Moon Geun Young has undergone yet another surgery for compartment syndrome.

 

After experiencing severe pain in her right arm on February 1, Moon Geun Young visited the hospital, and was diagnosed with compartment syndrome. The condition is caused by pressure buildup from internal bleeding or swelling of tissues, decreasing blood flow and depriving muscles and nerves of needed nourishment.

Her label Namoo Actors said, "Moon Geun Young got another surgery on the 4th. The surgery went well, but we're still seeing how she recovers."

Moon Geun Young Recovering After Third Surgery, Cancels More Stage Appearances

 

 

On February 7, Moon Geun Young’s agency, Namoo Actors, put out an official press release about the actress’s state of health.

Earlier this month Moon Geun Young was diagnosed with Acute Compartment Syndrome and underwent two surgeries. As a result she had to cancel her Daejeon performances in the provincial tour of “Romeo and Juliet.”

The press release stated, “Moon Geun Young went through a third surgery on Friday and is in recovery. Fortunately her prognosis is good, but in case she needs additional surgeries, we have been in talks with the production company and decided to cancel her Daegu and Andong performances as well. We apologize to those who were looking forward to the performances, and we ask for everyone’s understanding.”

Acute compartment syndrome occurs after traumatic injury to a fascial compartment, typically in the arm or leg. It can cause severe pain, numbness, and damage to nerve tissue and requires emergency surgical treatment because the high pressure in the compartment results in lowered blood supply to muscles and nerves.

The press release concluded, “The actress’ desire to return to the stage is strong, but she is in a situation where she must stay monitored in the hospital.”

On February 7, Namoo Actors let fans know Moon Geun Young was currently out of the hospital following her third round of surgery, and showings of the play 'Romeo and Juliet', in which she stars as Juliet, in Daegu and Andong have been canceled. 

The label stated, "Moon Geun Young has received her third surgery today and is in recovery. Thankfully, the prognosis looks good, and as it's possible she might need another surgery, the Daegu and Andong showings of 'Romeo and Juliet' have been canceled after multiple meetings with the producers. We sincerely apologize to the awaiting audience and everyone associated with the play who are inconvenienced. We ask for your understanding."

The acute compartment syndrome is a disease that requires urgent surgery due to severe pain, paralysis, damage of nerve tissue and others as blood flow to muscles and nervous tissues decreases below a certain level due to increase in intraocular pressure.

Five days ago, it was announced that Moon Geun Young would miss appearances due to pain in her right arm, and she actually had to be rushed to the hospital for emergency surgery. She was diagnosed with acute compartment syndrome, and three days ago had to go through a second surgery.

Well today it was announced she went through a third surgery and announced that she would cancel further appearances in case she needed additional operations. That seems … not great. I try not to be an alarmist because fans are that way as it is, but acute compartment syndrome is bad and three surgeries for it also seems to be bad.

The American Academy Of Orthopaedic Surgeons describes compartment syndrome thusly…

Compartment syndrome develops when swelling or bleeding occurs within a compartment. Because the fascia does not stretch, this can cause increased pressure on the capillaries, nerves, and muscles in the compartment. Blood flow to muscle and nerve cells is disrupted. Without a steady supply of oxygen and nutrients, nerve and muscle cells can be damaged. In acute compartment syndrome, unless the pressure is relieved quickly, permanent disability and tissue death may result.

…and the treatment is basically cutting you open until it stops being a problem.

Acute compartment syndrome is a surgical emergency. There is no effective nonsurgical treatment. Your doctor will make an incision and cut open the skin and fascia covering the affected compartment. This procedure is called a fasciotomy. Sometimes, the swelling can be severe enough that the skin incision cannot be closed immediately. The incision is surgically repaired when swelling subsides. Sometimes a skin graft is used.

I know when it’s talked about in athletics, amputation is definitely a risk if they get to it too late. So this is definitely a serious situation, and three surgeries doesn’t seem ideal.

Also, what I noticed is that nobody is saying how she got the injury, which would seemingly have to be a serious blow of some kind. We’re talking like bone fractures, deep muscle tissue bruises, and crush injuries, where the most commonly cited cause is car accidents. Again, not great.

I really hope she’s alright because this appears to be more serious than most everybody is letting on, and I hope this doesn’t turn into another situation like James from Royal Pirates had to suffer through.

Actress Moon Geun Young underwent a successful third surgery Friday for acute compartment syndrome and is now recovering.

The star's management agency Namoo Actors released an official statement Tuesday announcing the success of her third operation after being diagnosed with ACS.

Namoo Actors updated fans on the 29-year-old actress' state of health as well as the showings of the play "Romeo and Juliet" in Daegu and Andong.

 

"Moon Geun Young has received her third surgery today and is in recovery," stated Namoo Actors, according to all K-pop. "Thankfully, the prognosis looks good, and as it's possible she might need another surgery, the Daegu and Andong showings of 'Romeo and Juliet' have been canceled after multiple meetings with the producers."

They added, "We sincerely apologize to the awaiting audience and everyone associated with the play who are inconvenienced. We ask for your understanding." 

The star of "My Little Bride," also hailed as the "Nation's Little Sister," underwent multiple emergency surgeries after visiting the hospital on February 1 due to a severe pain on her right arm.

She then bowled out from the scheduled provincial showings of "Romeo and Juliet."

"The actress' desire to return to the stage is strong, but she is in a situation where she must stay monitored in the hospital," stated Namoo Actors, according to Soompi.

A traumatic injury such as a car crash which could affect pressure in the fascial compartment and consequently limit the blood supply to the muscles and nerves can cause the Compartment Syndrome.

A person with ACS needs to undergo an emergency surgery. Otherwise, the person will suffer the loss of the function of the affected limb.

The other type of Compartment Syndrome is the Chronic exertional which is caused by extreme exercise.

Moon Geum Young's last big and small screen appearances were in 2015 for the period film "The Throne" and SBS mystery thriller' "The Village: Achiara's Secret."

Berlin: Finecut Adds ‘Glass Garden,’ ‘True Fiction’

Finecut, Korea’s leading indie sales firm, is giving market premieres in Berlin’s European Film Market to two titles with strong festival potential for later this year.

 

 

The company is launching “Glass Garden” a mystery fantasy directed by Shin Su-won. She previously gained festival credibility with Pluto” which appeared in Berlin’s Generation 14 Plus section in 2013, and 2015 effort “Madonna,” which debuted in Cannes’ Un Certain Regard.

 

 

The film is the story of an oddball bioenergetics researcher who is befriended by a novelist who uncovers the woman’s secret while writing and story about her. Currently in post-production, the film stars Moon Geun-young (“The Throne,” “A Tale of Two Sisters”) as the scientist and Kim Tae-hun (“Roaring Currents,” “The Man From Nowhere”) as the writer.

 

 

Finecut has also boarded suspense thriller “True Fiction.” The film is presented by Peppermint&company, the production company behind “I Saw The Devil” and “New World.” Directed by Kim Jin-mook and starring Ji Hyun-woo “Attack the Gas Station 2” and Lee Eun-woo (Kim Ki-duk titles “The Net” and Moebius”,) the film topically involves politicians and corruption.

 

 

Finecut is also representing international sales on Berlin International Film Festival competition title “On The Beach at Night Alone.” The film is the fourth movie directed by Hong Sang-soo and starring his latest muse Kim Min-hee. It plays towards the end of the festival on Feb. 16.

Korean film distributor FINECUT, which is presenting HONG Sangsoo’s new film On the Beach at Night Alone in the International Competition section of the Berlin International Film Festival this year, has added new films to its lineup for the currently underway European Film Market (EFM).

 

Joining the boutique distributor’s lineup in Berlin are the debut suspense thriller True Fiction and SHIN Su-won’s new mystery fantasy Glass Garden. JI Hyun-woo (Attack The Gas Station 2, 2010), OH Man-seok (DETOUR, 2016) and LEE Eun-woo (Moebius, 2013) feature in KIM Jin-muk’s True Fiction, a tale of corruption and politics from the production house PEPPERMINT&COMPANY, previously behind KIM Jee-woon’s I Saw The Devil (2010) and PARK Hoon-jung’s New World (2013).

 

Starring MOON Geun-young of A Tale Of Two Sisters (2003) as a reclusive but brilliant researcher and KIM Tae-hun (Roaring Currents, 2014) as the writer who approaches her, Glass Garden follows director SHIN’s Berlin-invited PLUTO (2013) and Cannes-invited Madonna (2015).

Amputation seemed like a legitimate worry at the time for something that seemed to have a lot of complications. Fortunately, her company says that despite having a fourth surgery, her condition is improving.

Actress Moon Geun Young of Cheongdamdong Alice and The Painter of the Wind-fame has been discharged from the hospital, and reportedly, her “condition has improved greatly” after undergoing her fourth surgery for acute compartment syndrome, according to her agency Namoo Actors on March 3.

 

 

The update from her agency reads: “Moon Geun Young has completed her fourth surgical procedure and as her condition has improved greatly, she has been granted permission to be discharged from the hospital. However, she will require continued treatment and rest until she is fully healed, having gone through multiple strenuous surgical procedures. She will be resting and receiving treatment for the time being. We would like to thank everyone who has expressed their worries and sympathies for her. On February 1, the actress complained of sudden pain in her right arm, prompting her to visit the hospital the following morning. During her visit, doctors found she had acute compartment syndrome. Due to the severity of the diagnosis, she immediately received emergency surgery. More surgeries then followed with a second operation on February 3, and a third operation on February 4.

According to WebMD, “acute compartment syndrome is the most common type of compartment syndrome.” The syndrome itself: “occurs when excessive pressure builds up inside an enclosed muscle space in the body. Compartment syndrome usually results from bleeding or swelling after an injury. The dangerously high pressure in compartment syndrome impedes the flow ofbloodto and from the affected tissues. It can be an emergency, requiring surgery to prevent permanent injury.”

The actress was in the middle of domestic touring with the theater production of Romeo and Juliet, acting as Juliet, when her health condition came about. After undergoing the first surgery, her agency confirmed that her upcoming appearances in the show were canceled. More stage appearances were canceled following the additional surgeries. Her agency said that she wished to appear on stage, but with everyone including the stage production’s understanding, health comes first.
