I think it says they will begin filming in Akita from 10th March. :P

Thanks Ching for the quick clarification. Just 3 days more to go! :w00t:

The IRIS team and Byunghun-ssi must be really busy now preparing for the trip to Akita. Hope we'll get to see some pics and updates from the filming later. Heard that Akita is snowing this time of the year but the food there is simply excellent, especially. BH would be enjoying himself as well.. he loves to work and eating good food!

I think BH's been busy practising/rehearsing action scenes at the Action school.. the one he went for BSL and GBW. So, we can expect to see some really cool kicks and tight action scenes in the spy thriller. Things are getting so exciting with March finally here.

It's a good thing too with the early filming date.. hopefully with the schedule going as planned, BH might be able to get a bit of time off later to attend the AFA and his Star Shop launch on the 27th. Looks like he's going through the same back-and-forth flying schedule like he did for GBW & ICWTR before. Our Hunnie.. he never sits still..

Byunghun-ssi, stay healthy & be happy. IRIS Fighting!

Choi Ji Woo’s “Plant” Shop

2009 March 7

tags: Choi Ji Woo

by KP

Actress Choi Ji Woo is now a businesswoman. (No, not as a seller of plants.)

Relatedly, actor Lee Byung Hun isopening up a shop selling Kaori hats in cooperation with Ninth Avenue. The mall, located by Guro Station on Subway Line 1, is expected to look like the picture below when complete. It includes retail space, a fitness facility, a conference center, business properties, and housing.

^ Thanks Ching for the latest update. An avid hat collector, BH must have a collection of hats by Kaori to be in a joint-venture with the company.. huh. :D

I wonder why he doesn't set up a Samantha Tiara counter as well.. that would be most appropriate for Byunghun-ssi, being his own designer jewelry line. Don't think Korea has an outlet yet.. it could definitely increase the market. But maybe.. it's only exclusive to Japan and New York, with ST being a Japanese namebrand especially.

Which btw.. is BH still with Samantha? Or just keeping ST available with the current designs of Love . Belief . Honesty . Bond & Promise in the market .. but nonetheless.. looking for an idea for the future, instead?

Hi Cynthia! So good to hear from you.. and wow! there'll Stormy Snow in Akita, huh. Can't never imagine the cold weather *brrrr* but BH is already used to it.. he had that one drama (The Asphalt Man, I think) that they shot in the snow plains of Siberia?

But a treat not to be missed in Akita I've been told.. apart from the beautiful scenery, the fabulous food.. is the refreshing hot springs. Maybe a scene or two of topless you-know-who.

Never to fret, Cynthia-hunnie.. you might be able to catch Byunghun-ssi at another location filming.. he's going all over the world.

[The soul of SEOUL(17)] Arirang Hill - birthplace of Korean film

200903050044.jpg

Movie poster at Na Un-gyu Park

This is the 17th in a series of articles highlighting tourism spots in Seoul. The useful guide for planning weekend trips in the capital city will help readers rediscover Seoul. - Ed.

On a warm spring day, I met a beautiful blue-eyed young lady. She said she liked music and had been in Korea for six months. When I asked her if she knew the Korean flag, she answered that it was called taegukgi and described its shape and color clearly. When I asked about the national anthem of Korea she smiled, and confidently said "Arirang."

The national anthem of Korea is "Aegukga." However, Korea is so closely attached to "Arirang" that many foreigners think of "Arirang" when they are asked about the national anthem. Korean sentiment and history are bound up in the song and its familiar melody.

Arirang Hill

"Arirang Hill" is the name of a 1.45 km stretch of road northeast of the city center. The natural shape of Arirang-hill has disappeared, but its name still holds the traces of the past.

Its original name was Jeongneung Hill. Its name changed thanks to a film by Na Un-gyu.

Na was born in 1902 in North Hamgyeong Province, now part of North Korea, just before the Japanese colonial period. As a child, he liked drama and would sit at the front every day when touring plays visited the village. He made a drama for himself with his friends. He liked reading too - sometimes he was scolded for reading books all day instead of going to school. As he grew up, he became interested in the independence movement and in film. When he was cast as "Blind Man Sim," a minor role, in the film "Simcheongjeon," he visited blind men to learn about their gestures and way of thinking. But sadly, "Simcheongjeon" was a big failure.

200903050042.jpg

A view of Na Un-gyu Park

Na decided to make a film himself. He wrote the script, directed and played the role of the hero. He arranged "Arirang," the theme song of the film, and played the role of the narrator. The location of the film was Jeongneung Hill. When the film, entitled "Arirang," was released on Oct. 1, 1926, it was a big hit. "Arirang" was sung across the country. It became an anthem for the Koreans who had lost their country. Since then Jeongneung Hill has been known as "Arirang Hill."

The film begins with the narration: "There is Arirang Hill in the distance." Na plays Yeong-jin, a young man driven to insanity by the oppression of Japanese colonial rule. When he sees Oh Gi-ho, an agent of colonial Japan, trying to rape his younger sister, he kills him with a sickle. He only comes to his senses when he sees blood. The melody of "Arirang" is overlapped with an image of Yeong-jin crossing Arirang Hill bound by a rope.

Na made "Arirang" when he was 24 years old. Afterwards, he contributed to 29 films over 12 years and directed 19 of them. Naturally, Japan didn't like to see Korean people captivated by the young filmmaker's work. They censored every film he made, cut scenes regardless of the story, changed the titles, and banned screenings. People began to turn away from his films. However, Na did not bow to pressure and continued making films. He passed away at the age of 36 with a manuscript for a film called "Obongnyeo" in his arms.

200903050043.jpg

A walk on the hill

Arirang Hill is a nice place for a walk in the warm spring sun. If you take the subway to Sungshin Women's University Station and leave via exit number 6 to find the road, it is a 1 km walk to Arirang Cine Center. The stretch was designated Cinema Street due to its fame as the setting of "Arirang." Posters of famous films from Korea and abroad, such as "Ben-hur," "Gone with the Wind," "Shiri," and "The Reason Why Dalma Went to the East..." have been made into copperplate engravings. Most of them are in real poster size, but some are two or three times as large. If you try to look at all of them, you will be there all day.

Na Un-gyu Park is half way to Arirang Cine Center. Its black angular arch has formative beauty, and a building is decorated with tiles describing his posthumous works, film posters and his own figures. Na Un-gyu is smiling in black and white picture. But it is touching to see the face of a young film maker full of passion for cinema and a spirit of independence. The floor of park is decorated with tiles describing contemporary films. There are sets of the houses of Yeong-jin and Mr. Cheon, which appeared in the film "Arirang." They are not very large, but are a nice place to take a rest.

Birthplace of a new age of film

Arirang Cine Center (http://cine.arirang.go.kr 02-3291-5540) and Arirang Information Library sit on the ridge of Arirang Hill. The six story building is an ordinary movie theater but shows a selection of equipment to capture, edit and record film. Peopl

e can use or rent them. Arirang Inform-ation Library (http://lib.arirang.go.kr 02-3291-4990) is a good place for film maniacs as it has books on film and DVDs and other video materials. There is a monument celebrating the 100th birthday of Na at the entrance on the first floor.

Arirang Festival is held on the street in May. Today, many films are made and an enormous amount of money is spent. While Korean film enjoys such prosperity, spare a thought for Na Un-gyu, a young man who refused to surrender to colonial rule and pioneered Korean film.

"와! 이병헌이 왔다" 日열도 들썩!들썩!

'아이리스' 촬영차 방문… 팬 2.500명 공항에 몰려

스포츠한국 이재원기자 jjstar@sportshankook.co.kr

Popular Actor Lee Byung Hun arrived in Japan, Akita Airport packed with fans

Popular Korean Actor, Lee Byung Hun on 9th Mar came to Japan for the shooting of his drama [iRIS]. The shooting schedule in Japan and the duration of his stay were not disclosed to the public. However, for female fans who got to know that LBH will be arriving on this day, more than 300 of them gathered together just to have a glimpse of LBH. This had heated up the atmosphere around Akita airport.

LBH together with co-star, KTH departed from Incheon Airport, Seoul via Korean Air today. Just like red carpet for the stars, there were ropes to separate the crowd starting from the passenger exit at the International arrival hall at level 1 to the main exit of Akita Airport, but fans were there since early morning, queuing and waiting on both sides. On the opposite side of the arrival hall, there were a line of fans, 40 meters long, waiting to see LBH. Besides staff from the Airport office, there was staff from the tourism board, police, personal securities and the Korean filming crew who have arrived earlier, there were about 60 people who were on guard.

Slightly after noon, fans were all cheering, taking out their handphones and cameras, flashing away when they see LBH appearing at the level 1 atrium after going through the immigration. LBH with a gentle expression, shake hands with his fans, while walking steadily and slowly towards the exit, board the car which was waiting and left the airport.

Choi Ji-woo strikes out on her own

March 10th, 2009 // by javabeans

Choi Ji-woo is flying solo, leaving her management behind to establish her own company.

The glam (and melodrama) queen has ended her contract with Olive Nine, and even before its expiration (on March 1), Choi been approached with many management offers from other large companies. Ultimately, Choi decided to assert her independence and is busily working to set up her own company in hopes to be ready by early April — hiring staff, renting an office.

(The timing seems ill-planned — she knew her contract was ending, and only now starts setting up an office? I smell fishiness… or maybe I’ve seen too many dramas. This one seems right out of her latest, A Star’s Lover.)

A representative from Olive Nine says that despite Choi leaving the company (they’ve ended the contract “cleanly, and promised to keep on good terms”), they will continue to have a relationship of “strategic cooperation.” For instance, she is still conferring with them about a few projects in development.

Other stars who have gone independent include Choi’s Winter Sonata co-stars Bae Yong-joon and Park Yong-ha, as well as her Everybody Has Secrets co-star Lee Byung-heon. (Lee Byung-heon's BH Entertainment reps Han Chae-young; Rain’s J Tune reps Lee Da-hae and Yeon Jung-hoon; Yonsama’s BOF reps Choi Kang-hee and So Ji-sub, although the latter is ending his contract in April.)

kikkii, BH knows some conversational Japanese to use but for work.. there's also a translator to help him better .. to avoid any confusion. For the Mr. N clip in 2005, (I believe) he used Japanese as the CM is aired in Japan. These days.. from what Sung-ja said.. as he gets better in the language, Byunghun-ssi uses a lot of Japanese when he's there.

The man responsible for the body.. Byunghun's personal trainer

March 11, 2009

Korean-American trainer tones celebrity physiques

Dressed casually in sweats and a zip-up, bodybuilder-turned-celebrity trainer Danny Joe opens the door to the former residence of prominent Korean singer Lee Seung-chul. His loose clothes do little to mask his chiseled physique.

The luxurious studio apartment is spick and span. A set of barbells resting near a neatly made bed and mugs that read "Let's Starve" in Korean are the only external signs of Joe's profession; that and the fact that he has been staying in client Lee Seung-chul's pad (currently unoccupied by the singer) for the past five months.

"Everyday I thank my first love, I really do, for leaving me," says the 25-year old Korean American in an interview with The Korea Herald.

Heartbroken, a teenage Joe, he says he was "roughly 18" at the time, turned to weightlifting for solace. "I had to relieve my stress so I chose the gym."

200903110037.jpg

What originally started out as a cure for a broken heart quickly evolved into a profession, and this amateur natural bodybuilder catapulted to fame when he nabbed overall masters men and first place for novice male short class division at the 2007 International Natural Bodybuilding Association San Diego Natural Bodybuilding Championship.

Prior to his win, Joe had been racking up experience as a certified personal trainer at 24 Hour Fitness in Los Angeles and had trained a "small time Asian actor in Hollywood" for a film. Fellow actors impressed by the results turned to Joe. And once he received press for his win, word spread. Joe soon had a growing list of celebrity clients.

By 2008, he was training Hallyu star Lee Byung-hun for his upcoming Hollywood flick "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra." Then, in late August, he flew into Korea to train Lee Seung-chul, all the while staying in the singer's lush pad.

When asked how he copes with his fast track to fame, Joe answers: "To be honest, I wake up everyday and then think to myself, 'Wow!' You know? Honestly, I do, you know. I'm working right next to a superstar that people dream of meeting."

According to Joe, he meets with his clients around three to four times a week for fifty minutes a session, all the while helping them maintain a diet that includes three normal meals a day along with snacks. By snacks, Joe means peanuts, almonds, fruit or protein shakes.

Joe's clients seem pleased with the results. "Lee Seung-chul says he thinks Danny Joe is the best trainer," said a representative of the Korean singer.

"I think he has a lot of know-how and works really hard," said Lee Byung-hun's international agent. "I think Lee Byung-hun was satisfied."

Looking at Joe pose for his pictures, muscled arms flexed and six-pack on display, he looks perfectly capable of whittling even the most out-of-shape physique into a finely toned powerhouse.

Subsisting on a diet that includes grilled steak, fish, chicken breast and egg whites, Joe recommends eating two-thirds one's normal intake and working out, for example jogging for 20 to 30 minutes, prior to breakfast. "Your body burns fat as soon as you exercise, because you didn't eat anything the whole night," Joe explains.

An advocate of egg whites, Joe breaks his reasoning down. "It's the only protein source that has all the BCAA, branched-chain amino acids. So basically, it's the most powerful protein that you could consume, food-wise."

Joe puts his short-term clients on a Western diet and his long-term clients on a half Korean, half Western diet. "I apply a Western diet, because it's a high protein diet." "Protein is the only source that repairs our body, not only muscles, but everything," Joe explains.

While it sounds simple when Joe maps it out, being a trainer has its challenges. "I can't lift the weights for them. I can't eat the chicken breast for them," says Joe. "Being a trainer, it's not all about knowing how to lift weights or knowing how to give them the right nutrition, it's all about how to motivate them. So basically, it's very similar to counseling."

Naturally, Joe knows how to do all three. He also understands the difficulties of dieting and working out and allows himself and client Lee Seung-chul a "cheat day." "I do this so the body doesn't get used to a strict diet and to relieve mental stress when dieting."

On his cheat day, Joe chows down on ice cream, pizza, donuts and chocolate. On the weekdays, however, he keeps himself on a clean diet and trains. Despite his boyish face, Joe presents a formidable figure. His bodybuilder's physique and tough but laid-back voice might give a client reason to pause and worry about bulking up.

"The first thing that usually my clients tell me is that, 'Oh, I don't wanna get too big.' And then I tell them if everybody could be that big easily then everybody could become a bodybuilder."

Joe chuckles.
