벌써 연예계 10년차랍니다.”<스크린> 인터뷰는 그날의 마지막 일정이었다. 앞서 빠듯하게여러 인터뷰를 소화한 그녀는 이 자리에 도착할 때까지 한 끼의 식사도 할 수 없었다.인터뷰를 위해 마련한 테이블은 불가피하게 그녀의 짧은 만찬장으로 변했다.조금은 불안한 마음이들었던 것도 사실이다. 아까운 인터뷰 시간을 다 잡아먹을 것같았기 때문이다. 이때 그녀가 분주하게 식사를 하고 있는 스태프들 사이로 고개를 내밀며 이렇게 말했다.“이제 인터뷰를시작할까요?”시간을 보니 시침은커녕 분침도 얼마 지나지 않은 시간이었다. 그녀의 입맛이 오늘따라 유독 없었던 것일까.여전히 식사를하는 주변 스태프들을 제치고 그녀가 녹음기 마이크 앞으로 바싹 다가와 앉았다. 허리를 곧게펴고 눈을 커다랗게 뜬 채.‘일할’준비가 되었다는 무언의 암시였다. 인터뷰가 모두 끝나고 나서야 그녀가 이모든 상황을 세밀하게염려하고 체크했다는 걸 알게 되었다. 식사 시간을 끝낸 타이밍이 꽤 적절했던 것도 단순히 우연만은 아니다. 간단히 말해, 그녀는 일에 있어서 철저한 프로페셔널이다. 작고놓치기 쉬운 부분 까지 의식하며, 일상의 소소한 부분까지 자연 스럽게포장할 수 있는 재주가 있다. 나이어린 스타들이 부리기 쉬운짜증 섞인 푸념과 게으름 같은 건 찾아볼 수 없다. 물론 자신이 원하는 바를 양보하지 않되, 상대방과 적절히 타협할 수있는 지점도 잘 포착해낸다. 만약 송혜교가 드라마 에서처럼 수동적이고 내성적인 여자라고 생각했다면, 혹은 여러모로 부족한 20대 젊은이에 불과하다고 생각했다면, 그녀가 인터뷰내내강조했던 이 말을 들려주고 싶다.“제가벌써 연예계 10년차거든요?”순수하고 어리게 보인다고 해서, 배우로서 만만치않은이 경력을 염두에 두지 않으면 곤란하다. 그녀는 말도많고 탈도 많은 연예계에서 10년 동안 살아남은, 나름대로 관록 있는베테랑 연기자다.

전 비판에 겁먹지 않거든요?”그래서인지 그녀의 답변에선 군더더기를 찾기 힘들었다. 모든말이 칼 같이 명확하고 목소리엔 생기가 가득하다. <가을동화>에서 보여준 파리한 표정과 힘없는 목소리(그래서 연민을 자극했던)는 흔적도 찾을 수 없다. 말도 빠르다. 거짓말 약간보태면 <순풍 산부인과> 시절이 연상될 정도다. 물론 10년 동안거르지 않은 인터뷰에 익숙해진 탓도 있지만, 이번엔 유독 할말이 많은 모양이었다. 그녀는 영화 홍보를 위해 끊임없이 이어지는 인터뷰 (똑같은 질문과 답을 수없이 반복해야 하는)가조금 힘에 부치긴 하지만, 자신에 대해 조금씩 다르게 말하는것이 재미있다고까지 말했다. 연기에 뛰어든 지 10년 만에 출연한 첫영화 <파랑주의보>에 대한 애정이 남다른 눈치다.“스무 살 때부터 시나리오가 들어왔지만 거들떠 보지도 않았어요<가을동화>로 주목받는 연기를 했다고 하지만, 사실그땐 사랑한 번 해보지 않았던 시절이었거든요. 모든 것이 설익어 있는듯한, 그런 모습을 스크린에 드러내는 게 싫었어요. 작은텔레비전에도 못하는 연기가 드러나는데, 커다란 스크린에서는 오죽하겠어요. 지금은 사랑도 해봤고, 이런 저런 사람도 만나봤고, 사회생활도 해봤고, 사람들의 보편적인 느낌을 어느 정도 알았으니까 영화를 할 수 있다는 생각이 든 것 같아요. 또 지금 영화에 나오지 않으면 아주늦어질 것 같고. 지금도 늦었다는 사람이 있지만(웃음), 난적당한 시기라고 생각해요. <파랑주의보>는 그래서 내게 첫사랑 같이 소중한 영화죠.”<파랑주의보>는 그녀의 첫 영화 지만 이제까지 연기한 캐릭터와 크게다르지 않은, 어찌 보면 기존 이미지의 연장선에 있는 작품이다. 미안한 얘기지만, 안전한 선택이 한편으로는 이미지의 재탕으로 비춰질 수도 있을 것 같았다. 대중들은 스타들의 모습에 쉽게 식상해하고 언제나 또다른 새로움을 요구하는 법이니까. 혹자는 그녀를 <파랑주의보> 에서 병에 걸려 무균실에 격리된 수은의 상황에 빗대 말하기도 했다. 안전한 무균실에 들어가 똑같은 이미지만 복제한다는 날선 비판인 셈이다. 이 같은 지적을 하자 그녀의 답변이 부메랑처럼 재빠르게 돌아왔다“전 비판에 겁먹지 않거든요?”그녀는 여유있는 목소리로 조목조목 <파랑주의보>를 첫 영화로 선택한 이유에 대해 들려주었다.“어떤 분들은 지겹다는듯 이번 영화에서도 또병으로 죽냐고 묻더라고요. 알고 보면 내가 죽은건<가을동화> 한편뿐이거든요?(웃음) 아마 <가을동화>의 기억이 워낙 강렬해서 그런가 봐요. 아무리 항변해도 영화 분위기가 전작들과 유사한 탓에 내가 달라진게 없다고 판단하는 분들이 많을 거예요. 아마‘송혜교는 언제나 똑같아’혹은‘연기도 제자리걸음이네?’라는 소리를 좀 듣겠죠. 하지만 이영화를 선택한 건 잘했다고생각해요. 내연기가 스크린에서 어떻게 나올지 아무도 모르잖아요? 한 걸음씩 밟아가자는 생각을 했어요. 그래서 내게익숙하고 제일 자신 있는 것부터 시작하기로 한 거죠. 그게 <파랑주의보>예요.”

“난 더 이상‘착한’배우가 아니에요.” 한때 그녀도 자신의 연기가 지겨운 적이 있었다고 한다. 시트콤과 단막극을 제외하고, 일곱 편의 주연 드라마에서 맡은 캐릭터가 거의 비슷했기 때문이다.“제 자신에게 싫증이 나더라고요. 정도의 차이는 있지만 기본적인 캐릭터의 틀은 항상 비슷했으니까. 나도 그런데 그런 나를 보는 시청자 들은 얼마나지겨울까요?”그나마 류승범과 함께 한 <햇빛 쏟아지다>가 정체되어 있는 이미지에서 벗어날 수 있는 절호의 기회였다. 이드라마에서 그녀는 세상과 괴리된 듯 아름답고 청순한 여인의굴레에서 벗어나, 보이시하고 억척스러운‘보통사람’의 캐릭터를 보여준다. 또 이역할은 그녀에게 새로운 연기의‘맛’을선사해주기도 했다.“<햇빛 쏟아지다>전까지 감독님이 하란대로 다 하는‘착한’배우였어요. 이 작품을 하면서‘아 연기에이런 재미가 있구나’깨달았어요. 그때부터인것 같아요. 감독님에게 제 의견을 적극적으로 전달하면서 스스로 캐릭터를 새롭게 구축해 나가기 시작한 게. 사실 내게 들어오는 시나리오는 대부분 비슷해요. 그만큼 이미지가 한정되어 있는거죠. 이젠 좀변하고 싶어요. <친절한 금자씨>의 이영애 선배 처럼 저음으로 카리스마를 발산하는 연기도 해보고 싶고, <롤리타>처럼 유혹적이고 몽환적인 캐릭터도 맡고 싶고. 아,도전하고 싶은 게 너무 많아요.”지금은 무덤덤 하게 변화의 지점을 설명할 수 있지만, 틀을 깨는 작업이 쉽지만은 않았던 듯하다. 예전 그녀는 간이 무척 나빠진 적이 있었다. 술 때문이 아닐까(그녀가 포도주를 좋아한다는 첩보를 입수한 바 있다), 라고막연히 예상하는 기자에게 그녀는 가슴을 통통 두드리며 말했다“전형적인 A형이거든요.(웃음) 옛날엔 답답하고 화나는 일이있어도 전혀 표현을 하지 못했어요. 속으로 끝도 없이 삭히는편이었죠. 지금은 의사 표현에 적극적이지만 예전에는 그렇지못했어요. 그렇게 스트레스가 쌓이다 보니 술도 많이 안 마셨는데 간수치가 높아진 거죠. 우유부단하게 가만히 있으니까당하는 일도 많아지더라고요. 왜 우리나라 사람들은 잘해주거나친절하면 더 우습게보고 막하는 성향이 있잖아요? 그렇게여러번 뒤통수 맞다보니까 이렇게 살면 안 되겠다 싶었죠. 하하”

“연기 말고는 딱히 잘하는 게 없네요.”만약 그녀가 심한 속앓이를 했다면 그건 최근 일일 수도 있겠다. 사랑하는 사람과 헤어지고, 한때 측근이었던 사람에게 협박을 받는 등, 유감스런 일들이 꼬리를 물고 이어졌기 때문이다. 시간이 어느 정도 흘렀고, 씩씩해졌다고 하지만,‘전형적인 A형’이라는 그녀의 말로 미루어 보면 좀처럼 씻기지 않는상처일 수도 있을 것 같았다. 아무리 프로정신이 투철한 그녀라 해도 그쯤 되면 모든 걸 팽개치고 싶을 수도 있지 않을까?“힘들긴 힘들었어도, 모든 걸 때려 치고 싶을 정도의 환멸감이 든 건 아니에요. 내가 구설수에 오르는 건 당연해요. 자업자득이니까.(웃음) 또 매스컴에서 떠드는 것도 연예인인 이상 감내해야 하는 거죠. 웃으면서 낙천적 으로 생각했어요. 내게관심이 있으니까 이런기사도 써주는 거겠지, 관심도없다면 이슈화 되지도 않았겠지, 라고요.”얼마 전 장동건은 인터뷰 에서 자신이‘공인’으로 자리매김되는 것이 싫다고 말했다. 배우 혹은 연예인의 일거수일투족이 주목받고 또 도덕적 잣대로평가되는 것에 대해 불만을 피력한 것이다. 그녀 에게도 벗어던지고 싶은‘공인’으로서의 짐 같은게 있을 것 같았는데,그녀는 이마저도 홀가분 하게 생각하는 듯했다.“연예인이 자신을 공인으로 여기지 말아달라고 호소해서 뭐가달라지나요? 그건 우리들 생각일 뿐이지요. 사람들이 이미 다 공인으로 생각하고 있는 걸요? 하하.”이쯤 되니 <파랑주의보> 에서 교복을입은 그녀의 모습이 조금 어색해보이기도 한다. 외견상으론영화 속 수은과 맞춤복처럼 잘 어울리지만, 내적으론 중견 배우다운(?) 조숙한 생각들을 품고 있는 것 같았기 때문이다(그래서 그녀는 선배 배우인 이미연과 최지우와 급속도로 가까워질수 있었던 게 아닐까? 그녀는 최근가장 친해진 배우로 이미연과 최지우를 꼽았다). 그녀는 여행을, 특히 뚜벅 뚜벅 걸어서하는 여행을좋아한다고 한다. 샌프란시스코에서 혼자 한달 여를 걸어서 여행하기도 했다.‘걷는다’는 그녀의 여행 지론은그녀가 밟아온 배우로서의 행보와 맞닿는 구석이있다. 그녀는서둘지 않고, 천천히 한 스텝씩 배우로서 성장기를 거쳐 갔다처음 데뷔했을 땐 고개 돌리는 것도, 자연스럽게 걷는것도 쉽지 않았다(심지어 그녀는 걸음을 옮길 때 왼팔과 왼발이 함께움직이는 우스꽝스러운 실수를 하기도 했다고 한다). 또 체구가‘아담’하다는 콤플렉스도 서서히 극복해갔다. 물론 그 체형을 자신만의 매력으로 만들기까진 오랜 시간이 필요했다. 배우의 길을 걷게 된 걸 후회한 적은 없어요. 가끔 배우가 아니면 무엇을 할 수 있을까 생각해 봐요. 근데 이거 말고는 딱히 잘하는 게 없는 걸요?”연예계10년차, 사랑도 해봤고 사회경험도 튼실하게 쌓은, 이 조숙한 20대 중반의 여배우가 비로소 스크린 앞에 선다. 이정도면 완벽하게 준비된 영화계의 신예가아닐까? 충무로에‘혜교주의보’가 요란하게 발령되는 건이제 시간문제인 듯하다.

yeah, about the rating I know what you mean...this is off-topic again btw...take for example "the last dance is with me" - the rating was not all that high, but it's one of my fav k-dramas, so ratings don't necessarily indicate the quality and value of the drama itself and of course this is subjective

i know wat u mean about the ratings thing...oohh, u saw save the last dance too? i loved that drama! that was the first real korean drama that really got me hooked
