aWw.. these are fabulous clips! Merci beaucoup!

I haven't downloaded the first clip.. connection a bit blurr tonight but the second clip is perfect. Wow.. the guys were all so DUSTY-faced in the clip :sweatingbullets: .. from the shooting in the desert plains of China. And the stunts they had to do.. they really did the action scenes themselves. Well done!

Love the good relationship shown by the actors & Dir. Kim. Despite the hardship & long filming.. everyone is in great mood and interaction.. an unforgettable adventure of a lifetime for a truly awesome feature!

It's sad that Mr. Song may not be as visible as before in BH's activities but I'm quite certain that he will still help and support BH in all of his endeavors. He has been BH's manager for the longest time and their relationship is already very deep, just like brothers. I guess, it's the time for him to move on and am pretty sure it was with BH's blessing. At least, he will still take care of BH's activities in Japan and Jiwoo's too. Congrats for Artists View.

Thanks ylin and Sung-ja for the latest news.

Here's another GBW related video that I recorded from festival-cannes.fr's website:

Huh.. Janice.. I thought you were around.. all over at IRIS but didn't stop here to post. :sweatingbullets:

It might be difficult for movie threads to reach even a hundred but we might have better chance with IRIS. But who knows.. with the explosive GBW .. we might just have to be ready for the pages to come! :P

Thanks ylin for the SBS clip.. will definitely download it once the traffic eases. :sweatingbullets:

Our gratitude to cutiepie at GBW thread for this awesome sharing!

Don't miss the clip rbhcool.gif

.. it had footage of JWS, SKH and LBH arriving in Cannes. Even though BH arrives late at night of the 23rd after long day filming.. he was so warmhearted to sign autographs for waiting fans. There's even a male Caucasian fan asking for his signature.

If anyone could make some screencaps of BH arriving .. that would be so awesome.

Cannes aftermath by Stephen Schaefer

After 10 days of movies, interviews, jet lag and very little sun, I missed Laurent Cantet’s “The Class,” the movie that won the Palme D’Or as Best Picture, a unanimous vote from the Sean Penn-led, seven-member jury that included Natalie Portman. What funny here, or ironic if you will, is that everyone I spoke to after the screening, when I asked, ‘But you don’t think it will win the Palme?” I heard unanimously, four or five times, “No. But it’s very good.”

I knew “The Class” was going to be first-rate. It’s adapted by Cantet and stars the actual teacher Francois Begaudeau whose nonfiction book had been an influential French bestseller. There was kind of a Charlie Kaufman layer on cinematic layers in having the author play himself in a movie that takes movie-style liberties with the source. Cantet, whom I’ve met twice, has been dubbed “the poet of the working class” and had the advantage of coming to Cannes amid rumors that this jury was stacked to give a prize to the French who hadn’t won since 1987.

If that’s true – and who knows even though the French won – “Che” didn’t go home empty-handed with Benicio Del Toro’s Best Actor win. Although the film is hardly an actor’s showcase, Steven Soderbergh lost the Best Director award to Nuri Bilge Ceylan, Turkey’s beloved auteur whose “Three Monkeys” was considered a very strong Palme contender. So was the Italian Mafioso hit “Gomorra” which came in second winning the Grand Prix.

Penn’s influence can be seen in the two special awards the jury presented, to Clint Eastwood whose “Changeling” looks to be in great shape for Hollywood’s year-end awards season and to Catherine Deneuve who has been coming to Cannes since 1964 and who proves that you can look like a million dollars and have the work ethic of coal miner. Deneuve is indomitable. “Christmas Story,” one of her two Cannes entries, will open in the U.S. probably in late fall.

I missed “The Class” to do an Abel Ferrara interview but this American independent whose documentary on the Chelsea Hotel was greeted with a ho-hum couldn’t get up early enough to keep on schedule. So I got to do neither. But I did see a fantastic Korean western that was truly the best way possible to end this movie madness. Kim Jee-Won’s “The Good, The Bad, the Weird” is set in 1930s Manchuria and is an elaborate, Saturday afternoon serial-style epic that is so much more fun than the latest Indiana Jones. Maybe that’s because it is far more sadistic, violent and gory with opium dens, topless women and casualties by the score. A thrill-a-minute ride into the past, it’s as if Howard Hawks and John Ford were either reincarnated or smiling down from that Cinema in the Sky.

The clip from cutiepie is similar to ylin's; I remembered seeing BH signing the autograph for the ladies & the caucasian man, French man ;) I like the last image with them aja aja "fighting"! They must be pretty worn out at the end of the day but they looked high spirited!

Oh so GBW is better than IJ, read a few reviews & many did not give good feedback; Whoa, didin't know there's women in GBW, I thought it's guys all the way :sweatingbullets:

The actor in him is just growing and growing. Where & when most are taking a safer trek.. BH challenges himself to the fullest. Whatever the reason & result may be, the most important that he tried and did his very best. With GBW, ICWTR and the popcorn treat GI Joe.. a cool spy thriller is waiting in IRIS. There'll be more to expect from this awesome actor, I'm just so excited thinking what his next and next project would be.

aWw.. Janice, it'll be too bad seeing you less here. It's been so cool having someone to ramble on IRIS, GBW and lots of stuff. Now that the Cannes excitement is slowly subsiding (despite all the anxiety, it was A LOT OF FUN!).. now.. it's just calmness everywhere.. till the next storm.. the thread will be sooooooo quiet again.

I'm especially grateful that you took this silly panda's ramble without hesitation.. and that means a lot to me.

Korean cowboy "The Good, the Bad, the Weird" charms at Cannes

"The Good, the Bad, the Weird" had a good reception at Cannes Film Festival. It is a movie about men on a chase about a treasure map and takes place in the 1930s, in the Japanese colony of Manchuria.

It was first revealed through a press conference on the 24th. On the same day, executive chairman of the Cannes Film Festival Thierry Fremaux volunteered to host the conference. Sean Penn, Natalie Portman, and other Hollywood stars attended.

Director Kim Ji-woon said, "It's great to have a warm welcome in a foreign place. We filmed for nine months going back and forth from Korea to China. The actors and staff went through a lot with hot temperatures in the Gobi Desert in China.

Director Kim said that the movie showing in Cannes and the movie premiering in Korea had different endings. "The Korean version has more humor and action, and it is more entertaining so the whole family can enjoy it".

He said that he got a lot of his inspiration from Director Clint Eastwood's 1992 movie "Unforgiven". He said, "I wasn't particularly aiming to make the Western genre popular in Asia. It's enough that I can revive the Manchurian Western genre in Korea".

Lee Byeong-Heon said, "I wondered if I should get some information while watching a Western movie, but I didn't because I thought I would copy the character exactly. It's true that it was overwhelming to make a creative evil character that was hard to express. But it was a chance for me to have a new experience. Although this character is evil and willing to risk his life to become the best, he is an introvert and focuses on the small details. I focused on portraying a character that wasn't greedy for money but was willing to kill someone because of fame, someone with depth".

Jeong Woo-seong met with Korea's press on the 23rd and said, "I'm glad that the movie first showed at Cannes Film Festival. I think I can proudly step on the red carpet because of the good reviews from foreign movie critics".

He also said, "I hope for more opportunities to film movies with a great cast, such as Lee Byeong-Heon and Song Kang-ho. It's hard to meet actors with ability, but if those actors want to come together, there needs to be a great scenario. In that sense, "The Good, the Bad, the Weird" has all these characteristics".

Song Kang-ho couldn't hide his proud look as he said, "I'm glad that I was again invited to the world's best film festival following last year for "Secret Sunshine". The Korean movie industry seems inactive, but I hope that this is a way to advertise the industry so it may find its pride once again. I feel that this is the first movie in a while that the whole family can enjoy. I'm proud that I can show my kids how hard I worked to shoot this film".

As much as it is a Western, it has dangerous scenes. Jeong Woo-seong said, "There was a time I kept filming without knowing my arm was broken. The scene with the horse was dangerous, for they were race horses".

Song Kang-ho remembered running to catch the train on a hill with rarefied air. "I breathed in air with a portable oxygen tank, ran, breathed, and then ran. It was harder than I thought to run for it 2000 meters above sea level".

There were hardships while filming for three months in China. Still, Song Kang-ho said, "There were some communication problems, but on resting days, we played soccer and the losing team paid for dinner. We got along".

"The Good, the Bad, the Weird" will be marketed in France and China. At the Cannes Film Festival, they sold copyright rights to Hollywood's Mel Gibson's movie company Icon Pictures, Benelux, Russia, Germany, Turkey, England, and Singapore.

It premiers in July in Korea.

Lee Byung-hun does Vogue Korea

http://www.popseoul.com/2008/05/29/lee-byu...es-vogue-korea/

Lee Byung-hun taps into his dark side for a photoshoot in the June 2008 issue of Vogue Korea. The 38 year old actor looks like he stepped out of an Edgar Allan Poe’s famous poem, “The Raven.”

Now what does this have anything to do with his upcoming kimchi western, “The Good, The Bad and The Weird” ?

^^ Thanks for all the GBW/Cannes news. I'm glad that it's getting a lot of positive feedbacks from those who have seen it. At least, it's not an all-out hardcore action movie. It seems that it's entertaining, humurous and exciting. I heard Indiana Jones didnt do so well critic-wise. :phew:

The Vogue pictorial of LBH maybe a pre-ad to his "Bad" characters in ICWTR and GBW.

The usual charming, cassanova-type LBH has a "dark" side afterall.

LBH can reinvent himself whenever he wants to. That's why he is a consummate actor. :)

Variety Praises The Good, the Bad, the Weird (read the Variety review here)

gbw2poster1.jpg

KIM Jee-woon’s highly anticipated ‘oriental western’, The Good, the Bad, the Weird, had its world premiere at the 61st Cannes film festival this month where it was given a Gala Screening at a packed 2400 seat theater. Following the end credits, director KIM and stars SONG Kang-ho, JUNG Woo-sung and LEE Byung-hun received a 10-minute standing ovation from the enraptured audience.

In the days following, US entertainment trade magazine Variety, offered the first review of the film in the mainstream press, beginning with a glowing intro: “East meets West meets East again, with palate-tingling results.” Writer Derek Elley praised the film, comparing it to Sergio Leone’s classic, The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly for its “striking widescreen visuals” but adding that it is a “much more intense, visceral, full-contact experience than Leone's -- and, as such, 100% Korean.”

Elley highlights the film’s bracing pace, impressive set-pieces, chemistry of the three star leads, wild score, and a “jaw-dropping” chase scene through the desert flatlands. The film is the second-most expensive Korean film ever produced, going over-budget to a reported US$ 17 million. It is slated for release in Korean theaters on July 17th with Elley predicting it “looks headed for through-the-roof local biz, hunky returns throughout Asia and piquant specialized B.O. in the West.”
