[soriso] : I was involved in a music band by working group activities, but now singing a solo makes me feel a strong sense of responsibility towards myself.

[Rain] : But, one advantage of singing a solo is that the only one person can keep all the profits to himself or herself. (laughter)

And, I've heard you (Sorioso) have performed numerous charity performances.

[soriso] : Yes, I have.

[Rain] : I got a telephone warning from my master JYP when I was exaggerating too much during my concerts. (laughter)

[soriso] : It was too hard to try to restrain my feelings while I was recording my fist album.

[KCM] : I fully understand the meaning of her words.

[Rain] : Soriso. could you tell us more about your debut album and title song?

[soriso] : The title track is "The Hero".

I think my real heroes are my parents who make sacrifices themselves for their children. Sickness necessitated me change of air for a while, but I wanted to back to singing to live up to the expectations of my parents who were proud of their daughter (me). They came to see me off at the train station, and then my father slipped some spending money into my hand when I got on the train for Seoul, which brought tears to my eyes.

[Rain] : However, she's overcome the hardship and finally released an album.

For me, releasing an album was an honor in itself during my rookie season.

[KCM] : Patience is bitter, but its fruit is sweet.

And, It is said she is second to none in live performance.

[Rain] :As a live singer, I'm also second to none, I think.

[soriso] :I know Rain is awesome because he even dances while singing.

[KCM] : That's right. He is so awesome.

Jeong Nam-jin, a 31-year-old bachelor living in Doksan-dong, western Seoul, has been rocking Nike Air Force 1 mid-tops for the past three years. He’s a maniac for the classic kicks, but the real reason he sports the off-white shoes is because there are few other choices that allow him to sneak in an extra few inches in height.

“I’ve been trying so many different dress shoes and sneakers, but this is the best pair I can insert a layer of height-increasing insoles into,” said Jeong, who is 162 centimeters (5 feet, 3 inches) tall - 12 centimeters shorter than the average Korean man.

“If you pick the wrong pair of shoes like low-tops, it’s hard to insert the height increasers. You can still insert them, but it’s impossible to walk around,” added Jeong, who’s been using a variety of padding for over eight years.

The sale of height-increasing insoles has been rising steadily in Korea, with the expanding market leading companies to sell dress and casual shoes with the elevated padding already stitched in. This trend has enabled shorter men to stand as much as five to six inches taller without showing how.

Other celebrities like Rain and Jang Dong-gun, who are taller than 180 centimeters, also wear kinopi dress shoes.

When you see him smiles in the pictures that you view here, in those videos you watch, those jokes he gave to KCM when hosting, do you think what we see is what we really get? Military service, mandatory or otherwise, is an experience shared by most men in South Korea. Some look back on their time in the military with fondness, while others would rather erase those years from their memory altogether. I think RAIN is close to the latter when he gets out – hehehe. :ar!

Raising an Idol: Parents of K-Pop Stars

May 8th was Parents’ Day in South Korea. It was a day for many Korean children, young and old, to acknowledge the impact and sacrifices their parents have made upon their lives. There has been many K-pop songs dedicated to parents, most notably g.o.d.’s “To My Mother”, and recently two singles by BtoB and Psy, both titled “Father”, the latter’s single being re-released for free last week on Parents’ Day. Korean culture, as well as other cultures influenced by Confucianism and neo-Confucianism, place a lot of value upon filial piety and respect for their parents on a regular basis, so Parents’ Day seems a little heavy-handed. Nevertheless, when I heard that BtoB and Psy released songs for their fathers, I’ll admit, I got a little teary. I’m always a sucker for anyone who takes a lot of time and effort into making their parents happy, so whenever I hear about an idol buying a business for their parents, or crying over the hardships their parents faced, the idol’s likeability increases tenfold.

But aren’t there parents who are adamantly against their children becoming idols? The always disapproving Asian parent stereotype is a trope that has been reiterated by Asians and non-Asians alike, especially over career choices. However, a parent being opposed to their child entering the K-pop industry seems like the logical, and believable, reaction to their child’s decision to become an idol. The K-pop industry is a difficult industry to break into, and it requires a lot of physical and mental stress, as well as a loss of privacy and ownership of one’s identity. It’s not surprising that a parent would be wary of a child’s desire to be an idol, an, just as unsurprising, is the refusal of their children to let go of their dreams to be idols, which could result in them fleeing home to follow their dreams, the most noteworthy of cases being Kahi of After School, JYJ’s Jaejoong, and Kim Hyun-joong. This would cause a rift between parent and child, and even parent to parent. 2PM’s Wooyoung revealed that his parents’ almost separated over their opposing views on his dreams to become a dancer. However, most idols who had parents initially disapprove of their dreams, slowly ease up to their child’s decision, especially after their child eventually succeeds in becoming an idol. However, sometimes parents are not able to see their child gain success in the entertainment industry. An example of this is Rain, whose mother passed away before he became a popular soloist. His mother struggled to take care of their family after her husband, Rain’s father, abandoned them. I can’t imagine the pain that Rain must have felt after his mother’s passing, and it’s amazing that he managed to maintain a successful career after her death.

Being a parent is difficult. The decisions a parent want to make for their children is an attempt to do what’s best for them. Mistakes will always made when one raises children; mistakes are inevitable, and comes with being human. Parents try to support the decisions their children makes for themselves, even if it conflicts with what they think is right for their children. Parents of idols should be lauded for supporting their children and the pain and regret they may feel when they are unable to protect their children from scandals and violence committed by anti-fans. Idols do their best to protect their parents from the threat of netizens and anti-fans, and the stress of avoiding public scrunity must be difficult to handle. Fans should thank idol parents that supported their children through thick and thin, for better or worse, and hope that the Korean government will be more strict with laws to prevent trainees and their parents from being exploited by entertainment companies. Without these parents, none of the idols we know and love today would have existed, so I think they deserve our support, no?

I was thinking, we have almost June and that means almost 13 months left before Rain is released. The time goes fast by and I like it.

bbly, thinking that time flies so fast still it's very long.....But, you know, I'm excited & also curious that when he gets out from the Army I wonder if he's retaining that short hair or have it long again. Right now, every time we see him he always wear that military cap or

sometimes when he's in casual performing he usually wear a beanie. Definitely his hair right now is short & flat top & not dyed hair

standards in the military. Even women soldier, their haircuts must be “non-eccentric” with “no-faddish styles,” leaving them

“conservative” and “professional.” Medium or short hair may be worn but long hair must be secured by clips…Good, that RAIN is not

into tattoo because that is also prohibited. No tattoos can be “visible". No contact lenses as well is allowed only spectacle that’s issued

by the Army. Aish...........so many Army prohibitions, huh? :
