of her devastated family and friends and colleagues--my condolences to all of them). I didn't know her personally, but as a fan, I feel her loss keenly because Jang JinYoung was an ACTOR in the truest sense of the word. And talent like that is not so easy to come by. I honestly thought that I would get to watch her age gracefully onscreen, until she becomes one of those veteran actress ajummas like Na MoonHee. But life is sometimes cruel and I feel like we've been robbed of years and years of amazing work that will never be.

I remember rubie and I talked about starting her thread many months ago, but I put it off because I had too much on my plate then... It is a pity that her thread was started under these circumstances, but I hope those unfamiliar with her will not only know her as someone who died before her time, nor only as Maria from the flawed Lobbyist. Watch her movies: she is so much more than that. And I take comfort that she will live on in her filmography, and thus will never be forgotten.

Of course she was gorgeous, but hers was a unique, subtle beauty, something that stood out in an industry where actresses' looks are becoming increasingly homogenized. And despite it, she always had a genuine quality which served her characters well--she always felt like a real person.

Of course she was great at playing damaged women (like in Between Love and Hate, and she was fantastic in Sorum), but my absolute favorite thing about her (and the one I will miss the most) was the joy she could portray onscreen. That effervescence that is such a pleasure to watch--that huge smile, that twinkle in her eyes, that infectious laugh. You see it as Lee JungJae and Park HaeIl can't help but fall in love with her in Over the Rainbow and Scent of Love, you see it when she gets drunk and complains about life and cracks up with Uhm JungHwa and Lee BeomSoo in Singles, and you especially see it in Blue Swallow (her best role) when she fulfills her lifelong dream of soaring across the sky and flying towards the sun.

And that's how I'd like to remember her. Fare thee well my bright star...

^ That is a beautiful and heartfelt dedication in memory of Jang JinYoung, melusine. No doubt that there will always be lingering regret and sadness but we really never saw this coming. Because Jang Jin Young herself have been so positively optimistic to fight the battle of her life.

She's truly an actor and most of all, a FIGHTER!

Jang Jin-Young (1974-2009)

Posted by X at 5:19am.

It was probably 1998, on the legendary SBS sitcom 순풍산부인과 (Soonpong Clinic), that I first saw her.

She wasn’t one of those actresses whose obnoxious beauty jumps straight at you, but her charms were much subtler, as if she knew she didn’t have to flaunt anything to get by. And, strangely, her acting had the same exact aftertaste. Until Kim Ji-Woon cast her in 2000’s 반칙왕 (The Foul King), she went through the usual steps most actresses her age had to endure: a debut with a supporting role on low-key TV dramas, and then a move to Chungmuro, where she headlined the CG-heavy fantasy-melodrama 자귀모 (Ghost in Love). Film was pretty bad, but she managed to shine anyhow. And it’s not like The Foul King would be anything that could display her acting chops, as she was one of the few straight-faced characters in what was a wonderful cinematic zoo full of ad-lib magic. Her career changed by meeting Yoon Jong-Chan, but perhaps she was the one who felt the need for a change. It’s funny, because looking back at 2001’s phenomenal psychological thriller 소름 (Sorum), Yoon cast two nearly unknown actors (Kim Myung-Min and Jo An) next to someone who had never even breathed in the direction of something so complex. The result was what is still one of the best examples of the genre, and the realization that Jang had major talent. It had just been hidden by clouds of fluff.

Yoon is important because he essentially gave us, or allowed Jang to give us the two highest peaks of her career. After Sorum, she was cast in a couple of average melodramas and the lovely romcom 싱글즈 (Singles), but it was with the wonderful 청연 (Blue Swallow) that she touched the sky. Her acting there wasn’t just great, it had those intangibles which, mixed with the endless raw power of Yoon’s fantastic period drama, made for one of the very best Korean films of the last 10 years, albeit the controversy surrounding it created more smoke than the film ever needed. Actor and writer Kim Hae-Gon’s flawed but intriguing debut 연애, 그 참을 수 없는 가벼움 (Between Love and Hate) was another proof that her acting was taking off, catapulting her into the A-list, but it’s sort of sad that her last project, that maligned mess known as 로비스트 (Lobbyist), never took advantage of her skills. Sad that she never really got the chance to prove how much upside she still had, if not for those moments of magic up in the colonial sky of Yoon Jong-Chan’s great little jewel.

I can’t say I’m very surprised to hear this. It became a possibility, when we first reported last September of her gastric cancer, but you never want to think about it, particularly when the victims are so young, and still with so much to give. Jang had been living in the US with her boyfriend the last few months, and it seemed like things would at least go back to normality, at least when it came to her life away from the cameras. But, upon her return to Korea last August 5, she was hospitalized once again, for an uphill battle which ended this morning, at only 35. Hard to say anything in cases like this, other than cliches like “Korea has lost one of its brightest stars.” She never fully realized all the immense potential she had, and in retrospect, her choice of projects wasn’t always the best. But when Jang Jin-Young was game, few actresses in Korea could ever contend with her.

So I’d just like to remember her for those little, great moments she gave us. And, wherever she is now, to say goodbye. And thank you.

I've known her as Maria through Lobbyist with actor Song Il Gook. She had a pure, natural and innocent beauty. It is so sad that she had passed away at such a young age. Korea Film Industry had lost another big star. Rest in peace JJY.

Jang Jin-young Loses Battle with Cancer

2009090200466_1.jpg

Jang Jin-young

The actress Jang Jin-young died at the St. Mary's Hospital in Seoul at 4:05 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon. She was 37. Jang had been diagnosed with stomach cancer in September 2008 and courageously battled the illness, receiving medical treatment in the United States and seeking help from traditional acupuncture and oriental medicine.

Jang has been hospitalized in Seoul since her condition worsened recently. Doctors reportedly gave her morphine and other drugs to relieve the pain.

Jang was seen at a concert in May, when her condition temporarily improved, and announced that she had a boyfriend after coming back from the U.S. But her health began to deteriorate in August and she was hospitalized again. It is then when she learned the cancer had spread to all over her body and recovery was impossible.

Born in Jeonju, North Jeolla Province, Jang made her debut after winning a regional division of the 1993 Miss Korea beauty pageant. She mainly worked as a model in her early career, and began moving toward TV soap operas and sitcoms in 1997. Her film debut came in 1999 with "Ghost in Love," and became prolific with a series of movies such as "The Foul King (2000)," "Sorum (2001)," "The Scent of Love (2003)," "Singles (2003)," and "Blue Swallow (2005)".

She won many film awards during her career, including the prestigious Blue Dragon Film Awards for best leading actress for her performance in "Sorum" and "Between Love and Hate (2006)." She was also very active as an advertising model.

Jang returned to TV after long absence with SBS TV drama "Lobbyist" in October 2007. It was to be her last work.
