  1. So Hoo explains to KH why he'd hired JS. To stop anyone else getting her designs, and to sideline the Luna project (and JH along with it) while concentrating Shinwha's future efforts on KM's team, which is following through KH's idea of franchising the designs of foreign firms and modifying them for the Korean market. He intends to use the sidelined Luna project as a temporary "pacemaker" for KM's team to keep them on their toes until they succeed and the Luna project and its members can be dropped, ensuring that HS's protegé KM  displaces JH in his grandfather's favor and becomes CEO.  Yoo Ara is, of course, a spy and potential saboteur. JS hasn't shed enough of her former daftness not to see through her.

  2. I just took a quick scan through eps 11, 12  and 13 and the posts here about  ep 13. A lot of puzzles should be cleared up by the ep 13 subs, but here are a few pointers, in no particular order,  to help anyone wanting to tackle today's live stream.

    JS had quickly figured out that the tale about that being a "friend who's away in Italy's house" was made up so she wouldn't object to taking refuge there. She's sitting on the doorstep after coming back from her visit first to DY's house then to the island because she doesn't know the entry code. But she uses that fact to trick JH into admitting it's really his house. She asks him what his birthday is, then keys that into the lock and the door opens immediately. She snidely remarks that JH and his friend must be really close for the "friend" to use JH's birthday as his entry code.  He admits he lied about that, but explains that it was the only way to get her to accept the shelter she needed. She says she appreciates that and is grateful and doesn't hold the deception against him, but now she knows it's his house she can't possibly spend another night there (hence her packing ready to leave).

    The bit where she goes stern and silent at the kitchen table is her response to JH probing into her relationship with MK. Not because she has anything to hide (though that's how JH misinterprets it) but because she thinks, and says, it's none of his business.

    Re DY finding the torn-up picture, yes, her first reaction is to  become even more worried about KH's mental state, but several times characters have remarked on the resemblance between JS and her mother. I think that's meant to feed into an eventual recognition sequence, too.

    As for the last part of ep 13 and JS's reversal of fortunes, three separate strands here.

    1) JS has been working away at a new portfolio of designs which she has submitted to several companies. They are all impressed and all call her in for a meeting, but in every case she's told that because of the bad publicity surrounding the Luna project, even though she's been cleared of plagiarism, they can't risk associating her name with their brand. So the suggestion is that she should work as a freelancer, selling her individual designs and the rights to them to the company concerned, but under strict obligation never to reveal that she is the actual designer.  She rejects all those proposals at first, but finally concludes that there's no other way for her to earn her keep, so she is about to accept the most favorable offer of that kind she's received, but then at the very last minute pulls back.

    2) JS is invited to the shoot of the CF for the home shopping service which will feature her bags (and her uncle has also been invited, though he arrives late and enters sheepishly. The person she asks can she rearrange the bags to show off the range of colors more effectively is the home shopping company representative who commissioned her to make the bags. There's no connection with the fashion bag manufacturers.

    3) As a side effect about the sensational story of the plagiarism allegations and Red Milan's refutation of them, the actual design involved, now unquestionably recognized as JS's, has attracted widespread attention on the Internet, with numerous people posting about how great the bag looks and how much they'd love to buy one if it was manufactured.  Armed with that evidence that her design is a goldmine for any company that has the rights to manufacture it, she goes to Shinwha and does some very straight talking with Soo Ho. First off, she demands an apology from him for allowing her dismissal, even though he suspected she was innocent. He refuses point-blank to apologize, repeating what he said to her on previous occasions, namely that he didn't care about the personal rights or wrongs of the matter, all the mattered was the business impact, and in the circumstances he made what he thought was the right business decision. In which case, JH says, they should talk business right now. She has a design here that the public are crying out for and that she could easily sell to any of Shinwha's rivals, giving them the fashion hit of the season. But she's prepared to let Shinwha have it ... provided they make her an official designer.  An offer he can't refuse, and she knows it.  Hence her appointment is all down to her (unrecognized) father's hard-nosed approach which forces him to recognize her as a business asset with the same determination that he callously discarded her when he thought she was a business liability.



  3. Haven't had time yet to catch up with last week's episodes, or with this thread, but here's my translation of the text preview for ep 14 which has just gone up.

    Jeong Soo is taken on as official designer for the Luna project, but after the setback it has suffered, the Luna project has a hard time competing against the team lead by Seo Hyeon which is adapting foreign imports.


    In order to produce samples of Jeong Soo's designs, the Luna team is assigned its own technician, Kim Dae Pung, but he's an opinionated man who doesn't listen to other people.


    Joon Seong goes to a gallery where she encounters Do Yeong again. But Do Yeong completely fails to recognize her and coldly rebukes her for what happened to Seo Hyeon.

I must say when I saw the bit in the preview about KH crashing into JH (probably means just a low-speed shunt with minor fender-denting, but we won't know till next week) I couldn't help thinking of Son Eun Seo's character in My Daughter Flower (a much bigger and more demanding role than she had in Love Rain) which in many ways is similar to her part here, including a guilty secret plaguing her which is the key to the fates of most of the characters, including the OTP. 

    That secret is that the female lead's father died and the male lead's younger "brother" - there's a birth secret there that calls for the quotes - was severely brain-damaged in a hit and run that she caused while driving her older brother's sports car drunk and without a license, a fact that only her mother is aware of. Her father, ignorant of his daughter's guilt but suspicious of her character and very much under his scheming wife's thumb, is in some ways very reminiscent of JS's uncle, except that he isn't in any way complicit in his daughter's crime or his wife's concealment of it, and when he does find out he compells his wife and daughter to go down on their knees to the injured families and admit their guilt.

    It does look as though that role helped to profile Son Eun Seo as a good candidate for casting as Kyeong Hee in this drama.

    Ah. It's stopped raining. Onwards and upwards!

  5. Strangely, torrential rain halfway up a Scottish mountain seems to improve the cellphone signal a little, but not enough to get any watchable video. However, here's my translation of the text preview for ep 13

    Seo Hyeon (=Kyeong Hee) crashes into Jin Hoo in the Shinwha parking lot and uses the accident as a pretext for continuing to try to get close to him.


    Homeless and jobless, Jeong Soo tries to find work elsewhere, but when she's recognised, people will discuss possibly buying her designs, but not one company is prepared to take her on as an employee.


    Meanwhile, the bag Jeong Soo designed has started to become a sensation on the Internet, and as a result, she is taken on by the Luna Project as an official designer.

  6. Hmmph!   Grrrr!

    Can't even get a strong enough signal to peek at jtbc's YT clips up here, but I can just about pull in the text preview for ep 12, so here's my translation.

     
    When she discovers that the person Do Yeong adopted instead of her was Kyeong Hee, Jeong Soo is distraught with shock.

    Under the impact of this shock, she leaves her aunt's house,  but does not [VERB MISSING HERE IN THE KOREAN] the fact that she has run away from home, and Ji Hoon takes her to his house.

    Meanwhile, the Luna project cannot shake off the stigma of having supposedly stolen a design from Red Milan, and the whole project is in jeopardy.



  7. I'm still bothered about how this stuff about JS saying to her Uncle she's heard from Do Yeong in the US fits in. I can't see how that makes sense, unless it's a tale JS has invented to explain to her family why she is in such deep depression. After all, if she did get some sort of message from the US purporting to be from DY, why would she believe it to be genuine, since she's seen DH in Seoul with her own eyes, and MK has established that DH is living there, in a house with her name etched in very expensive marble on the doorpost, showing that she's not just back in some rented apartment for a passing visit.

    One thing strikes me as a possible solution to that riddle. Whatever  KH tells MK and no matter how much of the (half-) truths he's heard from KH MK actually passes on to JS, it may be that JS makes a private self-sacrificial decision not to reveal herself to DY, presumably for what KH will misrepresent, as @shaselai has suggested, as DY's own best interests.  It could be that that's robbing JS of the will to live (as well as causing JH to lose out on his bag-making lessons), and she's just making up some story about DY having sent word that she doesn't want to know anything about her to explain to her Uncle why she is so devastated.

    But the tail end of the teaser suggests that JS subsequently finds out something else that sends her to the house (probably in the final few minutes of next Tuesday's episode) despite her earlier decision, presumably something that proves to her that whatever MK conveyed to her based on what KH told him was less than the truth.  The clip of KH back-hugging her mother and saying she's scared JS might turn up at the house the very next day could refer to her state of mind when she still thinks that JS has swallowed whatever tale she fed her but fears that she won't stay fooled for long. Then she gets the text message from her mother telling her that JS has found out "everything" (her mother's text combines the "find out" component with another verb which in this context indicates that JS "finding out" is a huge disaster and KH and her mother are done for).  Of course, as ever, the editing of the teaser may be leading us way up the garden path or off the cliff-top.

    I will be in the wilder parts of Scotland (= no coffee shops with WfFi, and very flakey 3G coverage - don't even think of 4G up there) next week, so probably won't be able to get either a stream or a download till I'm back the following weekend.

  8. I've now watched all of ep 10 with subs on DF, and I'd say pretty much the same things as for the ep 9 subs. A welcome improvement on the subbing in some of the earlier episodes.

    But the subbers are having still having trouble catching the distinctive tone and pattern of dialogue between JH and JS, which is so important to the overall feel of this drama.  Especially in the sequence early on, where the start was mischievously hacked about by the teaser editors to make it sound as though JH was asking JS to accept his heart along with the cellphone, when in the actual episode he of course said no such thing (though he was most likely thinking it).

    It begins with the lines where JS, having answered the door to JH shortly before midnight, supposedly asks him "Can't you make me feel comfortable?" and he replies "Then what about me?", a translated exchange that I'd find pretty puzzling without hearing the Korean behind it. The translation improves after that, but here's my alternative version anyway.

    JS: Aren't you bothered how I feel?


    JH: So what about my feelings, then? Think about it. We agreed you'd treat this like a present from Santa Claus. And now you don't want it, so you just dump it back on me. Can't you see how hurtful and disappointing that is?


    JS: But you aren't really Santa Claus, are you?


    JH: True, but I'm still a human being with human feelings. And anyway, it's second-hand goods now.


    JS: Alright, I'll pay you what it's worth.


    JH: You don't even have a part-time job now, so where's the money coming from?


    JS: That's my problem. It won't be a lump sum, of course. But I'll repay you bit by bit.


    JH: Well, it doesn't have to be in money. You could give me something else.


    JS: Such as what?


    JH: You're an expert in bag making, aren't you? Not just designing them, but making the patterns, cutting out the material, sewing it together...


    JS: Sure, I can do that stuff. It's all I've ever done since I was nine.


    JH: Then instead of giving me cash, teach me all that. For an hour or two, every day. Or make that just one hour a day then, if you're so busy.


    JS: But what's in that for you?


    JH: I'm boss of a bag company. I ought to know how to make the things, surely?


    JS: Then why not ask Ms Oh or Mr Kim from the workshop? They're the experts.


    JH: Because I'd feel silly asking them, of course. And anyway, it wouldn't work out with them. You wouldn't be scared to tell me off or laugh at me. So I'd really learn things. ... Ah well, I might have known... You don't think I'm serious, do you?


    JS: I'll give it some thought.


    JH: What? About whether I'm serious?


    JS: No. About whether to teach you bag-making or not.


    JH: You know your problem? It's always "Yes, sir", "No sir", but then you turn round and do just whatever you want.


    JS: Sorry about that.


    JH: You've no idea when I'm joking, have you?


    JS: That day nine years back... after you'd accused me at the flea-market of copying a La Mina design, I waited two whole hours for you outside the Shinwha HQ.


    JH: You're so pig-headed. Why be such an idiot? You should have given up after five minutes.


    JS: I didn't like being wrongly accused... So, I guess you must have showed up there, too, a bit later?


    JH: Sure. That's how I came by that photo. I went back next day to the flea market, but you weren't there. A girl told me you had an exam or something.


    JS: You came looking for me? Why?


    JH: Because I realized you weren't guilty of copying, of course. So I thought I owed you an apology.


    JS: I guess I accept your apology, then.


    JH: In that case, don't give up this time round, either. There's got to be some way of clearing your name.

I don't have time right now to look at the DF-subbed version of  ep 10 the  whole way through, but I did just quickly check out the teaser sequence for ep 11 at the very end to get a "second opinion" on my efforts at translating the video preview, and it looks like the DF subber heard more or less the same things there that I did. Except that in the DF subs for that sequence, the failure to translate unspoken items that are read off-screen bites again, so anyone reliant on those subs wouldn't know the real humdinger in that sequence, namely the content of the text message we see KH getting from her mother as translated in my version.

  10. The staring-glaring freeze frame twosome, threesome or foursome at the cliffhanger is something of a jtbc hallmark, even though you get it from time to time on other networks too. But nearly every episode of the previous 150-ep jtbc daily Thorn Flower ended with a shot of that kind, and that's carrying on with their current daily Can't Take it Any More as well.

I just now managed to get a look at the DF subs for ep 9, and  I'm glad to say they are much better than the ones for the previous few episodes, and not only because most of the on-screen-only text is translated. Most of the way through, the tone and flow and English idiom, aside from a few typos, are far superior, so the subs no longer distract the viewers instead of drawing them into the drama. Although, we're still stuck with "jerk face" for JS's "Cucumber Prince" nickname for JH, which is just vulgar and rude, rather than cutely cheeky.

    There are just a few things I think might have been done better. The first dialogue between JH and JS after she shows up outside her house in MK's company is not translated nearly as well as the later exchanges. The DF subs run:

    JH:  Can I ask you a question? It's none of my business. But this is driving me crazy so I'm going to ask you. Don't give me lip and just humor me will you? What's going on between you and Min Ki? You see him every weekend and he's taking you home.

    JS: He's just helping me out and why can't he take me home?

    JH: What is he helping you with?

    JS: I'm not going to answer that. What about you then? Why should I be the only one giving an explanation?

    JH: I'm not telling on purpose! Whatever! I don't know why I'm curious. I just wanted to know.


    That translation "I'm not telling on purpose" should trigger the "if it's daft, it's wrong" alarm, though admittedly it's not so much daft as incomprehensible. But the earlier lines are also further from the color and texture of the Korean than they need to be. I'd have translated the same lines like this:

    JH: There's just one thing I want to ask you.  You may think I'm nosey or crazy, but it's driving me nuts, so I'll ask you anyway. Don't ask me why I want to know, just give me a straight answer, OK?  What is there between you and Min Ki? You meet up every weekend, and he even brings you home.

    JS: There's just something he's helping me with... And what's wrong with him bringing me home?

    JH: So what's this 'something' he's 'just' helping you with?

    JS: You didn't answer my question, so I won't answer yours. If you won't say what this is about, why should I tell you anything?

    JH: But I'm not deliberately hiding anything! ... Oh, what the heck! I don't know myself why I'm so keen to know. I've no idea why I asked...


    Things pick up, translation-wise, when we cut to the corresponding exchange between KH and MK after he pulls the car over at her insistence so she can grill him. But here, too, we can get closer to the feel of the original dialogue in places. For instance, according to the subs, KH tells MK

    Min Ki, you always think with your heart. Don't let your emotions get the best of you and blind you from the truth.

    An attentive viewer may wonder why the Korean behind that second sentence audibly has a lot more words than the English sub. Added to which "blind you from the truth" is not acceptable English usage, though "from" may just be a typo for "to". But there's more in the Korean than the sub reveals.

    My translation of that line would be

    You always let your heart rule your head, don't you? But you've got to realize: if your emotions take over, you end up blind to truth that's staring you in the face.

    That last part ties in too well with the motif of "there are none so blind as those who will not see" that pervades this drama for me to be happy about the sub "losing" it in that way. It also brings home that KH is quite deliberately administering a hurtful reminder to MK that he got so hurt by her precisely because he was blind to the truth that she was ultimately only interested in him on account of his supposed wealth, and that she is now nastily insinuating that JS is trying to seduce him because of his position. so she's doing him a great favor by warning him off.

    Then on to JS's confrontation with KH in her office, where according to the subs, JS tells KH

    You can't hide from the truth. 

    Two problems there. JS certainly isn't accusing KH of hiding "from" the truth. Quite the opposite, She's saying they both know what the truth is, but that KH is trying to hide it from everyone else, not from herself. And this is another case where a viewer will notice that there are a whole lot more words in JS's line than the snappy little sub can account for.  I'd translate it as

    No matter how hard you try to hide the truth, it won't stay hidden for ever.

    I think it's very important to get that line of JS's right, because the writer is deliberately pairing it with a line of JH's in the next scene, where he's criticizing his grandfather's ruthless "PR above fairness" attitude which cheerfully sacrifices a "mere part-timer" if the reputation of the company is at stake.
    JS asks him, according to the DF subs:

    Grandfather, why do you think automobile companies are willing to risk their reputation and still recall their products? Ultimately, it will come out.

    But that needs to be translated in a way the brings out the verbal parallel in the Korean to what we just heard JS tell KH. So a better version of JH's line would be:

    Grandfather, why do you think automobile makers issue recalls, even though it dents their image? Because they know the truth will emerge eventually, one way or another.

    This is one of several subtle ways in which the writer points up that JS and JH are on the same wavelength and have basically the same expectations of themselves and others. Such pointers need to come across as strongly in English as they do in Korean if the full experience the writer is aiming at is to be conveyed.

    And finally, another little bit that the subs trim off, but which I think might just prove important later in the plot. It's when KH is sucking up to DY over the pasta, making a big show of "remembering" the first meal she had at DY's house (though of course she can't "remember" what the real JS would surely recall, that after a couple of mouthfuls they had to abandon that meal because her cystitis kicked in and she had to be rushed to hospital in agony.)   We get a flashback showing that KH is faking this memory from the tidbits she grilled the teenage JS about before she left for the States. In the subs, KH recalls how, back then, JS told her

    We made spaghetti together and played hide and seek as well.

    This is another point where a viewer may notice a misfit between the Korean sentence, which audibly falls into three phrases, and the English, which has only two.  The reason for that is that the Korean means more like

    We made spaghetti together, and played hide and seek in the villa, and I fell asleep where I was hiding.

    The reason why I think it's unwise to drop that last bit is that it just might prove to be the sort of detail that will play a part in the unmasking of KH.  Since we've no means of knowing exactly how that unmasking will come about, it's not wise to drop anything from the subs that may be drawn on later in the plot.

  13. Ep 11 text preview is now up.

    To help Jeong Soo, Min Ki tracks down Do Yeong and discovers that Kyeong Hee was adopted into Do Yeong's family instead of Jeong Soo.

    Meanwhile, terrified that Do Yeong will find out how she was tricked into adopting her in place of Jeong Soo, Kyeong Hee plans to have Jeong Soo sent to study abroad.

    Jin Ho, determined to establish Jeong Soo's innocence, leaks a story that Red Milan allegedly stole the design from Shinwha, causing Red Milan to produce evidence that Jeong Soo's design has nothing to do with them at all.


    Amazing how "studying abroad" is always the catch-all remedy in Kdramas, as if "abroad" was another planet, or indeed another galaxy.

  14. Incidentally, for those wondering whether we'd ever get to see Soo Ho's wife again, that was her in the department store with her lifelong friend Do Yeong (and getting a call from her husband explaining he'd be back later than expected, but not of course letting on that that was because he was going to indulge in some conscience-airing on a cliff-top, missing JS's visit to the same cliff-top to talk to the same deceased person by a matter of mere minutes.

    Another potential title that could fit dozens of Kdramas: I near-missed you.

  16. The ep 10 text preview has only just gone up. Disappointingly, it follows the now usual pattern of wasting the first third "previewing" what already happened, but this time all the rest of it does is repeat things which were obvious enough from the video teaser with less info than the video itself reveals.

    Anyway, for what little it's worth...

    JS, who had been working as a part-time assistant in the design studio at Shinwha Fashions [Wow, whaddya know?!! Thanks a bunch for telling us that, buddy] can no longer work at the company because of the trouble over the copied design.

    JS gets a part-time job in a department store, where she spots Do Yeong getting into the elevator. Upset and excited, she tells Min Gi about this and he says he will ask a detective friend of his to track Do Yeong down.

    And it turns out that the house where she lives is also Seo Hyeon/Keong Hee's home...

    The video teaser, OTOH, is a teaser indeed and is much jucier.

    We start with a sentence of JS deliberately chopped in half, and JH's reply similarly hacked about, but the impression we get is that he's tried to give her the phone back, as he said he would "next time" they met, and she's initially refusing it, saying that since she won't be seeing him again how can she accept the phone. At which he then comes back with "how about [accepting] my heart, then?"  [OK ladies, go get yourselves a nice cool drink, I'll carry on in a moment. And remember, these teasers are often not what they seem to be]

    [Calmed down a bit, have we?  Right, onward I go...]

    Then in the elevator, JH is looking very pleased with himself as he pointedly tells MK that he's succeeded in giving the cellphone back to JS, a remark which both Min Ki and the viewers suspect means rather more than it says.

    The scene of the uncle and Soo Ho recognizing each other in the company corridor is accompanied by the voiceover of the uncle furiously asking him how could have done such a crime [?as the dismissal of JS?], then we cut to SH standing on the cliff where JS's mother's ashes were scattered and apologizing to her for having had no choice but to heartlessly abandon her, though he'd intended to go looking for her.

    Then we see JS spotting DY, at the store where she's apparently now working, but unable to catch up with her.  We next hear JS telling (presumably) MK in great excitement that not only that she's absolutely sure she's seen "her ajumma" in Seoul but that she's verified her name, Woo Do Yeong, with Min Ki thereupon promising that he's determined to track her down for her, and there's a former fellow-student of his who's now a detective who should be able to help out.

    Finally we see Min Ki arriving at the house, and reading to his astonishment on the gatepost alongside the name Woo Do Yeong a name he recognizes very well: Kim Jong Wook. And while he's gaping at that, up rolls KH and asks him what on earth he's doing there. He seems to ask her a question immediately in return (though that may be an editing trick) inquiring whether she's possibly known all about JS right from the start, although we guess that his notion of "all" that there is to know about the situation falls some way short of the full story, so that despite KH's visible panic at that question (presumably at the cliffhanger of today's episode) she will be able to find a way round the problem.

  17. As I've said several times before, the uncle certainly doesn't know that SH is JS's father. It's unthinkable that he'd have let his sister's child suffer so long and so much at his wife's hands if he'd known there was someone else who would be more likely to take better care of her.  I'd be very surprised if he even knows who JS's father is after tomorrow's episode either. It's likely he goes to see SH purely and simply to tell him about an injustice done to his niece. And not because he's any inkling that SH is JS's father, but simply because he hopes that the man who was brought up alongside him will heed his pleas on behalf of an orphan who's been evilly treated by the company where SH is CEO.

  18. The uncle got enough sobering-up soup down the gullet of JS's friend to get the story of what happened from her while JS was dealing with JH. We see no more of what happened at the house after thatin today's episode, because we follow JH downtown to meet MK waiting by JS's normal sales spot.

    So the uncle witll be coming to the company tomorrow to find Soo Ho (not because he knows SH is JS's father, but because he's a big shot in the company that fired JS whom he knows from his childhood.)  What, if anything, that will do for JS isn't clear (we see that she doesn't get her job back, but somehow or other she seems to get a sales assistant job in store that's upmarket enough to be patronized by DY, suggesting someone put a word in for her, though she may not know that). But it's plain that it reveals to SH that he has a daughter and that his daughter's mother died in poverty and isolation after he abandoned her for richer pickings. Whether or not he'll tell anyone else, including JS's uncle, about that is a different matter.  His graveside (or cliff-top) manner seems to involve apologetically addressing the departed and saying, in effect  "Sorry I'm going to do some dirty deals you wouldn't approve of, but hey, you're dead, and I'm not..."

    I don't think JS will go looking for justice over the dismissal. She's not one to ever look back. Indeed, she didn't raise any sort of protest in the first place, aside from privately challenging the perpetrator. It was MK, tipped of by the witnessing co-worker  who pressed on with the matter without consulting JS about her wishes, forced a confession from Yoo Ara then pushed for the inquiry, believing it would vindicate JS and at the same time bring her designing talent to the attention of top management.

    But something just struck me. In the teaser for this week's episodes, we saw snatches of a scene in KH's office where JS was desperately pleading with KH to "help her".  But in what appears, from the costumes and the setting, to be the corresponding scene in the actual episode, the encounter was played very differently. Far from throwing herself on KH's mercy, JS tells her outright that she now sees that she's had it in for her from the very start, though she can't for the life of her think why. It could be that a certain amount of un-doormatting of JS's character has taken place in the script conferences, which I think we all agree was somewhat overdue.

  19. Actually, it's even more devious than has so far been explained.

    Yoo Ara, confronted privately by Min Ki, admits to him that the design wasn't hers and stands to be dismissed from the company as a result, although JS, once satisfied that Ara has admitted her guilt to Min Ki and won't do it again, begs JH to use his influence to stop Ara being fired. (The fact that the girl she went out of her way to save responded by stabbing her in the back is why JS gives her that parting look: maybe that will start to teach JS about the folly of thinking everyone is as nice as she is.)

    However, the matter is too serious to be passed over that way, and a formal inquiry has to be held. But when asked in the meeting whether she stole JS's design, Ara unexpectedly holds to her original story that JS must have stolen the design, but admits that she in turn passed off as her own a design for one of next season's Red Milan products which was passed to her by a contact in the New York office. At which, KH hands out copies of the fax that has just arrived from Red Milan confirming that the design originated with them, though of course that's not true since we heard KH arranging with her crony at Red Milan to concoct the fax.

    So the inquiry apparently brings two quite separate copying offenses to light, albeit both concerning the same design.  The finding is that Yoo Ara passed off one of Red Milan's designs as her own, and JS then allegedly, not realizing that the design was supposedly already stolen, copied it from Yoo Ara and tried to claim the credit for it and get Yoo Ara dismissed in the hope of taking her place in the team.

    The end effect is that Yoo Ara stays on under a confidential disciplinary warning, and JS has to go, despite the attempts of JH to appeal to his grandfather on JS's behalf (his grandfather furiously dismisses his arguments, implying that his grandson's obvious soft spot for JS is still further evidence that his judgement can't be trusted where women are concerned) and despite also MK's appeal to Choi Soo Ho, saying that, whatever the origins of the design Yoo Ara submitted, he is absolutely certain that the design in JS's notebook was all her own work. Soo Ho concedes that MK may be right, but argues that JS's fate is secondary to preserving the reputation of the company (and as usual in Kdramas, he backs that up by saying that this isn't about profits for the owners, it's about ensuring the livelihoods of thousands of employees). So JS will be dismissed for attempting company-internal plagiarism of a Shinwha designer's work (a matter that, if it arouses any public interest at all, will merely show the high standards of integrity Shinwha enforces) but what Yoo Ara did will be passed over in silence, since bringing that to light would cast a serious slur on the company's behaviour via a vis other companies  (and KH undertakes to use her standing with Red Milan to get them to relinquish any claims to the design, since Shinwha is already committed within industry circules to making it their lead design of the season. Since it was never Red Milan's design in the first place, and since no-one at Red Milan even knows about the design or the fax apart from the crony who agreed to send it, it's very easy for KH to deliver on that apparently major promise, while at the same time ostensibly performing yet another "service" for Shinwha for which grandfather will be grateful.

    The three co-workers who talk about what's happened after JS has departed with the manager to finalize her dismissal at the HR office while Ara keeps uncomfortably silent are saying that they don't believe she would steal a design from another team member, and they can't see how she, with no insider contacts to the other big industry players, could have any access to Red Milan's next season's designs, so she can't really have stolen it independently from there, either The older female is in the course of saying that since the finest designers succeed precisely because of their sensitive antennae for forthcoming trends, it's not inconceivable that two such designers can arrive independently at very similar designs, but she's cut short by the returning manager who declares that the whole topic is now closed and mustn't be raised again.

    Though apparently leading to nothing in the Luna team, that line of defense is exactly the one we see JH arriving at himself. He, too, is as unable to believe in JS's guilt as he is to contest the apparently incontrovertible evidence that the design really does belong to Red Milan. But he recalls how, years ago, JS dumbfounded him by proving that,  thanks to the sort of fashion antennae her erstwhile co-worker talks about, she had indeed come up totally independently with the same design as one just about to be released by a major fashion house, and he gives her the photo she once pasted to the display window and which he has kept ever since, as a sign of how, and why, he believes in her innocence.

    He says there's "something else" he's come to give her, too, but as he reaches into his pocket for the phone she gave back to him, another text from MK comes in and he decides not to hand the phone over to her just yet or to let on  that it was indeed the phone he was planning to give her back. "Your folks are waiting for you, so go inside now. I'll give it you next time."  And he goes to deal first with the sender of that text...

  20. The text preview for today went a bit too far when it said that JS Aunt became DY's housekeeper. Looks like that's going to happen tomorrow, but she hasn't got that job as of today.

    What happened was that Evil Aunt came on a buttering-up visit do DY's Seoul house and DY apologized to her for not being able to offer her much in the way of hospitality since her trusty housekeeper from the beach villa hadn't wanted to leave her family to come and work for them in Seoul and she was currently trying without much success to find a suitable replacement.

    At that point Evil Aunt has one of her instant nasty brainwaves, and she suggests herself for the job, pointing out that she knows all about how to look after her supposed niece in a way no stranger could. DY is taken aback by the proposal, and answers very non-committally.

    Later that evening, she tells her husband, who is just as doubtful as she is about the idea. (We should perhaps remember that DY has no memories of what Evil Aunt was like when they met, and massively disliked, each other, in JS's childhood days. But her husband of course has such memories, and he remarked on the apparent huge change in the Aunt's character when they met again and found it hard to credit.) They decide, however, to put the matter to KH. If it's really what she would like, then they'll agree.

    But so far, DY hasn't told KH about this possibility. She was on the verge of broaching it today after KH pulled another clever stunt by recalling what JS once told her about "her Ajumma's" marvellous pasta when DY serves up pasta as the first meal she's cooked for her in the Seoul house. KH seizes on the opportunity to "remember" her first taste of DY's spaghetti,  even though DY has lost all recollection of it. But DY catches herself at the last moment and postpones asking the question about the housekeeper appointment.

    I wouldn't be surprised to find tomorrow that Evil Aunt tips KH off and ask her to suggest herself to DY that her "aunt" would make a perfect housekeeper. Even though KH hates the sight of her parents, she's badly in need of a gatekeeper to make sure JS doesn't get inside the house, as well as an on-the-spot ally and potential spy from whom she has nothing to hide.
